the correct "Ask the Hosts" topic...

The last few ttimes I have logged in, my Emotorcons were turned off...I finally figured out where to go to turn them on, but this has happened, I'd say, 2 or 3 times in the last month...are we having software problems, or am I the idiot doing something wrong...(hey, Bob, your village called, and they are missing their idiot...please come home ASAP so the Village Idiot position can be filled once again by.......well.......an idiot!).......

You aren't doing anything wrong at all. When you use the "Catch Up" button in your Message Center that unintentionally turns your emotorcons off. I thought they were going to fix that.

The best place for this conversation is probably the Forums Software discussion - that's where we've been talking about it.

I am a little new to this and could use some help.I have done some research on importing a car from the u.s but some of my questions are still not answered and could really use the feedback of people who have knowledge of gone through the process themselves.

I am looking to import a 68 Dodge Charger from the U.S. and would like to know if the kind of costs involved besides the actual purchase of the vehicle.

Will i have to pay their State Tax?

Because the car is fairly old will i have to pay Duty and GST & PST?Even if i plan to resell the vehicle?

Because the car is going to be resold will it need to registered in my province?

What kind of documentation is required for importing older vehicles?

Are their transport companies that will take care of the border stuff?

Are their any other kind of hidden costs or paper work that i should be aware of?

i am flexible on what kind of car (prefer SUV though), but looking for the best 24 or less lease with little to no down that is subsidized by the automaker, i am at the end of my 24 mo/$279 mo Honda Odyssey lease and want a similar deal!! Know of any that are less than $300 a month for 2 years or less?

Hi imariquinn. Unfortunately, Honda is not offering any sort of lease support on the Odyssey now like it was when you leased yours for such a great payment two years ago. You will have to spend a lot more than you are paying now to get a new one. You seem to be interested in vehicles that have a lot of space. A few that have a decent amount of room inside and have decent lease programs available on them right now include the Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Caravan / Grand Caravan, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tuscon, Jeep Liberty, Toyota Sienna, and Honda Pilot. The last two are the best vehicles of the bunch, but are at the high end of the price range that you mentioned. Stop by the following forum and visit a few of the specific lease discussions for a few of these models to find out more information on exactly how much it would cost to lease one right now: Prices Paid: Buying & Leasing Experiences.

Here's my dilemma: My lease on a 2003 Accord Ex V6 Sedan will be up at the end of April. My wife and I would like to purchase a CR-V and keep it for 6-8 years. The problem is, well, the 2007s will be coming out in the Fall and its hard for us to anticiapte if we are going to want that one without seeing how much more interior space and engine performance will be part of the redesign. We know that the Gen 2 CR-V will work fine with our 2 toddlers but I guess you can always use a little more room in the cargo area and power in the engine bay.
So what would you do?

1) Buy the Accord at the end of the lease in April and then sell it in the fall to get a 2007 CR-V?

2) Turn the Accord in at lease end in April and buy a 2006 CR-V EX (at hopefully great cost reduction with possible factory finance support).

3) Buy a Certified Pre Owned CR-V for the same amount that the Accord would have cost at buyout and possibly get a 2007 CR-V in the Fall or just keep the CPO?

4) Or rent a car for 6 months till the 2007s come out and buy it if we like it or buy a 2006 cause its really discounted!

I'm leaning towards 2 or 3 but need your advice.

This is the first time for me to shop for a car. I would appreciate your recommendation. I am looking at Infiniti G35 and Volvo S60. If the price is very similar after tax and taking financing into consideration, which one would you choose. A service guy told me S60 is better than G35. But S60 looks better for young people. I am not old.

Which one will you buy? Thanks.

Hi capri33. I personally would go with the Infiniti G35 over the Volvo S60, but they are nice and fairly pretty different. You really need to test drive both of them to get a feel for which one you like better. You should be able to find out additional information on both of these cars over in the Sedans Forum. Edmunds.com has a number of discussions on both of these cars individually as well as come comparison discussions there.

Here's a general question that I couldn't find a good forum for: It's March 2006. How much less should I pay a dealer for a never-sold 2005 than for a 2006 with all the same options.

Specifically I'm looking at a 2005 Altima, around $23K, but I figure the question applies to any car where the 2005 is essentially the same as the 2006 (but the 2007 will be a redesign). What should the discount be? 5%, 10%, more?

Hi gwellman. Surprisingly, there is not any difference between the customer cash that Nissan is currently providing on the 2006 Altima and the 2005 Altima. Both models currently have $1,500 on them. Given the fact that the Altima is basically a model that dealers usually blow out without a whole lot of gross to begin with, I suspect that the difference in price between an '06 and an '05 Altima would not be enough to justify purchasing the leftover model. I'm not sure how much of a difference I would personally need to buy the '05 model over the '06, but it would probably be at least $1,000. I was wondering if anyone has any experience buying cars through the AAA automotive service. So far they are very good to work with, and will get me a good solid vehicle. But do they offer their lowest price, or should I haggle with them? I'm looking for a 2003 Honda CRV EX, which are in pretty high demand, and the prices don't seem to fluxuate much. But I want to make sure that I'm getting his lowest price.
Thanks for any input on dealing with AAA.

Whoops! One more question about financing. I have secured an automobile loan at a fixed rate of 6.11%, but I also have the option of doing a home equity loan for around 8% fixed. I know I can write off the home equity loan, but is it worth the higher interest rate? I'll be borrowing approximately $14,000
From the web research I've done, the auto loan is recommended, but I wanted to see what you all thought.

So today someone stole my hubcap while I was parked at the grocery store for 15 minutes. I parked right on the side instead of in the front..that probably wasn't a great idea. :mad:

By any chance would this be covered under insurance or warranty? I don't know who to call and ask without sounding like an idiot..

Not warranty - that's for defects in manufacture.

You might post in our topic called Questions About Auto Insurance & Accidents - I know it's not an accident, but members who are familiar with insurance coverage hang out there. You will probably find that replacing the hubcap yourself is the best option. It is likely that your deductible is way higher than the cost of a hubcap.

And we don't treat anyone like an idiot here! We exist to help people to get answers on stuff they don't know a lot about. No one can be an expert on everything.

Don't even think of claiming it on your insurance...that kind of little crap will cause them to skyrocket your premiums, and for what...a hubcap worth $100-200???
...excuse me, a hubcap that SELLS for $100-200 but is probably worth $25???

Buy another one and just don't get your mother-in-law a Xmas gift...

Don't concern yourself with who the fleet manager is. If you're looking for the best new car price, tell them you will buy it for invoice. Most places will sell a car for this. All of this crap this site puts out telling people to do this and that to avoid scams is ridiculous. Quit wasting your time on this site and go offer to buy your "dream car" at invoice. If that dealer won't do it, the next one will.

Hi,
I was wondering which forum I could post the following question to.
I recently purchased a toyota corolla and the salesman told me there was a dealer fee and added the fee to the accessory price. I didn't know that this was a scam. Is there any way to get the money back on this sales scam? I didn't purchase any accessories with the car. Anyone else been scammed by non-existent dealer fees?

Hi kariroma. Most dealers charge some sort of doc fee on new vehicle purchases. It sounds like this might be what you are talking about. The size of this fee varies from dealer to dealer. Some states regulate charges like this, but many do not. While doc fees aren't much more than a way for dealers to add additional profit to deals, I wouldn't exactly call them a scam per se. Unfortunately, now that you have agreed to the price of your new car and have physically taken delivery of it, you really cannot get your money back. As long as you are happy with the total price that you paid for your car, it really doesn't matter how that price breaks down. If you feel that you paid too much, use this as a learning experience to negotiate a better deal next time.
