I am new to this forum but I came across some posts from a couple of months ago. I am currently negotiating on a 2004 Malibu LT Demo car(4,500 miles). I know Car_man is not a big fan of demos but as it stands I was offered Invoice less the GM rebates plus and additional $1,500 off. I am also expecting an extended warranty at least to 48,000 miles(from 36,000). Does this seem like a decent deal? Also, I qualify for an employee discount but have heard that this is may not be applicable to a demo vehicle. Is this true? I would appreciate any feedback as soon as possible. Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving.
I bought an 04 demo monte carlo ss with 5000 miles. dealer gave me invoice less almost 2,000 (1858 EXACTLY) 3500 in rebates, 3.9 % on a 72 month loan but no additional warranty. Try & get them to give you a 48/48 as far as the warranty as I lost 10 months on the warranty plus the mileage.I also hear waiting till the end of the month my bring more $$ as the dealer does not want to have to make another payment on the demonsrator. Despite all the bs I dealt with I do love my car. I would by the Malibu Demo with the deal the are giving you plus the extra 48,000.
GMAC bonus cash is set to expire today. I'm looking at a new 2004 vehicle purchase today. Is there any to find out what the GMAC Bonus cash will change to tomorrow? I'm in the Western region.
I suspect that it will go up, but I would really like to know for sure.
Hi Mark. It is difficult to predict what manufacturers will do with their future incentives programs with 100% accuracy. I doubt that GM's own dealers even know exactly what its new December incentives program will be like yet. I personally do not think that you have much to lose by waiting because vehicles' incentives generally increase as the model year progresses, but again one never knows what a future incentives program will be like for certain. If you check back with me tomorrow I can tell you what GM's December incentives are like for the model that you are interested in.
Thanks for the info. Looks like I have to roll the dice. I will check back tomorrow. Most of the current incentives are valid until 1/3/05. It appears that only the GMAC Bonus cash is set to expire today.
Well I was in the same boat as Markf57 and decided to wait to see what the month of December had in store as far as rebates and guess what.....They're worse now. GM did away with the bonus cash for Chevrolet Tahoes and the 0.0% financing for 72 months.
I thought it would have gotten better not worse.. Why would this be?
You're welcome, Mark. I probably would have done the exact same thing if I was in your situation. While it is true that the only incentive that General Motors is offering that was scheduled to expire on November 30th was the bonus cash, it would not surprise me in the least if GM revised its entire program. It has made major unscheduled changes to its programs at the beginning of a new month in the past. The word on the street is that November was a pretty bad sales month for the auto industry, particularly GM. I suspect that they are going to want to have a strong December to finish up the year on a high note. Enhancing its incentives would help them accomplish this. Furthermore, the Chevrolet brand is within striking distance to pass the Ford division as the number one selling brand in the U.S. We may see GM try to pass Ford to claim this bragging right. I don't think the sales title means much to anyone outside of Detroit, especially if GM has to enhance its already high incentives even further to achieve it, but I definitely can see it enhancing its program to try to pass Ford. Post a quick reminder in this discussion later on today and I will let you know what I have been able to find out about GM's December incentives. Talk to you soon.
Hello cali_dvr. It is a little early to tell if the full details of General Motors' December incentives program is available yet. While there certainly is no guarantee that it will continue the bonus cash that was scheduled to expire on November 30th into December, I would be surprised if it did not make some sort of enhancement to its incentives this month. Take a look at my previous post for my explanation why I expect GM to up its incentives in December. There is a good chance that the bonus cash disappeared from General Motors' web sites when it was scheduled to expire and any new programs have not been added yet. It often takes automakers a little while to update the incentives information on their sites. Please feel free to check back with me later on today and I will be more than happy to tell you what I have been able to find out about GM's latest incentives on the model or models that you are considering.
I called my salesman yesterday and told him that I was going to put off the purchase till 12/1 and take my chances with the newer incentives. He called me back about 15 minutes later saying that they really want the sale this month. He was willing to sign a form stating that if I close on 11/30 and the incentives get better on 12/1 that they would rewrite the deal. It that a common pratice?
As a side note, I did go into the dealership and he did have me sign that form. However, we couldn't agree on price. Here is what I wanted for a 2004 Pontiac Vibe AWD (MSRP 23255). Invoice (22124.68) less holdback ($680), less the $570 regional advertising fees that are put in invoice. Less incentives. So I walked.
I too am hoping for better deals in December, but if not, I'll keep waiting, something better always comes along and its not like I'm desperate for a vehicle. The salesman has been calling and pressuring me to get the deals before November 30th.
My credit union has a program that offers access to dealerships who will sell for only $200-$500 over dealer invoice with no hassles. My question is, do you think people do a lot better than this credit union offer? I'm not very good at negotiation. Is it common to get a better deal than $200.00 over invoice? I know it shouldn't effect any of the rebates that are offered, but what about the bonus cash and other deals?

Last night we went to get the Pathfinder lease special and as you may guess the issue of contention was the trade. We have an '02 BMW 325Ci with 30k miles loaded 5-speed. Payoff is 25.7k and wholesale book is 24k. The dealer would only offer 20k. I did not want to roll the 5.7k negative into the deal and be in the same boat down the road so we walked. A friend at a BMW store only offered me 21k for it. I've drastically reduced the price in the paper and online to 24k but am not very confident this will work since we've had little interest to this point and the selling price has been the cheapest in So. Cal.
Any other suggestions on how to get rid of our trade with taking as little beating as possible? Consignment? Shop other dealers? See if another BMW store will take it off our hands without buying a car from them?

Not knowing all the details, but it sounds like the first dealer was about on the money, and your friend was doing you a favor .. what holds this one back is the handshaker, and being a coupe doesn't help it ...
There is just *oodles* of Bimmers coming off lease right now, so your competition is very strong, so you might be thinkin' in the $23ish range ... have you thought about a bigger Ad, maybe running multiple Ad's in San Diego and San Fran.? maybe ebay.? maybe all 3 ... the internet is great, but most folks still like to do it the old fashion way - paper ad's ........................

Hi sickntired1. $200 to $500 over dealer invoice is a reasonable deal on most domestic products if you have any available customer and dealer cash incentives deducted from the price of the vehicle that you are getting.

If they did, dealers would be writing new contracts every other day and their cash flow would come to a grinding halt and they would be out of business, because they would have to rewrite the contracts for the buyer from 2 weeks ago, then 3 weeks ago, then 2 months ago, etc etc etc.com .. well , you get the idea .... besides, it's a factory to customer thing, it has nothing to do with the dealer ...........
You're very welcome, benny5. Generally speaking, consumers usually can get the most money for their used vehicle by selling it on their own. Of course, there is a price in terms of convenience that is associated with selling one's vehicle privately. Furthermore, the more expensive a vehicle is, the longer it often takes to sell privately because many of the consumers who are willing to spend big bucks on used vehicles prefer to do so through dealers. So you may be able to reduce the amount of money that you are upside down on your car by selling it on your own, but I still don't think that you will be able to get enough for it to pay off your loan in full. One of the main problems with your car is that it has a manual transmission. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of manual trannies and I personally would have gotten your car with one as well. However, these days there is a limited number of people who know how to drive a stick so you are eliminating a lot of potential customers because your car has one.
Another place that you may want to try is Carmax. Many community members have had favorable experiences selling their vehicles to Carmax. If there is one in your area, it won't take long to drive your car by there and see what they will give you for it.

Hi andre1. I have had an opportunity to take a look at DaimlerChrysler's December incentives program. It was one of the few manufacturers to have a strong November, sales-wise. As a result, it backed off on its support on some models this month. This month DCX is offering 0% financing for up to 3 years, 2.9% for 4 years, and 3.9% for 5 years or $2,000 customer cash on the 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. It also has a $1,000 bonus on '05 Pacifica models that are financed or leased through Chrysler Financial.
The only incentive that is currently being offered on the 2005 Dodge Magnum and 2005 Chrysler 300C is $1,000 for models that are financed or leased through Chrysler Financial.
Of course, all of the above models have lease support on them as well.

Let's see what sort of incentives General Motors is providing on the car that you are interested in right now, maggie2. In December in its Northeast region, General Motors is providing 0% financing for up to 3 years, 2.9% for 4 years, and 3.9% for 5 years or $1,000 customer cash on the 2005 Pontiac G6. While I am not personally a very big General Motors fan, the new Pontiac G6 actually looks like a pretty nice car. I haven't driven one yet, but the exterior and interior look nice, especially the interesting sunroof.
Markf57, I am not aware of any place on line that provides consumers with a history of what sort of incentives manufacturers have offered on their products in the past. Having said this, I have been in the industry for quite a while and have a fairly good memory for such things so I might be able to help you out. What sort of information are you looking for and why?

The fact that there is dealer cash available on the model that you are interested in definitely helps your bargaining position, especially if the salesperson that you are working with volunteered this information. Essentially the fact that there is $2,000 dealer cash on this truck in your area right now means that the dealership that you are working with could sell it to you for invoice and still make $2,000. I personally am not all that familiar with what the market is like for this truck in your neck of the woods, but I would think that taking this incentive into account you may be able to purchase an '04 Sequoia for $1,000 or so under invoice. I was looking to track it, sort of like a stock to see trends. However, after a 2nd thought, I'm not sure that it would be helpful. I also was trying to determine how incentives are timed. I was surprised based on the dismal GM sales for November that most of the GMAC bonus cash disappeared. I was interested to see how long it took to add an incentive back. Earlier I told you that I was going to roll the dice and it looks like I lost. If GM doesn't add anything in the next couple of days, I don't see how effective it could be for the rest of December with the holidays fast approaching.

I currently own a 2004 grand prix, and I need a car that gives me less monthly payments and less gasoline consumption
I looked at the Vibe and with the rebates it seems like a very good offer, although I don't understand the details of the rebates I think I qualify for a few of them. However when I asked the local dealer for price he quoted me at 27k for a vibe GT, how is that possible? I know cars are more expensive in Puerto rico because of the 6.6% tax that applies to them, but 7k more? Do you know why is it this expensive? and if possible can you give me more information on the rebates?
I was actually at an Auto Nation/Power store last weekend. I was going for a lease special so I figured they would try and rip (AKA steal) my trade. Further, I have been to their stores in the past and their finance departments don't have the best reputations.
They did exactly how I predicted. One thing to watch out for on a trade is if they book your trade wrong. What I mean is that on the print out of your trade that gives them the wholesale trade value they will not add all of the equipment the vehicle has. They will then show you the print out to try and convince you the trade is not worth as much as you think it is. They did this to me and I caught it. The value was about $1500 less than it should since they left out leather, heated seats and harman kardon sound. I called a friend at another dealership who gave me the right book.
Hi Car_Man, thank you for you advice to offer $1000 under invoice on the Sequoia. I did this but then the dealer told me that his invoice cost (which I actually have a print-out of) was $1200 over Edmund's price. So anyway, I either got the truck for $300 under Edmunds invoice or $1500 under the dealer invoice according to whichever is right. Is there a reason for the discrepancy in the Edmunds invoice and the invoice listed on the dealer's Vehicle Locator print-out sheet? I am still happy that I got the SUV I wanted for under invoice but just wondering how well I did! Thanks again!
Just to confirm...the $4000 rebate on the '05 Malibu Maxx does apply to the North Central region. I'm asking because it's not listed in Edmunds rebate section(as well as several other web sites), but perhaps they haven't been updated yet.
Anyone know what Dec BMW incentives look like on the 2004 X3's? The 1.9% APR and lease deal (.0007 on 3.0l and .0009 MF on 2.5l) expired at end of Nov, but nothing is posted yet and the dealers are still stuck with piles of the 2004's.
Markf57, certain trends do exist when looking at manufacturers' spending on incentives over the past several years. One notable one is that spending on incentives tends to decrease at the beginning of a new model year because automakers' offers on new models are not as generous as they are on leftover models. Other than the fact that spending is lower on new models than it is on older models I personally feel as though it is difficult to learn much about incentives by looking at them historically because the light vehicle market is dynamic and changes based upon a large number of factors including the economy, interest rates, etc...
As far as General Motors' new incentives go, its GMAC bonus cash did not disappear. It is still available on a number of models in December, it may have changed the vehicles that this cash is available on a little bit though.
Greetings senencito. You live in Puerto Rico, huh? As I sit here in near freezing temperatures (outside I do have heat in my home ) I am jealous of the wonderful weather that you must be enjoying. There is a price associated with living in paradise though. Even though I do not believe that General Motors' pricing is any different in Puerto Rico as it is in the continental U.S., in area where there is not much competition, like Hawaii, many dealers charge an arm and a leg for vehicles because they know that consumers have to pay their price or not get the vehicle that they want. This may be the case in Puerto Rico as well. If there are any other Pontiac dealers in your area, you may want to comparison shop to see if you can get this car for less than the outrageous $27,000 that you were quoted for this one.
I don't get questions on what incentives are available in Puerto Rico very often, but I believe that GM's incentives in your area are very similar to its offers in its Western region other than the fact that there is not any bonus cash that I am aware of available in Puerto Rico. If this is the case as I suspect, in your area GM is offering 0% financing for up to 5 years and 1.9% for 6 years or $2,000 customer cash on the 2005 Pontiac Vibe.

Thanks for the great info on my prospective Jeep purchase.
Last night we went to get the Pathfinder lease special and as you may guess the issue of contention was the trade. We have an '02 BMW 325Ci with 30k miles loaded 5-speed. Payoff is 25.7k and wholesale book is 24k. The dealer would only offer 20k. I did not want to roll the 5.7k negative into the deal and be in the same boat down the road so we walked. A friend at a BMW store only offered me 21k for it. I've drastically reduced the price in the paper and online to 24k but am not very confident this will work since we've had little interest to this point and the selling price has been the cheapest in So. Cal.
Any other suggestions on how to get rid of our trade with taking as little beating as possible? Consignment? Shop other dealers? See if another BMW store will take it off our hands without buying a car from them?

Not knowing all the details, but it sounds like the first dealer was about on the money, and your friend was doing you a favor .. what holds this one back is the handshaker, and being a coupe doesn't help it ...
There is just *oodles* of Bimmers coming off lease right now, so your competition is very strong, so you might be thinkin' in the $23ish range ... have you thought about a bigger Ad, maybe running multiple Ad's in San Diego and San Fran.? maybe ebay.? maybe all 3 ... the internet is great, but most folks still like to do it the old fashion way - paper ad's ........................

If they did, dealers would be writing new contracts every other day and their cash flow would come to a grinding halt and they would be out of business, because they would have to rewrite the contracts for the buyer from 2 weeks ago, then 3 weeks ago, then 2 months ago, etc etc etc.com .. well , you get the idea .... besides, it's a factory to customer thing, it has nothing to do with the dealer ...........

Another place that you may want to try is Carmax. Many community members have had favorable experiences selling their vehicles to Carmax. If there is one in your area, it won't take long to drive your car by there and see what they will give you for it.

The only incentive that is currently being offered on the 2005 Dodge Magnum and 2005 Chrysler 300C is $1,000 for models that are financed or leased through Chrysler Financial.
Of course, all of the above models have lease support on them as well.

I was looking to track it, sort of like a stock to see trends. However, after a 2nd thought, I'm not sure that it would be helpful. I also was trying to determine how incentives are timed. I was surprised based on the dismal GM sales for November that most of the GMAC bonus cash disappeared. I was interested to see how long it took to add an incentive back. Earlier I told you that I was going to roll the dice and it looks like I lost. If GM doesn't add anything in the next couple of days, I don't see how effective it could be for the rest of December with the holidays fast approaching.

I looked at the Vibe and with the rebates it seems like a very good offer, although I don't understand the details of the rebates I think I qualify for a few of them. However when I asked the local dealer for price he quoted me at 27k for a vibe GT, how is that possible? I know cars are more expensive in Puerto rico because of the 6.6% tax that applies to them, but 7k more? Do you know why is it this expensive? and if possible can you give me more information on the rebates?

I was actually at an Auto Nation/Power store last weekend. I was going for a lease special so I figured they would try and rip (AKA steal) my trade. Further, I have been to their stores in the past and their finance departments don't have the best reputations.
They did exactly how I predicted. One thing to watch out for on a trade is if they book your trade wrong. What I mean is that on the print out of your trade that gives them the wholesale trade value they will not add all of the equipment the vehicle has. They will then show you the print out to try and convince you the trade is not worth as much as you think it is. They did this to me and I caught it. The value was about $1500 less than it should since they left out leather, heated seats and harman kardon sound. I called a friend at another dealership who gave me the right book.
Just to confirm...the $4000 rebate on the '05 Malibu Maxx does apply to the North Central region. I'm asking because it's not listed in Edmunds rebate section(as well as several other web sites), but perhaps they haven't been updated yet.

As far as General Motors' new incentives go, its GMAC bonus cash did not disappear. It is still available on a number of models in December, it may have changed the vehicles that this cash is available on a little bit though.

I don't get questions on what incentives are available in Puerto Rico very often, but I believe that GM's incentives in your area are very similar to its offers in its Western region other than the fact that there is not any bonus cash that I am aware of available in Puerto Rico. If this is the case as I suspect, in your area GM is offering 0% financing for up to 5 years and 1.9% for 6 years or $2,000 customer cash on the 2005 Pontiac Vibe.
