Anyone know when the 2003 Passats will be hitting the showrooms? A dealer Jax, Fla. said they might be in by July? Is there anywhere to go on the web to view it? If I were close to buying, should I wait for the 2003 or get a 2002? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I've never owned a German made car, so I'm confessing my ignorance here. Interested in people's thoughts of the Audi A4 vs. Passat GLX automatic. Which would be the better value, better dependability, more fun, etc.? Also, is the 1.8 a better deal than the 3.0 in the A4? Thanks!

I recently purchased an automatic 2002 GLS 1.8 4 cylinder Passat w/ Monsoon and mudflaps (explained to me as an added feature) for almost 800 dollars over its TMV (it was 22.2k and I paid 22.9). Here's the catch, the car had become demo one week before (about 700 miles on it) I didn't walk during negotiations because I needed to get a car NOW and the car was exactly what I had been looking for for over a month (color, automatic, etc.). In New Orleans, believe it or not, there is a very limited selection. I really wanted to pay closer to 22k. Also, the dealership tried to tack on some BS fee of $500 that was intially explained to me as mandatory...at least I saw through that ploy. Did my time constraint to find my Passat make me bite the bullet

The invoice was 21.8 and MRSP 23.8. At the time, my research had all of these values 500 more (so of course I thought my price was acceptable) I have a feeling I should have stuck to my guns and demanded the 22k price, whether it meant walking or not. I

Yup, you should have. ALWAYS walk if you don't get your price. Invoice plus 200-300 at the most. Maybe just flat invoice for a 2002 this late in the year. I bought a GLX in Michigan (all non-american cars are rare in Michigan) 6 weeks ago for invoice plus $300. It was actually invoice plus $100 but they had to get the car from a different dealer out of state. So I had to pay $200 for flatbed transport. That said, if you like the car, and it really was
exactly what you wanted, then why worry about a few hundred bucks over the life of a car?? Just enjoy it.

be quite candid...I don't really see any benefit in berating yourself about this transaction,
particularly using such a subjective measuring stick.

You got the exact car that you were looking for,
"for over a month", and you got it when you needed
    it, "NOW"....

    Just a reminder...My friends here at edmunds.com

Let me guess?? You went to Walker VW in Metairie?? They are such a rip off. I bought a 2002 Jetta in April. I went there and do you know they would not budge on the price at all. They wanted Full MSRP for a Jetta GLS 1.8T 5-speed. They claim that the car was hard to come by in 5speed. Then that $500 whatever fee?? Unbelievable!! I really wanted the car and considered getting it but... I walked!!

I went to Baton Rouge to the VW dealer up there. I told them what kinda car I wanted and that I wasn't gonna play games. They located the car I wanted in Dallas. EXACT colors and options!! I got it for $600 above invoice. I did however have to pay $300 for shipping (they flat bedded it to Baton Rouge). I still save a lot more money. That $500 fee that walker charges made me walk. However, I think they are trying to pay for their new facilites. They just built the new VW showroom and now they are building a new Acura show room!! Anyway, Congrats on your new car and good luck!

I,ve been quoted a price of $28192on a 2002 glx sedan I asked about the base cost price of $25539 and was told the diff was for auto transmission! Also the $500 coupon good until 7/1 was not discussed How does that price sound?? located in central Florida but will "travel" if its worth the effort
Any info about when the 2003,s will be available?
    Thank u in advance

Bowink: I think you could do better. I decided on an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro, but I talked to some great VW dealers. One was Mike Henson at Ash Tisdelle in Jax, Fla. He's the internet manager. Another was Norman at Low Country VW in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Finally, Rocky Mallard was helpful at Vaden VW in Savannah. The best was Mike Henson. Hope it helps!

Invoice on a 2002 GLX Tip Sedan is $27854.00 which
    includes Port Prep & FPIR...MSRP is $30,375.00
    including Destination.

We do not make a Passat with a *Base Price* of
    $25,539.00

Customer Loyalty $500 is not a Dealer Incentive...If
you do not currently own a VW; you do not qualify.
If you do; bring your current Registration to the
Dealership and have them make a copy and Fax it to Program Headquarters...

Bowink, did you say you got the 2003!?! I didn't know that they were out already. If you don't mind me saying, how much did it cost. Do you live in the Jax, Fla. area? Enjoy your new car! What color did you get? Did the 2003 have any different features or options on it? I look forward to your response.

I am writing from Pulliam Wray VW in SC. We just received 8 2003 models today in the Passat. Both manuals and automatics. They have been long awaited. Especially the Passat Wagon.

I've asked my salesman about this and he is somewhat noncommittal. I don't have the coupon but traded in my Jetta for a Passat Variant. This was at the last few days of May and I took delivery 6/6. I just got my first installment bill from VW. Is this a lost cause or can the rebate be applied to any payment? Also, will VWOA listen to any complaints about this if the Salesman/manager/owner just blows me off since they now have my money?

thx, I read Vortex also and appreciate your candor and comments.

I just purchased a 2003 GLS Wagon equipped just the way I wanted (1.8T, manual, leather, sunroof). It was the first one to the dealer here in Phoenix. They have changed the equipment level - the 2003s now include the alloy wheels, the sunroof and the sound system in the base price which went from $22250 to $23685. Drove up to Prescot and back yesterday evening. What a great automobile. It just wants to run so I am anxious to get carefully through the first 600 miles. The book says to stay below 3/4 of the top speed on the speedometer for this period which seems a bit wild to me. The speedo shows 160mph so 120 seems a bit fast for break in.

Does anyone make a rubber/plastic tray for the cargo area? I have seen ones for the sedan but haven't seen one for the wagon.

'02 GLS wagons are pretty scarce in my area at this point; given the low supply, what would be a fair offer over invoice? Thanks!

BoWink: That's awesome. I changed my mind about the Audi A4 and Lexus Es300 and bought the Passat GLX 2003 from Mike Henson on Saturday. She's Silverstone Grey ext, grey int.. Mike (@ ASH TISDELL in Jacsonville, FLa.)was very professional and delivered the car to me in Savannah at no extra charge! The car fully equipped was about 6 grand lower than the other 2. Dr.Who5, not sure where you live, but Mike was awesome to work with. You'll also find VW Guild an invaluable resource in this forum as well. Nobody, and I mean nobody, knows the VW line like him. Bowink, happy motoring. I look forward to seeing how you like the car months from now! Mike Henson's# is 904-269-7685.

The car I'm interested in is..
    Passat wagon GLS 1.8T
    options:
    Leather Package
    Auto Trans
    Monsoon stereo

Looks like the luxury package option is now standard , and is rolled into the base MSRP, which went from 22,550 to 23,685. The option MSRPs have remained the same so I'm assuming the invoice is the same. Problem is I don't know the base invoice before options. It was 20,513 but I don't know how much it went up now that the lux package is standard. I'd hate to go into the dealer without knowing the exact base invoice.

    Thanks!

I peeked at the Salesman's 2003 pricing sheet when I placed my order:

    2003 Invoice:

    GLS Wagon 5 Speed - 21538 + 575 destination
    Leather - 1325
    ESP - 247

Note that the GLS models this year include the luxury package (Sunroof, etc.) as standard.

I paid $492 over invoice, with no "Processing Fees" - $24,177 for an Indigo Blue 2003 GLS 5 Speed Wagon, with Leather & ESP. It's supposed to arrive September 20 (3 months after ordering).

Passat wagaon Invoice lists FPIR (which I think is floor plan inventory reduction. Is this money the dealer gets from the factory when he sells the car or is this a fee the buyer pays. My local dealer was trying to pass it on as a fee to me.

    Thanks
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
    Loved that show...

FloorPlan INTEREST Reserve is money TAKEN from
the Dealer. It is similar to an automatic payroll
    deduction to pay a bill.

You will note the operative word here is INTEREST,
and wherever we find that word; Principal is not
far away..."a capital sum paid at interest."

This $92.00 per car pays down a small amount of the Total Interest that is owed against the Principal/Flooring charges required to maintain
    a full & complete inventory...

It is a legitimate part of the Invoice...as is
    Port Prep/$25.00...

I just agreed on a price for a new 2003 passat GLS 1.8T/tiptronic wagon - $750 over invoice! I could not have done it without the info/help from the board. The bad news is the dealer does not have my color, so I may have to order (and wait) if he can't find one!

...relative to invoice on a 2003 1.8T silver w/black leather? I just e-mailed two VW dealers each about 200 miles away that have the car I want and I asked them to get back to me.

The local dealer is small, and said they would do $500 over invoice on an in stock car, but don't know when the car I want is coming in. I am going to lease, so I want to grab the good residual as early in the model year as possible.

    Thanks for the advice.

I've been reading that some folks are getting ESP stability control in an '03 GLS. As far as I know it's not available in '02. Only in the W-8. To me this is the most significant difference between the two model years. What did anybody pay for the option?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Your local dealer's price is quite fair, really. Why not ask them to locate what you want? It only costs a few dollars more a month if they charge $100 more for transporting the car home.
  • bkm119bkm119 Member Posts: 16
The local dealer said they would do what you suggested with an '02 Jetta. But with a baby on the way, I need a little bigger back seat.

They told me that they really don't have anything to give to get the car (e.g. they don't have any '03 Passats yet and don't know how soon they will get one.) I certainly think the local dealer's price is quite fair, but I just received the same offer from one of the other dealers, so I might have to take it.

    Thanks for the advice.

I am on my way to start the car purchasing process. I have all of my Edmunds print outs and I am anxious to see what happens.

I am looking for a Passat GLX 4Motion, I have three colors I am interested so I am hoping they have at least one.

My big concern is which year should I purchase? I feel like if I buy a 2002, I may get a better deal, but then I like to be on the cutting edge, so having a 2003 sounds kewl too.

So here goes, everyone wish me luck. I will write back my experience when I get back.

    Hello-

Quick question about the "Get it or regret it event." I can see from edmunds that there is special financing on remaining 2002's but if you don't opt for the special financing can the dealer get some kind of cash back?

According to Tulley VW in Nashua, NH this "event" ends 7/31.

    Thanks!
  • jpierce26jpierce26 Member Posts: 60
I went and negotiated a new car and I am left with a big decision. I can get the 2002, Passat GLX Sedan with 4 Motion for $300 less invoice. Or I can purchase the same car but a 2003 for $900 over invoice. The overal difference is about $1,470.

Something tells me I should go with the 2002, but I feel a bit left behind not buying the 2003. I guess they are the same car.

The sales guy was awesome though. We got right down to business and he gave me a fair price right up front. It took all of 15 minutes.

Now the big dilemma, do I buy the 2002 or the 2003?

Are there any thoughts out there?

    Jeff
  • jpierce26jpierce26 Member Posts: 60
I e-mailed VW.com and asked them what the "Get it or Regret it" promotion was. They took two days, but said it is a special promotion and you have to go to your local dealer to find out what it is.

Well, I went to my local dealer. Asked a number of sales people, sales manager, and even a few customers. NO ONE KNEW WHAT IT WAS...... Not even VW.

    Just goes to show ya.

Just cut a deal on a 2002 GLS with luxury, leather, & monsoon (5 speed manual) for $23,100 which is a couple of hundred below edmunds invoice. Are the dealers getting cash back or incentives for the 2002 models? It seemed too easy to get the salesman to meet my price so of course I'm skeptical. Any thoughts?

I was in the Atlanta area earlier this week and the VW dealers were advertising $199 lease on Jetta and $21,xxx on Passat. Local VW dealer wouldn't talk about any specials without a meeting.

Jpierce26, I hard-lined negotiated and got the 2003 Passat GLX for the same price as the 2002! Go to the VW site, go to dealer locator, put in a search of 200 miles, and start you're negotiating with several dealers. Trust me, they'll work with you. Two guys I recommend: VW Guild or a fella by the name of Mike Henson (Internet Manager) at Ash Tisdell VW in Jacksonville, Fla. Both are great guys and trustworthy. Getting a great, fair deal on a car is better than free oil changes on a bad deal. Let us know how it goes! SELAH!

I purchased a 2002 passat gls in late june with monsoon, luxury, homelink, and weather packages $60 below Edmund's invoice price in the Philadelphia region. There were no incentives, rebates, or holdbacks available when I purchased my car. The dealership had received a shipment that they did not expect in late May. I priced 13 dealerships in the region, and did not find any that would match this deal.
