An Oregon dealer just told me there is $1250 dealer cash or low rate financing. This was on a Jetta GLS Sedan.
  • jpierce26jpierce26 Member Posts: 60
Thanks for the push. I don't have it in me to do all that work. I am very happy with the first dealer shopping experience.

I think I am going to go with the 2002. Since there is no difference. I was able to get the $1,250 cash back. That is how it came out $300 UNDER invoice.

Just told the salesman to go ahead and locate the car for me. Should be in next week.

Price info is most helpful, but I can't tell if writers mean Dealer invoice price, Edmunds TMV price or factory invoice price.??
Sounds like it's possible to negotiate below TMV?
And even below dealer invoice price?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
TMV is a market value. Invoice is what the dealers paid for the car. There may be some factory-to-dealer incentives on 2002's that allow the dealer to sell below invoice, but inventories are drying up.

been using our *Order Guides*(model & color codes)
for their Invoice pricing and not the Actual Invoice, which is why Port Prep & FPIR are never
    included...Strange...

    Hi,

We're ready to deal on a 2003 wagon - both sitting on the dealer lot - either a GLS (auto w/ monsoon...the luxery pkg is apparently already included) or GLX (w/ tiptronic) but like many of you we don't have the '03 dealer invoice prices. Help? Dealer has offered 29,900 for the GLX and 27,790 on the GLS. Suggestions on counter-offers?

Thanks so much, Jackie and Dan
  • iclydeiclyde Member Posts: 2
Here's the deal I just made:

    2002 Passat GLS auto/ luxury/ cold weather/ monsoon/ homelink...

    Invoice $23,738
    VW "event" -$1,250
    dealer profit $400
Total price $22,888 (plus $95 in MA state fees)

Thanks to you guys I got a great deal!

As per Edmunds.com I would always suggest speaking DIRECTLY to the internet sales manager! I went onto vw.com and searched for dealerships in my neighborhood, then I requested a "quick quote" from all of them giving the EXACT specs of what I wanted. I was able to play dealers off eachother and got this great deal!

    Thanks again, EDMUNDS!

Carsdirect.com has posted the invoice prices for the 2003 Passats, with the exception of the W8's. Until Edmunds is able to get them posted, I would suggest checking there. There is also a new GL base model added to the trim levels.
  • jpierce26jpierce26 Member Posts: 60
That's a great deal. Where did you go to purchase it? I am from Rhode Island. Anyone you recommend?

    Jeff
  • djnowickdjnowick Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the carsdirect.com tip - I got the 2003 GLX pricing off there. But for the GLS they only show the 1.8T engine as an option - not the V6 - anyone know the pricing for a 2003 GLS V6 wagon?

  • djnowickdjnowick Member Posts: 6
Question for you - if anyone will know, you guys will... without the 2003 TMV pricing available yet, is it reasonable to make an offer a little over invoice? Say, 3% or so (I think I found that "modest" percentage somewhere on Edmunds at some point)? Or should I figure my offer price some other way?

    Thanks - Jackie
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Sure, you can always make an offer at a set % over invoice. Remember there are charges such as port prep and holdback reserve that most sites don't publish, as well as advertising up to $200.

I am currently negotiating with my memphis vw dealer on a price for a 2002 gls sedan automatic without options. My dealer keeps slapping on these extra prices and basically trying to make more than he should on the car but with my only other possibilities being in atlanta, I am forced to fight through the car buying game with this dealer. Can anyone give me the prices and fees to expect for the passat or how much you payed for a passat like the one I am looking at buying. I could really use the input. thanks.
  • bw848bw848 Member Posts: 2
...do what vwguild says. I paid invoice price and took the $1250 incentive, which the dealer "failed" to tell me about. This was for a 2002 manual transmission GLX. Not your car, I know, but the advice remains the same.
  • christie6christie6 Member Posts: 4
I tried to buy a 2003 Passat GLX automatic with triptronic and ESP today. The dealer refused to go below $29,800. The sticker price was $30,680 plus the dealer wanted to add a $300 service charge. I said no thanks. The dealer seemed to think that the car was so popular it was worth the price. I thought the price was totally out of line. So what should I pay for this car? I was willing to go to $28,800 (including the $300 fee).

Can you please tell me if I can combine the $1250 dealer cash and low lease APR (ranging from 2.64% to 3.8%) on 2002 VW vehicles?

    Thanks in advance.

    Sam
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
No, you cannot. Those are Volkswagen Credits
Program rules...The Dealer can only offer you a
    choice...you can't *double dip*...

GMAC & Ford Motor Credit carry the same stipulations...

I'm in the market (Sunnyvale, CA) for a 2003 GLS 1.8T sedan 5-speed manual transmission with leather interior and monsoon sound system. I've been quoted $23,484 for this, except no monsoon sound system. It's also in my exterior/interior color selections. Should I jump at this price, even if it means ordering it and waiting?

    VWGuild, any comments?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
I think you should email vwguild for a more direct answer. He's very cautious about talking price at Edmund's.

I agree with raybear. Talk to VWguild. He's awesome! Good luck, and happy hunting!

I just got a 2003 GLX about 1 month ago. The car runs great. I talked to tons of dealers, and vwguild on this site was extremely helpful. Being a fellow Georgian (Savannah), I went outside the state for my deal. Mike Henson, the internet manager at Ash Tisdelle in Jackonville, Fla., was upfront and honest from the very beginning to the very end. Good luck, and if you need any more help or info, let me know!
  • christie6christie6 Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the information. The dealer in Florida sounds great. I fell to temptation this afternoon, though. After calling around to other dealers and getting prices just as high for cars I wanted less, I decided to bite the bullet. They did come down about $1,000 dollars off of the list so perhaps I shouldn't complain. I just love the car! Had to have it! Good luck with your car. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I plan on enjoying mine.

I'm in the bay area as well....are you happy with your dealer? If so, mind passing along the name/location. The last two I've delt with have let me with a 'bad' feeling. Thanks!!

VW guild...I'm being told blue anthracite is impossible to get your hands on in the bay area. Is this true? I'm interested in a 2002 1.8T passat (auto) with leather.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
See above posts...;)Town Hall protocol prohibits anything that could
be evenly vaguely construed as solicitation, including your question
about the purported short supply of Anthracite...

just wanted to apologize for posting a message that was outside the rules. I had not idea...oops!

I'll keep mum on the salesperson/dealership per house rules. As for working with the dealers, there's no excuse to get "taken" with all of the information available on the internet these days. You should be able to get a car nowadays at a price you're comfortable with, even if the salesperson has a smile on his/her face as you drive off ;)

Does anyone out there know if it's possible to apply the 2.9% apr for the 2002 Passat to the 2003 Passat, or does it HAVE to be a 2002? Thanks!!
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
No, the whole point of incentives is to move the 2002 product out the door. You may be able to get a better price if you do your own financing.

I just noticed that the TMV page for the Passat is showing the 2003 models. Unfortunately, it doesn't show the dealer invoice yet.

Interestingly, the TMV for my zip code for both the GL and GLS version is more than the sticker price! I knew all these glowing reviews would screw up the pricing!

Try it for your area and see what you get.

    Folks,

If any one has the 2003 invoice price for the GLS Passat, V6, automatic and manual, with leather option please provide. Likewise, I would greatly appreciate hearing about any recent 2003 deals, especially those coming from the Philadelphia suburbs.

    Much obliged!

If any one has the 2003 invoice price with automatic, Monsoon, and the usual dest and fees I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks

I heard from a fleet manager that the invoice pricing for the 2003s are only going up about $200 to $300. I'm assuming that's accurate - given how some automakers are doing the same.

And then again, he could be snowballing me! ;)

If you want to know the invoice price for the car you want to buy why would you not just call your dealer? They have the most accurate and up to date information available.

It just seems to me like a lot of work to go to all of the different mediums and then you still do not know if your information is correct.
  • altair4altair4 Member Posts: 1,469
I guess I would want to see the numbers from more than one source to confirm the veracity of what the local dealer is telling me (not that I would ever think that a dealer would lie, mind you).

Being able to compare gives me a little more confidence in what the true picture is.

    Hello,

I am in the process of looking for a 2002 Passat GLS. Are there any rebates or factory-to-dealer incentives at the moment?? I have heard a rumor about a $1250 factory-to-dealer incentive, but have been unable to verify. Thank you.

    JJ
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
That $1250 is real, as long as you pass on the special financing that's offered.
  • vwnewvwnew Member Posts: 6
    Hi all,

I am in the process of negotiating a 2002 1.8 Passat. I offered the dealer invoice less the $1,200 that is the current rebate (assuming he could pocket the dealer holdback). However, he refused, saying VW does not use holdbacks. Does anyone know if this is true? I want to be fair, but if he's lying, I'd be pretty upset!

    Thanks,
    Eric

Dealer holdback is 2% of base MSRP..
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Hi Eric. The previous poster is correct. According to the information that is available here at Edmunds Volkswagen currently has a dealer holdback of "2% of the Base MSRP." For more information on dealer holdback, make sure to check out the following section of Edmunds.com: Edmunds.com Holdback Page.

I purchased a 2002 passat 1.8T GLS, auto, monsoon, back in June for $300 under dealer invoice, plus 0.9% APR for two years.

It should be easier to negotiate a deal for 2002 models compared to two months ago.
  • clscflmclscflm Member Posts: 71
Question on negotiating points: the Edmunds price listing for the 2002 GLS Passat 1.8T says there is currently no dealer cash at this time. Yet have read a few folks mentioning the $1250 rebate. I know dealers aren't obligated to pass this along, but does it exist or not? How long might this last? Until the 2002s are history? Thanks, ClscFlm
  • cephas1cephas1 Member Posts: 13
Clscflm, I would check with VW credit on that, and then check competing dealers in a certain radius (go to dealer locator on the VW website). That also sounds like a great question for VW GUILD. Good luck!
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Hi clscflm. Volkswagen is definitely providing $1,250 dealer cash on the majority of its 2002 models right now. Keep in mind during your negotiations that the cash may not be used in conjunction with VW Credit's special financing or special lease programs. I believe that this cash is only scheduled to run through the end of the month, but I don't see any reason why VW wouldn't continue it until all of its 2002 models are gone.
