I was quoted today $23,516 for a 2003 Passat GLS 1.8 T automatic, with velour interior and monsoon sound. Is this a good price? Is the monsoon worth $300? Also they would do leather for another $1300. Is this worth it?
  • welst10welst10 Member Posts: 49
I was quoted $100 over invoice for a '03 GLS V6 automatic on thursday.

i was quoted a 27500 as a drive out price for a passat GLS V4 1.8T auto, leather , monsoon.
This is broken up as 24545+tax+title+ dealership fee. The dealer is in houston. going by some of the other postings i am being quoted 2000$ more,, than the average of 25500-26000 i saw in the various postings
please advise on how i go about trying to negotiate this price.
  • preludexlpreludexl Member Posts: 33
Kevin, your price seems pretty high given a manual..also it doesnt look like you got the moonroof package. it's funny how the 2002s went for around 22.7k with automatic/leather/luxury packages....now it's jacked up to 25k? Might as well get a bimmer or lexus for 3-5 more.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
    on the above is $26,475.00...
  • caw103caw103 Member Posts: 63
i don't know who was selling 02's w/auto/lux/leather for 22.7k. Maybe with the incentives once the 03's came out but then that's to be expected. The car is a year older.

    skesava,

if you look just a few posts before yours there's a post showing a quote for the same vehicle without auto. I don't know why you think you are paying 2k more than anyone else. Everyone else is listing there prices before tax and title. Your tax figure will differ depending on trade, location.

Dealers in Silicon Valley are posting surcharges of
around 10% of MSRP on '03 Passats - one said it's because it's the beginning of the model year. Is this normal VW dealer behavior or something peculiar to this area?

I'm finding it difficult to determine Edmunds' TMV on Passats, because there seems to have been a change in the model lineup. Yesterday I test drove a '03 GL 1.8T, but the GL trim does not show in Edmunds' pages, nor on www.vw.com. Is the GL simply a GLS without sunroof?
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
...it seems strange that VW would add a GL model, when the previous GLS wasn't like super luxury equipped or anything; to get the sunroof, you had to get the luxury package (which also added alloys), cost $1500; leather was a separate package. You'd think that since VW has added the W8, the 4Motion, etc. since '98 when the Passat was restyled, they wouldn't want to further complicate things (or confuse customers) by adding a low-end model.

As for the ten percent surcharge, that's insane. Is it on all models, or just the W8 and/or 4Motion? Sounds like basic greed to me.
  • oddhackoddhack Member Posts: 12
The dealers were listing surcharges of around $2400 even on the GL and GLS models on the lot. I didn't look at the W8 as it's way out of my price range.

But the salesman I talked to at Sunnyvale VW didn't act like he really expected to get that amount.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
is just old school merchandising...and old habits die hard...Best advice...Ignore these numbers...

The new GL Passat is nothing more than an entry level Passat...Fully equipped with No Luxury Pkg. or Fogs...But everything else is there...

Try the internet department at Bob Lewis, I've had good luck with them. Straight shooter, plenty of product knowledge.
  • oddhackoddhack Member Posts: 12
Thanks. Which Bob Lewis did you use? San Jose or the other (Fremont, I think) location?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
    Try San Jose.

I am turning in my 2000 gls w/luxury package and low mileage. In order to negotiate the best price for the next lease, I am told I should have an "invoice price" for the above. Can anyone give me an idea as to what that might be? Thanks.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Hi cubanpete2. I believe that the dealer invoice price for a 2003 Volkswagen Passat GL Wagon with manual transmission should currently be $21,088 including destination. You should be able to find all of the information about this car that you need, including pricing, options, etc... on the following page: Edmunds.com 2003 Volkswagen Passat Midsize Wagon GL 4dr Wagon (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5M) Pricing. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I had the pleasure of meeting vwguild in person recently and getting a Passat demo from him. While I did end up buying an Accord instead, I recommend that anyone looking for a VW in the San Francisco Bay Area drop Peter a note. Very nice guy, and I appreciate his time and explanations.

After waiting 3 months for the factory order, my wife and I just picked up our '03 Passat GLS 1.8T manual sedan with leather and monsoon for $23571 + tax/license. Thanks to the advice of this board, we feel we received a good price and felt good about the factory order process.

Congratulations & Welcome to VW Family...Your original Indigo Blue/Beige Leather sold three weeks ago...Hope you got the same car...
  • chriswantsavwchriswantsavw Member Posts: 5
My wife LOVES the car. Yes, we got the indigo blue/beige leather...I guess the factory had no problems accepting an order for such an unusual combo (manual/indigo/beige leather). I'm sure you know how the factory accepts/rejects orders and can comment if we got lucky or not. Thanks for your advice regarding getting the price in writing up front and a commission # once the order is placed. It made the 90 day wait much more tolerable.

I have never had an order rejected for any reason, but VWOA will delete a *phony order*...

All *Sold Orders* must be accompanied by the customer's name, address, and phone #s. These are
randomly checked for veracity...If the collars &
cuffs don't match the order will be deleted...

    Enjoy!!!

    Hi:

I'm about to pull the trigger on a private party sell of a 1998 Passat GLS 4 cylinder 1.8 Liter turbo. Excellent mechanical conditon and superb body with 57,000 miles. I will be the third owner with previous owner buying VW certifed at 22,000 miles with first owner coming off lease. Owner wants $10,900 which seems fair but the car has an old tape deck, no CD, and needs a great deal of interior cleaning because of dog hair (interior fabric is black). Also a few little plastic things need fixing. Edmunds custom appraisal is at $11, 286. The car only needs a splash guard under engine. I'm concerned, however, that it is coming near the 60,000 mile check up and I could really get hurt there. Any thoughts on whether I should buy it at this price today?
  • clscflmclscflm Member Posts: 71
Congrats on your new Passat! I'm still waiting on mine, so its good to hear factory orders really do come... ;) Out of curiosity -- are you on the West coast? Happy driving! ClscFlm
  • chriswantsavwchriswantsavw Member Posts: 5
Thanks for the congrats. Yes, I'm on the west coast (Silicon Valley, CA). I don't think the port lockout caused any delays. Once I received the VIN# in early September, I was quoted a 10/29 arrival date, which was changed to 10/28 about two weeks ago and ended up very accurate.

Im considering buying a 2003 GLX Passat manual with
EPS, and the offering price is 27,700. I calculate this as approx. 700 over invoice.
Does anyone think I could negotiate for lower?
  • ktransktrans Member Posts: 2
I'm being offered a 2003 Passat GL manual, with the weather package (heated seats & nozzels) for $19,650. As far as I know that includes destination charge.

I will probably have to add title and "administration fee" of about $100.

This seems like too good a deal. Should I grab it or is something wrong here?

PLEASE respond asap. I may buy today.

    thanks!

I just bought a 2003 Passat GLS 1.8T Wagon. It's a 5 spd manual, Fresco Green, Luxury pkg (Black Leather), Monsoon Stereo, and Homelink. I paid $24,329 + taxes and tags.

Paid a base price of $28,800 including destination fee for 2003 automatic V6 passat GLX with homelink and eps. Invoice was $30,675. Has anyone gotten it for lower?

Base of $28150 for 2003 automatic V6 passat GLX with homelink and eps and CD changer.

Thanks for the info tammyb. I knew the dealer had to have hiked up the price for doing a search for the color I wanted. It ended up coming from out of state. Oh well. Can I ask what state you got yours from?

This board provided GREAT info, so wanted to post that we purchased our 2003 GLS, 1.8T, manual, Monsoon, HomeLink and Cold Weather for $22,800 (+tax, tags, title) in Central NJ.

A fair deal all around, I think.

I'm currently looking around for a replacement vehicle for my leased truck. I won't need to have another vehicle until sometime in march but I can offload my truck sooner (to family). So I'm interested in a passat but only if I can get a deal that makes the extra couple payments worthwhile.

Why is it that the value of a used 2002 GLX on edmunds is a little over 20k, while the cars.com 'black book' comes up 3-4k above that? Any opinions on what price is correct? Is edmunds taking into account the lousy used card market with all the 0% deals out there?

My other question is what a reasonable offer for a new 2002 gls with Lthr, lux, Mons, and homelink would be? I'm thinking around 23K (why offer invoice when I can get a 2003?)

I'm in Nebraska if it helps...

Has anyone taken advantage of the Green Light lease program Volkswagen is offering?
No money down - drive away and start making payments. I have a dealer quoting me a 48 month lease for $352 a month for a Passat Wagon GL automatic. It seems to be a pretty good deal. Any comments?
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
    Hi dmvoss

It's almost never a good idea to lease for more than 36/39 months. Any longer than that and you run the risk of overmileage and excess wear/tear. Granted, VW's basic warranty is 4/50, so the odds are better that you won't suffer a serious out-of-warranty repair. But you should seriously consider the financials of purchase vs 48-month lease if you really plan on keeping the vehicle that long. If you are leasing that long just for the lower payment, then you may need to consider a less expensive vehicle.

Great forum, although I discovered this board after I bought the car...

Picked up a Reflex Silver GLS w/ Tip, Lux and Leather, + ESP, in the Toronto area.

Not so great on gas, but makes driving oh so enjoyable.
  • toneman2toneman2 Member Posts: 19
Just curious, how much was that under msrp. I signed a deal a couple of weeks ago for a GLX with ESP for $38,005. MSRP is $41,005. Too late now for me too but curious whether I could have done a bit better.

PLEASE READ THIS before buying any new Volkswagen!

I bought my '00 VW GTI 1.8T brand new a couple of years ago from Flow Motors here in Winston-Salem, NC. Despite meticulous care and conscientious maintenance, the vehicle was nothing but trouble from the start.

    Here's a brief rundown:

I had the car in the shop SIX times to have window problems fixed. (The passenger door glass was replaced twice due to deep scratches caused by the power window mechanism, and the easily broken "retainer clip" which connects the window glass to the door motor had to be replaced several times as well). Try driving 40 miles down the interstate back to the dealership with the driver's window stuck in the "down" position, and you you may appreciate my mood at the time. I had to use vacation time to take the car in for service immediately, as any precipitation would have ruined the interior, and my belongings inside the vehicle were unprotected from the elements, not to mention theft.

Virtually every exterior bulb -- headlamps, turn signals, and brake lamps -- burned out on this supposedly well-built "German" vehicle within two years of purchase. One headlamp burned out TWICE, despite having been replaced with a genuine VW bulb from the dealer.

The cheap plastic hinge on the glove compartment door broke twice. The whole door has to be replaced when this happens. (Hey VW, why not use a METAL hinge if you're going to spring-load the glove box for that pleasant "dampened" feel?)

The clutch went out after only 40,000 miles (a very costly repair). Bear in mind that I did not abuse this vehicle -- most of the miles were accumulated in fifth gear on the interstate.

The air conditioner started malfunctioning last summer, leaving me drenched in sweat more than once, but luckily started working again. Don't ask why. I hate to think what a new condenser would have cost.

The turbo blew an intake valve, causing a loud "fluttering" noise during acceleration. The "check engine" light came on as well. The turbo valve cost around $200 to replace, and the part was not covered by VW's touted 100,000 mile powertrain warranty (even though the VW salesman specifically told me that the turbo WAS fully covered by the extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle).

The six-disc, trunk-mounted CD player was problematic, constantly jamming and generating a bogus "disc error" message. (I had the same problem with numerous newly-purchased CDs, so it wasn't the software.) I had to pull over, pop the hatch, remove the cartridge and "spin" all the discs to listen to any of the CDs. A nuisance to say the least, particularly while commuting or driving in bad weather.

Disgusted with the constant breakdowns, I threw up my hands and traded in my GTI on an '03 Subaru WRX after the last repair epdisode, during which I was bluntly advised by VW maintenance personnel that my inoperative driver's side window could not be repaired because no replacement parts were available anywhere in the country. (No replacement parts nationally for a '00 model! GET REAL!) It took calls to the general manager and regional service director to finally get the parts by special order, and I drove a rental for a couple of days while they replaced the assembly.

Now, after absorbing a loss on my trade to avoid more unforseen repairs, I get a letter from VW stating that they're generously extending the manufacturer's warranty to cover certain window problems. (The dealer advised me that VW has known about the problem for years, but refused to issue a timely recall, and will now have to spend a cool $100 million to replace thousands of defective power window assemblies in ALL models.)

Please, learn from my mistake and CONSIDER ALL YOUR OPTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE CHOOSING ANY VOLKSWAGEN PRODUCT. There are just too many other choices, folks, to be stuck with a sub-standard product that makes for a great test drive but provides poor reliability and dealer service down the road. If you find yourself sipping cold coffee and sitting for hours in the waiting area of your local VW repair shop while the same old defective part in your "German-engineered" vehicle is replaced yet again, you have only yourself to blame. This is a true story, and I have the service records to prove it. (I'm not alone: a friend of mine had a '00 New Beetle that needed a full brake job after only 15,000 miles and started belching black smoke soon thereafter -- another hurried trade-in.)

Look, I'm not a mechanic or race fanatic who spends a lot of time arguing about which brand is better than another. I'm just an ordinary consumer who expects a $21,000 brand new vehicle to have things like a reliable engine, working windows, a functional CD player and a useable glove box.

Don't let VW do the same thing to you -- do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and stay away from this "German-engineered" (and Argentinian built) brand until they make quality control and customer service a priority.
  • pksleungpksleung Member Posts: 3
It's about $2950 under MSRP, so it would appear that you got a better deal, unless GLX has a higher mark-up, of course.

As I finalized the deal, I did get the feeling that I could do a little better. However, considering I spent under half an hour to get to that price, I didn't think it's worth the trouble to spend another two hours to try to knock another couple of hundred dollars off.

Odd your profile indicates you own a 94 Saturn and are shopping for a Maxima - did a turbo GTI blow your Saturn's doors off and now your mad so you post a bunch of lies?

I run into this all the time on these boards - My GTI has been perfect - no regrets whatsoever.
  • toneman2toneman2 Member Posts: 19
I am sure that there is more mark up on the GLX. At least our deals are in the same ball park. Unfortunately I had to waste considerably more time to get to my price than you did - 2 trips to each of two different dealers. I would much rather have not had to waste the time and get it on the first try as you were able to do.
  • pksleungpksleung Member Posts: 3
My total car shopping experience took considerably more time too, for things like online research, multiple test drives, calling brokers and other dealerships. When I said 30 minutes I was referring only to the time I took to negotiate with the dealership that I eventually bought from.

One lesson I learned is that if one dealership is willing to sell the car to you @ a certain price, other dealers would do too. The important thing is to find a price that you judge is workable, then stick to it as much as possible. Tell them upfront you have talked to other dealerships, and you have no interest in spending more than half an hour haggling.

I've been quoted $23,836 for a 2003 Blue Anthracite Passat GLS 1.8T, with 5 speed transmission, the leather package (black), moonsoon stereo, and homelink. How does this sound to you guys? It sounded pretty fair to me (about $700 over invoice, and lower than edmunds TMV). What is a good price to shoot for? I've heard 2-3% over invoice is a good deal.

Additionally, this quote was from an internet manager. Can you still negotiage an internet quoted price? I've seen people here who apparently get cars at invoice. Is that common/reasonable?

Alright, I know its alot of questions, but whatever info you can provide would be very helpful!

It sounds to me like you have done what everyone is seeking to do, but maybe you should try dealing with the line salesman on Saturday...Be prepared to spend 3,4,5 hours and then get back to us...:)

Has anyone heard what the new rates are for this month?, old ones ended yesterday? Passat hasn't changed in 2 months but maybe this will be the month it comes down more...
