Is an 01 Coupe.. not bad.

It has 41K miles, that't no help and it's a 5-Speed? I'd see if Bret still wants to give ya $10K for it..

I'm afraid this is a $8K car. I'd say $7500 but if it's spotless and Silver.. I could see $8K, maybe $82-83 if they think they can retail it.

This is a $8K car before it got smacked... I'd hit it at $6500 wholesale.

$9K realistic? I think in Atlanta it is. I'd ask and see what happens. Should be an easy sale there. Carfax probably won't show an accident from Georgia, but if they ask, I would be honest.

But it's worth mid-$15Ks all day long.

Umm, no. I cant buy them in the northeast with double those miles for that! $20K.. but the right dealer (It IS the right color, has a slider, butt warmers, sport pack) I could see it bringing $21K.

I'd love to take it in for $17K and take it to the auction and make $4K with it myself as well!

stumbled across this discussuion on my lunch today. have a 93 Mazda MPV 4wd with 101000 miles that i bought new. No accidents, very clean and mechanically in good shape. Any thoughts on what this is worth on a private party sale in upstate NY are welcome

I think this is about a $1,300-1500 wholesale piece if it's in nice shape.

But I would do this in the paper:

1993 Mazda MPV V6 4WD. Original Owner, 101K miles, clean in an out, no accidents, nonsmoker (if it applies) runs and drives very well. $3,500/bo

And I wouldnt take under $3K.

Welcome back Bill. We all missed you the past few months. Glad someone has nice weather!

Ok, saw this sitting at a local Ford dealership??, a black '03 G35 w/ beige leather guts, premium package (Bose, power seats, dual climate control), sunroof, and 18k miles, an awful lot for an '03. No dings or paint jobs. They had marked $29.9, which is getting pretty close to MSRP on brand new one from the Infiniti lot (I think ~$32k).

Ya missed my post, but hey that's ok cause neither of those trucks were worth a hoot anyway.

However, our truck search is over. We got a baby doll too. 1994 Chevy Silverado K2500, 7.4L, 127k, 4WD, auto, x-cab, long bed, black/red & gray interior, pwr locks/windows, cruise, am/fm cass, a/c, bucket seats, and knee deep in rubber. Did we pay too much, probably, do I care, nope. This is a once in a lifetime truck, bought it right out from under the owner of the dealership, he was using it to pull his snowmobile trailer. Just had over $2k worth of work put into it. Its a 2 owner truck, non-smoker and a total sweety, looks like an 02 inside and out. We just got back from Anchorage with it, nice 5 hour drive to test it out.

The Suburban's transmission and rear pinion were trying hard to let go while we were down there, thankfully it was good while the guy test drove it. Gave us $4100 (no over-allowance) for it too, he really liked it, figure I got all da money and a bag of chips too. I know when to not look a gift car lot owner in the mouth.

We recently traded the wifes 93 Ford Escort wagon for a 2003 Chevy Malibu. With just a few minutes of negotiation, we got the Edmunds dealer retail price for trade in. It helped that the Escort was immaculate with only 29,000 miles on it..a true "little old lady from Pasadena" car. That, coupled with the Chevy rebate, made the Malibu a real bargain. We looked at cars costing thousands more, but none offered anywhere near the value for the money as did the Malibu.

.... I think perhaps Bill was a little over-anxious on that $21 figure .. these are nice vehicles and this one is loaded up with the right color combo and low miles .. $17 ..? nope, not today .. maybe in about 5/6 months, they musta been shopping at a Honda store .l.o.l.

      But they are plentiful, it's dead winter in Philly and it's a Rwd vehicle, in a front wheel drive season .. I feel the mid to high $19's would be just about all of it ..

...... Good point - Sounds like you did good all the way around .. Clean, low mileage vehicles are hard to find (even Escorts) ..

Malibu's are a great bargain, and even a much better bargain on the pre-owned side .. 00 ultra clean, super nice, miles in the teens, loaded up LS's with all the stuff, V6, slider, leather, wheels, yatty, yatty yatty can be had for much less than that $10,0 figure with a little shopping around ..

My original post was number 10965. The 92 I mentioned turned out to be a 93 and not a 454, it was a 350. We test drove it and the tranny was going south fast. They wanted too much for it and seemed shocked when we told them it had major issues.

The deal on the 94 ended up being my truck and $6895 (a total of $10,995). Did I pay too much? Yup, I'm sure I did, but this was the one time in my life I can honestly say I don't care in the least bit, this truck was worth it. It served more than once purpose since we financed it.....as I'm sure you remember my email, so you understand.

Haven't been around for a while but I see this discussion is still going strong. Would appreciate a pro's opinion on this...a friend has a 2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x2 with 18000 miles. It's in South Florida and it's dark green color. The lease buyout is $21168...what do you think would be a fair price to pay though?

You should see all the Florida cruisers Bill has on his lot. Mercury Grand Marquis', Town Cars, Continentals, and Sedan Devilles, all with the full Cleveland treatment. Toyota Avalons with Vogue tires, gold kits, and wire wheels. Then there's the dark green Buick Roadmaster with the "I love bowling" decals that got damaged the other day. Ruined the padded fabric top from the windshield header to the trunk. Bill almost ate his AARP card after seeing the damage.

But if FoMoCo says NoWayJose... $21,168 isnt a bad price at all, it's about what I'd expect to see it do across the block at Lauderdale/Miami AA. (I have one of their reports in my hand right now, one with 24K on it, but a red one, did $21,700 down there 2 weeks ago)

This ALL Assumes it has the 5.4L engine, but those are low miles for an Expy.. And it is an EB..

I also assume 3rd seat and dual AC.

Are you serious they are that strong in the used market? To me, it doesn't make that much sense to buy used in this case, does it? If a 20k miler is only 3k less than a brand new, wow... these things are stronger than He-Man. I really like the new G35 coupe, thats a sharp car. Will the coupes be as strong or stronger? Seems like they are REALLY hot.

Terry, I bet there are people who are buying these puppies at $100 over invoice, huh? We'll hear from a few. I'll believe them as soon as h*** freezes over.

It's a forest vs. trees issue; sometimes new is better.

And sometimes you're just out of luck. For instance, if you needed a large SUV in 1997/98 -- the new ones were strong, the used ones were even stronger, and there was no way to avoid the depreciation that hit around 2001 when the big Tahoes/Expeditions/what have yous were coming off lease and were all over the place.

Actually, a few folks drove them fairly inexpensively if they leased them right; I remember an article about how large SUVs were coming in with $24 residuals and bringing barely $17 at the auctions... that was summer of '01 or thereabouts.

This business changes with the wind... which is why I love this discussion. Thanks, guys!

I agree you, Mathias, on the devaluation of certain vehicles, it will happen sooner or later.

But my point is, at this time, why would i buy a used G35 w/ 20k miles when i can walk into an Infiniti dealer with a brand new vehicle for just another $2k? In this case, it seems cheaper to buy new, you have a vehicle with a longer life, better resale when you go to sell it (granted you turn the same amount of miles on new vs used), known history, longer warranty, better loan rates on brand new cars (typically, not always, but on the avg), maintenance is further away (don't have to worry about brakes, tires, 30k checkup,etc..), so on and so on. With cars these strong, its hard to find an arugment to buy used. Both cars, either way, will take a hit when the depreciation pulls more in line, but I think your much better off in a new one here.

Bill, a buddy of mine has a G35, drives nice, smooth vehicle... he loves it too. As well, have to see the new Max in person next month. I have been a faithfull Max owner for awhile.

On the Expedition, all your assumptions are correct.

The lease is for 3 years/36000 miles and the finance company (World Omni) doesn't know that the true miles are only 18000. If possible can you tell me how what it might take for World Omni to part with the car given that they think it has almost 36000 clicks?

Of course if World Omni insures the residuals then it becomes a moot point...

If the residual is in the contract, and they have a purchase option, then they can by all means buy it.

From an ethical standpoint, I see no reason why they should not take advantage of their good fortune.

..... Bill is right, this is a pretty good deal on the EB, even if it's a 4.6 .. but still, just for the "grins and glory of it, I would try to negotiate the pay-off with a regional or a district Mgr from WO, can't hurt .. they might klick off a nick or so, maybe more if properly handled ..

Right now, they have to grab the vehicle, stage it, transport it, detail it and rep it at FAAO (or wherever) .. who knows, but the residual and the pay-off is great and that doesn't happen too often .. most dealers will be looking to get $25+ for it.
