.... Hey Brent .. Yeah, every once in a while I will "stroll" through some of those crazy posts .l.o.l. there is more BS going on there than a drunken' Fraternity house party .. I just ignore 99.9999% of them anyway, but some are pretty funny.!

I just paid $100 over on a G35, did I get a good deal .? I just paid $100 over on a new H2, did I get a good deal .? I just paid $100 over on a LS430, did I get ripped off .? I just paid $1,500 back of invoice on a E500, plus we got a free cruise to Jamaica, oil changes, tune-up's for life and Lypo suction for my wife, did I get a good deal .? -- some of these folks need to get off their med's and quit snorting Drano .. the funny part is, the more expensive the vehicle, the crazier the stories get.

It's funny you bring this up .. a couple of weeks ago I was in Scottsdale for some golf and to check out the AZ auctions .. a friend of mine is a Bimmer dealer there, so someone here had posted, how they had paid $500 over on a new Z4, plus they ordered it, plus the dealer gave them a new 3 series to drive while they waited 8 wks for their new vehicle -- That one, I HAD to print .. and I HAD to drop it in his golf bag before tee time .. l.o.l... it's the only way I could beat him by 10 strokes ..

I'm a player on that Avalon if in addition to the vogues, it has the full gold package and an add-on ragtop!
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Not only did the Avalon have Vogues, gold kit, and the padded landau roof, but it also had opera lights and fine Corinthian leather!!

Man, that car was Pimptastic. Looked awesome next to the Alfa 164L's and the Land Rovers.

An Alfa 164 with 20" chromes, vogues and a carraige roof!

The horses are doing great, show season is going to be starting soon. We are just tickled to have a truck that can pull our horse trailer, I certainly wasn't going to trust the suburban. As for another arabian, um, no thanks, the one I have is bad enough, although, she did win me a ton of championships last year.

I think we did ok on the deal too, I mean we got a truck that just had all the stuff done to it that it needed and we got rid of a truck that needed LOTS of repairs. I think the only one that had morning after regrets on this deal was the boss man who stepped into my Suburban.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
OK guys.. Bret can spread these vicious rumors...

But you all know I own Vauxhall of Orlando.

As far as those deals.. I remember someone saying he was able to buy a new M3 (This was last year) for $1,000 over invoice. I responded with "Show me proof and I'll give you $1,000"

    No response oddly enough!

40K miles.. biarritz blue/tan leather, prem pak, sunroof, steptronic. one owner, but originally service loaner.. warranty to 55K and june/2004. Body and interior are good, looks like no bodywork. I see certified at dealer for $33-35K. This is at a little used car lot. The kind of place where he has to run them back thru the auction when his 90 days are up. I happen to know he paid cash for this one though from a private buyer.. asking $29,900. What do you think he has in it? And what would be a good price? Thanks.

how much under Edmunds trade in value could a person honestly expect a dealership to give on a trade? For ex. $1000 under on average....$2000 I know it depends on condition but lets say the car had nothing wrong with it. Thanks.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
$29,900 isnt an unrealistic asking price. My guess is they have $25K in it. If it were me, I'd expect to "get" $27,500 for it. I'd start them at $26K, expect to pay in the $27s-28, real money.

I never use kbb.com..etc.. I always go by whatever the market is up to at the moment.

It's just too tough to use any online guide as a hard-and-fast rule.

to see what the market is currently at for trade in values through a dealer. I know I can look at a local paper to see what people are asking retail for but I want to have a basic idea of what I should expect from a dealer. All I am asking is on average how much below book trade in value should I expect to recieve from a dealer. Thanks Bill
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
It's a common misconception that you can look at the paper and see what stuff is selling for... I prefer to look at it as the prices that vehicles are NOT selling for. It's not unusual, at least around here, to see the same '99 Camry or 97 Silverado sit in the classifieds for one or two months, sometimes longer. There's plenty of folks that are, how you say, a little slow on the uptake...

I'm considering buying a 2000 Cadillac Catera or 2000 Chrysler 300M. I plan on keeping the car several years. Which car do you guys like better. And what can I buy the follwing examples for in NJ:
2000 Catera 25,197 mi. Black, dark interior lthr, moonroof (used car dealer) list price $14,995
2000 300M 34,958 mi. champagne/grey int. lthr htd seats (new car dealer) list price $15,765

is thinking about opening up a small used lot and I am trying to learn everything I possibly can before I just into the business. I heard this is a wonderful site to do that. So to get a assumption of what a trade in is worth you really have to know what they are going for at dealer auctions I take it.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
To me the Catera sounds like the better deal but you should make sure its the best car for you. The 300M is a larger car, esp larger trunk and rear seat room. If you carry passengers, have kids, and take trips it may be the better choice. Plus the 300M's is front wheel drive and that should be better in the snow.

The Catera is smaller but more personal feeling, sportier, and will have a more balanced "European" ride. I imagine a good set of snow tires and traction control will get you thru winters. I like the lower miles on the Caddy. Dealer treatment from Caddy is better IMO.

I'd offer some pricing opinions but last time I did that I was off by $2000 so I'll let Bill & Terry handle the numbers.

Both cars are nice. I'm sure you'll like either one.

I'm from Montclair, NJ. I had a 97 Catera that I liked, but I had a couple of minor repair issues. Wondering if the 2000 redesign improved reliability. There's a south jersey Cadillac dealer that has about 7 used 2000 Cateras ranging in mileage from 11,713-25,731. They've been sitting on the lot for a while. What do you think he has in them and how much do you think it would take for him to part with one.

    Real world trade-in value for:
    1998 Mercury Mountaineer
*V8 AWD, AM/FM/CAS/CD, power moon roof, power driver's seat, leather, compass-exterior temp, keyless entry, towing package w/aftermarket Class 3/4 receiver
    *Blue exterior/grey interior
    *108,500 miles, 1 owner
    *no damage history
*car had 100K Ford extended warranty so it's in excellent mechanical condition
*exterior is good condition. Small crease in rear liftgate from a shopping cart, some scratches around the trailer hitch, small scuff on lower-rear corner of plastic bumper cover.
*Interior is average. A few scratches on the leather and the carpet is dirty.
*Tires have 40,000 miles on them.

    Southern New Hampshire

    Edmunds says for a trade:
    Base price: $8,464
    Regional Adjustment $-90
    Optional Equipment $638
    Color Adjustment $-35
    Mileage Adjustment $-1,798
    Condition Adjustment $0
    Total $7,179

Kelly Blue Book says $7235 as a trade

Is it reasonable to expect $7K as a trade on another Mountaineer?

.... You are looking at 2 real good "bangs for the buck" ..

There is lot's of Catera's rolling around right now .. the Rwd might have something to do with alot sitting up north right now ..

But the ultra clean , low milers (15/20k) with chromes, Bose, bun warmers, slider, etc, are doing around the high $11's, low $12's .. so, by the time they pay the fee, transport, a detail, a little this a little that, it should hit the table at around $13 tops, so I would be heading to the low miler units .. $14,9 is a fair asking price, but I would start em' up at $13,9 and see what happens.

The nice thing about these are, there is lot's of factory warranty left 48/50,000 .. personally, I like em', I bought 3-03 CTS's on Thursday (too radical for me) I like the Catera's better and they have worked out a lot of things .. but it's your bucks, so always Buy and drive what You like.

The 300M's aren't bad and they are also a great buy on the used side .. the one you are looking at is a little stiff in miles and a little stiff in the price category .. I would think the high $14's would be just about all of it ..

Not knowing your budget, but you may want to take a close look at a 00 Lincoln LS .. most of those should be had for $19 or less ..

             I hope this helps ....

                 Terry.

...... Soooo, your from New Hamshaw, so I'm sure they will throwing the Galves book at you .. you probably won't like this one .. it get's back to the old adage "live by the books, die by the books" ..

The V8 AWD is a big plus .. but the miles are gonna come back and slap Ya right upside your head .. if it's a nice one, service is all there, no terrorists in the back seats, no drive by's, no meteorite hit's, just a clean driver with lot's of miles .. then trade side, you will be lookin' in and around that $4,5/$5,0 zipcode .. sorry.

But -- This is actually a great vehicle for Retail Rd - all the service records on the front seat, a nice detail, a great big 5 liner Ad in the paper for $7,9 .. and let one of those nice Grand Bank fishermen take it home for $6,5/$7,5 ..

I just had my first close encounter. The mileage penalty is vastly different from what Edmunds and KBB calculate. It's $100/1000 miles. The 2 web sites are roughly half that. I don't quite understand what the true value is at auction. My S.O. is well-connected in the auction business so my next step is to get a data point from those sources.

then trade side, you will be lookin' in and around that $4,5/$5,0 zipcode .. sorry.

Nope. It's called "resetting expectations." I was expecting ~$7K based on web-based information. The first dealership I visited started at 50% of that.

But -- This is actually a great vehicle for Retail Rd - all the service records on the front seat, a nice detail, a great big 5 liner Ad in the paper for $7,9 .. and let one of those nice Grand Bank fishermen take it home for $6,5/$7,5 ..

It's actually better than that. The car just went off a Ford 100K extended warranty so the repair and maintanence history is there for the asking since it was all warranty work. It's February in New Hampshah so the interior is a pig pen but I suppose I could get it detailed and sell it retail if I had to. Spare time to sell a car privately is a huge issue for me so I have to look at other options.

I see that you guys were laughing about someone who claimed to have purchased a 2003 BMW Z4 for $500 over dealer invoice. Well, I actually know two people who have been able to purchase a new Z4 recently for $500 over, one ordered their car and has already taken delivery of it and the other purchased one off of the lot. Obviously they didn't get a free loaner car for 8 weeks or whatever the other poster claims to have gotten, but $500 over on a Z4 is definitely possible.

Yup. As someone who owns a part of a BMW dealership and reads the cross-sell reports for my area, yeah I thought that was kind of out there.

Maybe some dealer up North had a lot full of snow covered convertibles and blew one out. But that is not indicative of market on them.

When they first came out I bought a new SC430 for $1,000 over invoice. Does that mean that it's a realistic price? No, I was very good friends with the dealer.

I'm with Terry on the Mountaineer.

The on-line sources do not accurately punish cars for high miles.

Take a 2000 S500. KBB Shows one in "good" condition with 32K miles to be worth $46,790 which is not outrageously high, it's about a $44K-44,500 car IMO.

Take the same car with 105K miles. They say $32K when I checked.

    02/13/2003MANHEIM$ 26,250 98,764

That's what a high miler just did at the sale in PA

They say with 265,000 miles it's worth $27K or so!

As far as the Mountaineer... Here's 2 in PA recently:

    01/22/2003BUTLER$ 4,950 109,00

    02/06/2003BUTLER$ 4,950 115,538

    And the Windy City..

    02/13/2003CHICAGO$ 4,700 103,103

    And Kansas City...

    01/29/2003KC$ 4,600 105,803

etc... KBB and Edmunds get notoriously inaccurate on high-milers I;m afraid.

I am trying to trade in a fully loaded 1999 Buick Regal LSE with less than 24,000 miles. Chevy dealer said they were going for $7,000 at auction. BMW dealer said Buick wholesalers were offering $5,000. Edmunds says about $8,500. Both dealers said they would not put the car on their lot but would send it to auction. Is this a true value or another dealer negotiation tactic? Thanks.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
If that car is a good color, and just jam-up Perfect as Terry likes to say.

No paintwork, not dinged up, nonsmoker.. just in the wrapper, then $5K is a joke. $7K is light, But close.

I think this is a $7500-8K car myself if it is an LS (LSE?) and a Baby doll to the right buyer.

I presume these are auction prices?

Regardless, I now consider myself better educated about high mileage used car values. I think it's really unfortunate that Edmunds (and others) set unrealistic expectations for people trading in cars. If I were a car dealer, I'd want to give the public access to Galves or even raw data from auto auctions.

    Thanks for the data points.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
it isn't just Edmunds that is unrealistic about mileage hits....

NADA, KBB, all of them don't hit a car like a car should be hit on miles - then again, a 120,000 mile Honda Accord could get sold retail at the dealership I worked at in Medford, OR - in 1999, we sold a 279,000 mile Accord - of course, it was perfect, bought there, serviced there, all the records, old lady owned it, etc.

What most people don't realize is once you take a vehicle over 100K (even 80K in most places), it loses most or all of its retail appeal. Since a vehicle wouldn't getting retailed, book allowances are pretty much worthless and the value is then just what someone will pay for it.

Either trade before 80K, or don't get mad because no one wants to pony up for book value on your ride!

    Aye they are.

Figure they have $175 or so in sell fees, $40 to ship it to the sale.. $175 (From the sounds of it) to detail it all up...

I'd hit your truck around $4K myself, I like it a bit less than Terry does based on your description. This is why I don't ever use the online guides.. Im more worried about what the market is actually up to myself. Sorry to be the bearer and all...

If it's extra nice for a '90, cold AC, the buttons still make things work, etc...

I'd ask $2,300 or so.. It's probably worth, real transaction money, $1500-1700.

..... There may be a 2.5 with an option here and there, that someone might drop kick off the driveway .. but a loaded up 3.0 with the power drop top and all the stuff, I would think would be a real hard one to snatch for a Nick over .. anywhere. And let's not forget that nice driver for 8 weeks ..l.o.l..

..... Where do you live -.? Nice vehicle .. right color, right options, slider, bun warmers, everything was going your way til' we got to the mileage part .. Ouch.!

Your another one that needs to get a g/f close to home .. I doubt, it would even break $10 on a trade -- So, if you take a trip down Retail Rd, a super detail, deep in rubber, service is 100%, then $12,5 in the paper and the first Real buyer at $11/$12, then you should make them an owner .. lot's of SS competition out there, and you have miles and lot's of them.

    ok...first my ride:

95 BMW 318ti - Black basic 5-speed (no options), after market sunroof (no leaks), cloth interior, a.m. alarm system and stereo (cassette, 8 speaker +sub, 10-disc -good quality), smoked in, but doesn't stink, few dings, few rock chips, one decent scratch along back trunk (7"), steel wheels, 74k miles - runs very strong

Online market shows $6-7 trade in (no account of a.m.) and up to $9.2 dealer retail.

    What should I expect?

the ride I am considering: 02 Subaru Impreza Wagon TS - never titled, 84 miles, blue, auto, no real add-ons (arm rest and tail pipe cover is all). MSRP sticker shows $19,127 with dest.

03 Imprezas are $500 incentive, what would a left over 02 fetch? Also, dealer has four on lot, all about even for options, all auto, four different colors...does this smell like they bought other dealer's leftover 02 inventory?

    What is fair price?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Let's see here .. it's a 95, with 75 klicks, we got a handshaker, no help there, we have a few scratches and a nice, big one down the trunk, no help there .. and we have a aftermarket sunroof, definitely no help there at all ..

If it's deep in rubber and needs -0- for service, you are looking in and around the $4,0's depending on the dealer ..

The 02 Sub is a leftover (rare I would think, where do you live.?) .. all things considered, the TS's are definitely holding their own, the ultra nice low milers are doing in the $14/$15 range at the block and that's strong, so it's easy to figure the dealers are asking waaay into the $17's on the retail side.

I'm sure the dealer want's to say bye bye to that pup .. take invoice, then subtract any and all rebates and incentives .. might even throw a few more bucks in the trade to end this scary scenario ..

            Thanks for stopping by ...

Considering trading in my loaded Jeep (yellow). (Soft / hard tops - tinted, AC, 11.5k miles, never off road, 30.5 inch wheel package, soundbar w/ upgraded speakers and subwoofer - only thing it doesn't have is sentry key) Edmunds lists trade at 13,500.....I purchased this Jeep for close to $10k more in October 2001, has it really depreciated this far?

New car will be a 2003 Subaru WRX, which are selling below invoice.

The auction price data points and rule-of-thumb guesstimates were really useful.

I ended up trading the 98 Mountaineer with a gazillion miles on it for $4750 and paid dealer invoice for another one. The $2500 rebate and $750 loyalty rebate eased the pain. Everybody is happy.

"Great condition" means perfect paint with no dings or scratches, truck's never been used for towing or hauling, bed and interior are in showroom condition, tires are like new. All this true?

Earlier I asked for a trade-in value on my 2001 Prelude, an automatic with 19,300 miles. I was thinking of trading it on a four-cylinder Honda Accord EX sedan.

Last night I hit one of Pennsylvania's infamous potholes...when I took it the Honda dealer today, he told me that the suspension is fine, but the passenger-side front wheel is bent. He quoted me a replacement price of $409.

My question is this: should I let the wheel on the car and tell the dealer about it when I trade, or have it replaced before trading it in? Will a mildly bent wheel lower the trade-in price dramatically?

In all likelihood, I'll be buying from the dealer who has been servicing the car since I bought it new (the same dealer who told me that the wheel is bent, but that the suspension is fine). This dealer has all of the car's service records. Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
they'll still have to replace the wheel and you'll get hit with a generic retail price for it.

Best thing is to call Harry's U-Pull-It in Hazelton or go on www.car-parts.com and look for a used replacement wheel - should cost less than $100 at car-parts, less than $50 at Harry's.

Let me know if you have trouble finding one and I'll help you look locally -

    (1) where is the truck located?

    --- Michigan

    (2) Color inside and out

    --- Patriot blue, grey cloth.

    (3) Any recent service or repairs like tires or brakes or similar?

--- Oil, plugs, filter, and minor stuff like that. Brakes and tires are fine.

"Great condition" means perfect paint with no dings or scratches, truck's never been used for towing or hauling, bed and interior are in showroom condition, tires are like new. All this true?

--- I am not privy to the exact terminology, but I would suspect "perfect" or "excellent" condition would more accurately describe the condition you reference above. Is it showroom quality? No. It's two years old and has 30,000 miles. It needs a new rear bumper because of a very low impact parking-lot-esque type accident (which will be taken care of), but other than that it is "great". It's been used to tow a single relatively light jet-ski about 10 times.

Compared to a brand new show room vehicle, I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. Compared to another 2001 with 30,000 miles, I'd give it a 9.9 out of 10... unless there are others out there garage keeping their ram, keeping it out of rain and snow, and rubbing it with a diaper daily... I'd say that mine is probably as good as it's going to get.

I agree with Terry that you may be able to get $1500 for your 90 Taurus with 99k miles if it is in very good condition.

Personally, however, up here in the frozen tundra outside of Chicago where we are not allergic to Detroit sedans, I could pick up any number of 95 Taurus similarly equipped with 70-75k miles for $3-3,300. There are just tons of them here.

I would be surprised that if there is a lot of interest, although I might be wrong.

I was offered $5,000 trade in for my 1996 Chevy Blazer LS 4x4 /w 55,000 miles. Has power driver's seat, cd radio, alarm, new tires. I live in Raleigh, NC. Looks like new inside and out - had it detailed before I went to the dealer. But it does the shakes when over 60mph.

I was looking at a Chevy Avalanche. If the Blazer lost that much value then maybe I don't want another Chevy.

Is $5,000 about what I can expect? Thanks.

    Methinks.. $11K, maybe $11,500.

Might see $12K if it's really nice and bumper is undented. But I would Defer to Terry for a more accurate ##..
