I just paid $100 over on a G35, did I get a good deal .? I just paid $100 over on a new H2, did I get a good deal .? I just paid $100 over on a LS430, did I get ripped off .? I just paid $1,500 back of invoice on a E500, plus we got a free cruise to Jamaica, oil changes, tune-up's for life and Lypo suction for my wife, did I get a good deal .? -- some of these folks need to get off their med's and quit snorting Drano .. the funny part is, the more expensive the vehicle, the crazier the stories get.
It's funny you bring this up .. a couple of weeks ago I was in Scottsdale for some golf and to check out the AZ auctions .. a friend of mine is a Bimmer dealer there, so someone here had posted, how they had paid $500 over on a new Z4, plus they ordered it, plus the dealer gave them a new 3 series to drive while they waited 8 wks for their new vehicle -- That one, I HAD to print .. and I HAD to drop it in his golf bag before tee time .. l.o.l... it's the only way I could beat him by 10 strokes ..
Terry :-))
Man, that car was Pimptastic. Looked awesome next to the Alfa 164L's and the Land Rovers.
I think we did ok on the deal too, I mean we got a truck that just had all the stuff done to it that it needed and we got rid of a truck that needed LOTS of repairs. I think the only one that had morning after regrets on this deal was the boss man who stepped into my Suburban.
But you all know I own Vauxhall of Orlando.
As far as those deals.. I remember someone saying he was able to buy a new M3 (This was last year) for $1,000 over invoice. I responded with "Show me proof and I'll give you $1,000"
No response oddly enough!

It's just too tough to use any online guide as a hard-and-fast rule.

2000 Catera 25,197 mi. Black, dark interior lthr, moonroof (used car dealer) list price $14,995
2000 300M 34,958 mi. champagne/grey int. lthr htd seats (new car dealer) list price $15,765
The Catera is smaller but more personal feeling, sportier, and will have a more balanced "European" ride. I imagine a good set of snow tires and traction control will get you thru winters. I like the lower miles on the Caddy. Dealer treatment from Caddy is better IMO.
I'd offer some pricing opinions but last time I did that I was off by $2000 so I'll let Bill & Terry handle the numbers.
Both cars are nice. I'm sure you'll like either one.
Terry.

Edmunds says for a trade:
Base price: $8,464
Regional Adjustment $-90
Optional Equipment $638
Color Adjustment $-35
Mileage Adjustment $-1,798
Condition Adjustment $0
Total $7,179
Kelly Blue Book says $7235 as a trade
Is it reasonable to expect $7K as a trade on another Mountaineer?
There is lot's of Catera's rolling around right now .. the Rwd might have something to do with alot sitting up north right now ..
But the ultra clean , low milers (15/20k) with chromes, Bose, bun warmers, slider, etc, are doing around the high $11's, low $12's .. so, by the time they pay the fee, transport, a detail, a little this a little that, it should hit the table at around $13 tops, so I would be heading to the low miler units .. $14,9 is a fair asking price, but I would start em' up at $13,9 and see what happens.
The nice thing about these are, there is lot's of factory warranty left 48/50,000 .. personally, I like em', I bought 3-03 CTS's on Thursday (too radical for me) I like the Catera's better and they have worked out a lot of things .. but it's your bucks, so always Buy and drive what You like.
The 300M's aren't bad and they are also a great buy on the used side .. the one you are looking at is a little stiff in miles and a little stiff in the price category .. I would think the high $14's would be just about all of it ..
Not knowing your budget, but you may want to take a close look at a 00 Lincoln LS .. most of those should be had for $19 or less ..
I hope this helps ....
Terry.
The V8 AWD is a big plus .. but the miles are gonna come back and slap Ya right upside your head .. if it's a nice one, service is all there, no terrorists in the back seats, no drive by's, no meteorite hit's, just a clean driver with lot's of miles .. then trade side, you will be lookin' in and around that $4,5/$5,0 zipcode .. sorry.
But -- This is actually a great vehicle for Retail Rd - all the service records on the front seat, a nice detail, a great big 5 liner Ad in the paper for $7,9 .. and let one of those nice Grand Bank fishermen take it home for $6,5/$7,5 ..
Terry :-)
so I'm sure they will throwing the Galves book at you
I just had my first close encounter. The mileage penalty is vastly different from what Edmunds and KBB calculate. It's $100/1000 miles. The 2 web sites are roughly half that. I don't quite understand what the true value is at auction. My S.O. is well-connected in the auction business so my next step is to get a data point from those sources.
then trade side, you will be lookin' in and around that $4,5/$5,0 zipcode .. sorry.
Nope. It's called "resetting expectations." I was expecting ~$7K based on web-based information. The first dealership I visited started at 50% of that.

It's actually better than that. The car just went off a Ford 100K extended warranty so the repair and maintanence history is there for the asking since it was all warranty work. It's February in New Hampshah so the interior is a pig pen but I suppose I could get it detailed and sell it retail if I had to. Spare time to sell a car privately is a huge issue for me so I have to look at other options.

Yup. As someone who owns a part of a BMW dealership and reads the cross-sell reports for my area, yeah I thought that was kind of out there.
Maybe some dealer up North had a lot full of snow covered convertibles and blew one out. But that is not indicative of market on them.
When they first came out I bought a new SC430 for $1,000 over invoice. Does that mean that it's a realistic price? No, I was very good friends with the dealer.
Bill
The on-line sources do not accurately punish cars for high miles.
Take a 2000 S500. KBB Shows one in "good" condition with 32K miles to be worth $46,790 which is not outrageously high, it's about a $44K-44,500 car IMO.
Take the same car with 105K miles. They say $32K when I checked.
02/13/2003MANHEIM$ 26,250 98,764
That's what a high miler just did at the sale in PA
They say with 265,000 miles it's worth $27K or so!
As far as the Mountaineer... Here's 2 in PA recently:
01/22/2003BUTLER$ 4,950 109,00
02/06/2003BUTLER$ 4,950 115,538
And the Windy City..
02/13/2003CHICAGO$ 4,700 103,103
And Kansas City...
01/29/2003KC$ 4,600 105,803
etc... KBB and Edmunds get notoriously inaccurate on high-milers I;m afraid.
Bill
No paintwork, not dinged up, nonsmoker.. just in the wrapper, then $5K is a joke. $7K is light, But close.
I think this is a $7500-8K car myself if it is an LS (LSE?) and a Baby doll to the right buyer.

I presume these are auction prices?
Regardless, I now consider myself better educated about high mileage used car values. I think it's really unfortunate that Edmunds (and others) set unrealistic expectations for people trading in cars. If I were a car dealer, I'd want to give the public access to Galves or even raw data from auto auctions.
Thanks for the data points.
NADA, KBB, all of them don't hit a car like a car should be hit on miles - then again, a 120,000 mile Honda Accord could get sold retail at the dealership I worked at in Medford, OR - in 1999, we sold a 279,000 mile Accord - of course, it was perfect, bought there, serviced there, all the records, old lady owned it, etc.
What most people don't realize is once you take a vehicle over 100K (even 80K in most places), it loses most or all of its retail appeal. Since a vehicle wouldn't getting retailed, book allowances are pretty much worthless and the value is then just what someone will pay for it.
Either trade before 80K, or don't get mad because no one wants to pony up for book value on your ride!

2017 Accord Sport CVT Mod Steel Metallic
Figure they have $175 or so in sell fees, $40 to ship it to the sale.. $175 (From the sounds of it) to detail it all up...
I'd hit your truck around $4K myself, I like it a bit less than Terry does based on your description. This is why I don't ever use the online guides.. Im more worried about what the market is actually up to myself. Sorry to be the bearer and all...
Bill
I'd ask $2,300 or so.. It's probably worth, real transaction money, $1500-1700.
Hope this helps!

Your another one that needs to get a g/f close to home .. I doubt, it would even break $10 on a trade -- So, if you take a trip down Retail Rd, a super detail, deep in rubber, service is 100%, then $12,5 in the paper and the first Real buyer at $11/$12, then you should make them an owner .. lot's of SS competition out there, and you have miles and lot's of them.
Terry.
95 BMW 318ti - Black basic 5-speed (no options), after market sunroof (no leaks), cloth interior, a.m. alarm system and stereo (cassette, 8 speaker +sub, 10-disc -good quality), smoked in, but doesn't stink, few dings, few rock chips, one decent scratch along back trunk (7"), steel wheels, 74k miles - runs very strong
Online market shows $6-7 trade in (no account of a.m.) and up to $9.2 dealer retail.
What should I expect?
the ride I am considering: 02 Subaru Impreza Wagon TS - never titled, 84 miles, blue, auto, no real add-ons (arm rest and tail pipe cover is all). MSRP sticker shows $19,127 with dest.
03 Imprezas are $500 incentive, what would a left over 02 fetch? Also, dealer has four on lot, all about even for options, all auto, four different colors...does this smell like they bought other dealer's leftover 02 inventory?
What is fair price?
If it's deep in rubber and needs -0- for service, you are looking in and around the $4,0's depending on the dealer ..
The 02 Sub is a leftover (rare I would think, where do you live.?) .. all things considered, the TS's are definitely holding their own, the ultra nice low milers are doing in the $14/$15 range at the block and that's strong, so it's easy to figure the dealers are asking waaay into the $17's on the retail side.
I'm sure the dealer want's to say bye bye to that pup .. take invoice, then subtract any and all rebates and incentives .. might even throw a few more bucks in the trade to end this scary scenario ..
Thanks for stopping by ...
Terry.

Thanks.
New car will be a 2003 Subaru WRX, which are selling below invoice.
I ended up trading the 98 Mountaineer with a gazillion miles on it for $4750 and paid dealer invoice for another one. The $2500 rebate and $750 loyalty rebate eased the pain. Everybody is happy.
(2) Color inside and out
(3) Any recent service or repairs like tires or brakes or similar?
"Great condition" means perfect paint with no dings or scratches, truck's never been used for towing or hauling, bed and interior are in showroom condition, tires are like new. All this true?
Help the guys help you.
Last night I hit one of Pennsylvania's infamous potholes...when I took it the Honda dealer today, he told me that the suspension is fine, but the passenger-side front wheel is bent. He quoted me a replacement price of $409.
My question is this: should I let the wheel on the car and tell the dealer about it when I trade, or have it replaced before trading it in? Will a mildly bent wheel lower the trade-in price dramatically?
In all likelihood, I'll be buying from the dealer who has been servicing the car since I bought it new (the same dealer who told me that the wheel is bent, but that the suspension is fine). This dealer has all of the car's service records. Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you.
Best thing is to call Harry's U-Pull-It in Hazelton or go on www.car-parts.com and look for a used replacement wheel - should cost less than $100 at car-parts, less than $50 at Harry's.
Let me know if you have trouble finding one and I'll help you look locally -
--- Michigan
(2) Color inside and out
--- Patriot blue, grey cloth.
(3) Any recent service or repairs like tires or brakes or similar?
--- Oil, plugs, filter, and minor stuff like that. Brakes and tires are fine.
"Great condition" means perfect paint with no dings or scratches, truck's never been used for towing or hauling, bed and interior are in showroom condition, tires are like new. All this true?
--- I am not privy to the exact terminology, but I would suspect "perfect" or "excellent" condition would more accurately describe the condition you reference above. Is it showroom quality? No. It's two years old and has 30,000 miles. It needs a new rear bumper because of a very low impact parking-lot-esque type accident (which will be taken care of), but other than that it is "great". It's been used to tow a single relatively light jet-ski about 10 times.
Compared to a brand new show room vehicle, I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10. Compared to another 2001 with 30,000 miles, I'd give it a 9.9 out of 10... unless there are others out there garage keeping their ram, keeping it out of rain and snow, and rubbing it with a diaper daily... I'd say that mine is probably as good as it's going to get.
Personally, however, up here in the frozen tundra outside of Chicago where we are not allergic to Detroit sedans, I could pick up any number of 95 Taurus similarly equipped with 70-75k miles for $3-3,300. There are just tons of them here.
I would be surprised that if there is a lot of interest, although I might be wrong.
I was looking at a Chevy Avalanche. If the Blazer lost that much value then maybe I don't want another Chevy.
Is $5,000 about what I can expect? Thanks.
Might see $12K if it's really nice and bumper is undented. But I would Defer to Terry for a more accurate ##..
