And ... it is a first year car, Motor Trend "car of the year" and a factory order = July delivery (that's Oct/nov in dealer talk). They're in demand NOW, but what about in 3-4 years??
Mini-cooper was the same, but settling some. Likewise w/ PT Cruiser for about 15 minutes ... now they're $1K over invoice.
Miata redesign hit the dealers in 1999 ... I couldn't TEST DRIVE one! They said: "Maybe** we can get the manager to let you drive in the lot AFTER you sign a contract!" Crazy stuff!
I remember too that Accura did a big price DROP on the TL around 2000, and people with late model trades took a big beating on resale.
I'm not so sure first year resale on something hot is a good predicter, but it's can and does happen.
Although ... there are people with $$ to burn that just always want to have a new car and a good warranty. Especially among older people who don't drive much, and remember the days when 4 year old cars were ready for the junk yard.
Or could be from an Estate sale .... (something like that would stay in my family).
Truck should be worth $18,000 to maybe a bit more. Nice truck, but I dont think the color is helping much. If it was that Gold.. ro Silver.. or White.. would help a tad.
If you are not getting anywhere, shoot me an e-mail, I know the guys at Bill Ray Nissan in Longwood and they do step up on late-model, low-mile Nissans if they need em.
I can give you the name of a guy there.
There used to be one or two in Anchorage (and a Bentley or two) - I think Fred the Bailbondsman had one. Never quite fit in with the ambiance to me.

As for the Rolls Royce, it had California plates on it, so was definatly not from around these parts.
I'm just glad the roads are clearing up, at least we can drive our Escort more than 10 miles. Well, I suppose if I put new tires on it I'd be ok too. Nah, too cheap for that!
I have 1996 Honda Accord LX (standard, 4cyl, non-vtech engine) with 140K Miles on it. It served me well without ANY problem so far. However, it is getting about time that I think I should trade it in when I can fetch something for this car.
The car DOES have couple of defects, this winter (I live in North East, Philly area) while turning I must have hit a hardened snow bank and kinda clipped my lower right side bumper and cracked it. Also, I think I need to change the muffler by the sound of it.
According to the Edmunds Trade in value of this car: $2500 (rough condition)
Now, There was $1760 condition adjustment. I was hoping to get about $3000 for it..
First of all, is $2500 trade in realistic? Too low? Too high?
Do you guys think it would be worth my time and money to fix those defects before trading in the car? (otherwise, mechanically, it is in good shape..) How much would it cost to change muffler and maybe tubing (up to catalytic conv.)? If it would be worth it, should I try to fix bumper or muffler? Maybe both?
Thanks a lot.
4 door, PW/PL/PMirror.. AC still working fine.
Had been in a minor accident, Hood and one of the head light was changed (it was a CRV, I didn't know they were that high off the ground.. CRV had 1 bolt on the bumper gotten loose which the dealer screwed it in tightly for no charge.. I know this cause it was my co-worker, funny that I ran into her about 40 miles from the work place..) when the car had about 60K (long time ago... )
Nothing mechanical had to be done due to the accident..
The additional issues of the exhaust and tune up guarantee its place in the market. I'm near Philly, too, by the way.

Wow, a fellow Orlando resident!
I didn't think the color would be a factor. How does it affect the value of the truck?
I was offered $17,700 as a trade-in value for it, how much more should I be able to get? I could go to Carmax as they offered me $19,200 back in December but with their 'buy' fee and state taxes, it would probably end up to be awash and just more hassle.
If I sold it privately, what should be my sell price and offer price?
Thanks for your help.
I have been trying to sell it privately for $7,450. I was told that it was a fair price but I have not received any serious offers in the last two months. Is my price out of line and what could I expect to get in a trade? I live in the Los Angeles area and the van is garaged most of the time.
Magnum V8, automatic, 4x4, extended cab, A/C (works great), cruise control (works great), ABS, AM/FM/CD removable, sliding rear window, bedliner, two-tone light blue/silver over dark blue, intermittent wipers, split folding front seat, tilt steering wheel, jump seats, rear step bumper, ~101K miles, runs great. A little to a fair amount of rust, but nothing structural (that I can see, at least!)--not too much. Interior is appropriate for its age--driver's seat vinyl is cracked on the side (only visible with door open) and the steering wheel cover is cracked.
Any ideas, both for private sale and for trade-in?
Thanks again!
This sounds like a real rat Im afraid... Beat up, megamiled, etc..
Also, in the northeast there's no market for beat up old Hondas... No exporters.. etc. I think it's a $1,000-1,500 piece myself. MAYBE $1500-1800.. but thats gotta be it. I bought a '96 LXA not TOO long ago for a friends daughter. 95K miles, Silver, Just MINT. I think I paid $4400 for it.
Bill
OK.. $17,700 is a bit light, $19,200 is stupid high, it is not worth that IMO as a trade, but.. heck, if you can GET it, take it.
Dunno their buy fee, but you will lose over $1K in tax advantage.. soo...
I would ASK $22,900/bo and I think you oughta pick up about $2500-3K on it. I.E. $21ish ought to make it go bye bye.
Yes, COlor does play a big part here. See, light metallics in this town sell, darker colors generally dont (Exceptions exist.. I LOVE Sapphire Blue and Carnival Red Jaguars) What are you looking at BTW?
Bill
11xK miles? OUCH! I'm thinkign this is a "Quarter Piece" ($2500) to maybe "Three bucks" ($3K) but then you live in Alaska and you have reported on some insanity before...
Bill
Shoot.. I figure that thing oughta be worth a nickel on trade ($5K) easily.. Hmm.. I think your price is fair, How does the ad read? Where is it advertised?
I would write it like this:
1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager Rallye 7-Passenger, Only 73K miles, CD, Alloys, Fog Lights, 3.3V6, New Transmission with warranty, Brakes Batt and Alternator. Well maintained, clean in and out, Nonsmoker, recipts, private owner.. $7250/BO Cash talks
And expect to see $6500 out of it I think.
Bill
Hmm... It's old and rusty. Maybe 800-$1K as a trade I think.
How about advertising it for $2750/bo and grab $2K or better? Or throw it on eBay with a $2200 reserve?
Bill
I'm sitting in my home office located in Waterford Lakes as I type. I was anxiously awaiting for your response, the suspense was killing me. Dr. Philips, nice area. Isn't Emeril's new restaurant located there? Didn't a new Japanese restaurant open there too? I think it's called Amura. I have not been around the Dr. Philips area in a while. It's making me hungry, though
What are you looking at BTW?
I'm looking at an Infiniti FX35 AWD or an Acura MDX Premium. And I'm gonna try to get a light metallic color this time around, per your comments.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
Havent been to the new places yet.. but there is a GREAT new Middle Easter place called Cedars at Doc Phillips Blvd and Sand Lake rd that I like.
FX45? Sweet ride.. I think it looks amazing! Dunno what deals on em are like.
MDX? There's a Place on OBT.. but you should really go to the boys up in Seminole County...
Looked at a Murano yet? Supposedly same as a FX45 mechanically and the magazines love em. Also, new RX330 is out very soon, but you want to go to Melbourne to get one, trust me.
Bill
Thanks for the help earlier! Just wanted to give you the update. Hindsight is 20/20 and I wish I had leased this car instead of purchasing not knowing the rapid rate of depreciation on this car. Oh well lesson learned!
Lourdes :-)
I pegged it around $3k to $4k, its a nice car, not perfect, but nice. Get this, I found out today they still owe $7500 on it......YEOWCH!!! When I told them what I felt it was worth and then showed them what likely the dealer was going to do (roll the neg), they have decided to keep the car. Smart in my opinion, the thing has only cost them $700 in repairs the entire time they've owned it (5 years, 117k).
...I'm thinking, if someone wants a real deal on an ok car, anything from the General with the 3.8 has got to be the ticket. Esp. a '98, cuz:
- They're cheap (see Bill's valuation above), esp. miley ones
- They're reliable -- will nickel&dime somewhat, but engine/tranny should be good for 150++. GM air conditioners are also OK, I think. Unlike the, uh, Taurus or Intrepid -- nicer cars, but $$$ to keep running.
- 1998 is two years into OBD-II, so you get all the diagnostics that help your mechanic figure out what the heck is wrong, and the technology had largely stabilized... '96 anythings scare me, personally.
- They are all over the place.
- And they are pretty decent cars, all things considered.

(who didn't want a Buick, but thought about it for awhile).
Porsche '02 911 Cabriolet: 6 spd., seal gray, 6.5k Perfect! $7,490 608-240-xxxx
It was really early when I read the paper, and I planned on calling, but I got busy & didn't. I'm sure the ad was supposed to read "$74,900", but who knows... Might have been like that old divorce urban legend. "Honey, I'm leaving you. Sell my Porsche and send me the money!" I bet their phone was ringing off the hook all day!

He said we are buying a 2004 VW Jetta Wagon GLS TDI, 5-speed, I did get to choose options, so will go with the stability control, monsoon system, leather, and of course the cold weather package. I want to stick with my traditional colors when it comes to Jettas (have owned 2) which is Tornado Red/Black. He also said I have to keep the car for a looonnnnnggggg time. Sheesh, I'm such an abused wife.....lol. *pout* I wanted a 1.8T.
My employer gets deals on Nissan/Infiniti vehicles. I will be paying below invoice on the FX, should I decide to buy it.
Based on my experience, the Acura guys on OBT are better to deal with than the Seminole County folks. Those Seminole guys put unwanted accessories on the MDXs and of course, charges the buyer for it. The OBT folks doesn't follow this practice and are pretty straightforward.
I looked at Murano also and it does seem that the FX and the Murano are very similar but they are not. The Murano is based on the Altima platform which has a front-wheel bias while the FX is based on the 350Z platform which has a rear-wheel bias. It's a blast to drive with utility (albeit a small cargo space) to boot.
I might look at the RX330 once it comes out but I'll take your advice if I like it too much. I might even ask for contacts
Heating oil is $1.55 per gallon here, that's a killer, almost as much as diesel fuel at the gas station!
Actually, I believe taxes are the biggest chunk of the price. That's why NY is significantly higher than NJ. Supposedly the actual raw material price is not a big percentage of what you pay at the pump. Refining and taxes are relatively constant.
And, ever notice how prices go up quick at the mere hint of trouble with supplies, but take much longer to come down when the trouble is over?
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Still looking, and now my search has advanced to new/slightly used models. Here are the choices, and pls let me know what I should expect to pay:
Located in So Cal:
2003 Corolla LE, 10K miles, white, auto, CD, pw, pd, pl, cc, etc... Asking $14,9 (dealer)
2003 Matrix XR, fwd, silver, loaded, moonroof, CD, alloys, 7800miles. Asking $17K (private seller)
And which, in your opinion, is the better choice ? (since both are built on same platform)... Car is for the wife (she prefers Matrix, I prefer Corolla)
Thanks a lot and really looking forward to your numbers.
Interior is also good - no stains, rips, or tears.
Mechanical - puffs a bit of blue smoke at starting, but runs great on 91 octane, knocks like hell on 87oct. Just passed smog with flying colors. I suspect I have a little internal engine wear. There is also a bit of leakage of oil at the valve guide, but none falls.
I have records since I bought it in '95.
As a side note this car has amazing reliability / durability. Never had to do brakes, nor alignment, nothing. Tires wear evenly.
I had an attempt to fix the valve leak last year and that has been it for repairs in 7 years. Still feels tight and rides smooth as butter. Why do I want to sell anyhow? Oh yeah, my fiance cant drive a stick.
Please advise as to
realistic number for trade in (i presume instant auction)
what I could hope for in private party
I live in San Jose, Calif.
Taurus SES Sedan 4D - V6 3.0 Liter, Automatic, Front Wheel Drive, Air Conditioning, Power Steering, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Tilt Wheel, Cruise Control, AM/FM Stereo, Single Compact Disc, Dual Front Air Bags, ABS (4-Wheel), Power Seat, Alloys
Presuming about 15-20K miles, what does the dealer pay at auction for one of these? How low can I get him to go to sell one to me? Any advice on this purchase?
Thanks for the help.
Terry.
