...there is no "tax advantage" to trading vs selling. Each transaction, including the new car sale, is treated as a standalone deal. There are no sales tax reductions on trade values.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
many times that sways a person towards trading.

For instance, if a person is selling a car and gets a $10,000 offer, and the dealer offers the same $10,000, in every state I've been in (besides CA and those without sales tax), the owner would save $500-800, depending on the tax rate, by trading.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
add MI to your list. Sales tax is paid on the value of the car, not the trade difference...

And darn it, cars have wheels, drive it North or West...I don't think that the Impala resale is $3k different in SoCal.. and with low miles, leather, the legendary 3800 "series II" and all that jazz, I can't believe it isn't worth $9 or $10 cash value... but then, I'm not a car dealer... I just like to watch...

Ya didn't smoke in this thing, didja...???

Why not just make the point moot and buy a car (or boat, motorcycle, plane) in South Carolina? They have the wonderfully enlightened policy of having a $300 cap on sales tax for all those types of vehicles. Needless to say, people from here in NC drive there all the time to save $1000 or more on tax.

FWIW - A dealer who "only buys the best from auctions". Had a 2001 BMW 330 Coupe (loaded) listed to go at BMW finance auction. He offered to get it and sell to me for $30500 - @ 28K miles. I was about ready to go and then started thinking that's way too high. He'd probaly also make $2K on my trade.

He said a 2001 325 would set me back $25500

Looking at online prices and the soft market I took a pass. Think I'll stick with my 1997 a while until the trade market gets better or the dealers start selling their used at the soft prices they say my trade is worth. $11-12K for a 1997 BMW Coupe

I'm real interested in what the guys here say on your post.

    Terry -

Now that I know what the Camaro is worth... What can I expect to pay (retail) for a nice, low mile Corvette: 2002, auto, transparent roof, 1SC pkg, chrome wheels. Miles between 9k and 15k.

Looking in metro NYC and NJ. Thanks.

1997 Chevy Venture, standard length, dark gray, 3 row seats, base package, crank windows, cruise,ac,good rubber,80k, looks good, no dings, good windshield, in New Orleans.

I think I got everything, please don't make me go to my room. Thanks in advance.

CRANK windows? You sure? That puppy must have been someone's special order (yours?).

Terry's gonna want to know how many doors, particularly. on the driver side. You can tell him from your room...

What this puppy's worth is gonna be anybody's guess; depends on whether there's another person on the planet who'd be interested.

Get a professional opinion, but maybe $3 real money (with 3 doors); $4-4,5 on a private sale.

Waiting to be corrected, I remain

Well, there are a several of those available as GM certified used cars with under 20K AND automatic for under $10,000.

Make it a 5 speed, and it is an $8500-$9000 car at RETAIL. Trade in side is going to vary a lot depending on the dealer, his ability to move a car like that, and the current fuel prices and market demand. $5000 low side to just under $8000 high side.

If your looking for a 330i sedan I saw one on Ebay w/ buy it now for $28.5. I think it had 16k miles and prem. pkg and hk stereo and steptronic. I bid up to $26.5, but wasn't that interested since it wasn't manual.

I however did try to talk this guy down on the 2002 325i and he only came down a little to $25k. It looks like that will be the final price. What do you guys think? I thought it was fair. $24k would have been a great deal, but I think BMW's are still selling in this soft market.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
It is a $5900 ASKING price at a dealer vehicle IF it passes all inspections and safety checks. Will probably retail out around $4900. Given the age the dealer will want about $1000 less then that if they are going to retail it out. Odds are they will probably look at having to wholesale it off, $2500 to $3000 at auction in average used condition. FYI the ones with PW, PL, plus options are having asking prices between $6,900 and $8,495 around here, Midwest.

There are a BUNCH of 97-98 vintage minivans available on the market with that kind of mileage.

I'm very curious to see what the pro's have to say about the Maxima. I'm just starting to shop for that same car, and oddly enough in the same town. Not many used ones around. I'm also considering a new Accord 6 cylinder, or the Mazda 6. Decisions, decisions...

Terry and crew must be at an auction or something. I haven't seen any responses all day. Hopefully I can get them before Friday.

    Thanks for the response, Terry.

Any comments on my question about decreased Camry reliability? I ask here because on another
posting you mentioned that Hyundais are not really the equal in reliability of Honda, no matter what Consumer Reports thinks.

    .... Morning.!

Low miles are wonderful.! But does it look, feel, drive like a low miler.? has it been down door ding hiway, are the tires deep, does it stand tall ..? -- If so, then it's looking at the high $5's, low low $6's on a trade, if it needs a this and a that, start deducting .. down Retail Rd, $8,495 is a smart asking price and let the first cash buyer with a American Flag take it proudly home for $7,5/$8,0 ..

.... Every manufacturer that builds large commoditys of anything will see some reliability questions .. as a rule, it's not the factory, it's the sub-contractors that sell the .11 ct door lock, or the radiator hose for $1.23, or a cheap wiper motor that takes 6/15/20 months to fail .. but Yota's are good vehicles and I'm sure they are on top of everything (I hope :) .)-- also, don't let CR's make up your mind on everything, they have been giving the new Hyundai's accolades .. Duh.! - who rights that stuff.? .l.o.l..

Thanks for the info on the Venture. Geeez Mathias lighten up I wasn't asking you to BUY the van. Don't ask me about the crank windows, I bought it used. I'm not upset with the value it's not like my best friend died. I had a friend pick that up at auction for me. It's given me 32k trouble-free miles in 20 mos. I paid 6k.
If I retailed it myself and only got 3,500 it still wouldn't be that great of a loss. Thanks guys for the info. Just kidding Mathias thanks for your help.

I'm looking to trade in my silver 2001 bmw 330cic convertible. it has 17600 miles and is in great condition. i was looking at a certified 2002 bmw 525 w/ 9600 miles and premium package. what would a fair price be for my car and also a fair price to pay for the 525? the dealer wanted to do an even trade, but i think my car is worth more. any help would be much appreciated. thanks.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
I don't think Mathias was hacking on you, and I have no problem with crank windows (they're on two of my three cars), but it gives a prospective buyer something to whine about and try to mess with you on price.

    "Ohh - crank windows - I'll buy it you'll take $500 off".

"How about you'll BUY and you'll LIKE it, MISTER!"
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
I like crank windows... at least I can close them in the summer when it starts to rain and I don't have the keys handy.
But in a family vehicle, they really cut down on the target market.

The first two vehicles I bought new had no pwr/anything + manual transmisson, and I had no trouble selling them for a good price.

    dhoff --

As of a few years ago anyway, Nissan built only 3% of Maximas with manual trannys, so it's not surprising that they're much scarcer on the used market than the autos. I tend to believe the scarcity factor outweighs the narrower target market, leading to stronger resale values relative to the automatics. Terry and the other pros can correct me if I'm wrong in this speculation...

2000 Toyota Avalon XLS - 38K miles, beige color, leather, premium pkg, all power equip, moonroof, dual pwr seats, bun warmers, etc...

I need to sell my car in the next week or so. What do you think?

1994 Ford Escort LX/Sport, caymen green/gray, 2 dr, 5-speed, no stereo, sunroof, alloy wheels, no pwr stuff (well, pwr mirrors, but the switch doesn't work), 105k, runs excellent. Its not the prettiest car in the world, there honestly isn't a body panel without some sort of ding or dent. The interior is in fairly good shape and it drives really well. Its sneakers have a good amount of tread, the front are new and the rear 50%. The glass is all good in the car and other than cosmetic stuff, its a great car.

I'm thinking $1250 obo and take 900/1,000 and kick it down the road. Am I in the ball park?

We have our new car all picked out so little car needs to get on down the road unfortunatly. Can't afford to insure 3 vehicles.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
let me say this first, I am in the same boat you are, I own a '97 Maxima 5 speed. the Max is a completely different car manual vs auto.... once you drive the manual, the auto just doesnt feel the same, does it?

Unfortunately, I think Terry is going to respectfully disagree with you about values of manuals vs autos. Lets face it, the Max is a "sporty" 4 door family sedan. Most buyers will want the auto, and you will definately see a lower "trade-in" value with the manual tranny. But, I also agree that they are scarce, and if the wind is blowing justtttt right and the sun is at the right longitude, you'll find someone that is looking for the manual and you'll see some strong $$$ for it.

I am curious as to the value of the '02/'03's, as I think they are still one of the best bang's for the buck out there. My guess is he hits your max at roughly $17,5.

    thanks.

I hope you can help me with this one. I have an 02 Ford Escape "Midnight Edition Package" with only 6500 miles on it. Used Escapes seem to be plentiful (especially from Hertz auto sales) but mine was limited to only 5000 produced. Every dealer I go to to just get a trade-in value on it only give me a quote of around 15-16k. The sticker on this car was 28k and the invoice was 25k. The car has no flaws and is in near showroom condition. When I bring up that this is different from a regular Escape it does not seem to even matter. I really want to get a new 4Runner but do not want to take a hit this large. Am I being low balled from the dealers or is this a "Real-World" value? Thanks for any help...
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
while the "Midnight Edition" may be a cool package, it's not significant enough to earn a model or trim level upgrade, thereby bring you any more money.

$15-16K is auction money on these.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
Terry, can you quickly hit this one for a friend...

25,xxx miles. 4x4, bun warmers, slider. i believe color is called black cherry (basically a maroon) with black guts. good shape, no real noticeable wear and tear. miles are a little on the high side.

    thanks.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
I'd say that pup would do $22.5 - $23.0 thru the lanes. AWD and Black Cherry is a good combo up north but not so good down south. So location will sway these numbers a bit.

My guess is he'll be lowballed on it. Infiniti is trying to blow these out and there are incentiveson them to help. Its easy to get one at invoice or lower. Too bad cause IMO its the best mid sized "real" SUV out there; not a big minivan like a Pilot or RX300.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
resides in TN, so its not the best color combo for the southern summer.

    And where do you live?
Here in the Midwest a car like that would go for $200 at either the auction (if it would even sell) or the junk yard (because it could be driven to the yard).

If it had 80K miles I would say ask $995 and take the first $700 in the next week or two.

Over 100K and you need to sell it in a week or two. You can try an asking price of $995 and see how many calls you get.

If you really want to move it in only a week or two: 1994 Ford Escort, runs good, good tires, $595, call XXX-XXXX.
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Well, I think you're in the ballpark. Your 330Cic would sell for about $36k at auction and the 525i would do $33-34k if its an auto. We're coming up to "I got my tax return and I want a convertible" time of year so I think you have some leverage. Depends on if they have any 3-series cabrios on the lot and how long the 5er has been there. Also consider that (I think) you get a CPO warranty on the 5er so that add about $1000 or so to the asking price. So I think you're within $1000-2000 from making a deal. I say detail the cabrio, put the top down, drive it to the BMW store and park it out front. The SM will prolly say to hisself, "I need that car on my lot" and make a deal happen. Worth a try....

..... Hi Nicole .. I remember this vehicle from before. Contrary to what someone else had posted, these are still pulling some $$ ..

You need to get to another dealer, pronto.! .. unless this pup is smacked up, tires are burned off, the interior looks like a Iraqi tank, $7,000.? I don't think so, not even close .. it's gotta be worth all of $10, the miles are right - and IF, it's a nice one, clean, knee deep, shows like an 02, then it could see an easy $11 and change .. there's no such thing as a $7 grand LS unless it's been hit by shell from A1 Abrams tank ... I might add, that some of the highest prices are in S. Cal, a CLEAN 21k Impala LS, loaded up, could very easily do towards the $12's especially at the LA/Riverside auctions.

    .... Is it a Base ..? SLE ...? SLT ...?

I'm going to give ya a pass tonight, it's late and this friggin' computer is working soooo slow I want to throw it out the window - (I musta forgot to pay my DSL bill) .. Let's say it's a SLE, clean, no rust, interior is fair, deep in rubber, the miles are high, but it's a big block and a 3/4 ton, and if the 4x4 has no click clicks then it has to be worth the ultra high $5's, low $6's on a trade ... this is definitely a Retail Rd vehicle .. a great detail, service records on the front seat, $9,900 in the paper and $8/$9,5 sends it down the hiway ..

                Good luck ....

Sold the car today for $900 to a dealer. It really wasn't that bad, I just am critical of it. Worst thing about it was it needed its new grille put in and it could use a front fender. Car ran perfect, definatly not ready for the junkyard. They will put a new fender on it, put a stereo in it, then stick it on the lot for $1995 or more. Know what? It'll be gone in a week, no doubt about it. This is Alaska after all.....home of the crazy car prices.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
... You made a great deal on it when you bought it, so $1,5 sounds right .. see what happens .. it should go fast.

              Good luck ..

never mind, you gave it away to the dealer - now, there's $600 YOU could have had .. Miss Big Bucks ;-))

Something was going down with the oil pump in the last couple days, I wasn't comfortable selling it to someone I knew. It was losing power and flashing the oil light. Not sure what was up, but I felt it was better to cut my losses and give it away.

Do I have to go to my room now?

BTW, we are looking at this......

2000 Grand Caravan Sport, AWD, 28k, captains chairs, loaded up, red/gray, good tires, alloys, overhead console. Its a little dirty on the inside, but drives really nice. $16,860 is the asking price.....I think its great......if you live in Bahgdad. What do you think? Also, a 2000 Windstar LX, 31k, dual sliders, 3.8L V-6, burgandy (I call it horse poop color)/gray, good tires. $11,100 is the asking on this one.

..... So we have a 02 Corolla, Oooop's I mean a 02 Prizm with 20k and a power package .. nice little vehicles, this one has a handshaker and the miles are a little stiff ..

On a trade, in and around the $6's .. down Retail Rd, $8,900 in the paper (after a great detail) .. and let it go for $7,5/$8,5 .. the handshaker and the miles might hold this one back, so be reasonable if you sell it yourself.

              Let me know ....

**It was losing power and flashing the oil light**

You did the right thing .. if the friggin' thing would have blown in a month or less you would have seeing this guy at the local 7-11 everyday -- is there a local 7-11 in Alaska.? :)

$16,900 ..? - Welcome to the Saddam Hussien Airport .. Oooop's no more.! welcome to the Baghdad international Airport - thanks to the courtesy of the bold, brave USA GI's.! God Bless them ...!

The Caravan is the way to go, but not at the "Pluto prices" of $16,900 .. they are doing the ultra high $11's, low $12's at the block in the NW, so figure a this, figure a that then they "might" have $13 in it, $14,5ish should be just about all of it ...

                I hope this helps ....

    ..... An 88 Huh ..? 112k ... 5 speed and no tops right ..?

If it's all there, not a bunch of re-paint and bondo, runs like a Seiko - then trade side you "might" be seeing $1,000/$1,500 depending on the dealer .. most won't know what one of these might be worth .. a little trip down Retail Rd, cleaned up, great pics, a great history, you could be seeing $3,9+ .. You can check with "Zues" on these, I think he races them or uses them for door stops, I'm not sure.

Mathias is dead on, high $2's, low low low $3's, maybe .. miles are stiff for a domestic, gheeez no power stuff, tough sale and all the Competitation will have the good stuff.

Down Retail Rd, $4,900 in the paper and the 1st cash buyer takes it home for $3,9/$4,500 -- kinda remember, familys won't buy it and Co's don't like em' ..

The only thing that's holding this one back, is the meat clever, it has all the stuff and low miles .. could see the mid $16's on a trade ... nice vehicles and a Great Value on the pre-owned side ..

Hi. I am interested in trading my 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe. I am in the SouthEast part of the Country.

    GL Model
    gold exterior
    4 cyl
    cloth seats
    31,000 miles
    Auto
    Power Windows, Locks
    Luggage Rack
    Tinted Glass
    AM/FM CD

    clean, non-smoking, original owner

I am curious to know what I can expect to get for this car. Thanks!
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
I thought the price on the Caravan was super high too. The Windstar is an ex-rental and a moot point now, I want a Grand Caravan or a TC.

Saw this other one and am still thinking the price is high. 2002 TC LX AWD, 5551 miles, loaded up with the goodies, white/gray. Asking $20,995.

The Grand Caravan Sport is sitting at Park & Sell, so it belongs to its owner still. They were asking $18,360 for it. Its a nice van, low miles, but dang, looked like a grease monkey got turned loose in there. They have it at $16,860 and don't negotiate. Ah well, there's plenty more to be found, I have about 6 weeks to play with.

Ugh, we are a one car family again, not fun.
