Yes I 'knew' I was letting a good deal go, but the wife won't hear it. GGgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! Frustrating trying to get the wife to understand ! Grrrrrrrrrrr..... Well got that off my chest.

I will go back to the dealer Monday and try to get the car. Trouble is the sales guy said the $14,7 price was only good for Sunday, otherwise it goes back to the asking sticker on the car which is 14,985. Can the dealer go back on the agreed price if I come back 1-day later ? Just wondering tho'

I suppose the worst I could do is fork over another $300 to make the difference b/w Sunday and Monday price. Kinda suck to have to do that tho'. Will see how it goes Monday, assuming the car is still there.

Will update after the deal is done.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
at $14985 though, I wouldn't sweat the $300 enough to lose the deal.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    - What he said. Run the Carfax, then grab it.
    - "Can they do that" (raise price again $300): Sure they can. It's their car, they can do anything they like. I'd try for the Sun price again, or split the difference.... but really, price should still be good. No manuf. incentives on used...
    - It is enirely up to you,if and how you rub it in to the Mrs. But it might be a good idea to come out of this the designated car decision maker...

Having lit the fuse, I remain,

.... You can be a Lion and you can be a Tiger .. but never be a Pig.

Mathias is dead on, If the -history- is fine, then even $1,000 wouldn't make a difference - If I, was to run that puppy through the Riverside auction this week, it probably would do the mid $14's .. you are in wholesale land, not La La land .. ;-)

Good luck and let it rock ...

Welllll..... how do I start this ?

Yes we did buy the Matrix. Will pick it up tonight. But that is the short part. Here is the long part. Ready ???

Got into the dealership at noon today (PDT). The salesguy talked to the head honcho manager, and comes back to me. Here goes our conversation:

Sales guy: "The boss will like us to have some fun selling you this car"

So I am curious what is up. I perked up my chin, wondering what he has up his sleeves...

Sales guy: "The boss says, why not flip a coin for the price. Your call."

Me: "What price are we talking about ?"

    Sales guy: "14,7 or 14,985."

Me: "Really ?" (by this time I am thinking, why the heck ??)

I said OK. But on my condition. Best 2-of-3 coin flips decides the price.

So the manager walks in with a quarter. He does three flips, I called, and guess what. I LOST 2-of-3. So I ended up paying 14,985. My OTD was $16,339.

That was a "flip" ! Literally.... Couldn't believe my eyes it was happening. A first for me. Coin flip deciding price of a car. The manager said either way I win, cos they are not making anything on the sale price. I accepted the offer because of all you good people told me it was a good buy at 14,9. I hope so. I think so. I know so ????

Anyway, the car was a trade-in for an '03 325i. I checked carfax. It was squeaky clean. Everything is as it should be. It had all the mats/cargo cover, including cargo net and all the accesories. No dents, bruises, kisses, or invasion of freedom fries. Two sets of keys, 2 fobs (with alarm) and valet key. At 14,985, it is a sweet deal. I cannot wait to pick the car up tonight.

This is car numero 3. Our other two are a '99 LS and an '01 Sequoia. My wife and I will have trouble deciding which car to drive to work, cos I will much prefer the Matrix than my LS for everyday work car, but I know the spouse already is thinking the Matrix is hers in place of the Seq for daily work commute.

Ahh.... America the beautiful. This is a wonderful country of ours, to have such a mundane problem of car choice.... I love the USA.

    Sorry for the long post.

Does anyone even trade these in anymore?
Anyway, I've got a Shadow that's been a great car for the last 11 years but I think it is time to trade up. I know the trade in value can't be much but here goes:
    1992 Dodge Shadow ES Convertible
    77,000 miles
    V-6, 5-speed
    Most power options, CD changer
Black paint, and in very good shape.
Never been hit or damaged; I've even replaced that oft-forgotten timing belt. It's been smoked in but putting that top down kept the smell from getting too embedded. Any thoughts on the value of this beast would be appreciated.

    Hi guys,
I'm wondering if you'll give me some idea about my trade-in potential:

2002 Accord V6-EX Coupe, 26.5k, Black/gray leather, rear spoiler, good condition, one door ding, a couple of bumper scuffs, some wear on the driver's side floormat, it's had all the scheduled maintenance, car's in the Boston area. I'm considering moving into an 01 or 02 S2000 (figured I'll lower my practicality for a boost in fun). Thanks!
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm...

I'd say throw it in the paper.. ask $2K or BO and it oughta sell if it's clean I think. Should see ya $1500 or so.. maybe a bit more. Cheap ragtops in clean shape with low miles? 1 Owner? Yeah that oughta sell.

    What say you T-Man?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    2002? 26,500 MILES?? YOWZA!

Well that's a hit Im afraid. And then it has bumps... Hmm...

    $14,500 to perhaps $15K.

  • texas100texas100 Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought of the paper because of the hassle but based on what you said it should be fairly painless. With a little care and a reasonable price, it could give someone a few years fun transportation (hopefully without them dragging it back to me demanding a refund). 'Preciate it.

You know what. If that car were detailed out, all maintenance up to date and a certified mechanical inspection, plus a good/like new rag top. The Auburn, IN Kruse Auction would be a good place to move it. Labor Day weekend....I have seen those bring over $6,000 at the classic car auction.

I would get the car maintenance up to date, give it a good detail. Then contact the people at www.allpar.com (Mopar gearhead web site) and associated web sites. That is a car that you will probably do better if you get the word out to people who go nuts over those cars.

FYI Geo Metro convertables in the spring bring $2,000 if they have under 100K and run good up here.

I would try a good detail and make sure all maintenance is documented. Have a mechanical inspection. Then advertise it at $3995. Put the ad like this:

One owner 92 Dodge Shadow Convertable. Super clean. Ready to drive. Mechanical inspection and maintenance up to date. A must see $3995. Cash talks.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, it's a lotta miles (bought it in Nov 01), 80 miles a day for my commute. I won't even tell you what my current lease buyout is - let's just say that my first car-buying experience has convinced me that, from now on, it's 1-2 year old cars for me. :)

Hey Terry, got a line on this camry...
Hoping you could give me some insight on pricing. It's one of those smaller used car only type dealers.

    Here's the details I have...
    Carfax certified
113k mi, dk green 4dr auto trans.
    Power windows, locks, steering, brakes
A/C, most of the standard stuff.
    No slider, no leather.

They asking 5850. Going to go look tomorrow and see whats up, hopefully you can respond before I make an offer if I like it.

    Thanks terry.

..... Dkuhajda has brought up some good points ..

Now, I don't know much about the Auburn spring fest .. but it's a V6 (Mitsu motor) it only has 70k, it's a convert and Spring has sprung -- you say it's in good shape, trade side maybe $500/$900 .. so with a Great detail, deep sneakers, a new timing belt and a great 5 liner Ad .. I'm thinkin' $3,900 down Retail Rd and let some nice bikini glad lady take it home for $2,5/$3,5 ..

              Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Ok we have a 96 LE, with 113k, it's no-sale green, we have a clean carfax, all the basic power stuff and everything works ..

I'm guessing here, but I have a feeling he probably got the vehicle via ABC Toyota/Honda on a trade (which is fine) .. probably paid $3,5/$4,0 for it, to put the deal together. So, a this and a that brings it to $4,0/$4,5ish, I would think they would cut it from the herd for $4,9/$5,5 ...

Ok, why is it that anything that says AWD automatically gives the dealer the right to send it into crazy price land.

Yesterday I looked at a nice and I mean nice, 1999 Chrysler T&C LXI, 54k, AWD, leather, captain's chairs, bun warmers, everything, it was red/gray, wasn't a mark on the van, it was so clean it still smelled new. Dealer's asking $16,900.

Only other one I saw that I liked was a 2000 Grand Caravan Sport, gray/gray, 60k, nice van, loaded up with all the right stuff, no leather, but quad captains and it was AWD. It was great except that someone tried to put an aftermarket center console and drilled holes all the way through the floor, you can see the ground. Um, no thanks. Dealer's asking $18,995. YEOWZA!!!

There are a couple others in Anchorage, but all are 2000 T&C's LXI, AWD, miles in the 50k range and priced around $19k.

I'm starting to think a new Kia Sedona is looking good.....just kidding.....but I may end up with a Honda Accord or something if I get fed up enough with the minivan search.

Jolie.....*muttering to herself about used car prices in mooseland*

.... You live in Moose land, they can ask anything they want .. but being the sharp, informed, ex Salesperson you are, you know there is 3 prices when selling a vehicle.

           1.) an asking price.

           2.) a liking price.

           3.) and a taking price.

I'm sure you can get into the taking price range .. :-)

I friend of mine is interested in a sky-blue 2000 Ford Taurus SE with 85K and ABS brakes. The body and interior are in decent shape but the windshield has two noticeable dings (1/4 of an inch). What would be a trade-in and a private party value for this car (NYC area)? Thanks in advance for any help. BTW what "commercial lease vehicle" really means. Should he stay away from such a vehicle?
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Yeah, I'm just grumbling I guess. Hubby doesn't want to spend that kind of money on a used van. He wants me to buy a brand new car.

My mom and I were out car shopping yesterday, she's a riot to take a long......got her going on the Jag X-type that was sitting in one show room.....heck, all we could afford was the hood ornamant.....lol.

I'm trying to sell my parents' '92 white ls400. can anyone help me with the pricing. It is in excellent shape. Outside paint and gloss is as good as my new camry. Interior is great too, has cd changer, leather, chrome wheels, premium sound, etc. And here is the BUT...

it has a lot of miles: 210K, but almost all of it is from freeway driving.
the passenger power windows are somewhat quircky (lexus said it would cost about $120 to fix)
and one speaker finally gave out.
I was looking to sell it myself and am targeting about $6300(edmunds says 6500 for PPV), but no one seems to be interested. is this too high?
    thanks.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
If you have any buy here pay here car lots see if they are interested and get cash dollar quotes for them to buy it. That will give you an idea what they can buy the car at auction in your area. Typical selling price is going to be about $1000 more than the auction price.

210K even on a Lexus makes it hard to sell. Most banks won't loan on a 200K, 12 year old car, even a Lexus. Those that will are in the teens on interest rate 18%.

If $6300 is not generating interest in your area, it probably is too high. Try pulling the ad for a week and then relist the car. Fix the little stuff, get a good detail. Advertise it like this:

92 Lexus LS400. Drive in luxury. Take it home for $5995. Cash talks. Call for details and to set up a time to test drive. ###-####

    85K Miles?

Your friend can go right to his bloody room! (Sorry, just got back from England)

There's loads of these out there.. I mean, you can pick em up with 40-50K miles at the auction for $5800-6300.. so I think $7500-$8K ought to get you one bought retail. So what's this car gonna do at the sale? $4500-4800. So $6K-6300ish should get it done retail. So what are ya saving for it having more miles on it than a 2000 Model Cessna?

"Commercial Lease Vehicle" means "Oogotz". It means it was leased.. Commercial is because it was titled in the leasing company's name.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well done. :)

Too bad about the coin toss, but ya still swiped it for cheap.

You can come out of your room now. I think we gotta let your wife stay in there until she pays ya back the $285 plus tax she owes you :D
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Umm..

Try more like $5K retail.. you can ask $6300.. but then I can ask $30,995 for a 1998 XJ8 as well.

Neither price is gonna get it done. This might be a good eBay car methinks..

    It's NOT a Buy-Here Pay-Here car at ALL!!!!

    Bill
  • jtbruinjtbruin Member Posts: 40
Thanks for the help and the advice. yeah, i think i might try to sell it for a little bit less, hopefully that'll do the trick. I just cleaned it myself, so it is just sitting in the garage, while my new camry is out in the cold. my parents' incentive for me to sell it soon!
    thanks guys!

btw: how does ebay work? sounds complicated and problematic....

jtbruin - I used eBay to sell my last car (1988 T-Bird with the V-8), and found it worked very well. Take some pics of the car with either a digital camera or a regular camera and get them scanned (Wal-Mart photo developing will put the pics online for a couple of bucks). When you list the car, you can put in a reserve price (price that bidder won't see below which you won't sell the car) and a Buy It Now price, which means just what it says: if someone pays that, the auction ends then and there. I found eBay useful for cars like mine, and perhaps yours, where there might be someone out there who's craving it and is willing to travel a bit to get it (guy drove out from Michigan to Boston to pick up mine, paid cash). Anyway, listing costs $40, and auctions typically run for 7 days. Overall, it might be worth a shot.

I have a friend who is looking to add to his MB stable - a car for his 17 year old son. He's found a '93 190E 2.6 [6 cyl] automatic with 93k miles. Apparently extraordinary cosmetics - good white paint, a couple small dings, clean wheels [a good sign with any MB], Michelins with about 10k left on them. I didn't ask about equipment details, because there weren't many options - I assume it has sunroof and leather.

It was auctioned and is at a local used car guy who likes these kinds of cars - asking price is $9900, which seems way too high, but I told him I'd ask you folks what the auctions out here in Calif are doing on a car like this.

He's in Lodi, CA - think SF Bay Area.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm dealing on a new Sub/YukonXL. I have an '01 Silverado 4wd LT with almost all available options. White with grey interior. 28000 miles, bought it new. Almost perfect, does have some light hail which it had when I bought it. Dealer wants to give me 19500 hard money for it on a trade. I think he's nuts. Am I wrong?

IMHO, you are better off trying private party on this one. Couple of reasons...

1> Car still under warranty 4/50
    2> 6spd MT
    3> Coupe

Other than that sounds decent, kinda high miler for under a year old. I would guesstimate that you could get 25/26 on a private party sale and probably 23/24 on a trade. (TMV on a new one is about 29k) Terry will probably be able to help ya out, but you gotta get more info in here bud.

Color, interior/exterior condition should help ya get a better "quote". good luck.

The usual standard equipment - leather, AC, Auto, dual moon roofs, All Weather Packager (Heated Seats, Outside Mirrors, and Windshield Wiper De-Icers), alloy wheels, and more. Lists for around 30K, can be had new for around 27K, and they are asking 24.8K for one with 9500 miles.

What do you think? (in northern nj - nyc metro area)

Thanks for the further advice on the Shadow conv. I'll try selling it myself instead on trading in. Good detail and new tires should set it straight. Right about that Mitsu V6, rroyce10. Heard too many bad stories about 4 cyl DC motors.

Lou: Buy a new one. Save $2,200 for 9,500 miles? Those are the first, original, new-car-smell, fully-covered-by-warranty,... miles.
It's important to me, right or wrong, to do the break-in myself, to know the car hasn't idled 20 minutes every morning in the cold, etc.

This reflects my personal hangups, not the cash value of the car you're looking at.

Drew: That 3.0 Mitsu V6 has a problem with oil burning. They run a loooong time, but when they get towards 150k, they start trailing blue smoke. What you do is run heavier-weight synthetic oil (20W50? -- I forget) and the problem is much reduced. Buddy of mine did this on a $1000 hooptie minivan some years back, worked great. Just in case your 92 is showing signs of it, even with the lower miles...

...... Good morning JD .. S.Cal is a funny market, actually all of the Left Coast is a funny market .. an ultra nice 9-5 V6 with 25k/35kish miles are doing "around" the high $14's to the high $15's all around the country .. Now, in S.Cal they can end up in the $16's ... it will depend on the miles and condition, the 4 bangers are doing "around" the same.

So what does that mean, let's say a dealer pays $16,0 for it, you have transport, you have some service, you have a detail, a little this, a little that, by the time they are done they might have have $16,5+ in it, a "fair" price for both might be $18ish ..

          I hope this helps ...

I've owned the car for over a year (the 03 CL arrived at dealers in March of 2002), so the miles aren't that high, really. Color is "Aegean Blue Pearl" with Black interior. Condition of both is excellent (like may others here at Town Hall, I'm rather anal about that).

FWIW, a local Honda dealer gave me a ballpark number of $23k, which is right in line with your initial estimate.
