We hope you are having a great holiday, we do have 1 more for you, actually 2.
Our neighbor is trying to sell 2 cars, yes 2 at one time and isn't having any luck, so I thought we would call the pro into this and let him read it himself.
(1)The first one is a 98 Caddy Eldo, 44k, NOT a ETC, champagne in color, leather, heated sts, cd, no sunroof, clean inside and out non smoker, usually sits in the garage in the winter, new tires, has a spoiler and a 1/4 matching vinyl top, looks sharp, drives like brand new, no kisses or funny stuff. He has been asking $18,900 and will take $17,000 but he hadn't had 1 offer, it's a real nice car (2) The other one is literally like new, 5k, it's a Mercedes SL500 white, blue leather interior, blue top, always garaged and no winters, special wheels(?) and sport package (?) this one is new, I mean new new new. He is asking $59,000 (lot's of money, you never know it until you write it down :) also not one offer after 2/3 weeks in the paper and the MB club something.
Both he had cleaned, both look like new cars, both have had zero offers, whats up?

Have a great weekend and thanks again!

Some things have happened and I'm moving. Need to sell the Corolla quick. What would a dealer do on it do you think?

2001 Toyota Corolla CE, 46k, 5-speed, a/c, am/fm/cass, tan/tan, its in excellent shape inside and out. It does need tires though.

    Thanks.

Nissan dealer rejected our ofer this afternoon on the Sentra. I offered 9.5 k with the '96 Corolla DX as a trade. I wanted the Sentra GXE with the Road Trip Package with a pin stripe, door edge guards, and wheel well mouldigs. They wanted to charge us a dealer fee of $499. on top of the tt&l. They wanted $10.5k otd right then and $11.2k tomorrow. We talked among ourselves and said we'd do the $10.5k(actualy their figure was $10,497.) right now. They then came back and said sorry, there were other minor issues and let us walk. Am very confused on this, have a call into the salesman right now to find out what the heck happened. They never even counter offered us.
Honestly, were we that out of line here? Will e-mail 2 other dealers closer to home with an offerof $10k out the door just to start negotiations. Any help would be appreciated!
    Confused down in Ft. Lauderdale!!!

Just saw an '02 audi allroad 2.7T w/ all options (incl. 3rd seat and 2 tone interior) except side shades and navi. 14K miles. Lemon repurchase due to faulty turbo. KBB rates this as poor w/ marked title and does not provide trade-in values. Whats it worth trade and whats a good price to pay for it? Wholesale book on this puppy is probably around 39K and i am thinking $10K back of book for the lemon law ding but more experienced counsel is sought.

What are the pitfalls in buying lemon law buybacks, other than the obvious price haircut? e.g. I have heard banks wont finance those cars (like salvage titles).

Whats a fair trade value for an '00 A6 4.2 (sil/blk) w/ all the gizmos (except heated seats and navi) and 30K miles? Whats a good purchase price?

Separately, handsfree, i just sold my '01 SL500 sport w/ the 8/100 premium starmark warranty and got $55K and i think i got ALL the money in it. Tough mkt for those cars but anywhere b/w $50-53 should do it @ retail. On the left coast lots of '99s w/ way less than 15K miles in the very low $40s are killing the mkt for '01s and '02s. Saw a starmarked silver arrow '02 w/ 13K miles for $56.9 @ a benz dealer.

thanks for the informative post about the vehicle. the more information you can give Terry, the more accurate number he can give you.... how about 4x4? ext/ls/lt/ltz? options and option packages? any body work/accidents/body damage? how is the condition? where does it live?

could be worth maybe 5? maybe 15k? who knows?

Time to go to your room.

    Terry,
Can you hit this one for my mother-in-law. she is looking to purchase. lives in Tennessee, black with black leather, 30,000 miles, pretty spotless, good condition, will need new tires in the next 10k or so.

    thanks.

most lenders won't touch a lemon law buyback car and no extended warranty company will, either. The manufacturer is required to warranty the vehicle for 12 months/12,000 miles, but that could very well be all the waranty you get. Saving $10-12K isn't even close the real financial hit you'll take.

What's the range that '01 and '02 M3s are seeing at the block? Any changes since I last asked? I see some '02 cars priced just a couple thou more than virtually identical '01 cars...seems to me like there should be more difference. From what I understand, the dealers have started discounting the new ones under MSRP...but all the used prices I see still act like they're selling over MSRP like they were back in '01. Let's assume average or slightly below mileage, and middle of the road options (not a stripper, not loaded).

I have the LS model with 2WD. It also has a sliding sunroof and running boards. I was in one accident, where I was rear ended. The only damage I received was a couple of nicks in the rear bumper. Other than that and the transmission, the car is in good condition. I reside in Atlanta.

....... I dunno if I'm reading this right or not ... it's a 01 EX Accord (auto, 4dr, no accidents.?) 4 banger, all the nice stuff, slider Cd, low miles 22k - you are Asking $13,5 .. and you know of folks that are asking $12,0 for the same vehicle, same miles .. right.? am I reading this right ...? .. I think I spent too much time on the boat, too much sun, too much "Lowka da Boca" to drink , I don't get it.

You can get $14,0+ on a trade, why are you asking $13,5 on the retail end .. I'm missing something here, where do you live, the Falklands .? ~ where's my Tylenol ..?

.... Thanks, I hope you had a nice and safe Holiday also.!

Here's the deal Lucille .. when folks sell their vehicles on their own, they need to stop and think, do good research and put their ego and their emotions in the circular file .. they look at KBB, Edmund's, Nada, National Geographic, American plumber, Oprah, then they pick the highest retail figure they can find .. of course, everyone punches the "excellent" condition column - hey no such thing, but in this case a 5k SL might be worth it - *depending on the market*.

In the case of the Eldo, it sounds nice, clean, miles are low for the year, great color probably a real nice vehicle .. but it's not a ETC, no slider, that's a tuff market on a big 2dr, folks like them loaded up and the 00's can be bought for just a few bucks more with a factory warranty .. based on what you are telling me, it's worth "around" the ultra high $9's on a trade if it's perfect and needs -0- .. down Retail Rd, $13,5 "asking" and kick that dude lose at $11,5/$12,5 .. .. $17,0 ...? not in this Galaxy ... !

Sweetv12 is dead on the SL .. most get driven as a 2nd car, most have ultra low miles, most are perfect and there is a bunches for sale .. folks start looking at the books, or they see the dealer is asking Xtra Large money and they feel they can do the same - the big difference is, dealers need all that mark-up to "show" a Huge trade allowance, especially on Benz and Caddy buyers .. the SL is probably worth in and around $48ish on a trade .. down Retail Rd (no matter what book their reading) $54,999 "asking" and $51/$53 get's a new owner -- these may end up being better trade-in's if your friend is from the Philly area .. 6% savings on the difference (right.?) .. this way, he can get over himself .l.o.l. .. $59,000 for an 01 ...? I Don't think so .. I just sold a 02 with 9k for $59,0 and it was cleaner than the "Board of Health" and twice as sanitary ...

Good luck and let me know ...

                            Terry :-)

PS. Thanks Sweetv12 for your help.! (Yep, you got ALL the money)

One more question when you get the chance.

I'm going to somewhere in the midwest or Texas, would I be better off to sell the truck up here or when I get there. I was thinking about trying to trade it for a minivan or suburban of equal value.

1994 Chevy K2500, 4x4, auto, 7.4L 454, red/black with gray interior, silverado pkg, captains chairs, pwr windows/locks, a/c, am/fm/cass, knee deep in rubber, now the kicker, it has 134k on it.

The truck is in perfect shape, meaning it looks and drives like an 01 and 20k.

As a single mom (yup, going through a divorce) I don't see the point in such a big truck, but if I can't get anything for it I guess I'll keep it. So far the dealers up here have offered either nothing or $3500.
  • 18fan18fan Member Posts: 129
Sorry to hear of your misfortune.....
           .........best wishes to ya..........!

Do you owe anything on the truck? Maybe that should help determine which one to keep... Also, you could use the truck to haul the Corolla to the lower 48. :-)

What would be the right amount to pay for a 2003 Honda Element 4WD EX with 2700 miles on it?

The truck is paid for the Corolla has a $7500 loan on it. The truck is my best bet anyway, its big and safe and reliable, well, the Corolla is reliable too.

I am selling a 98 Ford Mustang, 2 door coupe. It's dark green, 5 spd, has CD player, cruise control, spoiler, power windows and seats. The car is in excellent condition and has only 52000 miles on it. The NADA guide tells me that the average retail value is $8850, while the Edmunds.com True Market Value says $8947 for the Private Party and $10,488 for the Dealer Retail value. The first fellow that came to see it yesterday offered $8200. I advertised it for $8900 obo. I paid $14,000 for it 2 1/2 years ago. I think I may have priced it too low. I want at least $8900, but I think people need to feel as if they have negotiated in order to feel they got a good deal.

    Your thoughts?

There is a $1500 rebate on the 03 Sentra, nothing on the 04 Sentra as of yet, which has just come out in the middle of May. The SE-R has a $1000 rebate.

I am selling a red 9-3 convertible, automatic, with 21,500 miles. It is in very good condition and has a CD player and heated leather seats. I'm in the Chicago area and am trying to decide whether to trade it in or sell it myself (I'm thinking the sales tax advantage of trading-in will be worth >$1,500?). What do you think I can get for this vehicle? Thanks.

Terry, this past weekend I traded the 2001 SS. With your guidance, a month later I did get $13,500 for the car. Had several bids at $11,000, I told them my information indicated these were doing at least $14 at the auctions about amonth ago, and the last bid came in at $13,500 which I accepted.

    Wanted to say thanks. =)

...... Oooh, a little SS action going on here .. all the stuff, plus no miles, right color, slider, no Ho Ho's, no Dixie creams ..

Hmmm, the market is kinda strong on these pups right now .. you gotta see at Least $14,0 on the trade side, if it's as clean as you say it is ..

    Hi Terry,

I would appreciate it if you could help a friend determine a reasonable trade-in value on his soon-to-be wife's car:

2002 Honda Accord EX sedan V-6, red metallic, tan leather interior, CD changer, sunroof, 14,200 miles, 11 months old. No dings or dents, so it's in pretty decent shape (been garaged nights and workdays). Located in the metro Milwaukee area. Black book says 19.5, KBB says 18.5, dealer says 17.

    What's fair?

    I'd greatly appreciate your input.

    Thank you, in advance,

    Terry,

Just got off the phone with my mechanic. My 92 convertible with 128,000 miles, chipping paint-has the following problems:(1) needs a new radiator (2) needs a new oxygen sensor (3) has a failing transmission (4) convertible top doesn't close (5) has a leaking head gasket (6) air conditioning doesn't work.(7) bunch of other little stuff wrong as well

In short a true mechanical wonder-Do I offer it to my mechanic in exchange for his diagonostic work or does this thing have value to a junk yard?
    Thanks in advance

please don't assume, out of respect. Another easy way to take care of it is to donate it to teh charity of your choice. Most major charities have programs where they'll pick it up for free and you can write it off on your taxes.

...... Sorry to hear about the situation ..

NOT knowing what vehicles really look like in Alaska .. I'm guessing that Texas or the Minnesota region "might" be the place for the K (it's a Ecab .. right.?) .. Silverado package, 454 and 4x4 .. right now, based on what you are telling me, they are doing "around" the high $4's, low $5's with 120/140k --IF-- they are clean, knee deep, needs -0- and lookin' like a 00 .. that tells me the dealers, or a private seller can see $6,5ish on the retail side.

The Corolla is sounding like a $7ish vehicle on a trade, $8,5 on the retail side with tires.

I'm sorry about the other thing :((

    What Terry said :-(

I drove the Alcan last month and it's in good shape, if that matters in your decision when you drive out. Can't help but think a 4x4 would sell better up there, but it's hard to argue with "paid for." Best of luck.

.... I totally agree with you .. but it "seems" with as many times that she has bought vehicles (and she's an ex-Car dog) in the last 4/5 years they don't "seem" to put the money in them .. but they sure want psycho money for even the Junk. I guess thats a market that's all to itself(?) .. Now, it has my interest. When I take my cruise up there in August, everyone else will be lookin' at 3,000 year old indian sites .. me, I will be wondering around car lots talking to dealers (Slap me Jesus.!) .l.o.l.

    ....... Good questions ..

Here's my humble, stupid opinion on these Lemon buy-backs -- not all, but most, like 70%+ are the "real deal" complaints .. I also have been in the biz long enough to know that there is some Great Actors out there, and they are lookin' for a Academy Award and a new vehicle to go with.

If it's a constant failure, electrical, drivetrain, sensors, windows and such that can be duplicated at least 30% of the time, then there is a problem, maybe a Big problem .. if the vehicle is down in the shop 2/3/4 times for the same incident - it "might" be a lousy service dept, that's why I always recommend getting a 2nd opinion, even if it's a 30 mile ride .. we do it for Dr's (or we should.!) so we should also do it for with service depts.

If you have 2 "top notch" service depts agreeing across the board, then it might be time to step up some big time heat .. now, a vibrating mirror doesn't count, a rear window that makes a small sound in the up position at 52mph and at 88 degree's doesn't count, a digital Bose system that should change tracks in 4 seconds, instead of the 2 seconds that's stated in the manual doesn't count, etc, etc.com.

Should folks get their moneys worth AND get great service ~ ABSOLUTELY ~ .. but in all fairness, for the guy that complains that the wiper blade is too loud at 67mph and the power seat doesn't function right when he ways 350 lbs kinda sucks the life out of service Mgrs, especially when they are calling Zone reps, VP's, etc.

Now that I bored you into a coma, have this vehicle checked out .. get the "actual" service records and spend $20 bucks, and take the actual service guy that worked on it out to lunch, and see what he see's and feel what he feels .. he has nothing to lose or gain. If he put's the Kibosh on it, then there's an existing pattern, if it's common and he has no faith, then it's time to look elsewhere ... every incident is different and I have heard some great stories, some good some bad, a few were written by Rod Serling .l.o.l..

Now Turbo's are whole different critter .. was it a failed system, was everything re-done and fully covered by Audi, does the vehicle have a full warranty from Audi which is 4/50,000 ..? Did they do a 110% job but the customer was still PO'd and did a Greta Garbo in the showroom ..? inquiring minds need to know .... right now, they are doing "around" that $34ish zipcode at the block .. the ultra nice A6's with the big block 4.2 with all the stuff, 25/30k are doing "around" 26/$27 at the block, the time they get them home and "certify" them $28ish, gotta be $31 or less on the buy side.

                 I hope this helps ...

                        Terry.

Went to 3 dealers this past weekend after we definitely decided on the '03 Sentra. No '04's down here in South Florida yet, so....
First dealer jerked us around, first said $10.5 and my car otd if we took it right then, $11.2 any other time. He left us alone to talk, we then agreed, he went back to his manager, no dice now at $10.5k, said there were "minor issues". Let us walk with no explanation.
Went home and sent out 2 e-mails to two closer dealers. Memorial Day morning, went to another dealer, $11.0k with my car otd, again, it had to be right then. We decided to try the dealer that sold us the '01 Altima 2 years ago, nice no pressure dealership.
Went down into Pompano and within 5 minutes, they had me at $10.9 and my car with the add-ons otd, to be delivered on thursday morning. SOLD!
Well...? And there is a $1500. rebate.

    The Sandman :-)
(wife is quite happy because the car will be hers within the year!).

    ..... Good for YOU ...!

I thought there was "at least" a ghee whiz in rebate money .. but I checked Edmund's this AM and they showed -0- and no rate $$ .. so I drake another cop of coffee, ate a blueberry bagel with strawberry jam and there was still nothing on the site - I was going to call my neighbor (he's a Nissan dealer) but since I had to carry him off the boat last night I knew he wouldn't be up til' noon .l.o.l..

                    You did good, real good.!

I could use some negotiating tips when buying a car with a trade-in.

If I check the trade in value of my car on the Kelly and Edmunds site and in the NADA book at the libray (do they have a web site?), and all three sources list a similiar value for my trade, is this what I can expect as my "real world" trade in value? How should I present this information to the dealer... right up front, or start with a high asking price?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... That depends on a whole bunch of things (in this case, I would say no, strictly good customer relations) .. let's say this guys turbo went sideways and there is only 2 recorded in the US of A .. let's say the customer said he was in the shop 7 times in 5 months and 7k for the same thing - but in all actuality, the first time was for the molding (but he says, he "mentioned" a turbo problem) the second time was a "air" noise and a oil change (but he says, he "mentioned" a turbo problem) .. the 3rd time in, the carpet is rolling up by the hatch door (but he says, he "mentioned" a turbo problem) .. 4th time in, in 4 months he's getting grumpy because the roof rack rattles at 85mph, but this time he Really says there is a turbo squeal or whatever. It get's documented along with the roof rack, "it's a can't duplicate" - 5th time it gets overnighted by the Service MGR and he finds something .. 2 Techs later and 6 hrs later they "think" it's a sensor at high RPM, then it becomes a this or a that.

Come the 7th time in, the service folks say *^#@ it, call Audi and replace the whole friggin' thing from the caps up, under warranty .. in the meantime, Dr Doodles is all yanked out of shape, he spent his $50 grand and $50 grand should buy you ZERO problems anytime anywhere, yatty yatty yatty .. (in the meantime, his last patient spent $250,000 and he still can't walk .l.o.l.) .. now the vehicle is running like a Kentucky Derby champion, but he wants OUT.

You do this stuff all the time and sadly, you just went through this with your PT and that was a "real deal" .. I'm painting with a wide brush right now, but I think you know what I mean ... the legits get a slapped title, the Vegas hustlers go back on line.

                       Terry :-)

I currently drive a 2002 Pontiac Aztek. It's a company fleet vehicle. I have driven it since day one. It is FWD, pwr windows/locks/mirrors, ABS, cruise, CD, AUTO, 16 inch alloys, deep tinted windows and the console cooler (no keyless entry). Currently it has 48K on it (I drive it everyday) and up for sale to employees. They stated they would sell them at wholesale to us. They rated my Aztek at $10,500 which I think is a bit high considering it is a fleet vehicle that has had the interior beaten up a bit. I carry lots of boxes which has ruffed up the cargo area a bit. They are throwing in a 75K GM extended warranty. The exterior is clean, no dings or rock chips. The tires are recent and it's been serviced very well. Is 10.5K a good price?

Hi Terry, longtime reader, first-time requester...

We've got a 2001 Rav4 here in Phoenix, wanted to get your take on it. Here are the particulars:

2wd (not a big deal here in Phoenix)
    19xxx miles
    Automatic
    Silver metallic
    Aftermarket leather
    PW, PL, CC, CD/Cassette combo
    Alloys
Roof rack, Hard spare tire cover, Spoiler, Fogs
"L" package (nicer trim, includes most of above)
    Plenty of life in tires
Better than good condition, though not excellent
    No moonroof, no ABS

Into it for about 13,600 at this point, think I'm right side up a small bit, wanted to get your input on trade-in/private sale. Thanks for your help, have always enjoyed your insights on the "Inconsiderate" threads.

..... Thanks for the help .. so we have a black on black TL, we got 30k, we have the Nav, tires are a little on the weak side and we live in Tennessee ..

Miles are ok, the color is good for the area and the Nav helps .. you know the drill, no kisses, no re-paint, no I dropped 5 gallons of Glidden Stain Master in the back seat .. she should be seeing the low to mid $18's on a trade.

                 Thanks for stopping by ...

                           Terry :)

..... Good morning .. right now the 01's with 20kish, clean, glow in the dark types are doing "around" $38ish at the auctions .. 02's are doing around the $44ish zipcode with 7/9k ...

I always wonder what happens to some of the folks that post and I don't hear back - I guess that's "why" there's a black hole in the universe .l.o.l..

I'm glad things worked out ...

..... Sorry, didn't catch it all .. for the more "average types", $35ish for the 01's and $40ish for the 02's ... that should help.

                    Terry.

.... Oh boy "Eclectic" blue, not a big seller and the miles are on the tall side .. if the service is 100%, deep in rubber, no I used my car in a jackass commercial and the interior doesn't have a bunch of mini-mortar holes .. then you should be seeing the the ultra high $7's, low $8's on a trade ...
