I saw where you mentioned that the 96 DeVille had 160,000 on the clock...
$6,000 was if anything, generous! Miles like that kill those cars. A Nice one with very low miles is at best worth $12K... MAX.

Jags are now pretty much among the best. And the newer Volvos do have fiddly problems, but overall they are good cars...

Del Frisco's in Orlando (On Lee rd 1/2 mi W of I-4 in Winter Park which is north of downtown) is outstanding.
So is Smith and Wollensky, Peter Luger's and my faves, the Palm Too and Manhattan Grille (formerly Manhattan Cafe) in NYC.
In Orlando also Ruth's Chris in Winter Park and Morton's in Bay Hill/Dr Phillips area (Close to Universal and next to where I live.. but a Ruth's Chris is going up next door.. cool!).

Traded it in on a 2001 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl 5 spd...BUT now wishes he had traded it in on a 2001 Chrysler Sebring 2 door! He said he got $13,500 trade value on the 1999 Maxima. Was he ripped off? A 2nd Honda dealership offered him only $12,800 on a similar 2001 Accord EX.
On to the Maxima....
Umm... 99 GXE? Umm... the less said to him the better. I think he could have gotten another $1,500-2,000+++++++++ for it easily... If it's the model I am thinking of.. It ought to be worth $16K or so as a minimum....
But remember you have to live next to the guy....

What would a reasonable retail be for a '98, 35K, Touring model, Auto, decent color? Not a certified car (private dealer).
Also, saw another GS300, black with tan, usual options, 28K miles, at a Toyota dealer for $26,999. That a good price for black?

I think $18-19K is fair retail for a low-mile '98 Touring. They're a good value and nice cars.. but... after looking at the S80 and 528i and GS300.. will ya be happy with one?
And $26,999 for that GS300 is a steal if it's nice and isnt in some jerky equipment combo like No moonroof or no leather or something...

I decide on the Volvo tomorrow. May go look at the Lexus first (if it is still there) and compare back to back. It is loaded (leather, roof, CD changer). Saw it the other day, when it was listed at 32K.
Even better deal non-certified since the powertrain warranty is 6 or 7 years.
Actually, 8 K more for the lexus doesn't sound bad at all.

Seems like a reasonable price. I'd say that it's about a $13,500-14,000 truck wholesale, so you're certainly not overpricing it. Although I'd try $15,950 only as it looks better...
Although, if you're in a state (Im not sure in SC) where sales tax is about 6% and you get a trade-in sales tax credit... You may consider trading it. If you get $14K on trade, that's $14,840 or so including the tax credit...

Thats why I think you ought to consider selling the car yourself.
See, to guys like me and Terry it's another Honda Accord.. there's always a LOT of them floating around... and this is one with a lot of miles on it, no matter how nice.
However, a car like yours... you ought to be able to sell it privately and really do well with it. Have you tried it? makes sense, particularly in your situation as I keep hearing about people having to order their MDXs..

Im not thrilled with I30s personally. A very nice car, and a very good value.. but... well.. they dont seem real special to me... Well, I take that back. I like them, but I'd MUCH rather be in a GS300 or S80.
However, a 3-year old GS300 is worth, at wholesale, basically about what a heck of a deal is on a new I30...
So, nicer as the GS is... It's a lot more money...
I'd still lean towards the Volvo but I'm prejudiced.
Oh, Lexus has a 6yr-70K powertrain warranty.

Say you have a 2000 Lexus LX470 to trade. Those things can be worth close to $50,000.
That's a $3,000 tax advantage.. and well... at that point you dont bother selling it yourself.
Heck, when you get into exotics it's a wash really! (I have done some Bentley deals.. when you get a 2-year old Azure trade worth $220,000 then it is profitable to trade it in almost! but that is a very extreme example).
Figure you could get $10-11K for it privately... I dunno.. but if you gotta order the MDX... it's worth trying...

Which is likely to depreciate the least in the next 2-3 years, in case I get the urge again (and I will).
All seem like good deals, and nice in there own ways, which is why I've had so much trouble making up my mind. At least if it holds value, I can always make a change without losing the old shirt.

I know it's a lot cheaper than the others you're looking at, but how cheap will it be if in one year you realize you can't stand it.
If you're willing to drive an auto, I still say that the Acura TLs are an incredible bargain (even if you have to pay full sticker, as many Acura stores are asking). Plus, they just came out with the Type S--sweet A car.
It's your decision, of course, but I think you'd be settling if you got the I30 and, in the long run, you wouldn't be saving any money at all.
Bill/Terry - do you ever take any customers (be it friends/family/etc...) to auctions? I know it's illegal, and you could lose your license if you get caught...
I'm thinking about trading in my teal '92 Toyota Corolla LE as part of a new car deal. The Corolla has 94000 miles, A/C, sunroof, power windows/locks, cruise control, and AM/FM/cassette player. The car looks in good condition (paint, interior, etc), though there are a few problems upon closer inspection:
1. Broken side mirror
2. There's a leak somewhere that lets water into the passenger side floor area. We've tried to get it fixed, but it didn't stay fixed for long. The floor on that side has been damp on and off for the last year or so (Washington State gets a lot of rain).
3. The power windows don't work very well, squeaking/grinding when they open or close.
4. The car has various rattles and squeaks, though none of them seem unusual for a 10-year old car.
5. The idle is rough, and the brakes are somewhat mushy (might need some brake work).
One dealer looked at it, but I was surprised at how poor his inspection was. I could have evaluated a used car better than he did. It was almost as if he didn't really care about anything other than the basic specs of the car and its mileage. This was after we'd negotiated a deal on the new car.
I wasn't sure if I should tell him the problems with the car, since he didn't even bother to ask. He offered $1600, which I declined.
Any feedback? What is a fair trade-in price for the car? I know I could get more by selling it privately, but I'm willing to take a loss in order to avoid the hassle.

Really though -- The GS300, at that price -- that's a great deal......I feel you would really like it...for a long time --- SO Jump..!
That is a good Idea - to compare the Volvo/Lexus ...back to Back --- Both great car's ---- some say ...potatoe --- and some say put tat to'........

"Real money" - on that vehicle is a about -- that $8500/9000 figure ....So if someone is showing you more --- then that would be overallowance -- which means- they are discounting their vehicle to secure your busines ........
You might to go back to that dealer...that "showed you" $9700.....That's a deal
The sunbird's are plentiful...lot's of rebate's..etc.....So, I think --- I would be on my way if I was you....

Did drive an I30 agian (base model). Not real exciting, certainly not as nice as Lexus/volvo. Guess you get what ya pay for. Audia (A4) much nicer, just too cramped.
One question about the S80 (and this may be dumb): all of the lug nuts are rusty. I didn't see one other car on the lot that had the same problem. Has anyone seen this before? Car is 6 months old, but this seems really odd.
Might be paranoia, but for 30K of my money, it better be perfect without any skeletons in the closet.

I'm trying to sell my '92 Miata via the web and the local auto-trader publication. It's what they called a 'C' pkg (later on became the 'M') and has 33k miles, and no snow (N.E.). As it's been my toy it's in close to perfect condition, one end to the other. In addition, I've added close to $4000 in goodies over the last several years, mostly cosmetic and no extra hp. except from an open intake box and a looser exhaust. The books range in value from $5300 to $6800 but of course don't know anything about the extras.
So, a month ago I listed it for $10,000. Very little action. Could be I have the price too high, or that in all this #$*& snow buyers just aren't ready to think about top/down rides. What do you think?
I do have one offer of $8500. Think I should grab it? Or hold on?

Consumer's, look more toward's the sporty...and right now, the sport ute's are very plentiful....Food for thought --- I would thinkin', more towards that $15,500 asking price...and if you would like a quick sale....I would be at that - $14,950- price...

$10,000 is all the money in the world for a -- 1995 -- "M" package with auto..and the hardtop....

But anyway...........It's hard to get non-dealer people through...it's not that anyone is hiding anything ---- But, they do have this down to a science ....It may not look like it when you first walk in ..l...o...l...--- but they do..
They also have to think about theft's ...un-guarded transfers and draft's.....million's and million's of dollar's in inventory......thousand's of title's in one day...down-graded account's etc....you can just about name it ..--- I give the girl's ( people ) a lot of credit for their job's ..every one from the detailers to the Auctioneer's ( well most of them..l..o..l...) .......
But the question is ...Have I ever taken someone with me... --- and the answer is yes..in a very limited situation -- Depending on the auction ...--- sometimes you may just have a couple of hundred buyer's on a given day.... --- But like the Big Manheim PA..I go to on Thurs/Fri.....Gee whiz...You have thousand's -- I mean thousand's, it look's like an airport at Xmas week...and they have to watch -everyone-...they need to know if you are a buyer or seller...or both, where's your numbers..and vehicles etc..etc.....
It still surprises me sometimes...when I just stand in a lane and watch a hundred people run past me .. to look at some vehicle to bid on ...

Remember...there is 3 prices - when selling any thing....
1.) an Asking
2.) a liking
3.) and a taking price.....
You can ask anything you like.....But, you would like to get ..abc
And when it comes to bare bones....on any given day...you just might have to go with that taking price.......But, to get back to your question --- what's it worth.....Well, they are running at the auctions ..somewhere in that $17,000 to $18,000 range with all the toy's -- leather,V8, roof etc in a 2whl drive......If it's a 4x4 --- you are looking at $18,500 to $19,000.....Remember-- right now, there is a lot of dealer cash/rebates etc....because the new body syle will be out in 3 month's....

Mercury is offering .9% financing for 60 mo plus a 1250 rebate on 2001 models. This adds up to apx $5000 in incentives.Then the vehicle can be bought somewhere near invoice. This is around 3500-4000 off of sticker. So from list there is a $9000 dollar reduction in the vehicles value. If you start at $33000 this means a value of $24000. Killing the value of 1999 and 2000 models the most. Why pay $23K for a used vs similar numbers for a brand new model? These types of huge incentives kill resale on newer used vehicles like yours. Every time the MFG gives us a tremendous incentive our used car depart goes crazy since you can often buy a new car for less than a 1 yr old used one.
Mix that with a huge influx of off lease explorerer's/mountaneers, the bad press on the tires, going into spring and the market disappears overnight.
also we have the totally redesigned 2002 mountaneers in-stock already so the wholesale market thinks as your 2000 model vehicle as 2 years old...wish I had better news for you

All dealer's have them...and it break's down each manufactor with models and options...and how, they have done the week before.. --- The big difference ..is .. knowing how to read them --- and be able to judge what that vehicle "might" do on the retail end, if purchased.....A lot of mistakes can be made.....and they are.. because it's very easy to read some number's and guess..
The real number's really work -- with experienced people that know when to go to "clean" end of the book....or go to the rough end ...or anything in between --- I see it every day....when some GSM from a large Auto group pay's $1500 more than he should on vehicle's ....which, is reflective to the dealer...and very reflective to the consumer's...
Did you ever wonder why....when you read the Ad's in the paper --- and dealer A is pricing a vehicle at $15,000 and the dealer across town -- has the same vehicle - miles / option's etc -- for $1,500 less......Somebody didn't do their job at the auction...and fell asleep at the wheel - so to speak - and paid waaay to much......well it happen's everyday...
That's why it is so important ( alway's ) ..to have a person that goes to a auction.......and know's what to look, feel and touch for.....
