Unless it's some putrid color (You know better by now, right? or something... Venetian Red, Emerald Green... bad.
Silver, Moondust, Ash Gold, Black (In NJ) all good.
It's a hell of a car, and the maintinence bills are low too. I went ahead and cheated. If it's Silver and has 22K miles they paid $27,500 or 27,900 at the auction either a week ago or a month ago. If it's moondust with 22K they paid $28,500 in Jan.
That's hammer price, plus fee, shipping, etc...
$30K is a good deal on the car. No regrets at that price.
So, will ya let us know? And I wanna see a pic when you get it!
I was rteferring to that XJR on eBay that I posted a link to. Yeah, you can really get into pissing contests on those.. Esp Topaz, Sapphire, Silver or Carnival. a Big buyer for em is Alan Fisher of Main Jaguar in Madison, NJ.
He's like 5-10", mustache... always is at Manheim with a clipboard and is writing down the price of every car that sells. Always stands behind the crowd right in front of the auctioneer.
Thanks for the input. They have silver, moondust and dark (midnight?) blue. Wife likes the blue, I'm kinda leaning toward the moondust.
Silver was nice, but her van is silver, and I don't like an all black interior.
Where does the dark blue fit in your good-to-putrid spectrum, and do you think I would have a better chance of niggling the last few hundred off the price on one of those 2?
Just need to drive it again to make sure I'm not giving up too much "sporty" for all the luxury (boy, is this a comfy car).
....That's a great price...If, you don't mind the miles..get it.....and if you can get the wife to refrane...forget the blue...it's a great color ..clean.. but 1 hr later......well, you know the story......
A big thanks for your advice and help. You two field a tremendous amount of questions. I don't how you keep track of all the questions! I never really look into Subarus until just recently. I was surprise to see that even their "base" models come very well equipped. I'm also looking at getting a 5 year old used compact sedan for my wife to teach her how to drive. Looking at Mazda Protege ES, Chevy Prizms, and Ford Escorts all with automatic. So my car purchase might have to take a back seat for her car. Can any of these cars be had for around 5-6 grand with average mileage on them?
Thanks,
Leo
P.S. Terry....I'm about 7 miles from the Butler Auto Auction just outside Zelinople if that's the one your talking about. If so it is a small world indeed
Are these auctions only for dealers? I would think so, but I'm asking for the hell of it. Just in case. I also assume you need to pay in cash that day or something like that?
Anyway, my latest thoughts are leaning towards a '98 S70 T5 Volvo. Bill, Terry, what are your thoughts? I'd be looking to one with a manual tranny, but otherwise fully loaded. And I'm a little wary about getting a 3-year-old Turbo car, though. You just can't know how the previous owner treated it.
I thought about a '00 S40, but you can't get one with a manual tranny. That sucks.
I still like the idea of the Lincoln LS. All I can do is hope that it will fall to within my price range in the next few months or so, but I don't think that will happen. and, if it does, would that then really be a car that I'd want to buy?
Ideally, I guess I'd prefer a "semi-automatic" transmission (or whatever you want to call it). Any suggestions for a $20K car that would have that? Obviously, I want to stay within the last 3 years or so ('98 or newer), considering that my trade-in is a '99.
I'm still a few months away from making a move, but I want to be well prepared. Not to mention I'm anxious. I love cars. My wife wants to kill me. But I have to save up a downpayment first.
thanks.

O.k. since you insist on details it's a 3.3L engine. Coworker is looking trade it in or sell it; if you could speculate on the values it would be very helpful. Thanks!
Another reason for me prolonging my decision on the Forester, besides the wife needing a reliable used car, is that the Subaru Forester is in for a makeover for the 2003 model year. Speculation is either a turbo 2.5L or perhaps the H6 and perhaps some rear suspension work.
Took a longer drive in the '01 S80 (Nautic blue, only color available). Very smooth car, not particularly exciting but comfy.
Also have the option of a loaded (as in every option, including Nav) V70 T-5, also a 2001 with miles in the mid-20s (Volvo exec car).
The wagon is silver, 17" wheels, AT, all the stereo upgrades. MSRP is about $43,000 (still over 40K w/o the cost of the Nav).
Beautiful car, very fun to drive, whats a good price vs. the S80? Dealer seems pretty firm in the low 31 range.
Looks like the Volvo dealer is getting lots of my money, just have to decide what to spend it on. Need to save some for the divorce lawyer, since the wife will leave me if I don't get something soon.
Hi! I just started reading this thread today and I think it's great of you to do this! I'm looking to trade my car off fairly soon (probably for a new Toyota Celica) and I was wondering if you could tell me what I should expect.
It's a 1993 Mercury Topaz GS, 4-door, automatic, light blue, power windows, door locks and driver's seat, rear defroster, AM/FM cassette, cruise control. It has a few minor flaws that will need to be fixed (cracked winshield, power locks don't work right, rear defroster broken) but it has low mileage for a '93, only 71,550 and has only needed minor repairs since I've owned it. I've gotten 3 different trade in estimates from Edmunds ($2,061), Kelley Blue Book ($1,845) and NADA ($1,700). Can you tell me which of these are the most accurate or if I should actually expect something much lower? I live in central Missouri, if that's important.
This was discussed many threads ago. What is the approx % of buyers who contact you via internet/email vs the % who buy that walk in the door? Do either of you use AutoTrader? Do you keep your used and new inventory on the web? Thanks in advance.
Looking to sell my 97 Galant DE 5 speed on my own, I am sure the dealer would give me a pittance for it. And it is a shame, since the stick is great to drive (better than auto), car is excellent, I am original, and it has 34k miles on clock. And, a bonus extended warranty to 70k! Please give me opinions as to whether I can get a decent price myself, all the sites I check have it in the high 8's "retail", I would like to get low 8's. Thanks all.
And the new T5 is a bit of a monster! Fun, isn't it? And the S80 2.9 wont light you on fire but it's a great highway cruiser... and you probably cannot buy a safer car than these new Volvos.
........ It is a very small world.....I was there again today..! --- In that, little bitty rain storm, that lasted 6 hour's ( I bought a bunch of car's though..)....Yeow....Gee whiz, If I would have known, you live so close...I would have stopped for dinner.......l..o..l....Yes, it's a small world indeed........
A friend of mine had one of those in college (I went to SIU Edwardsville... not too far from you, hung out in Columbia a bunch of times which has to be close to you) so I know em well..except his was this nasty beige.. and it was also a wreck....
I think those sites are all close.. the windsheild hurts it a bit, if you have full coverage or even comprehensive a lot of ins companies will fix a windsheild with $0 deductible, pays to find out.
The car hits me in the $1,000-1,500 range. I think that with a windsheild fixed you could get as high as $1,750-2K for it, but it "hits" me at $1,500....
However, if you're near Columbia, bear this in mind. Cars like that are an easy private sale near a college campus. Students like cheap cars... $3,500/best offer is certainly worth asking for (But fix the windsheild!)
........Well the dual air help's it ....the miles don't.....drk green in Fl....doesn't help --- If you are in Yankee land -- it matter's not ( might help ) ...they are available in large #'s...And, I saw a ton, of them run today........So, you are in and around that..$6,800 to $7,200 range..
Live in NYC suburbs. I've got a '96 Accord EX V6 4dr which has everything but a cdplayer. Leather, sunrf, amfm cassette, lojack, pwr all. Presently has 72450 hiway miles (40 mile rt commute, trips to Albany, Boston etc)w/all service records. What will this bring me in a trade towards one of those infamous Acura MDX's which are selling at MSRP?
Hey guys....in case nobody's noticed there's a little nice secret at the US/Canada border: the exchange rate is $1 (usd) = $1.57 (cdn)!!!
Now just imagine how much one of those sexy jags could go for in the Great White North! Save big bucks. I did a little research on the Chevy Camaro, base model, MSRP is $3K cheaper when money is converted to usd. Now that's a 20K car. Imagine buying a Lexus or Jag up north!!!!
so that brings me to a new question: if I wanted to go to Canada & trade my car in, how much would I get? Do they use a different system of valuation on used cars? Would they give me the trade-in value in cdn money? Since my loan is here in this country, and I have to pay it in usd, would I lose money?
Oh BTW, Bill mentioned about "putrid" colors like the red or emerald. Heeeeeeyyyyyy......let me tell you my car is something similar to "emerald" (ok, they call it jade) and it is absolutely beautiful. One of the best green shades around...I do admit that some of GM's green shades do look awful. But this one's a gem!
Ok experts, a little more help please. Last week I asked for trade in values on my 93 lexus SC 400-Bill hit it right on the nose 9K was Bill's estimate and that was what they offered. With that I just can not part with the SC 400. With that said I am considering trading in my wife's 98 Volvo V70 GLT, Nautic Blue w/ tan leather, 33K miles in great shape, southern CA car and loaded, cold weather pkg. cd changer, roof rack, traction control, sunroof .... estimates please and from Bill I expect nothing but an exact number j/k. THANKS
Oh for those of you wondering if my wife knows of my plan to trade her car the answer is yes--she has become very fond of my (now hers) Toyota Sequoia!!!
I went to college in Columbia, so I know it very well! I live in Jefferson City now, which is only a half hour away so I still go there and hang out all the time. I'm going to St. Louis to do my car dealing, though. Better deals can be had there, from my experience.
I did check with my insurance company about the winshield and I would still have to pay the deductible, so I didn't bother with it, thinking the cost of replacing it would be about the same as the loss I'd take for it as a trade-in.
However, you bring up a good point about selling it in the Columbia area. I ran ads in the Jeff City area with no luck, but I didn't think about Columbia. Maybe I'll try that. Thanks again for you info!!
small world in deed! Since the Butler Auto Auction is open only to dealers, I've only seen the cars while driving by. Most of them look very nice. Are they mostly newer cars, such as under three year old?
Heck, we could have met at Lone Star in Cranberry and had a nice big juicy steak for dinner and a beer! Nice way to end a dreary rainy day
I take it Ford Contours are good, relible cars?. I'll look into them. What do they run $$$? Are the other sedans I mention worthy of consideration (Mazda Protege ES,Chevy Prizm LSi, Ford Escort). It might be wise to have several models to shop around for.
I have a motel in Alexandria Bay N.Y. that we operate in summer. The boss goes to Canada to shop at Wallyworld all the time. Last i knew you couldn't bring a US car to sell in canada unless it is 10 years old. The local big used car dealers go to Canada every week and bring back TONS of late model GM & FORD trucks and they sell a bit cheaper than ones from the US. My friend just got a 99 loaded F-150 4x4 x-cab 14,000 KM for $ 15,999 He sez he can live with the KM spedo. Same truck from USA was 19,000 at Ford dealer Geo......
Trade in time again...97 Chevy 4x4 x-cab,3 door, LS, loaded, no leather, 25,000 miles, Black and pewter....Body & paint excellent, int clean Tires match but worn. Truck in northern ny GMS buyer so i expect low book wholesale.. Any ideas on trade ?? Thanks...Geo
Any idea what the trade-in would be for a 1999 Honda Odyssey LX mini-van with 25000 miles in good condition? I checked Edmunds, KBB, and NADA which are all in the $19500 range.
Hi folks. I'm still 2nd guessing my decision on buying a new Passat wagon and am still looking at other automobiles:)
One car I've always been interested in is an E class wagon. But they skipped two model years, 96 & 97 so it's either a 95 with at least 50k on it or a 98. An independant Mercedes dealer here in the SFO bay area has a couple of 98's with an advertised price of 39,995. One has 21k and the other 32k on it.
I'm wondering what these go for at auction so i can figure how flexible those prices are. At 40k it's way out of my budget but there is some posibility that I could stretch my budget and consider one if I could get it at 35k.
Got a question for ya: (Like who doesn't on this board!) I found a '96 Volvo 850, 55k miles, all options except CD changer, non-turbo, 5-speed (can't believe I found one) with (inexplicably) the 850 R 17'' wheels. Dark green, beige leather. Two things: What's a fair price to offer, and how much do you think the dealer may have picked it up for? Thanks for your help. (It's at a Dodge dealer, and they're asking $15,900.)
There are complications, and you have to change the odometer (Technically I think the car has to be sold as TMU) and there can be warranty issues, especially with foreign cars.
Even so, it can be a good deal I suppose but I woulnt do it.
And, yes, Green is a financially putrid color. However a 99 Emerald Green Vanden Plas is a work of art IMHO. However a Topaz one will be worth $3K more.
Yeah, you're in the same spot I am with my 95 Jaguar Vanden Plas. 121,000 miles, Clear coat worn on the roof, previous accident damage and paintwork all over the place.
But it runs great, has been super reliable, etc... And I've had it since college and I am in love with the car. For the $7,500-8,500 or so that it's worth wholesale, there's no way in hell i'd ever sell it! It's my "baby" and I'll keep it till it falls apart (Which, the way it is going, may never happen!)
So let's see on the V70... Hmmm... actually a good color for those, if it's clean... I think its worth about $19,000 or so wholesale. The wagons do have stronger resale than the sedans, quite a bit stronger.
OK.. this assumes nice car in good color no paintwork etc...
Hmm, you ought to be able to find one for $35K if you shop hard With miles in the 35-40K range. They seem to be $32K or so cars at the auction. but not one with 21K on the clock. those will do $35K wholesale in a good color...
Hope this helps, and it's a GREAT car, Carmella Soprano drives a Brilliant Silver one

$30K is a good deal on the car. No regrets at that price.

I have an idea...
How about a Ford Contour? 97 or so? Avoid the 95s.. but the newer ones are nice cars! And man are they cheap!
Bill
I think that, if clean, it's a $5,000 or so car.. give or take $500 or so...
Hope this helps!
Bill
98 S70s are nice cars.. the T5 is a blast. But sticks are not common. At all.
And these are dealer-only auctions, and you do have to pay for the car, in full, that day.
Also, don't worry.. my wife is much worse when it comes to cars.. she keeps smashing up expensive ones!
Bill
Smashed RX300...
Trade-In ought to be about $7,500 or so... Selling it privately.. I think it ought to be easily sold at $9,500 or so.
Hope this helps!
Bill
Also, bear in mind what they might be pricing those H6s at....
Bill
Try for $31K. Trust me on this

But more than 8% or so have BEEN on the net!
Bill
As a trade-in, current wholesale on it is about $6,000-6,500 or so.
So I'd say it's gotta be worth $8K-9K retail...
Hope this helps!
Bill
see if that warranty of yours is transferrable, if not, cancel it and take the cash!
