I live in Chicago area. Currently have two cars I want to sell or trade. First, a 1995 Nissan Maxima SE, Black with tan leather, 85K miles, sunroof, auto, auto a/c, power windows, locks, alarm, exterior: never in accident, does have door dings and bumper scrapes, interior is excellent (no kids, no pets, no smoking). Have replaced tires, starter, battery, all struts. Was dealer serviced till 60K then just regular oil changes. Everything works. The car has been so reliable I may sell to my niece instead of trading in on new car. Next, I have a 1999 BMW 528 with 21K. This car is black with black leather. Automatic (not steptronic), Sport package and wheels, navigation pkg, xenon lights, sunroof, rear electric window shade, side window shades, Cd changer. This car has street appeal. Ext, int is excellent. Car is garaged in winter. I may trade this car but would prefer to sell outright now and replace with a sports car/ convertible later. I have been lurking on this board for months. This is one of my favorite threads, thanks for all your help. By the way, I lived in Orlando area from 86' till 97'. Very familiar with area dealerships. Most of my immediate family still lives there. I travel there regularly. I miss the year round golf. Dave.

Ok Bill-I've been following this site for a while and I think (hope) you might be able to help me. I've already got a 1999 XJ8, and was thinking about the x-type, but my wife's not too gung ho about the size, so I'm looking at some used XJ8's. Here's one that I saw last weekend-BRG/oatmeal, harmon kardon 6disc, no heated seats, 21,200miles, looks very clean-no paintwork, bodywork, etc. It's a local (lincoln)dealer who got the car at auction, asking 40k, but I worked him down to 37k. I've had my mechanic check it out, and he said buy it. I told the guy I'd think about it a little more over the weekend and give him a call on monday with an answer. My question is, it just seems too good to be true (jag's don't really have great market value over here, outside washington D.C., and he's had the car for about 1.5 months so I'm not worrying about it getting sold). But reading your posts on the 1998 XJ8's selling for 30-32,000, I'm now not sure if I brought him down to a good price, although according to kbb wholesale, I think I'm getting a good deal. Also-carfax looks good, clean title. I just don't know if it's smart to buy it used. What are your thoughts on the price? Do you think I can do immensely better? Thanks!-Shehzad

Based on reading your Town Hall profile, you have taken the plunge and now have your new car dealership...although I can not find the posting wherein the information was disclosed. Is your franchise the elegant, sumptuous, luxurious Jaguar? Congratulations.
And now for a very important question: How did you get the flag of Norway to display by your name? Carl

Now that I'm subscribing to this board, I can see how many questions you get. You have a tremendous amount of patience. I, for one, (and I'm sure everyone else does as well) appreciate it.

Anyway, yeah, I even told myself that I wouldn't buy a new car again. The initial depreciation is just too much. Unfortunately, I think the car industry has been in a funk and they are just now getting back on track and producing cars that really appeal to me.

For the life of me, I can't think of anything made in the past 4 years or so that I would really like to have (and falls in around the $20K price range with low miles).

Granted, I could stand to go a little higher, but not much, and I hate to spend $30K on a USED car. Its just not in my nature I guess.

I definitely agree with you about the CL-S, but, right now, I think its the most bang for the buck out there (putting styling aside and considering the 15 second quarter mile performance and power leather heated seats). I almost purchased a used '97 3.0 CL for about $15K, but (i think luckily) I couldn't reach an agreement with the dealer. I think, overall, it would have been more comfortable than my Mazda, but I probably would have regretted the otherwise unworthwhile trade off.

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

What do you think of a used '00 Lincoln LS? Not that I found one, I was just looking through the used car possibilities here at Edmunds. Can the numbers be right? $26k for an '00 LS with about 20K miles? That's $35K new. I mean, I know American cars depreciate fast, but that's incredible. In your opinion, do you think that car will continue dropping at a phenomenal rate, or is the 1st year the worst and then it slows down?

I also was reading about the '98 Audi A4 Quattro.

I don't know, both cars might be in the "unexciting" category. I like the looks of both and the luxury options, but I've never driven either. Ideally, I would like "sporty luxury", but I'd settle for really fast and comfortable.

I didn't know that about NADA (probably not many folks do). That's really disheartening. But I guess it explains the huge discrepency in some cars I've looked up there.

    thanks

    Hey Bill,

I seem to have estabilished that 8500 would be a good wholesale figure for the Monte Carlo but reading some of the recent posts brings up another point about color.

Since mine is kind of a dark green, and of course I live in the south, I am wondering if wholesale value on mine could be more somewhere else - like Chicago? Detroit? NYC? Alaska (ok just kidding)? Since I'm a GM Supplier buyer my price ought to be the same on the new car anyplace so I am wondering if trading in a different city would benefit me. But it would have to be enough to offset the trip.

Also on a related note: What about exporting the car? Do people ever sell used cars to different countries and if so how do you do it? Do they also go for black book or is exporting a different game althgether?

I notcied recently people seem to have those flags next to the user name. How do you get that?
  • dleungnycdleungnyc Member Posts: 41
Its at your user ID config section, if you fill in the country you are from, you will get a corresponding flag, I think.

I just bought 2, 2000 Lincoln LS's, V8's, roof, Sport pack,17' upgrade with Continental's, heated seat's and -- 6 cd in dash-(post april production) ...sticker still on the window of one of them ($39,750)...7,400 miles and 10,120 very nice..and very clean...........I know we have a lot of import buyers that come to this site......But, I do buy and drive them all.....And these my friend, are great vehicle's --- It's a slim, trim vehicle that is quick , quite, fast , and run's on rails....and will run circle's around most on the road.... ---- So, you can tell, I do like them.....And they make a excellent pre- owned purchase.....they are running at the block around that $26,000 to $27,000 range....makes for a great buy for anybody....

    Maybe this will help...

Yep, I'm back to pick your brain. I like to get ya right after auction ;-)

I have a '00 Saab 9-5. Yeah, I know they're not the hottest car at auction. But I've got an incredible lease deal and it really is a great driver's car.

Anyway, one of the ideas I'm always bouncing around is to keep it after lease maturity. Have you been seeing any 9-5's running at auction recently? Mine is the SE sedan with the V6 but I'm looking at how fast they're depreciating in general to get an idea of whether it's worth keeping when the lease is up.

No big rush for the info. Respond when you can. And Thanks! for your insight.

.........If its a 4x2 with a roof, it's going to be in that $18,000/$19,000 range needing - 0 - .....This a has a few litte thing's that will not help it.....it's black -- and the miles are going to slap it down again ( hey, don't be mad at me..I didn't buy it..)....... across the Mason - Dixon line, the vehicle would be worth about $1,000 + or more.. easy...

    I hope this help's

.........Hey, you can never knock a great lease program.....

It surprises me sometimes when people don't take advantage of them....Last year about May...? Volvo was running $399 a month x 36 ..for the S80....with $999 out of pocket....that was a great deal --- But, I guess I was the only one that thought that....l..o..l....

So, the question is how much.....2000's a running in and around that $22,500/$23,500 figure....give our take -- $5,000 either way
    .....Kidding.....
    Maybe this might help....

But, honestly, do you think that same LS will keep depreciating that drastically and end up crossing the block this time next year for, say, $19K? Or will that value level off and maybe only drop a few thousand this year?

I guess its probably tough to tell since the LS seems to be in a class of its own (an American mid-size sport luxury). But how about an educated guess? Would I definitely fare better with a German car?

Just drove 2000 Type S. Liked it quite a bit. Since its a 2000, they quickly offered 25k, no miles on it.listed for $31 and change. What do you think? Also, what has depreciation been like? Thanks.

.......Your best bet with that vehicle, is to find a clean pre-owned...with a 10-12,000 miles or less...under factory warranty....

These are nice car's but the resale value on them has been in a little trouble for a while...and they are plentiful.......right now 2000 S types are going through the auctions in and around that $17,000 / $18,000 range....

    Maybe this will help......

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    .......That's a good question......I wish I knew....

They are a great car...great warranty...people love them...and they have done well with all the long distance road test's ( plus I drove one 4,000 miles ) .....but honestly -- I really can't tell what the value will do in another year.

It's kinda like Volvo's .....I really like those car's....Well built, quality no brain damage etc....and I really think they are sharp looking, with a spoiler and some 17" Ronals....but resale on them is just a little above average.....But, you have to remember...my crystal ball is also in for repair..l...o...l...

    Ahhh... another Orlandoan!

I agree with Terry on the cars.,.. that Maxima ought to do about $5,000 IMO only because you mentioned scuffs and dings...

The BMW is a solid $31K car and I concur here. It's a $28,000-29K car here in O-town with the Black paint/Black guts...

    Hope this helps!

    Sooo.....

Thank god yer leasing it! Umm, from what I have seen that car will be way upside down at Lease end. What was the residual tho?

If you had said "Well I bought it and only put $500 down and financed for 72 Months" I may have had to smack you. haha :)

    Hmm...

You're in good shape on this deal. Here's why. Low Mile Jags are worth a fair whack. And, it's got h/k audio which VERY few Non-VDPs have. It is a very rare option on XJs. I dont love Oatmeal with BRG (Cashmere would be nicer I guess but it beats Charcoal!) but if it's a clean car.. it could do $34K-35K easily at auction. Now, bear in mind, we do make money on used vehicles. So paying $2,500 over cost on a used Jag is like buying a new Lincoln at $500 over invoice. On a car like that the minimum I would take on a fresh one was a $2,500 deal. And I was generally the cheapest place to buy a Jag in North Jersey. So, of course they are making money on you but the salesman isnt going to Paris for a week on you :) BTW, the national average gross profit on a 3-year old Jag sedan at a Jag dealer is about $5,000-6,000.

So at $37K I think you're doing OK when you factor in they probably have another $500 over whatever they paid for it at auction in the car. (Auction fees..transport..detail..etc..)

A low mile 98 is worth $32K, a low mile 2000 is $42K.. Wholesale so you're in the range. I think a quick call to Rosenthal or any of the Other Jag dealers in the area would show that you have a good deal.

Bear in mind that it's high miles that slaughter a Jaguar's Value. Even though a low mile 99 is still worth $33-36K depending on color and such, a 63K mile '99 recently sold for $23K wholesale.

A 1998 with over 70K is worth $18K or so. Big Jump, eh? :)

So, if you like the car as do I... Go for it. you did well! And dont worry about the no heated seats as long as you can live with them, The car still comes with ASC Which is like the old TRAC.

Oh... Not totally mine. I have 20% of a domestic store in South Florida that I will sell out to the other partners next summer.

It's more of something I happened into (We own the property the store is on...)

I'm still looking for the right store but Im being a bit hesitant. Owners are getting a lot less greedy all of a sudden...

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Hehehe.... now you see why I laugh?

I don't get it. I see people beat their heads in to get good deals on some cars and they dont even look at resale value. Like we've seen with the Millenias..

I'd rather spend $24K retail and pick up a 97 XJ6 than drive a new Millenia L, but that's just me!

Speaking of the devil... 96-97 Jaguar XJ6? You can do a nice one in your price range.. hell a 1996 Vanden Plas even!

What about a nice European car??

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Like Terry said, a great buy used. If they do wholesale $26K you ought to be able to find one retail for 28-29K.... which, IMHO, is the only way to buy one. It is a wonderful car to drive, really the best domestic sedan out there by a huge long shot.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Honestly, I doubt it'd make enough difference to really pay. Even FL to NJ for example on a Black/Black Luxury car is perhaps $2,500 or so...

Maybe $500 more in the midwest on your car?

I dont think its worth it.. but I suppose it couldnt hurt to e-mail some dealers in the midwest.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Terry beat me to this one... Yeah, NEVER EVER Buy a new one, always go a year or two old.

That being said I think the Millenia S is quite underrated...

    Bill
  • bretfrazbretfraz Member Posts: 2,021
Yeah, it was a total No Brainer to lease a Saab 9-5. They were givin' them away - - got mine for $300 under invoice, money factor was .00025 (0.6%). I woulda been stupid to not lease that car, although I really wanted an Audi A6 2.7T. But there was No Way I was gonna pay Audi Financial 9% for the privledge of giving them my money.

My residual is around $22,500. I'm hoping I'll be able to snag the car for mid to high teens ($17Kish) when the lease is done. But I'll keep an eye on how fast auction values drop on the 9-5, just in case.

    As always, thanks a million!

Thanks Bill-I'm really appreciative for your help. After reading your post, I was comfortable with the deal and just went ahead and closed the deal and picked up the car this morning. It's lovely. I had already contacted Rosenthal about a used select edition and their prices were running at least 43,000 or so, so when I got this deal I thought I had a good thing going. I never really felt completely comfortable with their used car dept and as such thought it might be better to look around. This lincoln guy gained my trust and told me everything I needed to know upfront. He even told me that if I didn't buy the car it'd go up for auction again--and it really was his honesty that made me decide to buy from him.
On a side note- I really had no idea that there was such a large price difference between jaguars depending on milage. My other 99 has about 65k on it right now, and I bought it new. So, if your value of 23k on it is correct, that means I've lost about 30k in just 2.5 years. I had no idea it's worth that little. I think I'm definitely going to be buying just used luxury cars for now on, as I usually drive at least 25k/year, and keep most of my cars until 200k or so. In recent years, I've just been donating the cars and getting a tax break as the amount I end up deducting is far more than the cars are generally worth on the market, but still, the loss is just too much if I buy new. Thanks again for your help, and let me just say that if all salesmen and dealers were as straightforward as you are, I would have no problem paying a little more to buy a car from you.

    Well,

IMHO the way to go on a Jag is to buy em 2 years old or to Lease em for 25K/year.

The high miles really rip their throats out.. and with some of the subsidised lease deals... it's the way to go. 60% 2-year residual, deduct 15c/mile every mile over 30K up to 50K miles ($3,000) and you see how its the ONLY way to do it...

No way in hell is a 99 with 50K on the clock worth $30-32K right now... :)))

But, run em into the ground... my 95 has 121K on it, My 97 has 56,500 on it and they both run like new. Well, the 99 is a Meteorite XJR and she's gonna stay low miles... but shes at 23K as we speak.

So, now you have 2 cats! Get an XK-E Next!!! :)

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
I have no idea on the Accords other than I keep hearing about how people get em for like $500 over invoice...

On the Ody... seems OK but if it's nice they oughta put a bit more in it IMHO... Still shoot for $21K... the more I look $22K may be a bit optmistic...

And that being said, why not buy a 99 TL if you have to have a Honda? Or a 98 RL? Or some other used car and skip this whole depreciation trap?

My 3 yr.lease on a a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer ends next month and has a purchase price of $17,130. It's a v-8, loaded, and 36K miles (though I'm paying for 45K miles). MSRP was 31K and got a lease price of $28,500. I don't like the new Mountaineers, so may wait till GM has some incentives for the new GMC Envoy. So I was thinking of trying to buy the Mountaineer cheap for now. I've seen values for it ranging from 14-22K. I live in the LA area. What would be decent, reasonable, auction price I could buy it when the lease is up? Seems like I could get it for less than $17,130.

Also, if I do want to buy it, would it be best to deal directly with Ford Credit and not the dealer?

    Thanks!!

If it's a ES...and it's nice --- you are looking at that $4,000 ish figure...

The Accord is 01, brand new. Brentwood, good idea on late model TL or RL, save the depreciation.

.......Depending on the condition of the Ody.....if it's super nice and clean , miles are low.....The dealer would rather have that - than the 01...I'm thinkin' you can still do another $1,000...

    That's a good Idea from Bill.....here's a few more to ponder...Passats, Mazda Millenia or 626 ES, Maxima's,Volvo S70....and now that I'm thinking about it..a Diamante....or a Lincoln LS

Just remember...buy and drive what you like

    Convertible?

Prolly was an XK8 or maybe.. if it was a 2-door coupe/converible with a mesh front grille and hood louvers you saw an XKR...

    370HP.. 389 lb-ft of torque.. 0-60 in 4.9 >:)

I'm on XJR #4. I had a TItanium 98 with Nimbus Grey Leather that I leased for 2 years and turned back in (Wanted to buy it ut it was in a real bad accident and I didnt want it anymore after fixing it.. as we all know that was a car to stay away from!)

Then I bought and sold a 98 Black/Black (Like that one) and now I have a SIlver with Black Interior 99.

There is no better sports sedan in the world...

And the 95-97 6-cyls are starting to get cheap..... :)))

Avoid the 95s.,. but the 96-97s are amazing cars.... (hint hint)

Well, Like Terry said.. she's a $15K SUV at the top of the world pricewise...

So $17K isnt a bad retail price and all... but...

See if they'll take $14K for her...
