White, 5-spd (I think, may be auto, doesn't say on the web site) 84,000 miles. They are asking $10,900, reduced from $12 something. It's been on the lot for a few months. How much should I expect to pay for it? Thanks Terry.
...that you would want to acquire a high mileage Jeep or Jimmy. There's good reason there aren't any similar vehicles for sale nearby, they are money pits. Even if you get a good price on 'em, the odds of even short term reliable, low cost use/ownership are not good. You could get lucky and drive either one for 10-15K miles with no exceptional costs, but these things may be more valubable as organ donors...
Now if you were considering some typically long lived vehicles, you might have a good strategy, but there are just darned few 95 Jimmys, Bravada, or Blazer that last as long as 117K. Ditto for the 97 Jeep at 97...
both vehicles have a habit is losing transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, powertrain control modules, body control modules, etc. at over 100K.
Terry, thanks for the response. I have a much better understanding of this situation now.
If you have a chance, do you know about how much a Honda Civic EX coupe with auto, CD changer and 78K miles might go for at auction? The car was in a minor accident, but still looks excellent. Oh, and its hunter green, if that matters.
This vehicle belonged to the soon-to-be-wife of a friend/co-worker. She decided to trade because the two of them are going to build a house after they get hitched (in 19 days, yikes!), and 2 cars (he drives an IS300) just doesn't cut it. So, she's got a Toyota Tacoma club cab with the TRD off-road option :-)
I have another co-worker who ditched his Jetta for a 2003 Accord. He loves it, but I hate the droopy rear end. Seems like the car hit late middle-age. I think the 2003 coupe is lovely. Of course, if you want to talk about ugly, there's the new Camry...
Hi everyone! Can anyone tell me where to find the book value for a truck? It's a 2000 Ford E350 Cargo Van Cutaway with a 16' box, 5.4 engine, and 84,900 miles. The value guides I've found so far don't list anything beyond an E350 Econoline Van, and the Black Book I looked at earlier starts with an E550. Is there someplace I'm missing? Thanks!
.... $19,0 That's cheap money for a 4wd .. whether they sell it now or they sell it next week, they will sell that ugly dude .. a guy I know in Savannah just bought a new one, paid $500 over MSRP, says they have a waiting list of 55 orders ... so much for the fashion statement ;-))
...... There like the Cayenne's, theres plenty of them rolling around .. the non S model loaded up, with 3/6k are doing "around" the $36/$37ish figure .. the better deal and the better vehicle is an Audi TT 225 ..
..... The miles aren't toooo bad on 'em - If they both check out, no click click in the 4wd, everything works, no I hit a bridge in 99 and no one will ever know, good track records, good historys ... the SLE "should" see the $3,5/$3,900ish .. the Laredo, probably $4,5/$5,0 ... anymore than that, then I would wish them luck at the auction :-)
Gheeeez, I would hose em' down first, send them to their corners and let them think about it first ... !
Was crazy nut's when the new Camry first came out, I thought it was great (that's always a bad sign for me) .. now, ho-hum .. the new ES300 is waaay off sales because of the new style ~~ now let's see how that new 04 Bimmer "5" series does .. cough, hack, sneeze .. what were they thinkin' ..? they can't sell the new "7" .. oh well, not my money.
....... Ok, this is a E350 with a bare frame, box over .. right .? ... looks like a small UPS truck, mid-size mover .. no shelves, cabinets inside the box .. right .? lift gate .?
Probably white (l.o.l) auto, 85k, small V8 .. no I drove over a low bridge hits, no I like driving through the woods and scratching the *#%$ out of the sides, service all done, clean, deep rubber, cold air, shows like 02 with 20k ... then trade side in and around the high $8's, low low $9's .. if it needs stuff, start deducting.
Its 4WD. I don't even consider CR-Vs 2WD (I know they have made them theoretically ), never even seen one around here. It is an auto and has 84,000 miles. Appears to be in good shape but they have reduced the price twice.
Terry, Thanks for your help on pricing my 1990 190E 2.6(needed water pump, A/C charge, power window fix).. I ended up selling it through the paper for $1600. Disclosed the known problems with the car, and think I did ok (better than charitable donation or dealer!). The car looks great--the buyer will probably fix it himself and resell for a nice profit. Thanks again for your help on this.
I have a question that might be interesting for others too. I have 1990 Chevy Lumina with 115000 miles in fair condition. Fair means scratches (some pretty big), broken side mirror, interior is not in a good shape too. It drives fine,no known mechanical problems (everything that was supposed to get fixed - fixed, even aircond. is working. My question is - is it worth to even attempt to trade in this car? I'm saying will I get at least something or nothing. And in general if you have such a car does it make any sense to trade in? I know its better to try to sell privatly, but if you don't want to bother, will you be able to get at least something? $100 or $200? Or dealer in those cases don't take this car in any situations. Thanks, Dmitry
I generally run my domestic sedans until 150k and 10 years old.
If the car is a looker, it gets a $1000 price tag. Otherwise, it gets a $750 or $500 price tag. Huge "For Sale" signs in all the window.
I disclose all known faults. However, I have a sales contract which states "AS IS, WHERE IS - NO WARRANTY."
I park the car near a temp agency or near a laundromat and wait for the calls.
I don't play the "Or best offer" game. I am giving the car away. If you don't want it, I have three other lookers.
I don't spend hours listening to all the problems (i.e., paint chips, slight touch of rust, etc). I tell them if they want a new car, there are a ton of dealers in Chicago that sell them.
One time, I had six people bidding for an '80 Chevy Malibu on my front porch. It looked good but I was tired of fixing it every month. I told everyone to go get their cash and I would take the best offer at 12 NOON paid in cash.
There are a LOT of people looking for cars that run well under $1k. They don't need to be pretty. However, you cannot listen to sob stories. Make them pay cash. If they can't, wait for another person.
I recently sold my 92 lebaron to my mechanic for $500.It was exterior wise in bad shape-needed a new radiator-transmission was slipping-head gaskets were leaking oil-AC was not working and convertible top would go down but not back up plus the top was leaking and fraying. He said he would fix it up and have an extra car.
Based on this experience,I think anything running ( in fact mine was not even running)has some value to someone in the general public-so I'd recommend not going the trade in route but sell it privately disclosing all known faults.
I promise I'll quit being a pest after this. I talked him into selling the big truck, he doesn't need a gas hog and is already buying a diesel beater truck.
1994 Chevy K2500, 7.4L 454 (I'm not impressed, lol), 134k, auto, 4x4, deep in rubber, red/black, gray interior, its loaded up with pwr windows/locks, tow mirrors, captains chairs, am/fm/cass, a/c. Very clean truck for the year and miles. No known mechanical problems, it runs, drives, and looks like an 01.
I'm thinking $7000 in the paper, am I too light? I'd like to get as much as possible out of it. Especially in light of the situation. Putting the ad in this week.
Yes, I am keeping the Corolla, I like that car and love the gas mileage.
Got to disagree with you on the TT 225 vs the Boxster. The Boxster is a much better balanced handling car. The TT's Golf underpinnings really show. I've driven both extensively and the TT just does does not cut it from a handling standpoint. The looks turn me off to.
Thanks for your input Mark. I agree with you but who am I to contradict Terry! lol I did look at the TT on Edmunds but no matter how you put it, it's still an Audi - I don't think I will ever be able to get the old Audi image out of my head. The interior on the Boxster is definitely something that needs to be worked on, but still not a reason not to get it for me. Thanks for the input.
About all the money at retail (not at a Honda dealership) is $6000 for a 96 EX Coupe Civic in the Indiana/Illinois area. Typically with a dealer backed 90 day main systems warranty.
On any given day the sedan will bring about $1000 more, but you don't have the 4 door.
If it is a nice one, being a Civic, most dealers will keep it for resale after trade. Which sometimes will help you get a little more out of it at trade in time given the right dealer.
$3000 to $4500 auction side depending on condition. Wide range due to the old age of the car, it is (or will be soon) a 7 year old car now and there is a wide variance in condition.
That is a relatively easy car for retail road around Graduation time. Get all maintenance and repair records, good detail, deep in rubber. $5500 asking and take anything close to $5000.
...... It's a 90, it's got bumps lumps and some years behind it .. if the air is cold, tires are ok, no "full blown" rust .. then you should see a Nick.
...... Ok we have 80k, we have no-sale green and we have a 2dr .. on the good side, it's an EX, it's an auto .. if the tires are deep, cold air and if it's -Clean- then it might do the $4,5/$5,0 at the block ... down Retail Rd, $6,500 in the paper and $5,5/$6,0 gets a new owner.
..... Thanks for the great description .. it's an LX, we have all the power stuff and abs, the miles and the color might hold this one back a little .. trade side, you might be seeing the high $10's, low $11's depending on the dealer .. down Retail Rd, $13,9 with a great ad, a super detail and all the service records on the front seat .. say "hasta la' vista" at the first $12,5/$13,5 ..
..... Do a little homework on the area ... if all the clowns are asking $9ish for theirs, call them and see how long they have been in the paper .. if they have had the vehicle for 3/4 weeks and they haven't had an offer or even someone looking at it, then that figure won't hunt .. the best figure you can be at is about a ghee whiz Less than the dealers --- don't forget a BIG fat daddy ad, 4/5 liners work best, nice description, when they ask "are you negotiable" -*yes*- I am, but you need to see this puppy, no offers unless you eyeball this beauty first .. my time is very valuable, as is yours, it's worth the trip .... !
Its hard to say what these bad boys are doing......you can't ever find them up here. A Chevy 454 is so rare here in Alaska its crazy, last one I saw for sale recently was a 93 3/4t, ex-cab, base model with 225k on it.......darn thing sold in a week for $7995. That was about 3 months ago and at a used car dealer.
Some things do stupid money here and others (like my Corolla) you can't get a dime for, go figure, land of the moose coin.
I'm guessing (hoping) that this bad boy will bring around $7ish to some punk who wants a big bad truck to lift and have lots of power. Its summer and the A/C is ice cold......time to move this big monster.
I rode the 5 a.m. bus out of town and picked it up last Friday. Got a free breakfast and an early lunch out of the deal and was home by 1:30 p.m. Got invited to a fine turkey dinner by my neighbor Sunday, too.
Anyway, they did the deal for $700 and everybody is happy.
And...about 3 hours after I got back with her new used car my neighbor sold her old junker (an '88 K car with chronic oozing fluids, bad paint and a dangling headliner, busted AC, ashtray full of unfiltered Pall Mall butts, etc.) for $365.
Another neighbor had walked down to check out the Cavalier, but when she found out the junker was for sale she whipped out the cell phone and called her young nephew who needed a car NOW. He came over immediately and bought it with his first paycheck. He knew the names of all the leaking parts and even the order to take stuff apart to replace all the gaskets and some of the seals. Daddy must be a mechanic.
Terry, I find myself considering getting a minivan (yeow!!!). I have the first grand-kid on the way (think pink) and the wife and I want to spoil her already. Anyways, I'm thinking about getting rid of my truck and searching for a used Ody.
First the truck: '95 Ranger STX, X-cab, 4X4, 90K miles, Auto, drk blue, matching LEER cap, Ford bedliner, tow package (never towed), all the options, captains chairs w/pwr lumbar, rear slider, damage report: rear bumper slightly bent at corner (parking lot), otherwise very clean glossy paint, no tears/stains/rust, no smokers or dog in cab, orig owner, new Goodyears last year(courtesy Ford), solid and runs strong, spent life doing light duty (wife drives it mostly), oh yeah... Boston area.
I haven't located the Ody yet but what I'll be looking for is: '01 Ody EX, white/silver/gray, assume w/o nav (what's that add?), 20-30K miles, obviously I'm looking for one with some warranty left, I'd only be considering cream puffs. What about an '00 everything else about the same.
What might the truck bring trade/retail, likewise for an Ody as desribed?
99 CR-V LX, white, 4WD, automatic, 84,000 miles. Dealer is asking $10,900. Been on the lot for a few months (they've reduced their asking price twice). What would be a good offer to make on this one? Thanks a bunch for your help Terry.
I appreciate everyone's input, it was very helpful.
Took both trucks to a shop and had everything checked out. No big surprises, but transfer case in Jimmy making some noise (not thrashing/banging, buuut???) and both had several maintainence needs (water pump, ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.. Wasn't too worried about either needing work, cause I can get parts dirt cheap and don't mind getting dirty rebuilding my own transmision and/or transfer case.
Anyway, took the trucks back to Nucar Connection, hoping for a really good deal. They told me $6,995, as is, NO warranty, No fixes, "take my pick". I about blew my coffee out of my nose! They gave me another offer of $5,995. I laughed and left... ok, RAN!
On the way home, stopped to look at a 94 Blazer at another dealer. I didn't like it, but to make a long story short, I left with a 96 Jeep Cherokee Classic, wht. out, gray cloth in, 84K, 4.0L, auto, 4WD, all pwr, good brakes & rubber, great shape inside and out. Underside showed no signs of leaks, off road use, or scratches from "frame straightening". Needs some front end work, but nothing I can't do on some Saturday. I paid $4K "as is". I hate to say it, but it was an impulse buy, but does it sound like a deal?
Assuming that only things you can fix go wrong that ought to give you some good miles. Did you get the six or the four? Both actually have some merit to off roaders.
I have alos noticed that the 2Dr models are just as desirable as the 4Dr, as long as you have 4WD.
All-in-all a MUCH better choise than the GC or the Blazer/Jimmy for around town errands and such.
Let's start with the first of maybe eight cars that I have to move before the end of the year.

The interior looks brand new. There are a couple of dings on the door but the exterior is in good condition.
60k miles, mostly highway.
This is a corporate lease vehicle. I am going to offer it to employees in a sealed bid auction rather than sending it back to the leasing company (and the auctions). Personally, my gut tells me the opening minimum bid should be $8,700 and it will probably go for $9,500.
Just out of curiosity, have you seen any Saturn IONs? I have noticed zero info about trade value in edmunds, kbb, carpoint, etc. I have a 2003 ION level "2" with automatic, power windows/locks/mirrors, keyless, cruise, CD, air, and 15" alloys. It is in Georgia, is silver-blue and has about 2k miles on it. It stickered for about $16k. I'm only curious because the more I drive it, the more I'm less impressed. It's my 3rd Saturn, so that really surprises me. The steering is not real precise which is bad on tight Atlanta streets and I wish I had bought the ABS. I wonder what it is worth? Any ideas? I may have to put up with it for a couple of years--at least with the 0% APR, all payments will go toward the principal. Thanks.
What's your thought: 2002 Lexus GS300, white, only 12,100 miles. Sitting in dealer's (non-Lexus)lot. They took as a trade. Did discover that it was "rear ended" due to a warranty from repair facility left in glove box. Pushed dealer on this and they "didn't" know of this nor details. Don't know extent but looks okay and drives great. They had sale priced at $34,675. Located in 24018 zipcode (SW VA). What's your thought on what I should max out on an offer? Wifey really adores. The Cherokee Classic I bought for $4K is the 4.0L 6 cyl. It would be my choice anyway, because we MIGHT, OCCASIONALLY, pull a small (Harbor Freight 2000# capacity style) trailer. The truck will never see off road unless our daughter finds it by accident.
I spent a while under the truck today looking to see what needs fixin first Confirmed that tie rod ends are a little loose, but not dangerous, but BJ's feel good. Looks like a tune up, ALL fluids flush/change, thermostat and a belt are all it needs NOW. Front end will be a month or so away as time allows and if it ever QUITS RAINING! Adding a trailer hitch will be a summertime project, about the time my wife will change her mind and want running boards. Hoping it never needs a computer, but knowing I got a good purchase price, will reduce the "pucker factor" a little.
Terry, I forgot to mention the Ranger also has some added custom items, namely chrome step bars, color matching slotted tail light covers, hood deflector, and window rain guards. I assume they don't add anything. Although, they definitely dress the truck up. Mainly, I want to be sure they don't detract value.
Also, another potential Minivan would be an '02 MPV. I seem to find mostly LX's. I would again be looking low mileage (<20K), same colors, most popular options, and a cream puff.
..... >>> I about blew my coffee out of my nose! They gave me another offer of $5,995. I laughed and left... <<<
I almost blew out my own coffee when I read that .l.o.l.. that was funny ..!
Thats ok, they will run those dudes to the auctions this week, get about what I said - minus- the auction fee's, transport, detail .. then say, "Ya know .. we could of sold those to that one dude for his figure and saved $1,000 bucks .. (thank God I passed that economics 101 course) ..
..... Ok ok slow down, I'm getting there .. gheez, I have my knitting classes every other day and I certainly can't miss those ya know ..
99 LX, 4WD, 80kish, auto .. probably have the high $7's, low $8's in it .. lets add a this and that, $9ish .. $9,999/$10,5 should send it packing .. see what happens.
Comments
I forgot to mention that they are located in Wilmington, Delaware (that's 40 miles south of Philadelphia, PA)
Thanks

Yes, I am keeping the Corolla, I like that car and love the gas mileage.
Now the interior is another matter...

On any given day the sedan will bring about $1000 more, but you don't have the 4 door.
If it is a nice one, being a Civic, most dealers will keep it for resale after trade. Which sometimes will help you get a little more out of it at trade in time given the right dealer.

Yep, try the $7 figure (6,950) and see what happens .. I'm guessing you should see $5,5/$6,5 based on what the dealers were giving you on trade ..
Terry
I'm going to try in the 7's and see what happens. All the other trucks of that year/miles are advertised for $9k on up.
I'll let ya know, maybe I can squeeze a bit more out of it, not going to take less than $7k for it though, that'd be silly.
Let me know what goes ...

Another neighbor had walked down to check out the Cavalier, but when she found out the junker was for sale she whipped out the cell phone and called her young nephew who needed a car NOW. Quarter Size star on windshield right above steering wheel. 3 inch crack on windshield in lower left corner.
Deep 4 inch scratch on rear left quater panel from falling ladder.
No bedliner....small/shallow scratches in bed.
Fabric on driver seat looks worn (age appropriate though). All other fabric in like new condition. carpet is like new.
Tires have ~30,000 miles left on them.
Vehicle was rear ended requiring repair of rear quarter panels, F&R bumpber, taillights, and tailgate.
Vehicle was side swiped requiring repair of passenger side dooors and rear fender.
Thanks in advance
I have alos noticed that the 2Dr models are just as desirable as the 4Dr, as long as you have 4WD.
All-in-all a MUCH better choise than the GC or the Blazer/Jimmy for around town errands and such.

This is a corporate lease vehicle. I am going to offer it to employees in a sealed bid auction rather than sending it back to the leasing company (and the auctions). Personally, my gut tells me the opening minimum bid should be $8,700 and it will probably go for $9,500.
Am I in the ball park or am I delusional?
Thanks for any/all advice.

Also, another potential Minivan would be an '02 MPV. I seem to find mostly LX's. I would again be looking low mileage (<20K), same colors, most popular options, and a cream puff.
Thanks again.
(thank God I passed that economics 101 course) ..
but that was a funny story ..
Terry.
99 LX, 4WD, 80kish, auto .. probably have the high $7's, low $8's in it .. lets add a this and that, $9ish .. $9,999/$10,5 should send it packing .. see what happens.
Terry :-)
