Street Walker Red Exterior/Gray Leather Interior
ROFL!!!
$27K? Umm.. suuure.
$20K or so at the auction plus fees, transport, recon.. $23-24K ought to buy it all day long.
BTW.. Damned nice machine and quite scarce.
Figure that's a $9500+ car out at the sale.. once it's run through the shop cleaned..etc.. $11500 is a fair price. If it was yours I would say take no less than that.
Color is no help, cloth is as helpful as a Jackhammer at a Faberge Egg factory.
I'm afraid $2,500is about the money IMO. Maybe upper $2s on a push.
So ask $4,900/bo and grab $4200 or better in the paper.
I don't know what the Knowledgeable Ones are gonna tell you on this car's market value, and I don't care. You shouldn't either.
A Corolla LE with similar equipment, 3 miles on the clock, and a warranty from here until the start of the first Schwarzenegger administration can be had for $14 and change.
I personally wouldn't pay more than $9,5 for that Civic, but I'm sure someone will do $11.
Just 'cuz the market on Hondas is nuts don't mean you have to be.
Sure, the miles are low, but you've got Snow and Salt in PA, them's 4-letter-words.
Ya wanna save money? Here in MI we have '00 and '01 Prizms with automatic and 30k miles going begging at $6...
-M
Thanks for the quick response.
Mathias--
I hear ya about the market on Hondas..... but on the other side of the coin, it will be worth more when she goes to trade it in. Whatever we end up with, will spend most of its life (at least over the next 2 yrs) in the NE Ohio area. (I know... a lot of snow there, too!) I'm looking for something that will last her through the rest of college & then through med school.

Hey Terry - thanks for the info on that Boxster on Ebay few days ago. Anyway, you mentioned that it was a CA298. I saw where you got that from the VIN and was wondering if that means it was put in-service in CA in Feb '98 or am I reading way into VIN's? The ebay site says in service date of 6/03(must be misprint 6/02). Also, if blue is a deduct then I'm in luck because my first choice is blue w/ light gray leather interior! For once God is smiling on me - whispering for me to drive a Boxster!!! lol
If that is true about the VIN, is it true for all vehicles and is there anything else I can tell just by looking at the VIN?
Thanks a ton

What about a 2000 or 2001 Camry with the I4. This may not be as exciting as a Civic but the extra space will serve her better especially for such a long time frame. And Camry 4-cyl are generally bullet-proof. The mileage should be about the same.
Thanks
If an investment of $3k buys you 4 model years of car on top of 15,000 miles, isn't the answer obvious?
Look at it 4 years down the road: Which would you rather have, an '03 that's under powertrain warranty and looks one generation old -- or a '99 that's now eight years old and looks it? Don't you think the difference in value will be more than $3k? Cost-of-money is low; insurance is almost the same; where is the value in a $11+ '99 Civic???
Now you want to save up-front money, that's a different story. Plenty of good cars to be had around $5k; the aforementioned Prizms for our foreign-car friends, or for those of us into something a little porkier -- howze about a '99 Lumina? Ugly as sin, that good Delco AC, decent drivetrain, $4,500 and she's an owner... drive carefully and forego the collision, there's $800/yr saved...
I live in a College town, and the sums asked and paid for 3-4yr-old Hondas/Toyotas boggle my mind.
Opinionatedly yours,
-Mathias
Lets see, the first one was a banker looking for a car for his daughter, he liked it and everything, but never called back after he looked at it.
Second guy is a bit on the strange side, looked at the car, hemmed and hawed, then said he had to think about it, keeps calling me to tell me he's *thinking* about it and wants to know if its still for sale.
The third was a woman who's car was totalled over the winter, she drove the car and liked it, but of course wants to think about it, supposed to call me Friday.
In between all these I got a call from a guy with a heavy accent who wanted to know about the car. He asked me what my price was and I said "sir, the price is listed in the ad" He says "well it says obo" "yes, it does, however I refuse to talk price until you see and drive the car" Him, "well, I make you offer right now, I pay $5000 for the car right now" Me, "um, sir the car books for over $9000, the price listed is what I want for the car" Him, "but it says obo and I pay $5000 for the car right now" Me, "the dealer will give me more, however if you would like to see the car I'd be happy to show it to you, however I'm not going to take $5000 for the car." *click* I just shook my head. I really thought it was one of my car buddies playing a prank, but after looking at the caller ID I don't think it was.
If it doesn't sell before the next payment (july 1st) my ex is going to keep it.
*shaking head* never again, now I know why I trade my vehicles.
Was the laughing based on the price or the color?
I mean... is that like Pimp Gold or Bank Robber Blue
Oh, I forgot to ask a car question:
What would you estimate my '01 Toy Sequoia SR5 2WD, silver, 42K miles, leather seats+trim, chrome wheels, deep in rubber (new Michelins with LC-size), dual air, a couple of dings on the rear bumper (wife loves to drive into stuff
Thanks, and welcome back !
Some time ago, you put a $2.5K value on my Dark Blue auto 90K mi '95 Altima GXE in Oregon. It now has 94K miles, a small dent in the trunk lid (from backing into a hitch on a truck) and a noise coming from the timing chain area. The car still drives well. It had new tires not too long ago. However, I've been told the noise in the timing chain area is not easy to fix. The trunk damage is purely cosmetic - the trunk lid works perfectly and locks easily.
What are my options at this point? I imagine the tradein value is less than $2.5K, but how much less? Would I get more putting it in the paper (even though likely buyers will be worried about the sound)?
Another option I thought of is to sell it to someone for its parts, but how would one go about doing this?
Finally, I could donate it to some charitable organization who could fix it up. Any come to mind? What value do they assign the car?
Lots of questions. What do you think?
Look what the cat drug in ... ~ Bill.
What happened to you ..? they close every bar between here and Portland Maine ..? get thrown out of Baghdad, get your forehead Super Glued to a condom machine ..?
Welcome back for the 15th time .. gheeez.! maybe this time, you will stick around til' the baby get's born .. !
Terry :-))
I guess you would ..!
Considering I pay $37,0 for them .. $33,0 ..? have at it, if you can find one for that, call me, I'll strike you a reader for $36 ...
Terry.
1) If you contribute the car, you can deduct the MARKET value of the car on your taxes but ONLY if you itemize your deductions. I have seen a number of people who get NO benefit drom the donation.
2) The tax benefit is generally only 25% for most people and about 37% at the highest marginal tax rate plus the state rate. If your car is worth $2500, you are talking about a benefit of approximately $625. I bet that you will sell the car in ten minutes for $1,000.
3) Car donations are perceived as an "area of abuse" that will receive "increased scrutiny" by the Internal Revenue Service. I have seen this in tax practitioner newsletters out of the Cincinnati and Chicago offices. I am not saying that you WILL be audited, just that you are facing a greater possibility of being audited. $625 in tax benefits are not worth that experience.
I am not a car person but I am a licensed CPA in both the states of Ohio and Illinois.

Just like in the case above. If he was only going to get a fraction of the value (whether it be market or book) because of the mysterious noise, then he can donate it and claim the value as if it was perfect. Unless the donation letter states "car had a funny noise and cost $xxx to fix" than nobody at the IRS will know.

I'm looking to trade my 1996 Toyota Tercel (base model) in for a 2004 Subaru Forester XT. Any input on trade-in value would be greatly appreciated!
Tranny: Automatic
Mileage: 55,162
2 doors
Color: Sierra Green (outside), gray (inside)
Windshield does have a dink in it, exterior paint/finish is in good shape overall...the interior is in very good shape.
This car is very much a base model..no power windows, door locks, nothing! Does have air though! Yay!
The car did not come with a clock...but I put one in (from the manufacturer) myself.
I did remove the original radio/tape player and installed a Pioneer CD audio system with 4 speakers. I doubt this would help matters much, but thought I'd add it, just in case!
Tires are about a year old. I have kept up with all routine maintenance.
I live about 2 hours south of Chicago in the happy cornfields of IL!

The car is a light brown. The car is in squeeky clean condition and well maintained. Tires are in OK condition. And unbelievably, all of the gadgets actually work.
The car is located in the Chicagoland area.
Well, Terry whaddya think?
I will have to admit that this was the first luxury car that I have ever driven. I don't want to drive it again, though. I am not seeking any close encounters with local constabulary.(g)
Five or six more to go ...
Thinking trade side $2000 plus or minus. A dealer will have to replace the windshield if the ding cannot be properly filled in.
Retail asking side $3999, out the door around $3000. I think you would do much better selling it out yourself. Get the ding in the windshield filled in, $35. Good detail and wax job, $100. All maintenance up to date? Have maintenance records on the seat.
If you really want to trade it in, do NOT even mention the trade until you reach an agreeable price on the new car. Then get ACV on your trade. I am sure you could easily sell it for several hundred dollars more the same day to some relative or friend.

01, SR5, right color .. 2wd, 40k, kinda clean except for the rear dents .. sounds like $23ish, "might" see $24 if it's like new ..

I hope this helps ...

Now is the time to unload this dude, Rwd's don't sell well in the snow season up in Chi-town ... down the street take a hard right, travel another 200ft, then take another hard right, that will be Retail Rd .. $14,9 in the paper and say "See Ya" at $13,5/$14,5 .. miles are stiff and these don't sell especially well, the color is kinda bland, get what you can for this one and fight for the rest on the next one ...
Good luck ...
Terry.
"Usually" folks that have these, take care of them >red paint is oxidized< .. makes me think, is all the service there, air cold, these are Ultra Expensive to have worked on .. compressor work is $3grand and a [non-permissible content removed] to work on ~ just have it checked it out - Close.
-IF- all is well, she might be seeing the $11's on a trade .. "real money" on Retail RD is the $14/$15 range with it needing -0- .. and I mean -0-.
Terry.
In many of your comments, you mention color as (I presume) an important factor. Take two identical-condition-and-equipment samples of something average, say a 2001 Camry LE 4cyl Auto. One's color is "right", and one not. What might the dollar-differential be?
Is color popularity in the used market the same as in the new market? Or are your observations more regional (ie dark colors not good in hot-weather areas)?
You have also mentioned having maintenance records as a plus. I see that in private-party sales. But the few times I've traded (or tried to) instead of selling private-party, the dealers seemed un-interested in our maintenance records. Would that indicate they simply intend to auction it?
Terry.
Thank you for all your input on my 99 Audi A6, the miley one with 97,000 klicks. Since work must come before reading the posts here, I haven't been able to read for a few days, but I wanted to post again to thank you for your help.
One more question, since you hit the car in the $10,0 range on a trade and $13,0 on Retail Rd., how much worse will that get if I wait a year or so and try to sell it then. I don't drive much, maybe 10K a year, so a year from now it will have around 110K. I was hoping to be closer to $15 now, but that looks very unlikely, so I may just be best keeping it for a year at least, or just run it till it dies, or something breaks. And on an Audi, that is always a distinct possibility!
Thanks for all your help again! This is a great service you provide.
Let's say I have a white or a light gold one in Florida and I also have a Dark brown or black .. they white or light color will sell in 3/7 days, the darker color "might" take a month, plus I will own that black one for at least a ghee whiz less ..
Up north, darker colors sell real well, black is a great color and sells fast, even the "left coasters" spend money on the darker colors, so in that area any "good" color sells well.
Nowadays, with the New colors .. the Neptune Orange, the "Crazy Cobalt blues", that screamin' Saturn Yellow color is doing well (#1 selling color now on a Hummer2 is the yellow) .. now the question will be - how well will they do in 20/30 months when the "rage" dries up and folks are tired of them.!?!?
Records become a "mute" point at dealerships .. but on the privates, they do and can make a difference, "shows" the pride of ownership, not a salesman "telling" you .. get my drift.
Terry.

And David, I'm following your advice and having the dink in the windshield filled in on Monday!
Thank you both again!

Let's say that I have a 2000 Grand Caravan and let's say that the market value is legitimately $12K and Father Flanagan tells me that he really needs a GC for his orphan's home. Maybe, I agree to give him the vehicle.
What I would recommend that individual go to a legitimate car appraiser, or a gealership, or Carmax to get a true market valuation of the vehicle and document his/her opinion in writing.
Then, I would have Fr. Flanagan send me a receipt describing the vehicle INCLUDING CONDITION. That way, when the IRS agent comes after you, because they are looking at areas of abuse, you can PROVE the vehicle was worth what you claim.
Just saying so does not satisfy the IRS.
The red on the Saab was RED - I mean really RED!!
