    Hi Terry,

Coming to you from San Francisco. Was looking at a 96 blue ls 400 with most options (gold package, Nak audio, moonroof, memory seats, 6 disc, useless old cell phone, etc.) Car also has an aftermarket audiovox lcd movie screen mounted to the top of the rear roof and a vcr and nintendo in the trunk. Car has 111,000 miles. Dealer is asking 12K because he has the steering completely redone.

What would be a fair price for this car at auction?

    Thanks a bunch!

    I have a '98 Ford Contour SVT
    One owner, 52K miles
Sharp looking black car with rear wing
Every option, including sunroof and 10 disc CD
    New tires and rear brakes

I live in Western Illinois... these cars are pretty rare around here. What do you think?
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
You have two things going against you.
    1. It has a 5 speed manual transmission
    2. It is a Ford Contour.

#1 limits the market to about 15% of the buying public.
#2 is there are tons of Contour's on the market. The SVT is just an option package, it is not really that rare of a car and it does not have a big following as a sporty sedan.

$7000-$7500 retail if the paint and tires are A1 good. $4500 to $5500-ish on trade is about all of it.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
"The SVT is just an option package"

It's an "option package" over a base Contour the same way the Cobra is an "option package" over a base Mustang. The vehicles share a name and little else.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
NOT just an option package. It has guts and handles. Other Contours don't.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
But it's a car with very few fans.

Kinda like the old SHO Taurus.

    Terry,

Could you please let me know the trade-in and private party value of the following Honda CRV? I'm planning to buy a 2003 CRV in Cincinnati, Ohio.

    2000 CRV LX - Red
    Air
    Power Steering, Windows, Door Lock
    Tilt Wheel
    Cruise

    Roof Rack
    Remote Keyless Entry
    100,000 miles - mostly freeway
Very good condition - new tires, brakes, 90,000 service
A few little dings on the hood and side panels, but otherwise sound!

Love the car but want to upgrade and update!

    Thanks,

I currently own a 2001 Mazda Tribute ES-V6 with 36,000 miles in excellent condition. I'm interested in upgrading and was unsure as to what $$ I could expect should I decide to trade it in with a dealer. Also, I'm interested in the 2001 or 2002 GMC Denali and was wondering what a fair/reasonable price from a dealer would be. I had seen one that a local dealer here in NJ was selling a 2001 Denali with 29,000 miles for $33.5K and that seemed high to me. Any/all help is greatly appreciated. I'm also curious what an '01 or '02 Tahoe Z71 or LT may cost. Thanks very much!!

The SVT Contour has a small loyal following. Do a Google and see. (Since Edmunds won't allow other car forum sites to be listed)

Still, would like Terry's opinion on the value of SVT vs regular Contours. Some SVT fans in a club I belong to think their cars are worth $10-15,000.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Ok .. we have a 98 SVT, it's black in color, V6, slider, they come loaded with the leather, abs, we got new rubber and rear stoppers (rears.?) low miles for the year ..

If it's a nice one, cleeean, looks, feels, drives like a 00, no re-paints, no my cigarette blew out of my hand and set the rear seats on fire, no wars with Wal-Mart .. then trade side, in and around the mid to high $5's - low low $6's if it's a "super clean", glows in the dark and needs -0- ..

Down Retail Rd, a great detail, a super nice 5 liner ad in the biggest paper in your area, $8,9 "asking" and $7,5/$8,5 get's a new shifter ..

                          Good luck ...

                             Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Saying a Contour and a SVT is an option package, is like saying that Donnie Osmond and Ozzie Osbourne are related ..

                        Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... I dunno, I have bought a lot of 911 Carrera's and they didn't need new rubber at 14k, unless someone was using the shifter for cross word puzzle ..

                        Terry.
  • eaton53eaton53 Member Posts: 356
That's a bit more realistic. If I got an offer like the one Dkuhajda proposed, it would be the shortest conversation in the history of car dealing, as in turn and walk out the door.

BTW - The car's very nice and I've got a standing offer of $8600 for it, but I like this car and I'm not a very motivated seller... :-)

Tomcat... I don't think they're worth $10 -$15K, but I see do see people asking that. Gotta wonder if they ever sell.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Hey Scott, well you know the drill .. deep in rubber, a great detail, "shows" like a 00, fix the light, it's worth around the high $5's on a trade .. down Retail Rd, $8,9 in the paper and a quick sale should wave bye bye at $7,5/$8,5 ..

                          Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ $8,6 is ALL the Jingle, so if you can get it, grab it .. this way no muss, no fuss, no expense and time trying to sell it yourself ..

Anyone can ask anything they want for anything .. it's the "getting part" thats the tuff part .. 00 SVT's with 25k/30k are worth "around" the mid $9's on trade .. If I was selling one, $12,9 would be the asking price and $11,9/$12,5 would be "Down the road Motors", thats a tuff market in that particular price range, Ton's of competition .. ask $14/$15,0 for one, then you just better go to Home Depot and grab 300lbs of potting soil and make a planter out of it .. will never see it.

                    I hope this helps ...

                            Terry :)

"no expense and time trying to sell it yourself"

Actually, that is selling it myself.... but like I said, I'm not very motivated and at this time $8600 doesn't fall into the "offer I can't refuse" category.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
it isn't going to get better, only decline...now's the time if you want to swap out. You'll only be disappointed if you wait since the value will drop.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... It's your $$ and your vehicle, but keep in mind, this isn't a Ferrari 308 GTS, it's a SVT with a dwindling market, it's summer time and close to College kick-off, so that market is as big as it's going to get .. see, the Car business is the Now business .. in 6/9 months this pup might not be worth $5/$6,0 .. sometimes it's better to put the ego aside and put the cash in the "Hip National Bank" ..

                            Terry.

..... Hello Dan - Dan the Man .. I bet you never heard that one before .l.o.l..

It's a 01 base, we got 16k, so the miles are nice and low - what can I say here, as long as it's not some crazy color and it's clean, then trade side you might be seeing the high $9's, low $10's .. down Retail Rd, $12,5 in the paper and hope you can see $11,5/$11,9 ...

                       Thanks for stopping by ..

Looks like my post was skipped, can you help with below? Thanks.

    Terry or Bill,

    BMW Z3 3.0i
    Silver with red leather.
    38K miles
New rear tires. (Will need to replace front in about 5K miles or so)
Premium package, premium sound and cold weather package. (HK audio, heated/power seats, power roof, heated mirror, wood dash trim, on board computer, etc)
    Manual.

Another one same as above except 39K miles with steptronic (did I spell it right? )

Both in good to excellet condition. (One was in an accident but fixed by the BMWCCA local chapter recommanded body shop and the job was done right, while the other one has a slight paint chip thanks to the I-95 and it's road conditin + big trucks.)

All scheduled services done (and why not when it's free and we get to drive a different loaner each time. :-))

Although, the step is $1000+ option. I don't think the manual/steptronic will make any differnece in prices?

What would be the trade-in/private party sale price? Your opinion please.

oh, and in Richmond, VA area but can travel to Philly, PA if it makes any difference. (Recently moved to VA but hasn't registered to VA yet)

I ended up trading it in on Saturday. I got $5245 for it and bought a 2002 Explorer XLS w/ just under 10k miles.

Ended up quite happy with the deal considering I didn't have the money or time to deal with fixing the 97 or trying to sell it myself.

Ended up with a newer vehicle with 2yrs/26k on the factory warrenty.

    Thanks

I saw you were looking for a 2001 M3 in Indianapolis... I saw one in the Cincinnati paper today. 28K miles, and asking $40,200. Thats pretty close to Indy, assuming you are in that area. I can't give you the link, but if you google Cincinnati Enquirer, and go to their website, you can search for a used car (its a pretty major website they use), and you'll see the ad with a 513 area code.

Disclaimer: I don't know the person selling the car, and have no interest in it. FYI only.

... I do have to admit, it was a wonderful cruise .. we took the 7-day, round trip Glacier Bay Inside Passage Cruise via Vancouver, which is one of my most favorite of cities and goes to Seward, it's really Amazing how big that state really is, now I know about those 300 mile 1 way trips .. I got to see whales, seals, mooses, birds, fish, all the standard stuff, it is beautiful .. :-)

You left out two very important items that Terry will need.

    Automatic or five speed?

Hope it's a 4WD because the 2WD models are much tougher to sell.

    Hi Terry,

What would be a reasonable amount to expect for a 1996 Acura 3.5RL with 148,000 miles? This is the base model (w/o Premium package). Other than having a 6-disc CD changer, everything else is pretty standard stuff.

I have scratches in both the front and rear bumpers. I think it'll take about $300-500 to fix them.

My zipcode is 07310, if you need it. That's Jersey City, New Jersey.

    Thanks for your help,

    Terry,

I have been selling a lot of cars lately. Unloaded the 2001 Grand Prix, the 1996 Grand Caravan and the 1998 Infiniti is on deck and ready to go next week.

    Now to the dogs.

I have three 1999 Ford Taurus SE that I have to dispose of in the coming weeks. The vehicles are all fairly clean and well kept. The exteriors are red or dark blue. None of them have any major body damage. There are a ding or two on the doors.

They have the cruise, power seats but not the sports package. The tires are in good condition.

Believe it or not, all three salesmen want to purchase the vehicles from the company. Generally, in this case, I charge them wholesale Black Book (+/-) mileage adjustment per the black book.

These cars are located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

What are these cars going for at auction and retail?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi guys-
I have a question not about a cars value, but if the following is really the way the system works. A buddy of mine was looking at a 2001 Lincoln LS right off lease. It had low mileage and my buddy was interested. He ran it through Edmunds and got a market price of $19.5... The dealership had it priced at $25,000. When he questioned the salesman he was told that since it was off-lease the dealership had to price it from the residual value of the lease. The salesman also said that if it didn't readily sell, they would send it back to Ford leasing who would then auction it to someone. My buddy was surprised that Ford wouldn't just adjust the price to the market immediately and allow the dealership to sell the car, without the added expense of shipping the car from the dealership to Ford leasing and then the expense of bringing the car to auction.
It didn't make much sense to me either, but I was wondering if this is really what happens if a leasing company initially overestimates how much a car will be worth at the end of the lease. This must happen all the time!

I'm looking to trade in my 99' Volvo S80 T6, 58,000 miles, great condition however it appears computer needs to be replaced because of errant messages and triangle light coming on. Supposedly that is about $1,000. It's Nautical (navy)blue with taupe interior.

How much can I get for it as a trade in in the Boston area?

...... The miles are low, and if it has a good history, no re-paints, good tires, just a nice one, then $9,0 is a good/great price .. most dealers will put the ultra high $7's, low $8's in it ... just make sure you get a Gooood look at it .. if all is well, steal, I mean grab it ..

I'd like your estimate of RWTV for a 99 Saab 9-3 SE 5door hatch, AT, leather, trunk CD changer, hot seats, new touring tires, one small fender dent. And how much would you ask if selling privately?

Edmunds TMV gives only $69 more for SE model over same-equipped S model. Can you hazard a guess as to how come?

    Thanks!
