Can't help on the value, though, I don't see many Audis.
2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport
4.0L 6-cylinder, 5-speed manual transmission
AM/FM cassette, no CD
hard and soft tops
black exterior/gray cloth interior
34k miles
graphite alloys
sound bar (speakers in the roll bar)
no a/c
In generally good condition except one zipper for the soft top side windows is broken and there's one small but noticable burn hole in the driver's seat.
These are separate transactions.
And be glad you're not in MI, where tax is paid on the price of the new car, whether you bring you down payment in the form of a trade-in, cash, or 25 filets de sole...

I'm trying to make the deal quick so if I get $1K from the dealer, I'll be all right with that.
: )
Ok, let's try this again .. this is a 99 "E" class 430 with a "Sport pack", with almost 40k living in Texas .. same stuff, gotta be Xtra clean, no paint work, glow in the dark, no weird experiments in the interior, wheels have to look new, deep rubber, service 110%, yatty yatty yatty .. trade side, in and around that $22/$23 figure .. a trip down Retail Rd, $28,9 in the paper and $26,9/$27,9 sends it off to Longhorn U.
Don't forget to let me know ..!
Terry.
This Caddy will probably "loan" $13,0 at the local bank, so if she can see $10/$11 that would be fair for both .. what are they willing to give her ..?
Terry.
Sounds nice, the GT is way low in miles, auto, if it's nice clean, it's still priced a little too much at $20,9 .. there is bunches of low mile, clean 03 GT's hanging out at the auctions between Miami and Philly, besides you can purchase a new one for around $22ish with all the rebates and such right now .. I paid $17,3 for the twin too it on Tuesday and it sold for $19,5, give this a guy a break at $19,9 and $20,5 would be ALL the $$ ...
Good luck ...
Terry.
Can you please ballpark these for me -- they're ficticious, I'd like to know what I should be interested in... manual transmissions, please, power stuff, no frills like roof/leather/nav:
-1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon, 60k
-1998 Subaru Forester, 60k
-2003 Toyota Matrix FWD, 30k
-dto. Vibe
-VW Golf III, 1995, nice w/ 80k miles
-VW Golf IV, 1999, 60k miles, made in Germany??? (1st digit = W; "West" Germany, remember that one?)
-Saturn SW1, 1998, 60k miles
From where you sit, what's the best deal out there for a runabout hatch or wagon south of, say, $6k cash money?
First football weekend -- home game -- and I have to work at the lab -- and the parking [non-permissible content removed] will be out in force and not understand game-day permits -- sigh.
Have a nice day!

East Lansing, MI
-1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon, 60k .. $6,5ish
-1998 Subaru Forester, 60k .. $7ish
-2003 Toyota Matrix FWD, 30k .. $10/$11ish
-dto. Vibe - around $12ish because of the different option packages
-VW Golf III, 1995, nice w/ 80k miles .. $3ish
-VW Golf IV, 1999, 60k miles, made in Germany??? .. (1st digit = W; "West" Germany, remember that one?) .. $7ish
-Saturn SW1, 1998, 60k miles .. $4ish ..
Money wise, I would say the Saturns .. in Ctown they drop 80/100 at a whack .. 00 L Wagons with 25/30k Lw2's are only doing the $7's ...
.. >> what's the best deal out there for a runabout hatch or wagon south of, say, $6k cash money?
particle bashing on the weekends ..? who's paying for this ..?
Terry.
You are, via fed. taxes. $13,000,000+ operating budget per year.
Part of it from the State.
About 1/2 of what a similar European lab runs on.
And don't worry, I don't get paid overtime, so this weekend's free.
Sorta like your advice here... you see, it all works out in the end.
www.nscl.msu.edu for those who don't scare easily.

Trade side, $22,0 maybe $23,0 based on the barometric pressure and who got lucky last night .. $30,0 on the retail side ..? I know the "books" show that, but that's a Non reality price .. dealers are buying 18/22k ones for $26 and getting $29/$30ish for those .. on a good day, you need to be ready to accept $25/$26ish on the retail side for yours ..
Good luck and let me know ..!
Terry.
I'm not gonna disagree with Terry here.
But I've got two things to add.
Firstly, this is a really rare, weird car. So it's worth what someone will pay for it... that's always true, but on a '99 Camry LE, it's kind of agreed and understood what the $$ are.
I know that a friend of mine from work leased an S4 back in '01 (I think), got into money trouble via divorce, and then wrecked the silly thing on top of everything else. ~$20k worth of damage. Then he sold it, perfectly repaired and repainted, with <10k miles, to an import car specialist in Gd Rapids, MI, who gave him ~$40k for it... this was a car that stickered at -- and sold for -- $46 or so. This didn't make any sense to me, but I know it's true... God knows my buddy didn't have the $$$ to make up the difference and get out of his lease... I don't know what that means to your car's value, but these ARE funny... so I guess what I'm saying is you need to shop this one around a bit. But I would also think that the market on these has gotten a lot firmer over the last coupla years.
The "meat cleaver" -- that's REALLY not nice, Terry -- doesn't hold it back much in terms of what some shmoe will pay for it, but it'll increase the time it takes to find the right shmoe... so I would think it impacts trade-in value far more than street price. Of course, I also think anyone buying these with an auto should be buying a Buick instead, but what do I know...
Hottest car I ever drove, pure magic... loved it.
Good luck, let us know...
-Mathias
Thanks for the advice. It wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, but I appreciate the insight into reality. Wow, this car is soft!!!!! I would thought that a loaded AWD German sports car would have held it's value a little better, but I guess that's the market right now. I'm actually in southern New Hampshire (Nashua 03060), not Maine, so the tax thing is a non-issue (we don't have sales tax here). I was trying to sell it as I could use a truck for my business (I am self employed) and a truck would come in handy, plus there are nice tax breaks. I may end up just keeping it though.
New question: If I keep the Audi, we may get rid of my wife's 325I. It's a 1994 white 325I sedan with 120k miles. It's got leather, heated seats, traction control, automatic trans. It was paid off long ago so it may make more sense to lose this one. Just replaced radiator, water-pump, tires, hoses, belts, valve-cover-gaskets, thermostat, and I think that's it, about two weeks ago. Car runs good, average shape body and interior. It was in a minor front end accident about a year ago but everything was fixed and/or replaced that got damaged (about $2500 in damages) What is this one looking like on the market right now?
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry for the miss .. let's see here, it's a 00 SE, we have the Bose, bun warmers, leather, slider, miles are on the low side, ooop's it's a handshaker and it's no sale green in sleapless in Seattle .. trade side, maybe the high $12's, maybe lost their mind and have the low low $13's in it, plus the pack and a this and that, so figure maybe high $13's .. should be had for the $15,9ish, maybe less, Mathias might pay them $16,9 he loves those meat clevers ..

Just Awakened by the Pager :grr:
2003 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L 5-speed manual
15,000 miles
Black exterior with charcoal leather interior
Dual-zone climate control, power/heated seats, 6-disc changer, sunroof, rear spoiler, fog lights, tinted windows, alloys, and auto-dimming mirror with compass.
Car is immaculate inside and out.
Never been wrecked and I have the service records for the oil changes and tire rotations. All accessories (fog lights, mirror, etc were installed by the dealer so they are covered under warranty.
Car is located in Atlanta suburbs.
Thinking private party is the best way to go versus trading at a dealer for a Forester or Element.
And since we will have a Forester or Element we will no longer need a truck so could you give me private party/trade on this:
1997 (first year of newer body-style) Dodge Dakota club cab
3.9L V6 with manual tranny
70,000 miles
Black exterior with gray cloth interior
Fog lights, AC, bed liner, alloy wheels, manual windows and mirrors
Excellent condition inside and above average outside with a few minor scratches
New tires and brakes
The Sandman :-)
I absolutely hate parting with the Accord but it makes sense to part with it as our other cars are sedans and we can kill 2 birds with one stone by getting rid of the truck and the Accord for the Element or Forester.
A big reason why we got the Sentra in May was to keep our car expenses down and just get a economy car for my 20 mile commute. Better to save for the future.
The Sandman :-)
I'm looking at this car, and I am hoping that you could let me know what is the price for a private party and trade in value for the car:
2000 Jetta GLX auto
~80k miles
6CD Changer
Silver with black leather interior
Car is in good condition (normal wear and tear), with a couple of broken things (glove box hinge, missing side mirror screw?). It's a one owner vehicle, clean carfax title, and is located in Philadelphia suburbs area.
Thanks!
But regardless, it's a fine car; if you really like the Jetta, I doubt a Corolla would do it for you.
It's not gonna be as reliable as a Toyota, but it *should* not be too bad. What people often don't realize is that bad average reliability usually means great reliability for most of the cars, and a goodly number of clunkers thrown in.
As far as value: You're being offered TMV trade-in cuz the "books" (kbb et al) don't subtract nearly enough $$ for high miles. Try trading this puppy in half a year from now and see what happens. Terry will tell you what it's worth.
I'd have this car looked at carefully for accident damage because of the mirror screw; that's unusual.
As far as longevity, there's no reason that a VR6 wouldn't run for a looong time, VW builds some stout drive trains. Thing to watch out for: change the timing belt sooner rather than later; if it breaks, you just bought a new $5-6k engine. Almost all VWs today are interference engines and belt-driven.
The real problems with this car, if any, are going to be in the electrical system. But this ain't no Hyundai, either, shouldn't be too bad.
It would be good to haven an experienced VW mechanic or a dealership with competent mechanics that you can trust. Klaus, who's worked on VWs since the 70s is going to be a lot better at this than Charlie, who mostly works on Hondas and will learn on your nickel.
Color is good anywhere, inside and out. No discount for silver...
VWs are sky-high used, so you might want to consider a new one with -0- miles. The 1.8T is nice..
This has been rehashed many times without a firm conclusion on these boards, but I think we can all agree that buying used does not always save you money.. VWs are among the cars where it's really worth thinking about buying new. At least see if you can't get the full maintenance history for this thing.
Good luck,
-Mathias

Terry.
Let's say it's way deep in round things, service is 100%+, no-repaints, no K-mart commercials, just a nice, clean high miler with a few broken knobs .. dealer "might" have the high $7's or $8ish in it .. down Retail Rd, $9,900 would be all of it, no-body is breakin' down the doors for GLX's with hi miles, especially since there is bunches of them going through the auctions with 15/30k ...
Good luck ...
Terry.
But I know he was leasing the S4, and then he couldn't afford it after the divorce... heck, he couldn't afford it BEFORE the divorce... and then it was gone... he offered it to me for $42 (payoff... yeah, right)... dunno what it went for new, but I was stunned when he said he'd sold it... for $40 or so... to an import dealer. Then he leased a Cherokee (and put a sunroof and special wheels on it.. he doesn't make a lot of sense ususally) until he couldn't afford THAT anymore.
Heck, now he's driving a '93 Corolla that I sold him in January with 180k on the clock... now he's over 200k... His other car is an 86 Ranger 4x4... *rolled* once....
I don't believe in Santa Claus either... but every once in a while, stuff happens... keep in mind, this was a few months after the S4 came out... what do I know...

Mathias,
I just like the Jetta styling inside and out
However, I have to admit I'm a bit worried about the reliability.. your explanation did calm me a bit
You mentioned about changing the timing belt... the mechanic that checked the car said that the timing belt should be changed at 105k miles, according to VW manual I guess. Are you suggesting that I should change it right away if I decide to buy the car?
Terry,
the owner's office is around 50 miles away from her house... so the car has seen the road quite a bit
The owner didn't want to budge from $9k, and my last offer was $8.5k... so we'll see
Btw, I just test drove a new Accord EX V6 earlier... though I don't really like the exterior styling, I was impressed by the interior. Not sure if I should choose it instead of the Jetta...
Please let me know trade in and private sale numbers.
Thanks,
Mark
I tried to look up whether the VR6 is an interference design, but I didn't find it. I'm pretty sure it is, since it's a fairly complex engines, and most VW engines are not freewheeling.
Therefore, it's a good idea to be conservative on belt changes.
I just picked up a used-car guide in the old country, issued by ADAC, the German equivalent of AAA. They say that (i) the Golf/Jetta is a sound and solid car that will last a long time -- (ii) that the reliability is mid-pack, no better, no worse -- (iii) that all engines can be recommended; all depends on how much ooomph vs. how much gas ($5/gal!!!) -- (iv) that timing-belt change intervals are confusing in that they've been changed several times, so forget the manual and ask your dealer, they know the latest information.
Oh yeah, and (v) that the timing belts "occasionally" let loose early. Which is ok, maybe, if you live in Oberpfaffenhofen and can just track down Guenter at the junk yard who can call around and find you a 50k mile VR6 on the cheap... in the US of A, you'll be paying handsomely for the replacement... so from that little tidbit alone, I'd be conservative and change at 80-90 rather than 105. OTOH, this is a car that's seen a lot of freeway use, so maybe the hours are low enough you don't have to worry about it.
Hey, the 2.0 4cyl is cheap, fast enough, and replacement parts are everywhere... food for thought... and get the stick for the full German experience... heck, my mom AND grandma drive manual transmissions.....
Good luck,
-Mathias
1) 1999 Nissan Maxima SE, dark silver, 5 speed (yeah, I know), cloth, roof, 42,000 miles. Recent tires, some scratches on the rear fender (about a $250 fix). clean inside, runs nice.
2) 1999 Nissan Quest SE, silver/gray cloth, loaded up (new msrp was 26,500) including moonroof, alloys, etc. Recent tires, new battery, 1 owner, service records, real clean (just a few door dings). 41,000 miles.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Anywho, I could use some insight on few vehicles. These are for the younguns. They may need to do some car juggling soon.
97 Neon Std, 4dr, dark green, 36K, auto, AC, no pwr options, recently side swiped but good repair work, good condition.
95 Intrepid Std, white, 125K, auto, PW, PL, not much else, overall good condition.
97 Civic EX, 4dr, blk, 46K, handshaker, all the standard pwr stuff w/slider, normal dings and scratches, good condition.
97 Grand Am SE, 2dr, blk, 48K, V6, auto, moon, plks, otherwise standard pwr stuff, minor fender bender on right front, everthing else good condition.
First (Neon) is possible buy, other three are possible sell. What say you?
Hope all had a great Labor Day.. and back to the labor tomorrow ;-)
But anyway ...
97 Neon Std, 4dr, dark green, 36K, auto, AC, no pwr options, recently side swiped but good repair work, good condition. ~~ dealer might have $2ish in it, $3,5 or less would be just about all of it, low miles, but no stuff, strippy and it's a handshaker ..
95 Intrepid Std, white, 125K, auto, PW, PL, not much else, overall good condition. ~~ miles miles miles, better have new tires, battery, cold air, I dunno, ask $1,9 and see what you can get ..
97 Civic EX, 4dr, blk, 46K, handshaker, all the standard pwr stuff w/slider, normal dings and scratches, good condition. ~~ miles are low for the year, no help with the handshaker, 4dr big help, $7,9 in the paper and grab $6,5/$7,5 ..
97 Grand Am SE, 2dr, blk, 48K, V6, auto, moon, plks, otherwise standard pwr stuff, minor fender bender on right front, everything else good condition. ~~ miles are low for the year, V6, auto, slider, 2dr doesn't help, $4,9 on the street and $3,5/$4,5 sends it off to college ..
The only way to get Real $$ for a vehicle if you are going to sell it yourself is, clean em' up, do the right service and/or parts, tires, all the right basics and get the ego out of the way, if you get a fair offer, take it .. the funny thing about private sales is, a potential buyer will nod and say it's nice, but be down the road in a heartbeat and will spend a little more $$ for a cleaner vehicle, "most times" they are afraid to hurt a private sellers feelings - they save all that abuse for a dealer .l.o.l.. ..
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
Let me know ...
