But the Midwest in general has a pretty stable price base with some specific market niches for some vehicles.

Unless there is a big market shift due to the big rebated Ford is giving on the 2003's, you should be in the right ballpark. Get a super detail, make sure the tires are deep in rubber, make sure you have maintenance records ready and available, all for anyone looking at the truck. One last thing, don't let your ego get in the way, but make sure you give the appearance of being confident that the truck is in good A1 condition (as long as it really is in that condition). Another last thing, make sure people can get a hold of you. Give more than one phone number (cell phone or pager), and have a good very short message on your machine indicating how they can quickly get a hold of you.

I cannot ever remember seeing a VP used.
Unless the dealer was smoking something when he priced it, I would say he is asking somewhere around $8500-8900 for it. Were it the first owners selling it, $7000 should be a relatively quick out the door price.

Here in red-neck-ville with the buy-here-pay-here crowd, wouldn't even consider buying a car like that. With the exception of a certain trailer park crowd trying to keep up with the Joneses who now are driving well used luxury Lexus or BMW (they use to drive well used Caddies), rarely ever do anything from Honda or Toyota. Mostly due to the cost of the vehicles that are in decent shape, but by the time they are in the sub $5000 retail range, they are junk to try and warranty.

isellhondas could probably give you a closer idea.

...... I got about 12 seconds so this will be fast .. 97 Accord, auto, crankers, 110k, no rust, a Itsy bitsy kiss here and there, service is 110%, cold air, looks like a 00 without the power .. trade side, in and around the the $3ish figure, could maybe be worth $3,5 at the auction in big D .... it will see $5ish on the retail side if needs -0- ...

Gotta go ...

Thanks...this isn't a "buy here/pay here" lot. Guy had just traded the '99 Civic VP in on a new Sonata at the Hyundai dealership. I was there looking at a '99 Corolla (which needed some minor body work, brakes). They wanted $7K for the Corolla, as is. When I saw the deal going down for the Civic, I asked the owner what they were offering on the trade side...he said $6,500. I told him I'd give him $7K cash. Dealer said they didn't mind if it was just a transaction between the owner and me.

I thought about $7K since it looks to need nothing. That's what I offered him. He accepted. I gave him the $300 I had in my wallet with the understanding I wanted my mechanic to check it out (which he's doing today). If it checks out, I'll buy it.

I'm just looking for something reliable for the winter. My "other car" is an RX8, which will spend most of the winter in my garage.

I looked at some cars at the independent "in town" corner car lots and was relatively unimpressed (don't know what a "buy here/pay here" lot looks like) with the cars. Outside of a "detail" they did, there was nothing at those places that looked like it would last more than 10K miles without some major work.

Thanks for your help.

You did fine. Nothing wrong with a VP except they don't move real fast because of no power windows, locks and cruise. People are pretty spoiled.

But, it's a great car and it'll last you forever. Timing belt is good until 105,000 miles.
• graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,120
Isell..thanks.

It is amazing how spoiled we've become...."what?....you mean I have to crank the windows?" I can recall when an FM radio was an option as well as A/C.

I've spent about 3 weeks looking at everything that would seem to be of interest as a 2nd car....private owners...neighborhood "car lots"...new car dealers. Got a real education since it's been 20 years since I've shopped for a used car. I looked at everything from late 80s cars to 2000 LeSabres....decent used cars (emphasis on "decent") seem to be the sole province of the japanese brands. 4,5,6 year old Chevies, Fords, Chryslers seem to show an abnormal amount of wear compared to the Toyotas and Hondas with the same mileage.

Independent lots seem to focus on American marks. It's difficult to find a good, less than $10K used Honda/Toyota.

Found a ton of "tuner" Civics, however. There's a real Civic underground for the person who wants to customize their rides (as well as some wildly unrealistic expectations what their customization is worth).

Just a real quick question...the "maintenance" part of Edmunds states the timing belt in the '99 Civic should be replaced at 60K miles. Are they wrong?

it wil take a while, but you won't regret saving your rx-8 from winters. you won't believe how great the paint will still look years later, just by not driving it in the winter. the older it gets, the greater the difference from the everyday driver. if you don't know already, i'm sure you can find out how maintain a part timer.
my 12 year old stang gets turned over a couple of times between oct,nov and may, june. not started, though.

Hi Terry. Can you give me the retail price for this car with 18000 miles, 6 speed, black inte., black ext., black soft top, leather int. and all other options? It's located in Sacramento, CA. I'm buying this from a friend. Would 30k be right for both parties?

Thanks,

....... Miles are low for the year, color is ho-hum, it's a AWD V8, we got a slider and all the stuff, it being a Limited - oh yeah and you say it's clean, that means no 350lb drivers, no Wal-mart attacks, no I let my 91yr old Grand Ma back-up and take the drivers door off ... trade side, in and around high $9's, low $10's ..

Take a little walk down Retail Rd, super detail (not a run through the car wash) .. great ad in the largest newspaper in your area, $12,900 "asking" and let one of the cuties from the UCLA marching band take it home for $11,5/$12,5 ...

Thanks for stopping by ..

It sounds like my sister-in-law's finally convinced her el-cheapo husband to replace their 150k mile '92 Sentra. The candidates:

#1-
2001 Subaru Outback Wagon
48k miles
White w/ tan cloth guts
4 cyl. w/ a handshaker (I know)
No roof but CD/cassette PW PL and cruise.
Deep in rubber, nicely detailed

#2-
2001 Saturn LW300 Wagon
43k miles
V6, Auto
Maroon w/ tan cloth
CD, no roof (like the Subie)
PW / PL / cruise

Both in Salt Lake City.

Both are at the same dealer and are pretty comparably equipped and ready to go. What do you think the dealer has in them?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Terry, don't you know the rules? You're not allowed days off! :-)
Anyway, here's a copy/paste from the 8th.

This one is for my dad. 2001 Toyota Tacoma extended cab 4x2, 4 cyl 5 speed. Forest green over beige cloth, air, CD, bedliner, chrome package, and not much else. 48,000 miles in MA. Could use tires and has a nice little indentation (about the size of an 8x11 piece of paper and an inch or so deep) behind the driver's door. What says the oracle as far as trade? He's planning on getting a 2004 Tacoma just like it. I have no idea why. This is the guy who, when I was in high school, had an '86 Mazda B2000 with 212,000 miles and refused to part with it until the frame literally broke in half going over a rail crossing (New England winters, don't ya know.)

Also, if they were gonna retail mom's car (which they might), what should they ask? '95 Accord LX sedan, auto. Blue over gray cloth, 150k miles, and the body is, well, not that great (mom's frankly not a very good driver; guess who put the dent in the truck?) Various scratches and dings along with the dreaded Honda Fender Rust (tm). Mechanically it's all there, though; tires within the last year. They'd probably unload it on a high school kid or someone looking for a winter beater. Whaddya think?

Thanks.

Greetings all. Just wanted to know if you think this is a good deal:
2001.5 Passat GLX
28,500 Miles
Silver/Blue Exterior - Black Leather
$19,599
Just sold my Camry (thank God!) and the wife and I really like the Passat. Questions:
1. On the GLX is Premium gasoline recommended or required?
2. Does the CD player/changer come standard with the GLX (This one has neither)?
3. Should I have any concerns with the 01.5 or should I look for an 02?

Thanks for the assistance.

...... It's a 99, right color in and out, single slider, miles are fine for the year, cold pack and 18" kickers ..

If the service is 110%, no experiments in the Boston traffic, no let's play switch blade on the seats and a few maybe kisses here and there ... dealer probably has (3rd seat, CPO.?) $14ish in it, could waddle towards $15,0 ... I got a funny feelin' he might say bye bye at $15,9/$16,5 especially if it's been there for awhile ...

oh, by the way, let me know.

Terry. It's for my little brother so I'll pass the info along. It's not CPO, no 3rd seat, not at LR dealer though they claim "fully serviced" by them.

Those 18" donuts look expensive to replace when they're ready!!

Terry...again..."you 'da man"....thanks for your help! BTW...if you're "backed-up" then I would go to the drug store...they've got "stuff" there that can help...;-)

explorer....'ya know...I've never been one to "baby" a car...I just like this RX8 so much that I don't want to subject it to winter driving. Aside from the toll salt, sand and gravel takes on a car when driving in winter climes, it was going to cost me a a grand or two to get snows and rims for a sports car with 18" tires. Kind of overboard to buy one car to save another, but since most of my driving is to and from the airport, I've had some nasty surprises waiting for me when I go to the "long term airport parking lot" when returning from business trips. Those surprises happened to some pretty nice new cars that I paid a lot of money for, too.

Isellhondas...I'm hoping for a long term relationship with the Civic VP. I expect it will travel another 100K miles (in addition to the 60K already on it) while serving me. From what I've read, even Hondas that have been abused last a long time.

Park at Thrifty.. They will valet you to the door, and have your car running and warmed up when you return.. I don't fly a lot, but I'm pretty sure their prices are competitive.. I wouldn't leave the RX-8 with them, but if you are driving the Civic....

It's next to impossible for me to fly out of CVG anymore. Since you are in the area, you know that Delta has taken over the airport and that fares are at least ~60% higher than anywhere else.

I usually fly out of DAY. Parking there is less than good, however.

I'm a "Million Miler" with Delta. I quit flying them a couple of years ago given what they've done to the Cincinnati market. There are a ton of Delta Frequent Flyers who I know that used to fly Delta exclusively that won't fly them anymore. Seems like CVG is little more than a "stop over" point. At least in Dayton, I can get a half way decent fare without flying Delta (and they wonder why they are losing millions of dollars).

Rant over....back to regularly scheduled trade in values.

CVG made a deal with the devil and all Cincinnatians they have to live with it.

In all the times I have travelled to Cincinnati, I have never flown into CVG. I generally fly into CMH or SDF (Louisville) because Southwest has cheap flights into those airports. I have also used IND on occasions but that does not make sense out of Chicago. Amtrak and Greyhound are not an option.

Recently, I have been hitching rides on a OTR truck when we have a trailer load heading into Southern Ohio.
• graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,120
Agreed!

Delta had a good thing going in Cincinnati. As you said, Cincy sold its sole to the devil (Delta) for the hub. Delta turned right around and kicked it's 2nd largest customer base (to Atlanta) right in the [non-permissible content removed] as a "thank you".

I'll go out of my way to use every other airline and every other airport regionally (Indy, Dayton, Lexington, etc) so I don't have to fly Delta. Delta keeps telling me that I'm in the top 1% of their best customers. They talk nice to me and then treat me like garbage.

I'm not alone. We've made quite a stink to Delta, but they don't listen to their best customers. We have no choice to sacrifice a little inconvenience to fly with carries who want our business and treat us like they want us.

Sorry, it's a major sore spot with me. I'll settle down and quit my rants.

What is the real world value for this trade-in?

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4DR 4WD 4.0L I6.
Selec-trac (full time 4wd). Auto. PW-PM-PL.
Overhead console trip computer compass.
Cloth buckets. Tilt Cruise. AM-FM-CD-Cass.
Tint. Roof rack. Factory tow. Regular brakes.
74,000 mi. White. Neat condition and running well.
Tires are at 3 to 4/32", though.
Denver region. There's some snow in the mountains already...

Deal would be to buy a 1996 Toyota Tacoma Xcab 2WD 72,000 miles, dealer lot price at $8995.

Terry;

You know how you’re always saying “let me know?” Well, I’m letting you know that I and my 2001 Audi A4 have had a horrible six weeks. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not holding your feet to the fire (you said it would be tough), I’m just keeping you informed. Here’s what you said.

**Miles aren't going to help this one, tall tall tall, and of course we have the fake interior which is always a crowd pleaser .. sounds nice and clean though, if the service is all there, deep sneakers, trade side in and around the $15's depending on the dealer .. down Retail Rd ~ a super detail, a super ad, $18,9 "asking" and $17,5/$18,5 sends it off to DC ..**

So far I’ve spent $400 on a full detail and ads and no one has even taken a nibble. Not at $18,9 or $17,9 or $17K or $16K. In discussions with dealers, the most I wound up with for a trade-in was $13,500, and that only after a couple of back-and-forths. Some of them have told me they’re worth more with a manual, and everyone wants silver or black. I put it on ebay (another $43), and the auction just ended: I had one bid for $10,7.

So maybe $12,5/$13,5 is what they’re worth at trade-in. And, of course, I’m sure part of the problem is that I want to buy $7-10K cars (in order to simplify my life) and trying to trade a more valuable one.

Oh, well. Thanks guys. Y’all take it easy.

Hi Terry
Glad you got some time off.

I'm trying to trade in my wagon for a minivan here in Seattle. Dealers tell me this car is 2k back of book. (I've been offered 17,500)

Auto, Homelink, and the cold weather package are the only options. 12k miles. Blue Anthracite. Not a scratch.

I haven't even seen a used Passat wagon for sale in the paper here to compare it to.

Any idea what it's worth traded in? Are the dealers just pulling my leg?

Thanks

We're thinking about trading my wife's '98 Volvo V70 for a minivan - with a 1 year old baby the wagon seems to be getting smaller carrying all the "baby gear" everywhere. Anyway, here are the particulars:
1998 V70 base model (non turbo)
White with tan cloth interior
Auto trans, heated seats
67,000 miles - all maintenance done (w/records)
recent front brakes and rotors - Toyo tires (18 months.
I'd like to get an idea of what it's worth- Carmax offered me $8k, looking in the papers I figure selling it should be $10,000 - $10,500.
Thanks for your help.

..... I always like to here whats going on with the guys and the ladies that post here ... So, I have some good news and bad some news ...!

The good news is: I saved some big money when I switched my ins to Geigo ...

The bad news is: right now, Audi's are taking some big hit's as far as re-sale,

Maybe because there is lot's of them on the road right now, dealer incentives .? rebates .? new model year, who knows. In the last 2/3 weeks, loaded up 02 Audi A4's 3.0 Quattro's with miles in the teens, have dropped "around" $2grand and can be bought now at the auctions for $24ish, it "seems" that Audi's are taking the biggest hit right now .... in your case, the miles are killing ya.

Audi's are great vehicles, but that market dwindles when you ad miles to the equation, but some vehicles like Subaru's and Honda's the buyers go blind on the miles, if they are clean ... remember I don't make the market, I just live it ..l.o.l.... try selling a 01 MB S430 with 35/40k, it's like selling Chicken Pox ..

They are all over the place right now.. BMW "factory executive" cars. (their term, not mine) Most are at BMW dealers, but this one isn't. I'm a techno cro-magnon, or I'd figure out how to link you to this one on E-bay. Supposedly, not a dealer demo or loaner car. Lets just assume its used.. and not CPO. What is it bringing at the auction? And what will it take to buy it? I'll re-post the specifics.

Thanks for not sending me to my room.

"Forest green over beige cloth, air, CD, bedliner, chrome package,"

As far as the Accord, I'm not positive how much they were thinking. I think dad was expecting about $2,000-$2,500 or so.

open the ebay page, left click on the address line - when it turns blue, right click and choose "copy". Once you're in your post here on Edmunds, right click again and choose "paste". It'll drop tehlink right into your post.
