Hmm... Copper? Hmmm... Me no think that good color...
IIRC, you're in the southwest, right?
Miles are right... and if it's really nice, I'd say wholesale on it ought to be about $8,000 or so.
Bill
but I do see your example there.
Retail: $17,475
Wholesale: $14,275
Discount Price: $16,700
Interesting how KBB prices are too high either here or when trading in a vehicle, but a local dealership uses KBB as THE source. Also interesting: on other vehicles there are add-ons for items that were standard equipment.
Would be nice to have Bill, Terry and some others I can trust doing business here
I mean, I often used KBB as an asking price but of course, generally sold the cars for less.
Say I had $15K in a car and wanted to sell it for $17K. If I Asked $17K I'd never get it. If I asked $17,995 I'd get it
That being said, $16,700 doesnt seem too bad for that van. I'd rather see it around $16K if I were you... Or, in reality, I'd rather see you spend $18K on an LE with lower miles.
Bill
well, I do have a Toyota which are suppose to have a strong resale value, but it's a Paseo not a Corolla or Camry so its not going to as strong a resale value as these two. For a '94 w/ 160,000 miles it hasn't cause me any big repair bills (knock on wood).
My philosophy re: 'when to trade a car' is when the car starts hitting you with big $$$$ repair bills. Sorta of what Quentin said.
Since I plan on keeping the car for another year, that would make my car 8 years old with 200,000 miles on it. What's the trade in on that? I'd think I'd be lucky to get $500 for it. Heck if it still runs good, I might decide to keep it as a second car and later try selling it myself.
It's interresting to hear everyone's opinion re when to trade. Like hearing what the average joe likes us thinks/believes and hear what the pro's like Bill and Terry, etc. say.
Leo
Thanks in advance.
Do different dealers in different parts of the country use different guides to price vehicles? I thought NADA was the big one.

Another favorite trick is to state that additional options have no value for a trade in....but then when they are selling the vehicle the options suddenly have great worth.
If anyone can answer this, I'd appreciate it. What's the difference between a turbocharger and supercharger? The GS is a supercharge. what does this mean turbo? Worried about increase maintainence/reliability problems on the GS model w/ supercharger.
Thanks,
Leo
Been lurking mostly, for awhile. Sounds like you've taken the bull by the horns and...you know. I envy you...(in a good way)
I picked up the GSX from a wholesaler i knew before i left. Hey, what do you mean, copper isn't a good color. OK, i'll call it Red then, is that better?
If the vehicle is clean -- tires are new ..and the vehicle -- look's, act's and drives ...and is super nice ..... well, you know the drill --- no, lot love bites ...and the interior is looking closer to a 1999 vehicle .....you are probably looking, in or around a $3,500 ish figure --- depending on the condition...
Now the CL.....Hmmmmmm, Well ...this vehicle is not ..copper.. or whatever that color is ...l.....o.....l.....? ---- .... These are kinda funny bird's -- customers, do love them --- but, you do have to find ..the right customer ..... I have seen a number of these at the auction.....so you going to be looking at a # ..in or around $24,000/$25,000 ish figure .....depending on the color ----
Not to hurt anyones feelings ..but the Nav systems ..don't really bring back a whole lot, at trade time ......... If you can live without one ..do so ---- or go to, Boat US - and get a hand held, for around $400 bucks, and have one with you 24/7.........
I hope this helps.....
Terry.
And think about this ..... Tiger Woods drives one .. so, they can't be that bad .....l....o....l.....
Terry.
And no ..I don't know the difference between them -
People do love that getty up --- I have driven them both .... and the new S- is a screamer.. ---
Terry.
Super high mileage, does have a tendency to kill the value of a domestic ( doesn't help import's either ) .....Bank's won't finance them ..and depending on the year and such -- can't place warranties on them .....
Dealers as a rule, use a basic yardstick for high miles --- depending on the vehicle.. rough book...minus 50% --- at that point in time --- this will change any of the NADA or similier books info --- they really don't know how, to adjust to the miles .....
I hope this helps.....
Terry.
Good luck!
Bill
An 11 year old, 160K mile, total repaint, Domestic car. No matter what it is, a car like that just isnt worth very much. If it was a 1990 Lexus LS400 with 160K and a repaint it'd still be $4K tops IMHO.
God knows where Kelly would peg it. With cars of that Vintage and mileage, it's more of a "what the market will bear" type of thing rather than using a guide. Terry does give a good example, but a lot of the guides are way offline when it comes to high mileage.
Take a 1999 Acura 3.2TL with 180,000 miles. Car's worth, hmm... $7,500 or so is my guess. But a Galves book will list it at $18-19K or so with 27K or so miles and a $200 deduct for every 1K over that (As a rough example). Does that mean that the car has a $30,600 Mileage deduct therefore you would have to pay a dealer $11K or so to accept it as a trade? Of course not, we know that.
OTOH, Say it's listed in Kelly Blue Book for $20K. Say they say to never hit a car more than 40% for miles. Does that make it worth $12K? I don't think so. Car isn't worth that.
An extreme example, but it shows how guides can be off.
As far as accuracy goes, Black Book and Manheim Auto Auction online data (Neither is available for public info... Manheim Online is $50/mo and Black Book is $200 or so per year for all 3 books IIRC) are the most accurate. However, they aint the cheapest.
As far as who uses what where... A lot of Midwest dealers seem to use NADA and Black Book. Kelley is a Los ANgeles company and they seem to only be really "used" in the west coast states while Northeastern dealers tend to use Galves. Down here in FL it's generally Black Book.
Bill
Not all cars sold at auction are dogs. With the popularity of leasing the auctions are full of actually pretty darn nice cars.
Heck, use Jaguar credit as an example. They dont negotiate their buyouts, so if the car's residual value is too high, to the auction it goes. I've bought some gorgeous, super-low-mile immaculate Jaguars (As well as most other cars) at auction.
Ford Motor Credit is the same way. I've seen 2-3 year old cars there that were as clean as new ones.
I've also seen cars run there that were bent in half. So it's all relative..
Bill
I've seen examples on these sites where they hit cars too low and others too high.
Let us know exactly what you have (And if we havent already) Me or Terry will tell youwhat your car is actually worth.
But if Kelly Blue Book lists your car at $1,500 over its' true Value... and you get quoted a cheap deal... well.. You cant have your cake and eat it too.
The trick is to know that you're getting a realistic price opn the new car and your trade.
Bill
It aint all roses tho... this economy has me a little cautious..
Glad you're back in Civilization tho!
Bill
I'm working on making contacts and i'll be out there eventually. In the meantime, if you are interested i do have some references for you to consider. Let's talk.
Leo
P.S. div2. thanks for the explaination on turbochargers vs. superchaargers.
1988 Ford Mustang LX hatchback (spoiler)
4 cylinder
automatic
power windows, steering, and locks
AM/FM stereo cassette and 10 disk CD changer
Air Conditioner (but no freon... I never use it in San Diego)
107,000 miles
the engine and transmission seem fine
negatives:
crack in windshield
passenger door handle is broken
minor dings and scratches
the bumper of the car has a lot of peeled paint. You see that on a lot of Mustangs of this age. I don't know what they were thinking when they painted those bumpers.
KBB lists is for about trade-in $1300. It seems like $800-$1000 would be fair, but I'm not sure.
Thanks!
I have 2 sisters who got used Taurus...and both had to have transmissions replaced. The 1 other sister got a new 1994 Taurus with 3.8L V6 after being a very satisfied owner of a 1985 Toyota Camry. She felt the 1994 Taurus was superior to the 1994. She has had zero problems with either and her daughter is still driving the 1985 Camry with no problems and over 200,000 miles. Ford replaced the head gasket a few years ago at no charge even though they had no problem with it.
1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4 x 2. Loaded with everything except leather interior. Just a hair under 40,000 miles. The color is white and I live in Michigan.
Thanks,
Leland
1999 Saab 9-3 4-dr STD turbo hatchback, heated seats, moonroof, auto, 20K, dark green, good condition (some exterior scratches, clean interior, no mechanical issues). The car is in the Philadelphia area.
It seems the residual value on this vehicle may already be under $17K...so it probably doesn't make sense to purchase the car at lease end?
In my experience whether its' a corporate, fleet, rental, dealer consignment..etc...
The cars seem to all bring about the same money no matter who is selling it.
Why these cars DO have lousy resale is simple. GOto an auction... see if you can buy 15 2000 Accords, Acura TLs, VW Passats within a week without flying all over the country.
Good Luck.
Now, want 15 Tauruses? I can have em for ya tomorrow. What colors ya want?
It's that there are so darn many of them out there... >:|
Bill
If it;s clean.. no paintwork or damage....that's a good thing. Miles do hurt it. Also, did you use the terms "2WD and Michigan" together in the same breath?
That will hurt it.
Expect something along the lines of $10K or thereabouts.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think it's going to get hit around "rough" book.... especially a 2WD with somemiles up in the snow belt I'm afraid.
Bill
Seeing as that car is worth roughly $15K or so wholesale right now......
Turn it in. If you like it, Lease another... SAAB has some serious lease subvention... use their nickel, not yours.
Bill
Is it an anniversary Edition? If so $16,900 might be cheap if anything...
Otherwise... Seems like a $15K-16K retail car to me.
That being said, tell him to lease the SAAB. Buyingone with their weak resale and heavuly subsidised leases is foolish.
Also, Watch what Jaguars in St Louis that you bid on on eBay.....especially by sellers who claim they are "flawless" (I recognized your name
Bill
Anyway, I see ads in the paper or on AutoTrader claiming a silver or green or black 99 Miata is an Anniversary Edition--if it ain't a Sapphire Blue 6-speed, it ain't an AE. Word to the wise.
Thanks again for your help. Don't mean this to embarrass you or sound condescending--hope it doesn't come off that way. I just wanted to help, I promise!
My problem is that the dealer said to offer him the deal and he would see if he could do it. Guess he is really wanting to move the LS since it is almost 2 years old. I have no idea what to offer on trade?? Do any of you have any thoughts as to what a 2000 LS that only has 15 miles might be actually worth? What is a good figure on my Jeep?
Thanks in advance.
John

I think she owes about $16,500 but at this point she is willing to take $15,000 to get rid of it. It is not that car is horrible or anything. Her monthly payment and insurance payment is over $600/month. Let me know what we can do. I called the dealer where she bought it (Tom Masano in Reading) to see if they would possibly buy it back. He told me to wait til the end of the month so I may try this weekend.
HELP!!!!
Thanks!
Bill
Where is the Jeep? Color? 4WD? I need a little more info...
As to the LS.. Methinks a decent retail price on an 00 used with 15K miles ought to be about $32K or so in a good color with that equipment...
Soo... I dunno... $34K? $35K?
But what can ya get an 01 for?
Bill
I dont wanna be the bad guy here...
You dont want to know what it is worth. If you can find someone who wants to buy it for $15K take it and run very quickly.
CHeck her paperwork, does she have an extended warranty in there? Credit insurance? If so, cancel them. That will help.
Check and see and let me know. RIght now shes in a bad spot tho
Sorry...
Bill
With the gas prices going WAY up, I am considering picking up '99/'00 VW Golf/Jetta TDI 5speed. Color is not important... As far as equipment goes, it should at least have power windows, and possibly sunroof (I think those come w/ premium package???).
Do you see any going at the auction(s)? If so, how much? I would most likely be going to one of the Chicago area auctions w/ a "friend".
Thanks,
Stan
The dealer sent me an email today about the LS. He had 3 the other day and now only has 2 '00's left. One is autumn red and the other is (parchment) gold. Both sticker right at $40k and he said today that he would take $32.5 for either. What do you think? Not bad?
See, you wouldnt have liked what I would have had to say at all...
From what I have seen, Solaras have fair resale value, actually not that great for a Toyota.
I'd have pegged the car around $18,500K or so... $19,500 seemed sorta high so I looked at Manheim Online and I also looked at a Black Book I had sitting here. Black Book is actually kinda low on these, which is rare based on the auction data I have. Even so, $19,500 is a heck of a deal. I thinkthe car is $18,500 to MAYBE $19K on a good day. Like your dealer said, there's only a handful that have soldso it's tough to gauge the market on them. A few with 6-8K miles have sold in Southern California where they're bringing $18-19K. 8K mile ones are doing roughly $18K so I think that your Lexus dealer is, if anything, stepping up on your trade.
$19,500 vs TMV on an ES300 is actually a hell of a deal. IIRC, isnt TMV on an ES300 like $800 over invoice or something? If I remember right... It's well below actual market on them in most places.
Heck, here's a link. I even went and scanned in a page of the Black Book!
http://members.aol.com/wsweismann/solarabb.jpg
Hope this helps... and sorry for the long post but it is a good deal from the looks of it.
That being said, may I make a suggestion? If you like it, Buy a Pearl White with Ivory ES300. Trust me, best resale color for that car! Also, bear in mind that car is getting a major restyle very soon, you might want to consider a lease on it. Lexus currently has a Money factor of around .00200 on them (If you have a 700+ Beacon score) with a strong residual. Stronger than I think the car is likely to be worth.
Good Luck!
Bill
I'd consider looking new here.
I looked up 99s. (New Body Style cars). I saw only 5 records nationwide in the last couple of months.
2 in Florida, 2 in PA and one sold in MN. All were 5-speeds. This was for a GLS so it'll have power and cruise.
Umm... a 44K mile one did $14K... Seems like a lot of em have miles and a lot of em do a lot of money. Still, I think $13K will buy a nice one if you can even find one!
A 98 (Old Body Style) will be a LOT Cheaper. Still, those are quite scarce as well. I saw a lot more records for 2000 Mercedes S500s for example.
Hmm... you know... user "greybaron" was asking the value of his 98... Maybe you two oughta hook up?????
Heck, it's a car you will likely have to travel for as it is....
Hope this helps!
Bill
4WD in Florida=Noreal noticeable premium, 2WD in the north=Bad
I think the Jeep ought to do around $13,500 or so. Give or take $500 if it's an SE in nice shape.
On to the LS:
$32,500 seems like a good price to me alright. I mean, figure a nice used 2000 is gonna be worth around $27K wholesale/$30K retail with 10K on it.... Still, see if $31,500 will take it
Seems like a fair price to me. So you want to trade for a $19,000 difference as a target.
Also, get the Parchment one... better resale color.
Good Luck. Also, you a vet? Too bad your'e not in Orlando.. I gotta take my Parrot to the Vet again I think. She got Serious Zinc poisoning and started plucking her chest feathers. Zinc levels are normal again but she still acts crazy from time to time and I think shes plucking again right when I thought I had finally weaned her off her collar >:|
