Everyone says, "Ask Terry"! Ok, here goes . . .

Looking to pick up a 2002 Type-S, no navi, with 27K miles. Dealer is asking 23.9K. I am NOT paying 23.9K. Also a 2003 Type-S with 20K miles, another dealer is asking 24.5K excluding tax and title of course. What would be a decent price for either car. Never had an Acura in the family. Thanks in advance.

I was afraid I'd be following a dangerous precedent...I'll pay the 20 clams for Carfax next time, promise! :-)
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
The dealer's has this car since August of '02?! Gee, I might actually be able to scrape together a deal on this one, or the V70 that's been around since '02...what IS it with these Volvos sitting collecting dust on dealers' lots?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... A Mustang, huh .. a gold Mustang, a Gold Mustang GT with 20k and it's in George W's stomping grounds and I'm going to "assume" it's a coupe, right.?

Miles are low, good color and "If" it's Clean, no peace signs painted all over it, good history, then the dealer probably has the mid to high $10's in it .. sounds like you should be able to buy it for $12,9ish ... whats he asking .?

Gheez, a LS V6 with a handshaker with 45k, no slider right ...? ... these things are Soooo Coooold, dealer "might" have the $11's in it .. the V8 auto's sell like popcorn, the meat cleaver V6's, you Can't give them away ...... pick a number.

Collect dust up here. We looked at a 95 K3500 CC 6.5L TD that the Nissan dealer found out back, turns out the truck had been there for 2 1/2 years and nobody knew it. Either way, it was a piece and we passed.

The people who bought the Nissan dealer recently inherited some new 2000's and 2001's and 2002's, most of them trucks and pathfinders, a few cars. Go figure. Probably had something to do with the shady tactics of the prev owners, I for one, wouldn't go in there unless they had something that caught my eye, even then I didn't like it.

On a brighter note.......My husband got promoted today......he's only been waiting 15 years 7 months for that!! Oh and its 45 below zero and dropping.
  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
Glad the hubby got the promotion!!! Are you getting ready to move to the moon to be someplace warmer? :-)

    Duncan
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Won't be moving anytime soon, maybe 2 years we will move down to the southern part of the state and he will commute. Otherwise we'll hang out here for 3 years so he can get his high 3 for retirement.

I wish we could move somewhere warmer......its -50 and still dropping.

    Terry,

I have a 3 month old 2003 TL (No Nav) with only 1,500 miles. Silver / Black Leather and dealer installed rear spoiler. Car is essentially new, but I want to sell so I can get the '04 TL.

What can I realistically expect to receive for this car? From a dealer and/or private party?

    Thanks in advance.

........ I saw this on one of the other boards, It's a funny article as far as content is concerned ...

Do the Mercury owners feel less appreciated than the others ..? .. maybe they could, there between a Ford and a Lincoln product, but in the large extent of that market those folks feel pretty good about themselves, they have had their Caddy's and imports, and now they are looking for a better value ..

If you use the Land Rovers as an example, they have a horrible service history but they sure are showing up in all those Ivy League driveways, if it wasn't for Ford they would be out of business by now .. VW and Benz has some wonderful vehicles but their service problems are getting to be Very serious, also they point out Kia is at 66.6% - 66.6% of what.? -0-, or is that "Aphrodite's Child" number of 666.? ..

I agree with Qbrozen, "that is a pretty interesting assemblage of information." .. now if you take all that info and add it up, divide by six, add 12, subtract 7 and multiply it by 1.09% then it means ...? .. remember, if these guys don't write an article, they don't get paid .l.o.l..

...... Congratulations on your hubbys promotion ... !

I gotta ask .. how does a promotion in a Fire House work ..? .. does he get to slide down the poll first ..? .. does he get to ring the bell on the truck .? how does that work .?

                               Terry :)

...... So in Chi-Town we have a 02 TL-S, no-sale blue, no nav and 27k .. dealer probably has $20ish in it, add a this and that (certified.?) then it probably hits the table at $21ish, depending on the history and the condition I would think in January you could grab it for the $22,5/$22,9 zipcode ..

The 03-S, miles are kinda tall at 20k, even so, $24,5 seems a little on the cheap side, no runs no hits no errors ..? .. maybe has $23,0ish in it, if it has a great history then this may be your better buy ...

Let me know what happens ..

                         Terry.
  • higgins7higgins7 Member Posts: 24
THANKS. We're heading out soon to view / try some of these cars. The zip code is 60656. All cars are certified. Any car we pick I will take to a competent independent for check up (engine and body). Tend not to put too much weight on Carfax report, but it certainly helps some. Another 02 WITH NAVI, 13k miles, white, was thrown in the mix, listed for 25.5K, this seems like the best one of the three. Your thoughts again pls.? THANK YOU.

Buying from a dealer, how do I check history? Private sale, party provides receipts, etc.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ..>>The zip code is 60656 --- .l.o.l..

Zipcode is a "phrase" I use, I don't look up zipcodes .l.o.l. .. Carfax is accurate to about 99% of the vehicles, but a good competent independent for the final check-up is always good .. the 02 is an "S" with the Nav and 13k, dealer probably has close to $22ish in it with the certified stuff, you might be able to see that one for the $24,5ish range ... pull the vin# on the Acura service computer for the rest of the info.

                        Let me know ...

                             Terry.

    "The zip code is 60656 --- .l.o.l.. "

oops!! Thanks a bunch. We're on our way. I'll post details (if any later)..
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Well, um, they don't have a pole, but anyway. He was promoted from GS-6 firefighter/driver(he's gov't) to GS-7 crew chief (basically right below the assistant chief). So he's a bit of a boss man now, he'll do great at it. Its the best news we could have gotten this year. 2004 is looking pretty good.

I should be seeing the guy who's buying the Chevy today with a payment, he called Wed. night to let us know when he would be here. The truck is doing ok, only a couple minor problems that he fixed.

Now if the logging/firewood business would just get back on track we will be doing top notch!!

Oh yeah and if the freakin' weather would warm up too........its -45 this morning.

Where would you hit this on a dealer trade:

    2002 Toyota Solara SE Coupe
    15,250 miles
    Maine
Dk blue exterior, tan cloth interior
    4 cyl auto
    AC, PW, PL, JBL CD
    15" alloys
    Sport pkg
    Power driver seat
    Power moonroof
No parking lot kisses or french fry invasions. Looks almost new.

I think when you're promoted at the fire house, Terry, you don't have to clean up after the dalmatian's, um, 'incidents' in the fire house.

I'm gonna wait until tax return time, Terry, and if that S90 is still there (why not, it's been there almost two years) I'm gonna take a serious look at pulling that trigger. Thanks for your help.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Cute, but um, no, Elkhart doesn't have *incidents* in the station, in fact she hardly every comes in anymore. She lives with one of the assistant chiefs at his house, she's getting old these days and all the people around make her nervous. I believe she turns 12 this year.

Being a crew chief means no more alarm room watches and more responsibility as far as keeping everyone in line. Oh yeah and a pay raise and a higher amount at retirement time (the most important part).

60656, NW side of Chicago, good luck, it's icy out there.

I like the "no sale" colors, blue & green and can't stand the common, safe investment, biege/tan!!

zip code stuff? People use zip codes, like Terry has a program/connection to USPS?

Why can't people write what city and state they live in?

....... No pole and he doesn't get to ring the bell ....? ... I would have passed on the job.

                           Terry.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Nope, no pole and no bell, BUT, he does have the satifaction of knowing he beat out 10 other guys, 3 from the department, 1 of which had held the position before, and the other 2 who are major whiners and think they should have the world handed to them (and yes, one of them is the guy with the $12k Focus).

I'm still not sure if I should be happy yet, if he hadn't gotten it we'd be moving somewhere warmer......like CA. Then I could have one of those sporty little cars.....
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ This must be Acura day .. I don't have a location, so for right now, you are living in Memphis ..

1,500 miles, good color anywhere, factory/dealer spoiler, what can I say, it's new or so I'm told ... trade side, in and around the $22ish range depending on the dealer, the miles save it .. actually you should hook up with Higgins here and both of you would be in "hog heaven" .. he's buying and your selling, perfect.

Let me know what happens ..!

                            Terry.

XLT, 4 door extended cab, 4WD,automatc, short bed, 60,000 miles. Paint is in good condition. Bedliner, and good tires. Dealer is asking $18500 but that seems waaaaay high....even for an asking price (didn't see any $12,000 Focuses on the lot though...tee hee).

How much do you think would be a good price for this bad boy.

    BTW, I live in mid-Missouri.
  • mark156mark156 Member Posts: 1,915
Jolie, I can't even imagine what minus 45 degrees would even feel like. In fact, how can you keep your house 120 degrees warmer than the outside temp? Is your heater running on full blast 24/7?

Went to my car club luncheon today.... the "Imperial club" met just before my car club gathered. My car club has a whole assortment of oldies from Chrsyler, Dodge, Cadillac, Lincoln, Rolls, Buick, Oldsmobile, Chevy, etc. They just don't make'em like they use to.

Mark PS. Congrats on your husbands promotion...looks like 2004 will be your year of good luck and prosperity!

Its easy to keep the house warm, we have a boiler system and a woodstove, the boiler doesn't run all that much when the woodstove is going. We keep the house at about 60 or so. Its going to be COLD tonight, probably -55 or so.

About now is when I grow very weary of Alaska. I can't go anywhere, can't be outside, so I'm stuck in the house. I suppose I could go somewhere, but at -40 (current temp) its rather dangerous to drive.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Nah, he's got a cushy job here, and he won't move unless he can get another cushy job. Where else can you get paid $70k/yr to eat, sleep, and watch tv??
  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
GS-7 is 70K up there? Same GS as the rest of the feds?

    Duncan
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Pretty close to it, as a GS-6 he's at $64k/yr, so I think the GS-7 is like $68k or so. Of course you have to remember there is a COLA too and a few other things for being at a remote. I believe its the same GS as the rest of the feds.

I am curious, for future trade purposes, what colors are on the consumer's side come trade-in time in Atlanta, GA? If the ? was to be asked differently, what would advise anyone to avoid if at all possible? The vehicle would be an FX35.

I would like to know what this car would be worth on a dealer trade:

    Indiana
    1999 Camry LE 4 cyl.
    94,200 miles
    Gold two-tone paint
    Alloy wheels
    Power everything
    Cloth seats
    Cassette, CD
    Factory sunroof
    Very clean
One small tear on back bench set (repaired, but noticeable)
    No dings

    Thanks!

Not a lot going for it. Miles are way tall, interior has some visible damage, exterior sounds nice (with those miles how many rock chips are in the front bumper paint?)
Retail side, it is a $7000-$8000 asking, $6500-$7000 out the door. Trade side, double nickels, $5500ish. (Very condition dependent on one with those kind of miles)

FYI in Indiana right now, there are more than 10 Camry's listed for sale at retail for $6990 from franchise dealers. Same 4 banger, 90-100K miles, cloth and pl/pw.
  • seekaineseekaine Member Posts: 8
Yes the Gold Mustang GT is a coupe and the dealer listed for 12.8. The LS no slider 5sp is listed for 14.5 I haven't looked at either car just seen the ad online. Looks like the GT would be a good buy. Thanks and I'll let you know if I buy one.

....... Oooh, another happy customer l.o.l .... (is there a trade involved.?)

Something doesn't smell right here, whats the deal ..? .. did you get all crazy in the showroom ..?

They advertised it (a fair price for both and not crazy on either end) and the salesman quoted that figure, when did they get this vehicle in, July.? .. how many "02" 13k, white, TL-S with Nav do they have ..? .. how many are there in Illinois, two..?

I could understand if they made a mistake, it happens, but $27,795 ... ? .. I just bought the twin to this one in silver, with 18k and paid $21ish and I paid too much, sold it for $24,900 (non-certified) ....... $27,900 .. ? that's a great price if you live in New Zealand .... time to find another dealer, but not "in" New Zealand ...... :)

                           Terry :)

I don't doubt that salesman was a jerk. A lot of jerks out there to be sure.

But, once your language got dirty I think you may have lost a few of us here.

I hope you really didn't say those words in a place of business no matter how bad your treatment was.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was hoping for at least $6,000, and was shocked yesterday to be offered $4,000...course I drove across the street and was offered $6,500.

As for the rock chips in the front bumper, there are none. It was repainted about 3 months ago courtesy of Toyota, due to the defective paint coming off in sheets.

It can be very sad sometimes. Someone is deeply buried in a car and their life circumstances change and they need to get out quickly.

They usually are forced into a voluntary repossession and their credit gets badly damaged for many years.

I feel for people who get into these situations.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Yes I agree, it is very sad. When the whole bk thing came down we were advised to surrender both of our vehicles. We were $12k upside down in our 2002 Dodge and $8k upside down in our 98 Grand Cherokee. I don't ever want to be in that situation again.

I hated trading in my 97 Explorer, but I wasn't upside down and I'm not too bad off in the 04 ($5k back of MSRP, but if I was to trade it anytime in the next 4 years I would probably bury myself. I do understand what its like to be so buried it would take 10 backhoes to find me, believe me.

    I see what you mean!

$37k for a $16-17K truck, $18K for a $10-12K Tahoe (2 door), and $6K for a Grand Cherokee that has "I don't know, maybe a motor" wrong with it that would be a $5K ride if it didn't have a rebuilt title and a blown motor...

No, I am not about to stoop to his level. But I did mumble it to myself and wife included. My wife knew it was best that we got out of there. I could have very easily made a scene; and the show room was pretty busy.

"But, once your language got dirty I think you may have lost a few of us here."

But it was ok for him to suggest / question that we might be wasting his time if we are not prepared to pay very close to the price on the window which was in all likelihood printed in error on the web. Some customers WILL waste a "sales person's" time, if they are NOT prepared for that those bad apples then they should do something else. Pharmaceutical sales, or most type of sales career, will often wine and dine prospective clients without any guarantee of a sale / commitment to purchase!! I'm DONE, at least with that dealer. Thanks for the help.
