    Here's what you said ...

"I would have no fear to drop this in the Hotlanta paper (after a great Ad and a super detail) for an "asking" of $7,9 and say Happy Thanksgiving for $6,5/$7,5 "

It was a 95 Lexus GS300 Touring with 150k and slight (almost unnoticable from afar) damage to the hood/front bumper. But it had new tires, brakes, new timing belt, and was gold with tan leather.

Put it in the autotrader for a couple of weeks at $7900 and got a few calls. Lowered the price to $7500 and sold it to the first person who came to look at it for $7000. Took a total of 5-6 weeks but that was definitely worth the $2000 extra we made vs. selling it to Carmax.

2002 Dakota Ext. Cab by jaserb Feb 17, 2004 (12:00 pm)
Terry, here's one for a buddy of mine:

'02 Dakota Sport 2wd Extended cab
    18k miles
White with grey cloth interior - bucket seats
ABS, CD, cruise, keyless, fogs, sliding rear window, wheels, tint
    Auto, 3.9 V6
    OEM tires in good shape
The truck is real clean, inside and out. No scratches, dents, etc.
    Provo, UT area

What is he looking at as far as a private party vs. trade-in number? Dealer has been hitting him at around $10k, but he's looking at Retail Road to minimize his negative equity. Thanks!

    -Jason

                 =================================

Ok Jason, lets take a look see .. it's a 02 Dakota Sport with a Ecab, 2wd, 18k low miles, V6 with an auto, it's white with grey guts - and you say it's in nice shape (it's a *L32* - a Sport, right.?) .. $10 seems maybe a little low, 18k and clean, $10,5/$10,9 seems more in line, but Utah I'm not familiar with .. how many people live in Utah.? 10,0/20,000 ...? oh yeah, you have that Salt Lake City thing going on, Mormons and all that .. have you shopped this dude.?

Down Retail Rd: wonderful 5 liner Ad, superb detail, all the service records .. $12,9 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $11,9/$12,5 ...

Don't forget to let me know how it goes ........ :)

    Hi Terry!

I am tentatively looking to trade in my 2003 Passat GLS with:

    1.8T

    Homelink
    Tan leather interior
    Candy White exterior
    Monsoon with CD/cassette
    Steering wheel radio controls C
    Cold weather package

Just under 7,500 miles, excellent condition as I just had it washed, waxed and the leather interior treated and the mats washed.

I'm in the Northern VA area 20170 :)

    Thank you!!

****oh, sounds nice, another Art Deco piece****

Nah, just the average Alaskan rig, usually if it runs and is 4WD its worth at least $1500, running and no 4WD is always worth $1000, but I gave the guy buying the Jeep a break.

    ... ** 2001 Saab 9-5 Wagon? by saabermom Feb 17, 2004 (11:29 pm)
Our 3yr/36K lease is up this summer and we are trying to decide if we can afford to buy our 9-5 Wagon, or if we should "downsize" to something like a 2002 Saturn LW-300 V6. So the basic question is, is it reasonable to present a counteroffer for our $18,200 residual, and what might that be in relation to auction values?

We're in SoCal, it's a Steel Grey Met, 2.3L Auto with Leather, Sunroof, F/R Heated Seats w/Memory, HK Audio.

And what about the Saturn, might it be a prudent step down? The Edwards TMV for one is about $10K from a private party, which would make for a big savings...**

                   ======================

I need "todays" miles, not June or July .. I'll just say you have around 30k on it ..

If it was traded today with deep round things, clean, seats look hovered in, no guacamole living in the back, then you would probably be seeing in and around the $15's on a trade - what it will it be worth in the summer.? I dunno, you will have to check back, but it will be less ... in this case, it's a lease and you have a stiff residual of $18,0 that will be stairing at you this summer ..

Depending on the lease company, you can probably get them to negotiate the final pay-off, but they won't really address that until the last 4/5 weeks of the lease ... Saturns make a great buy on the used side, right now 02 LW300 V6's with miles in the 15/20k range are doing around the $11ish wholesale, you should be able to buy one for around the $14ish range or less .. it all depends on what ya like.

                 I hope this helps ...

                           Terry.

          repost on 02 pathfinder by carnutt1 Feb 19, 2004 (12:11 pm)
Going price to sell my pathfinder, trade or retail? 02 SE 4x4, silver with black cloth, bose and sunroof packages, 23,000 miles, excellent shape. located in Omaha, NE. Thanks

O-Ma-Ha .... SE ~ miles are on the lowish side, color is good anywhere, we have the Bozo sound, we have the hole in the roof and you say it's in good shape ... (that means no kisses, repaints, no Jack the Ripper interior, deep sneakers and good service) .. trade side it's worth the mid to high $18's depending on the dealer - down Retail Rd, $21,9 *asking* and kick it loose for $20,5/$21,5 ... park the ego and grab the cash.

...... How are we Carrie ..?

We got no miles, color is fine, it's an auto, we got the leather package going on, we have a little moron stereo stuff .. all in all it's probably a pretty nice little driver .. depending on the dealer, trade side, in and around the $17's, probably the low to mid $17's .. the miles save it, the large market of Passats For Sale might hold it back ...

                        Let me know ...!

........ I was reading an great article at the boat show about folks that sell their own boats and cars (I should have kept the whole thing) ...

63% feel it's too much trouble because of the inconvenience/privacy aspect so they trade it, 18% would rather have a broker or a friend/dealer do it for them and pay them the commission and the remaining 19% that "try" to sell them on their own, lose patience in the first 6 days, and of that 19% - 8% will trade it because of frustration ... obviously your part of that 11% .. so your patience paid off, it usually does.

The funny part about the boat market is, there is a Huge difference between the retail and the wholesale figures, I mean H-U-G-E .. do you think the Nada/Kbb/Edmunds/Cars R's us, etc are a little twisted, you should see Real-World Trade-In Values on boats - YiiiiKes.!!

I know its nice to get updates

.... i'm about ready to pull the trigger on an '02 i35, black on black, bun warmer package... clean, it is certified, new tires and all service is there, a few small rock chips in the front bumper and a very small scratch on one of the back doors, 27k miles... $22,3 is their latest offer. rides pretty solid.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
I don't like to sell cars at all ... however, I have to sell a few of them each year. I prefer to sell the vehicle to the employees and/or families as it gives them a good deal and less of a hassle for me. The employees know the driver of the vehicle, they talk to the maintenance guys who service it and can generally get a good feel. I let them take the car home and encourage them to take it to a mechanic if they please.

However, occasionally, I cannot sell a car. For me, it is hard to sell a car for more than $10k among the employees here. Or you have a "problem" car like that Volvo S80. Those end up at the auction (through the leasing company).

I do NOT throw the sale open to non-employees because I have NO intention of having to meet with people or going on test rides. The fleet duties are about 5% of my job and I don't want the hassle of "after work" meetings and the like.

On the personal side, I keep the cars until they are worth under $1000. At that point, there are a lot of folks looking for running cars who have no credit but can scrape together $2000 over a few weeks. Generally, it takes maybe two days to unload the car, a lot less if my wife handles it (g).

In Connecticut, I have a 1999 BMW 528i w/Sport Package, 63K miles, automatic, sunr, 6CD, Silver w/Black Leather. Clean, excellent condition, all svc records. Newer Toyo "summer" tires on orig rims, plus Dunlop Wintersport M2's on Borbet rims included.

Planning to trade in for an Infiniti FX35 or BMW X3.

What can I expect for trade-in or if I sell privately?

    Thanks!
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... We live in the major upper NE part of the country (as in USA) .. we drive a 99 Bimmer 528i with the EL Sporto package and we are cranking around 63k .. "excellent condition", no such thing, unless your driving a 03 540i with 4,100 miles and it hasn't even heard the *whisper* of 20 inches of snow ....

The color is a good thing and lets say it's clean for the year, miles are a little on the hefty side, not bad, just hefty kinda like my Aunt Elma .. service is oozing from the console, no Wal-Mart kisses, no Popeyes chicken hiding in the seats, no American fries and no repaints .. trade side, in and around the high $15's low $16's, "maybe" might see the tall $16's if everything goes your way ...

Down the path of the Rich and Famous, turn right, go another 2 miles, then when you cross the tracks that will be Retail Rd, after a Superb detail, a Wonderful 5 liner ad in the biggest paper in your area, and with the service records hanging from the mirror, $19,900 *asking* and send it packing for the first $18,5/$19,5 ....

Don't forget to let me know .!

                           Terry :-)

PS: I have a feeling you might pick that FX ..

You've been on the money my last three cars (and thanks again). You suggested I might sell my '01 Lexus ES300 (18k miles) white/ivory privately for $23ish. Put a nice, complete ad in the paper for 10 days @ $23k. Zero calls. Lowered it to $22.5k on Monday and still.....zero calls. Am I being impatient? I've got 3 weeks 'til turn-in time so the clock is ticking.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ...... Texas territory .?

I really can't say .. I just bought two last week, both 01's, one silver and one white pearl, both with miles in the 22k range, nice & clean, paid $19ish and by the time they got home and serviced they had almost $20,0 in them (priced at $24,9) ..

Whether they sell tommorow or they sell in 3 weeks they will sell, the rates are cheap and they are a great purchase for those who really know cars ... maybe it's your ad, maybe it's the weather I can't say .. sometimes I will take a nice clean car that's not moving right away and "hold" it off the market, then put it back in 2wks .. if you read jlawrence01 post (#17445) a few up from you, he didn't see any action on his ad's for like 2/3 wks, then all of a sudden BANG, 2 down and 1 to go .... it's a nice vehicle and their certainly not distressed merchandise, it should sell .. I have seen dealers pay as much as $21,0 for ones that are very similar to yours - be patient .. hows that go again.? .. a watched pot never boils ..?

In an earlier post someone was looking at a used 2004 Intrepid with over 30K miles on it. One thing to consider is that the 2004 LH cars were introduced early, one year ago, in fact. They ended production in August! So, most coming in the maket would have the same miles as 2003's.

Me, I think there are too many early intros, it messes up the used car market figures.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    Two possibilities:
$20+ is a tough market for a private sale; not too many people looking to spend that kind of cash scanning the classifieds. Though if they do, they might do really well...

I notice you put your "liking price" right in the ad... you didn't put "firm" or any such silliness in it, didya?

Anyway, good luck to ya, mate. Pearl in Tx; $20+ for an ES300 with no miles? It's gotta sell...

...... 27k, color is fine for the area, we have the cold pack and it has the certified stuff (Infiniti dealer.?) .. at $22,3 nobody is getting hurt or rich, probably has close to $20/$21ish in it with the warranty and the rubber ... see what $21,9 will do and go from there ...... :)

thanks terry.... Yes, it is an Infiniti dealer... got them down to $21,6 and got $8,5 on the '98 Pathfinder (86k miles, LE 4x4, silver/grey, leather, bun warmers, slider)... your right, I don't think anyone got hurt nor rich, but it was a very pleasant experience...

    Many thanks...

You have helped me before. I need help with my brother in laws car. It a 2001 MBZ CLK 430 Cab, Black/Grey Leather/Black Top 15K miles only options are chromes and cd changer. Car is clean, good rubber, no accidents, still under warranty. Want to trade it in to a Lexus dealer or sell it outright to a MBZ dealer. We are in Los Angeles, CA. What do you think ? ....... Hey Jeff .. so, we have a 01 black cab CLK430 with 15,000 tiny miles and it's sitting in the land of the Angels, sounds like it could be a nice one ...

I don't have to tell ya it's gotta be like new, seats gotta look hovered in, no curbage, no I backed down Aunt Marys driveway and scraped 5ft of her roses, it has to look and drive like an 04 ...

Trade side, in and around the $39ish figure, "maybe" "might" roll towards the $40,0 figure -IF- the barometric pressure is right, there is no EL Nino's on the Left Coast and it needs -0- ... the miles save this fat daddy, Benz's and tall miles don't do well together, if it had 30/35k you would be seeing the $35 figure or less ..

                          Let me know ...

                             Terry.

Hi, I'm a new user looking for some help on selling or trading my 1995 Nissan Maxima, in the Chicago area. Here is a brief description:

95 SE black/black, auto. Every factory option (leather, all power, BOSE, slider, heated seats etc. etc.). 99K miles with service records.

2 owners, body work to right side of vehicle (sideswipe--no structural damage)--to my untrained eye it looks perfect

Rust around the rear spoiler attachment (bubbling paint) plus a couple of other tiny spots. A/C inop (needs evaporator). Starter makes a slight grinding noise. Temperamental power seat--also driver's seat heat only works on the backrest.

Otherwise, not bad! Interior looks almost new and the car runs/drives perfect. Deep rubber.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
............ Oh yeah, other than the rust, the starter problems, no cold breeze, 100k, a bad power seat and a previous accident it sounds just like new ....

I dunno about this one, have you tried Lasik yet ..? .. $2,5ish, maybe $3,0 on a push .. I would have to see this one.

                            Terry ;-)

    $3?
Not of my money... It'll take $2k to make it right, easy, and then it's still worth, what, $3,500?
    Nice cars, though, Maximas... -m

I have to confess that I read your post at 2:30 am this morning ..

Reminds me of that old country song by Jogn Anderson, "Those rose colored glasses, that I've been lookin' through..."

This one sounds like a $1,500 beater ... or a car that you should plan to drive to 150k miles because I see a lot of cars up here in Chitown available for $3k without all those problems.

Trying to trade in the above on a Sequoia- Expedition has 61,000 miles - great shape (because my wife drives it :) ) - dark blue, 5.7 V8, CD changer, rear AC, cloth seats
Can you give me some guidance? Indianapolis area, if that counts plus or minus
    Thanks in advance!

haven't seen it yet, but if the ad is right, it is a:

1999 M3 convertible, pretty well loaded up (don't really know the options configs on an M). Silver, in NJ

46,000 clicks. 5 speed, of course.

Assuming the usualy caveats, what do you think this should go for?

I think it is listed at $21,990.

Just for the heck of it, what would a 323i or a 328i with the same particulars (sport, premium, say) be going for?

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

Central Iowa dealer asking $24,500. Moondust metallic, taupe leather, auto, only 17K miles and looks great, power everything, heated memory seats, power roof, traction and stability system, Volvo cert. warranty 6yr/100K. Where do you price it?

What is the trade value of 2000 Maxima GLE with 32K miles (30K service done) Sterling Mist with gray leather. Auto, no slider, no cold pack, nicely detailed but half dozen tiny rock chips up front (no rust). Tires have 5 to 10K left.

Lot's of these around and the miles are not going to be your friend here, color is ho-hum and it probably needs big round things, no hits, no runs no errors .. trade side, in and around the ultra high $12's, low low $13's .. the 5.4 V8 helps it and the tall miles taketh away ......... :)

If it is Chezik-Sayers be careful on how they negotiate. They tried to high pressured the wife and I into a sale of a car about 10 years ago. That was a long time ago and their practices may have changed.

    ....... Am I reading this right ..?

It's a 2000 "T6", as in: "it's a two thousand" ... it has 17,000 babied miles ..? .. moon dust with the tan leather guts.? .. we have a hole in the roof, cold pack with the tc and we get the 100k warranty with it, right ..?

and he's asking $24,500 .....? as in: twenty four thousand five hundred dollars -- Is that American money ..?

$24,500 ....?!?! .. is this the Iowa we are talking about .?
    *Statehood
Iowa became the 29th state on December 28, 1846.

    *Capital City: Des Moines
Founded at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers; originally a military outpost.

    *Nickname: The Hawkeye State
The nickname was adopted early in the state's history. Two Iowa promoters from Burlington are believed to have popularized the name.

I mean, it's not like your talking about the Iowa that's in the Ukraine or the Iowa thats in Peru, right ......?

$24,500 ......? .. Because that's where you would need to be living for that kinda of PRICE ....!!!! .. Holy #*^@+ Yeeeeeeooow.!!

IF, and the word being here is "IF", you live in the Iowa State thats here in the US of A, then the dealer can't have more than the $17's in that pup .. let's get crazy, then lets add the cpo and let's ring the bell at $18,5 (scary, thats one loud bell) .. $21,500 would be ALL the monies, all the peso's, every M&M between the Dakota's to Daytona Beach ...

Ok, back to the Maxima GLE .. it's low in miles, it needs some sneakers, no cold pack, auto, no slider and a good color anywhere .. trade side, (based on his numbers he might give you $20grand for it .l.o.l.) it's worth in and around the the mid $12's ...

Now let's put all that other nonsense aside .. you "should" be able to trade for a "difference" figure of around $9,000 and your vehicle, actually $9,0 or less, plus the ttl .. $24,500 ..? .. okay, email later I have this piece of property that's located in this really nice place, at first it might look like a swamp, but ...l.o.l...

    Terry,
We are considering trading in my wife's 2001 Forester S vehicle. This car has just turned 90,000 miles, has leather interior (added by dealer), is Dark Green, and we are located in Northern NJ. It is in overall good condition but has a minor ding in the LR quarter and a couple of chips in the windscreen. Tires were just replaced about 2 months ago. Any help would be appreciated on getting a realistic trade in figure.

Please give some advice on Trade In or CarMax sell price.

1995 Pontiac Firebird. V6. AT, PDL, PW, T-Tops. 91K Miles. Located in Tennessee.

Appearance wise car is in excellent condition. I am aware of no major mechanical problems. 2 known problems (the PDL switches have quite working and the pop up light motor continues to run for 3 seconds after the lights have dropped)

Certified pre-owned with warranty to 2/05 or 100k. This model has had a lot of bad press. Most of it deserved. Mine runs well now after several trips to Volvo to exorcise the gremilns.

Edmunds TMV is $11,000 trade & $13K + private. That sound optimistic to me .

    Thanks for your help.

I just read at Autonews that Roger Holler Jr. died this past weekend. What are you doing to the competition? Making them run so fast to keep up that they have the big one? :)
