Re Post 17478, I forgot to advise that the color of the car is Black on beige leather.

I would appreciate any advise on the trade & Private party sale value. I live in north NJ. Car is clean in & out, 67,000 miles, new tires and brakes at 60K. All maint. up to date. Certified pre-owned with warranty to 2/05 or 100k. This model has had a lot of bad press. Most of it deserved. Mine runs well now after several trips to Volvo to exorcise the gremilns.

Edmunds TMV is $11,000 trade & $13K + private. That sound optimistic to me .

    Thanks for your help.

    ...... $21,900 .? .. seems awful cheap, even with 45k ...

I'm not saying it can't be bought for that figure, but there doing $22/$23ish at the auctions depending on the area and color, the real clean ones with miles in the 15/25k range are doing the $25/$26ish range and seeing $30ish on the retail side ..

sniff sniff, I smell something .. $21,900 ..? smells like paint work, accident, maybe salvage title (?) .. is this an Ebay car, dealer, private sale ..? -- Look Close.!

99 Convert 328's with miles in the 40/50k range are doing the $17/$18 range dealer side, and with spring getting closer (maybe) up north I would think they will see the $22ish range on the retail side ..

Don't forget to let me know on this one ...

....... The 99's had quite a few little nit picking nagy problems, not up to the Volvo standards thats for sure (could be worse, you could have bought a "C" class Benz), but the 01's+ seem fine ..

Black with tan guts, 67k, warranty til 100k .. these have to be nice and clean, no Ace bandages, no fighting for parking spots at the Giants games, no funny stuff in the ashtrays .. trade side, in and around high $8's, maybe the low $9's ..

With a super detail, a superlative 5 liner ad (brag on the warranty) all the service records on the front seat, $12,900 *asking* (and with tears in your eyes) say goodbye at the first $11,0/$12,0 .. the year and miles will hurt it and the warranty will save it ........... :)

Also, what should I hope to get private party.

ReCap. 1995 Pontiac Firebird. V6. AT, PDL, PW, T-Tops. 91K Miles. Located in Tennessee. White.

Appearance wise car is in excellent condition. I am aware of no major mechanical problems. 2 known problems (the PDL switches have quite working and the pop up light motor continues to run for 3 seconds after the lights have dropped)

    Thanks Terry. You the man.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
called the dealer. Turns out they screwed up the ad. It is actually an M roadster (the 2 seater), not an M3. So, that explains the price difference.

Unless something special comes along, I will probably keep the Maxima and Miata until the fall, and sell them both for a 4 seat convertible. Unless my back gets worse, in which case a for sale sign goes on the Miata the day the crocuses bloom.

........ These Subu's are stronger than the 101st Airborne in a fire fight, especially up north in the land of the polar climate ...

This one I will have to guess on .. the miles and the color don't help it, we have new sneakers and a/m leather, it's an "S" .. lets say (except for the dent) it looks drives and feels like 40k, I would think somewhere in the $9's trade side, the miles hurt it but I have seen high mile Subu's get goofy $$, so this has my interest ... so let me know how it goes.!

.... ** If it's a nice one, deep sneakers, no KFC hiding under the seats, no collisions with the snow plows .. then trade side, in and around the high $19's, could see the low $20ish figure with all the snow you guys have been getting ....... :) .. but if needs stuff, start deducting ..

...... ** You the man. ** .... yep, that's what what g/f says (of course she's half-blind and drunk all the time .l.o.l.)

Almost 100k looming on the horizon, T-Tops, V6, auto, power pack, we have the blinking lights, rwd .. trade side, no rust, lookin' and feeling like 50k, in and around the $1,5/$2,0ish range depending on the dealer, maybe a little more if it's a "baby doll" ...

Sounds like a candidate for Retail Rd, deep rubber, lights fixed, any service, great ad, super duper clean - $4,900 *asking* (wait til' spring) and cut that bad boy loose at the first $3,5/$4,5 .. if the tops are leaky, we have rust growing, it looks and feels ruff, then just trade it ....

I have it listed in the paper at $4400 and have not gotten the first nibble. Is it worth spending the money to fix the problems with the door locks and the pop up light or use that to come off the price?

    Hi terry, need a trade-in estimate for;

99 Chevy Venture, LS Extended 7-passenger Van, Dark Blue, gray interior.

    Options
    rear air / heat
    2 built-in child seats
1 power sliding door on passenger side
    traction control

good condition - no accidents or rust, original owner, runs good, we've been good with maintenance, oil changes, etc.

    new tires
    71,000 miles

live north of Boston. so far best dealer offer is $3500. kbb, edmunds and others estimate approx. $6000. why the big difference?

    Hi,
I was wondering what I could expect for trade in of my 2001 VW Jetta Wagon, loaded, mint cond., 77K. I went to one dealership and they ofered $6,000.00 which I thought was really really low considering what I still owe. Any thoughts??
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
you need to supply a lot more detail on the Jetta: Model, engine, trans, color, location,

Appreciate the advice. If I trade, I'll probably shop it to a dealer that sells Volvo/Saab. Conventional wisdom (read wishful thinking) is I could max out trade value if the dealer is hot to move a new car ASAP. I'll let you know what happens.

    Thanks, Terry.

    just something to remember...

"which I thought was really really low considering what I still owe"

What your car is worth, and what you owe, have absolutely nothing to do with each other, except in your pocket.

The market, dealerships, and auctions don't take heed of people's loan payoffs.

    ....... Great description, thanks ..

It's a 96 LXI, we have 90k rolling through the streets of Kerryland, needs some rubber, brakes they will probably miss, hot and cold running air/heat, good color for a van ....

Lot's of vans on the streets, especially lot's of Chrysler vans on the streets, this one has the miles, and even though you might never have had a problem with it, the bad rep sometimes can kill it .. trade side, in and around the $3ish zipcode, maybe a little less depending on the dealer cuz' of the lack of the round things ......

........ It always better to spend $80/$125 to get a repair, than have the guy standing and looking at your vehicle and saying: "it will cost $500 to get this and that done, I know, I called, so get it fixed and I will come back" ..

By that time, they have bought something else (and usually they haven't called anyone) but in your case it could be a safety issue ....

........ Soooo, we have a 99 Ext Venture LS, we got the no-sale blue going on, we got 71k going on, we got the hot and cold running air, we have the power "ouch" going on with the 7 pass ..

IF ~ it's super nice and clean, deep sneakers, no Dilliards dents, no paint by numbers, no terrorists attacks in the interior ... trade side, in and around the ultra high $4,0's, low low $5's - the $6's not in this lifetime, thats a retail figure .. $3,500 .? either I'm missing something, or your missing something, or the dealers are missing something, or maybe not, or maybe your at import stores.? ...

You need to shop it around, unless this dude has been hit by a little mortar fire it's gotta be worth $4,500ish ....

A while back, I had asked for a valuation on a 96 Toyota Camry LE 4cyl sedan, automatic, 61K mi, dark green over gray cloth interior, CD, keyless entry with remote start, 10K miles on tires (plus all the LE stuff... windows, locks, tilt, cruise, etc).

You hit it at low to mid 3's on a trade. Well....

I got $4000 on trade toward an 04 Camry LE, silver, with upgraded JBL CD/cassette, ABS, side/curtain airbags, pwr moonroof & preferred accessory pack (carpet floor & trunk mats, cargo net and... a first aid kit!) Got the 04 for $400 over invoice... and $750 rebate made it $350 under invoice. I may have left some money on the table, but I think it was a fair deal for both parties and I am happy with it.

Oh yeah... this is in Western PA... where we live in the past, where we *still* talk about how great the Steelers were in the 70's, and where we *still* chant "One For The Thumb"... have been saying that since 1981... LOL!

Thanks again for the valuable service you provide here.

I live in metro Atlanta. There's a dealer here in town who says he'll charge me $1,000 over wholesale for any car I name that he can buy at auction. He goes once a week. One of them is run by Mannheim, a Cox-owned company. The cost includes his inspection and reconditioning of the automobile.

    Questions:

    1) Based on Edmunds TMV, does "wholesale" equate to trade-in value.

    2) Would $1,000 over wholesale be a good price for a used car, all things considered?

    Thanks.

    Terry (and others),

Thank you very much for your valuable opinions on the 95 Maxima that I inquired about over the weekend. (You know, the one in "less than pristine" condition :)

You may be surprised to hear that I managed to fetch $5K for it (private sale).

You see, prior to hearing the numbers being batted around here, I had priced it on "another" website and it came up with a retail of around $7200. So I lopped off 2K for all the problems and had advertised it for $5200.

I got exactly one response, from a young couple. They seemed to fall in love with the vehicle after the test drive and managed to convince each other, before my eyes, that the problems were "no big deal" (with no cajoling from me). To make a long story short, they offered $4800 and I offered to split the difference. The car is now off my hands.

I have no doubt that 2500-3000 may have been more realistic. I guess sometimes it pays to get lucky.

    Thanks again!

    Congratulations. Wow.

Anyway, that'll learn me (and jlawrence, I s'pose) to disagree with Terry in public...

BTW, when he said "$2,5-$3", them's wholesale/auction/trade-in numbers. So you done went and got $2 over that, which is a lot, but you'd expect at least $1 over wholesale when you do a good job selling privately.

Hey, got those people's adress? A buddy of mine's got a '93 Taurus Wagon with almost no rust that he'd like $3,000 for...

    Hi Terry:

A friend of mine went out with his g/f and got himself convinced enough to purchase a 2002 Q45, with the Premium package. Stupidly, he didn't ask moi so I could have checked with the Oracle to foresee what he needs to offer. He paid $42K +TTL. Now he is in remorse, and regrets the purchase (the plates aren't even on the car yet),. He'd like to trade it in for a 2004 GS300, which he thinks fits him better than the Q.

    Here are the specs:

    2002 Infiniti Q45
Premium package (Bozo sound, Nav, rear-camera, 18" chrome wheels, the works....)
    White over tan interior
17K miles (The car had 14K when he purchased it in December 2003)
    Located in San Diego

Wants a 2004 GS300, same color combo, less gizmos (doesn't like gizmos, just got suckered into the Q by his g/f). Sucks really to see this happen to a good guy :( But I hope he can get out of the Q with minimal damage :)

    Thanks, as always....

......... Finally we get some answers here ...

Hotlanta bound, we have 75,000 Huge miles going on, color is good anywhere, it's an El' Coupe' and we have that $2,000 ooop's ..

CLK's have to be like "brand new", almost like "it's only our second car" look, the miles are killing ya here, service has to be from yesterday and the tires need to be newer than that, no curbage, interior has to look hovered in, big dents dings and that minor football injury helps not, plus we have that 6" "I pushed my shopping cart into your car" scratch, that's always a big winner ..

If it's just scratched, no metal damage and 75% can be be hidden by a great buff and glo, that may be the way to go .. once you start breaking the paint and turning 6"'s into a pumpkin size re-paint, then that could be a big problem with big deducts, of course I'm not looking at it ... trade side, in and around the mid to high $17's, maybe "might" "could" see the low low low $18's -if- your a friend of Jayson Williams, everything goes your way and it needs -0- ..

You pay taxes on the difference in GA, right.? .. down the road to Retailville, deep sneakers, perfect detail, all the service records and a great and wonderful ad, $20,900 *asking* and cut that bad boy loose for the first $19,5/$19,9 .. 75k on a 00 Lexus doesn't ruffle too many feathers, but the miles will kill ya on a Benz, plus your in competition with all the 30/35kers ...

Let me know how it goes ...

                           Terry :-)

...... For starters, there is no such thing as "mint", now maybe if it had 17k and it's been garaged in Ocala that would be different ..

Second: pay-offs have -0- to do with the value of a vehicle, pay-offs are nothing more than the shadow or the echo of "your" loan .. trade value and loan amounts are 2 separate entities.

Two big enemies here: the miles and the handshaker, big miles for a 01 and the world is not beating a path to the doors of manual transmissions, "especially wagons" .. the good part is, it's a GLS, we have the slider, leather, also let's hope you have deep round things, no Wal-Mart kisses, no Popeyes chicken buried in the seats and it "looks and drives" like 30/40k and the service is 100% complete ...

$6,0 grand.? (sounds like the Galves book in Vermont) seems a little on the low side to me, trade side in and around the mid to high $7's, maybe even the low low low $8's, but that's a Big Maybe -- $6,0 grand ..? I would be out shopping, but who knows with Kerry running around, he might be lowering the value of vehicles already .l.o.l...

                     Let me know ...

                           Terry :)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... The words to watch here is: "it depends" .. and I don't mean the kind you wear.

It "depends" on what kind of vehicle .. are we talking about a Taurus or a Lexus 430, are we thinking about a 99 Chevy S-10 or a 02 Diesel Excursion, just because someone has a dealers license and goes to the auction doesn't mean he knows alot about a alot of vehicles, I know because they stand around me all the time at the Atlanta auction .l.o.l..

But seriously, it depends if he knows his stuff, lot's of experience (with his own money) buys $5,000 and $50,000 vehicles all day long, knows the difference between a roadster and a convertible and doesn't have a bunch of paper cuts from flippin' through all the books, then that's a very fair price ...

To answer your first question, I have know idea were they get that info from, sometimes their pretty close, sometimes their way off, sometimes they throw all the numbers in a hat and divide by 3 ............ :)

                            Terry.

You keep talking about tall miles. Just wait until it comes to trade in time for my 04 Explorer........considering I have 5200 miles on it right now and it won't be 2 months old until the 6th.......I figure by the 3 year mark we'll be well over 120k.

Good thing is it WILL be garage kept after April/May. The house we are buying has a garage, so no more cold harsh winters for my poor Explorer.

    Hi Terry,

This is a base 02 Blond-Grey Isuzu Axiom 2WD with black and tan interior. Currently has 24,200 miles and has had all proper maintenance performed. Two small door dings on the passenger side. Every time I go to a delear they offer 'actual cash value' which is always $3k-$4k less than edmunds trade in values. Are they greedy or on target?

    Thank you

.......... He's got all the stuff, nav, the back-up eyeball, the 18's with the prem pack, low in the miles dept, color is ok ..

Let's hope this guy put some Big Cake down on this puppy .. oochy ouchy $42,0 plus the stuff .. their doing in and around the $35ish range trade side.

Actually, he's not that bad off if he retails this dude, color is great for the area, miles are low and he has all the junk, plus Chargers territory would be a great area for a quick sale if he does it right .. Ah well, I'll be into the 90's before too long.

I'll update you on how the saga with the Q goes. The car retailed for $62K and he figured he got a great deal at $42K with only 14K miles on the odometer. The other car on his list then was a 2002 LS430 with 35K miles, but the Lex dealer didn't budge below $46K, which he thought was *high*, hence the Q. Oh well...

    Please don't laugh.

I just received the "buy-out offer" from the leasing company on my wife's fleet Taurus.

    2002 Taurus SE
    Red exterior
    Bucket Seats, power driver seat
    51,000 miles
    Clean condition
    New tires
A small ding on the bumper

She may be changing jobs. The lease company wants $5600 for what has been a reliable chariot.

What are they going for at retail???
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
The Ford dealer a mile from me has 20-30 used 2003 fleet Tauri with about 25K miles. Asking $9995. Ones with 'sliders' and lower miles are priced $10995

I'd say your 2002 would be $8499-8999 retail.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... $5,600.? .. thats a real good deal, Tomcat630 is all over this one, I would probably be *asking* $8,495 .. I have a feeling $7,5/$7,9ish is the target figure because of the miles ..

I was a little surprised at $5600, thought the buyout was going to be closer to $7500.

Going to wait a week and make a decision.

...... No, there's no points being deducted for living around the Kennedys .. actually you would pick up alot of points -if-, you could keep Ted sober for more than a year and help keep his "Ballerina like" figure under 300lbs or less, I guess all those bourbons and twinkies are killing his thought process .l.o.l..

Anyway, it's an 02 Axiom base 2wd, (no help there) with 24k .. these are kinda funny little rigs, dressed up with no place to go .. if it's clean, deep rubber, no I drove into the Chappaquiddick and forgot to tell anyone stuff .. depending on the dealer, trade side in and around the high $11's, low $12's, most dealers won't know what to do with this little dude ...

let me know how it goes ... :)
