** their school is about 25 miles from home **

              .. 25 miles away ..?!?

Might that be Reform school.? ........ :)

No, just the nearest good school where they can get their education mostly in English, instead of mostly in Catalan.

The reform school might not be a bad idea, though...

    Thanks again for your help.

2002 Honda Civic LX, titanium metallic with beige int. 18,600 miles, mostly highway. Auto, A/C, AM/FM cassette, PW, PL, cruise. No accidents, no repairs, regular maintenance. Very clean, basically perfect inside and out.
KBB and NADA show a private party price around $12,800 and trade-in between $10,000-11,000. What's a realistic price I should ask for it?

........... About a million of those just ran thru FAAO .. he probably paid $21/$21,5ish for it, auction fee $250, some transport action $200, a little service a little this and that $500, add the pack $400 .. yep, your right on the $$ ..

Can we spell m-i-l-e-s ..? .. Whoa, sounds like a pretty nice car all and all, but those miles are going to come up and slap ya right upside your head ... I'm thinkin' the mid to high $7's, "maybe" (and thats a Big maybe) the low low low low low $8's and thats "IF" it doesn't needs stuff -- what were you thinkin' ...?

    Hi Terry,
Can you help me with a trade-in value for 2000 Ford Expy XLT w/4.6L engine?. I am going shopping for either a 04 EXP or Durango soon. This Expedition had normal int, (no leather). Extras include AM/FM w/6CD stacker, fog lts, premium rims, aftermarket alarm system. White with gray interior, 101,000 miles. Michelen tires and new shocks 7/03. Good to Excellent shape. Mainly used to haul "stuff" so back seats hardly used. Regularly serviced. Cleans up nicely, Baseball sized dent above passenger side front windshield. I'm in Northern California. Thanks

thanks for informing me with all of your helpful knowledge, i didnt really think about the value down the road. your absolutely right, i am better off buying a new one, but i cant afford it.

i was also looking into VW jettas, toyota matrix and corollas and the new mazda 3's. looking into new vehicles except for the jettas as they are way out of my price range. i have been looking for used ones but their prices dont really depreciate that much. i've consider the gas mileage on the tdi and i like the 4 cyl turbo, but i've heard that models before 2002 tend to have annoying repairs. i know the toyotas are dependable and priced good(corolla) but the 3's are getting pretty good reviews and have great standard options for the price, as well as good gas mileage. these cars really appeal to me, but im looking for an economical car as gas is 2 bucks in texas and im heading off to college this fall.

i wouldnt mind starting off with a good car (instead of a truck) that i can afford(for the time being) and then trading it in a couple of years down the road for the tacoma that i've always wanted, but i dont know what im going to do yet. let me know what you think, and as always anyones helpful knowledge is always appreciated.

    Hey Terry:

This may be a little dejavu, as you answered my good friend Brian several posts back regarding his QX4...Bengals are looking sharp and the Reds are tied for first...good times in Cincy! Anyway, on to business. I have a 2002 QX4 as listed below and am looking to see what "real world" pricing I should expect for dealer trade. KBB states around $22,000 to $23,000 and consumer reports quotes $22,600. Here's the info:

    Cincinnati, Ohio
    Black and Bronze two-tone
    Black leather
    4X4
    moonroof with wind visor
    heated seats front and rear
    gold package
    nose mask
carpeted "Infiniti Logo" cargo mat (dealer option)
    22,500 miles
very clean, no dents or dings

    Thanks for your help.

....... ** Glad I waited and thought hard about it....... not to mention getting the reality checks in here **

You could be worse ... you could be like the *CPA* I met playing golf yesterday and he "just" traded in his 03 11k Freelander HSE in for a 04 2004 Toyota Prius hybrid ... he took a $5 grand hit on the Freelander and paid $1,000 OVER MSRP for the Prius, all in the name of saving money on gas with 11,000 miles a year ..

Now, I ain't no CPA and I barely made it out of HS, but based on my silly calculations it will take him 112,792 miles and 9 years just to break -Even- ... that man will never do MY taxes.! .. I'm sure with all his knowledge he's working on the Kerry campaign .l.o.l..

Trade '02 Accord SE for '01 Tacoma Pre/SR5/DblCab/4x2? by gtoddh May 20, 2004 (10:42 pm)
    Here are the details:
    '02 Accord SE
    4cyl, Auto, 32K miles, Silver
PW, PDL, CD/Cass, Power Slider, Power Mirrors
Air, Cruise, Tilt, Alloys, 1/3 tread left
    2 years into 3 year lease(12K miles/yr)
Lease buyout right now is $14,900

'01 Tacoma PreRunner SR5 Double Cab (no TRD)
    V6, Auto, 58K miles, Silver
PW, PDL, CD/Cass, Air, Tilt, (No Cruise)
    Alloys, Power Mirrors
Running Boards, Spray In Liner, Bed Extender
    Advertised internet price is $15980

My lease payments are $259/mo on the Accord. I'd like to trade it in and be OTD on the Tacoma at no more than $17K. Does this sound feasible? Should I be OTD for less? Should I wait until I'm closer to the lease end and shop for a Tacoma then? I really want to keep my payment close what it is now, hence the &17K ($278/mo for 72 mo @ 5.5%).

    I'm in Raleigh, NC area.

    Thanks for your input!

    Todd

     ==========================================

Hey Todd - Lot of folks from the Carolina's this week ..

02 Honda 4dr SE with 32k, 4 banger, silver in color with an auto and a slider .. if it's a clean one, ya know, no french fry invasions, no speed racer attacks, just a clean Accord .. then trade side, it's worth the ultra high $12's low low $13's, might "maybe" get a dealer to roll up to $13,5 - so your at least $1,500 in the bucket .. and the dealer is asking $15,9, so he's not whacked he probably has at least $14,5 in it .....

Here you do the math and tell me:

    $15,900 - sale price Yota
$13,500 - too much money for the Honda
    ___________

2,400 - Difference (IF this is possible)
      200 - for taxes and fee's
    ___________
    $2,600
    $14,900 - pay-off on Honda

    $17,500 - TBF (to be financed~ approx)

Your are close, depending on the real deal figures .. even for an extra $10/$15 bucks a month don't loose the vehicle you want, you know what they say:

"the Lord hates a coward" ..

Good luck and DON'T forget to let me know .......

got one for my sister-in-law, she's looking to move into a 99-2000 Accord. Currently, she's driving a:

    1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4dr, 4x4.
    102,xxx miles on the clock.
    4sp Automatic
Newer tires/brake combo (within the last 6 months)
    Power windows and locks
    Aftermarket el-cheapo CD-player
A/C just went out last week, she'll try to fix it before getting rid of it, as long as its cheap to fix.
Decent to a little on the rough side condition, not very clean
right now, has some damage on the right front to the
bumper/headlight assembly due to a little fender bender. Doesn't
look to me like it will clean up really good, it just hasn't been
taken care of really well, but we'll try to detail it a bit and
       clean it up before hand.
No other known issues (transmission problems, oil leaks, 4x4 issue, etc...)
Purple exterior, darker cloth interior (not sure of actual interior color)
    East Tennessee region

don't think I'm forgetting anything... I'm guessing maybe $4's b/c of the miles and condition? I know this is a tough one without seeeing it, its a good test. She's going to be buried in it, too. I feel sorry for her, but I objected when she purchased it a few years back.

Looks like the 99-00 Accords lx's are $7-8ish range..

    thank you sir.

Thanks for the help Terry. Not sure what I'm gonna do but either way I'll let you know.

If I decided to sell it privately and I don't have the title because the vehicle is still being financed, how do I go about completing the transaction? Don't know if it matters but the vehicle is financed through GMAC.

Could I get some private party retail info of ya?
    '99 Saab 9-3 base model.
Light green over tan cloth, 5 speed, no heated seats, no roof, but also no paintwork and no french fry invasions. 62,000 miles
    ===============================================

Oh man, I bet they have them lined up to buy this one .. handshaker, cloth, no slider, no heat, great color (Cough/sneeze/hack) well, at least the miles are low (in some parts of the Galaxy) .. trade side, maybe the ultra high $4's low $5's ..

Down the winding path to Retail Rd: as silly as this may sound "someone" somewhere could probably get some stiff money for this little beauty (properly serviced, deep round things with a great detail and a super ad) .. A Saab lover, a College student, someone that "needs" a sporty type, a person that wants to be truly different, somebody that's been in a coma for awhile and doesn't know that Eisenhower has been out of office for a few years ~ $8,900 *asking* and off it goes to La La Land for $7,5/$8,5 ............ ;^)

My lease matures on Oct 12 and I'm trying to purchase the vehicle to avoid my excess mileage penalties. I changed jobs 7 mos ago and I'm forcasting about 25-30 thousand miles over. Can you give me fair pricing to take to Bank One, they currently aren't willing to move off of the residual. The vehicle currently has 76000 miles with what I would classify as just normal wear. Or should I just pay the mileage penalty and walk away in Sept.
    Thanks, Caravan

I have a 100,000 mile ' 95 Gold Lexus sc 400 Coupe in Minneapolis with premium aftermarket wheels, Nakimichi audio, newer tires and still looks showroom new. glossy paint, no rust or dents, lovely interior, Drives beautifully. No known defects. No heated seats or traction control. Still feels like a new car.

I am thinking about a trade in for a 03 red Acura CLS with 26,000 miles, 6 speed manual 18" premium wheels no navigation offered at $24,500

What cash difference would represent a decent deal? I have $14 in mind. does that make sense?
    thank you!

reading your post, I'm a little confused with what you want to do.... do you want to buy it now? Or do you want to buy it in October... big difference. You can get an estimate of value now, compare to your buyout from Bank One and go from there... but it'll be hard to look into the crystal ball to figure out what it's worth in October...

Second, if you want an accurate estimate, please give us a little more detail.. options/packages, how are the tires? all service up to date (ie- tuneups, etc...) any accidents/bodywork/paintwork? color, location, any specifics on condition (scratch here, there, etc...)

    sincerely.

.......... Yep, you got lost with all the yacking going on .. but always feel free to Repost in a day or two cuz' I get lost myself .l.o.l..

By the way, great description .!

98 purple Cherokee 4dr Sport with a 6 banger, 4wd and we have the auto, new stoppers and rubber, 102k, the A/C coughed up a lung and it's lost it's eyeball appeal ..

Well we need some eyeballs, so get it detailed out, miles aren't too bad for the year, if we can bring it back to life with the service then trade side in and around the $3's, I think your pretty close with a "possible" "maybe" reach to the $4 figure, maybe .... "could" see $5/$5,5 on the Retail side depending on where she lives, the area of East Tennessee and the neiborhood, if ya know what I mean ....

Good luck and let me know how it goes ..

                            Terry.

........... We don't need no Stinkin' titles ..!

We just need immediate access to one - and thanks for letting me know who the lein holder is, cuz' GMAC is all over the place (now the 3rd largest Home mortgage lender on the planet) ..

call the 1-800# and tell them you have sold the little bugger, find out "where" the title is being held, it could be down the street, it could be 300 miles away, maybe there is an office close, maybe they will let a dealer do the stuff .. actually you can do this in about a 3hr flip (or less) if you do it correctly .. the funds get Wire transferred to the holding office, they fax and/or send it same day/next day air and "Wango Tango" it's done, you sold the bugger and off you go for another one ......

let me know how it goes ..... :)

Gheez, Terry, $3++ for the Cherokee? Bashed fender, warm breeze, unclean? Yikes.

I posted about the following puppy while you were in detox, so it got lost....

    ---------------------------
gray over gray 2000 Cherokee Sport, 6cyl auto 4x4 with 79k on the clock and the usual accoutrements. No smokes, no dog, newish tires/exhaust.

When I looked at it, I found:
Previous light rear-ender, bumper poorly repaired -- just cosmetic, though. Light rust EVERYWHERE; edge of the tailgate, pinch welds all around... I thought they had that fixed by '00???
The 4x4 was inoperative, or the indicator light was bad... Oil seepage from head gasket (or worse). Other than that, fairly tight car, good engine/transmission, as far as I could tell.
    -------------------------------------------------

Anyway, they were asking $8,700 and now it's, get this, $8,500... theyr'e still paying on it (and on an Odyssey, and on an L-series Saturn... real smart)... and I think they're out of their tree.

But maybe these are pretty strong in the market, I dunno... was looking for a summer "extra" car that would be easy to ditch in September/October.

With the light rust in a few places I think it's a dog.... but what is it worth?

BTW, I always feel I've done my job when I call or visit someone and then the asking price goes down.... now where's the ad in the paper for the '00 Outback with 97k for $16.... I'll give them a call...

    Happy Sunday!

I'm not really interested in purchasing the vehicle at all however, my thinking was that it was going to be the most economical way out of a bad lease. Residual is 17,333, buyout is 19,100, and I,m way over my mileage and that is only going to get worse. As far as options goes it has 6 disc changer, heated leather seats, AM/FM cassette, cruise, moonroof, I think the only thing it is lacking is power adjustable seats. I put 4 new tires on @ 62000 mi, no accidents, some(maybe 4) nick marks on the hood from rocks on the highway and the service is up to date. I'm in Chicago.
Sorry for the lack of info and thanks for your response

........ 00 with 80k, the dash lights up like a Christmas tree ..? .. dealer probably paid the low/mid $5's for it, maybe just maybe the low low low low low $6's if he's been sniffing glue .... no 4wd ..? .. that's a U-Pick em' - a quarter ..? .. in your area (or any yankee snow invaded area) it's not uncommon to see some of these dealers drop $250/$350 and do a little Prince Putty work on em', then turn them loose ...

My husband is on a search for a cheap truck camper so he doesn't have to tent camp on his hunting trip this year (he's getting old and wimpy). He had me take a look at one his friend has for sale. All I said when I called him to tell him my opinion was...."I want some of whatever it is he's smoking cause its gotta be good"

1992 Cascade 9 1/2 foot, in ok shape......nothing to write home about, water heater is toast, dings and dents, some broken clearance lights. All for the bargain price of $3k. I about choked. Its *maybe* a $1500 camper *IF* its puuurrrrffeect and everything works.

What the heck are people thinking when they pull a price outta the air??

As for your CPA and his *wise* move, I think he slept through school or something. Wow, even *I* wouldn't do that. We are a bit slower to make decisions these days....seems to be paying off I think.

My girlfriend has a 2000 Chevy Cavalier sedan, base model, with 104,000 miles on the odometer. The car is red, with automatic and air conditioning. The air conditioning doesn't work. The car lacks power windows and door locks. It looks like a car with 104,000 miles should look.

The valve lifters are bad (the engine ticks loudly), and she was told that she needs a rebuilt engine. The air conditioning is dead, as mentioned.

We live in Harrisburg, Pa. Can she expect ANYTHING on trade, or will she be lucky just to get the dealer to take it off her hands? She is looking at a used Civic or Sentra (or maybe a new Civic, if I can convince her to take the low-interest deals). Any guidance would be helpful. Thank you.

****The valve lifters are bad (the engine ticks loudly), and she was told that she needs a rebuilt engine.****

Um, My mom's 1996 Cavalier has had noisy lifters since about 50k miles. The car currently has 206k on it and she drives it 200 miles/day. All original and VERY reliable.

I looked at a 1998 Cavalier with 65k, it had noisy lifters too, but ran fine. I don't think noisy lifters are a death sentence, at least judging from my mom's Cavalier.

    Hello,

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram QuadCab 1500 2WD SLT. She has an 4.7 V8 w/ Automatic - A/C, PW, PL, Infinity Sound System, Line-X bedliner and Bushwacker bed/tailgate caps, along with tinted windows all around. New tires less than 10K ago. Currently has 80,500 miles.

I am thinking it is time for a new vehicle. Given how aggressive mfgs are with rebates I am thinking that I am going to get slammed on trade-in and am curious what trade-in value I should be looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Terry: Long story short. I will be going to New Jersey on June 4, 2004. I intend to help out my Brother and buy him some transportation. Now, I'm not rich, so funds are limited. I can only do around 4000-5000 tops.

Any advise on what to look for in this range?

Any suggestions as to where to look? I will be in Delran, NJ, which is about 30 minutes from Philadelphia.

I know this is not a lot of cash. Is there anything worth buying at this price?

Thanks for whatever advice you may have.

So your thinkin' your SC and $14 big ones, right.? .. hmm let's see, yours is a 95 SC400 with 100k big ones, color is ho-hum, we got the Nak, newer sneakers, you say it's clean, no kisses, no love taps, some sort of Alien wheels (might be better to take them off and put the originals on if they are nice and sell the others on Ebay) .. no heat no TC ..

Trade side: in and around the mid to high $6's, maybe "could" "might" find it's way towards $7,0 with the right dealer, correct barometric pressure and the proper alignment with Venus .... now theirs on the other hand is a 03 CL-S with a meat clever with 26k, some 18's and no nav for the remarkable price of $24,500 ... CPO .?

So whats all that mean ..? .. I dunno, maybe it's time for my nap ............ what it means is: they might have the mid to tall $19's in it with the stuff .. I gotta figure they have to make a little profit, nice cars usually get some money so we figure $21,5/$22,0 ..

    $21,500
    -$6,500
    _________
    =$15,000 difference

So guess what.? .. it seems your close, maybe they will do a little better, maybe they will do a little worse ~ but whatever they do, LET ME KNOW.!

                       Good luck.....!

                                 Terry.

......... Let me ponder this .. uuuh, aaahh, hmmm, Okay, I'm done pondering ~ does the name "Prizm" ring a bell with you ..?

Probably a 00, miles in the 50/60K range with the power pack, probably not a LSI, maybe an auto and a 99 for sure ... so where was I.? .. oh yeah watching Steve Flesch burning up the course at the Colonial ........... :)

Prizm, yes, that's your best bet.

Given that you'll have limited time and may have to branch out a little: Mazda Protege is a good bet. Lots of midsizers and up from GM; stick to the V6's... older Bonnevilles and LeSabres, just about any V6 Ciera/Century... these tend to do "ok" in the big-ticket department (engine/trans/AC).

GREAT deals can be had in Taurus' and Intrepids, but they are a little more iffy in the transmission... I'd stay away, unless you can plain steal one. MAYBE a Contour for the right price.

This has been hashed out at some length in the "Good, Cheap Beater Cars" discussion and others. Also, there is a link in my profile that might help you out.

Around here, the going rate for a 2001 Prizm; auto, base, power windows/locks with 40k is $6... try for the 4sp auto instead of the 3, or the stick if possible.

    Good luck, -Mathias

in my world, the first car i would look for is a 2000 focus with the clock reading around 50-60k. even an SE auto will be in the $5k-$5500 range.

a 99 taurus with the smaller v6 and around 70k miles will be the most reliable $5k car you can find...at least midsize.

if you dont need space, you can find a 98-99 ranger reg. cab in that range too.

We drove to Anchorage yesterday and back, that was a very nice trip. Explorer averaged 19.6 mpg. No sense in buying a small car, the savings just aren't there.

YAY! Glad you got that notion out of your head!

Banks won't negotiate on buyouts/residuals until the last payment is made... Once they think they might have to take the vehicle back, they change their tune... So, wait until September. Also, when asking for a residual reduction, never mention that you are over mileage... If they think they are going to get a $3000 check from you at turn-in, their incentive to lower the price goes away.

Also, its not likely you will come out ahead, buying out the car, then re-selling it, over paying the turn-in charges. Only buy it, if you are willing to drive it a couple more years.

Well, we had a 10 hours of driving to talk about it and decided that it didn't make any sense since the Explorer seems to have improved its gas mileage.

Of course hubby was pretty much against it from the start.....I found out why on Thursday. He's got toys on the brain. First on his list is a camper.......we'll see. MEN!!!

Maybe with any luck the Chevy will be running this week so we can SELL the darn thing.

    Hi Terry:

Maybe I missed your response. 1999 Honda Accord EX V-6 sedan, white with tan leather, 38,000 miles in North Texas. Any idea what trade-in vs. retail might be?

thank you Terry.... I was close, not sure if the sis-in-law will be able to squeeze out of this one yet, she is REALLY buried in it, but is very anxious to move it. My advice to her is to hold it and drive it for awhile, but you know how that goes.... :) I'll definately let you know what happens!

    thanks...

Thanks for all your input. I was mostly on the right track, just makes me feel better to hear (read) it from the experts.

    Thanks again,
