What the heck is "Catalan" .? .. isn't that the stuff you get between your toes .?

Well, depending on your perspective, Catalan is either:

    1) a rich and unique language with a long and important literary tradition, in many ways closer to French than to Spanish, spoken and fiercely defended by 8 million or so speakers along the Mediterranean coast of Spain and France and tiny bits of Italy, making it a more widely spoken language than, say, Swedish

    or

    2) a royal pain in the butt for people who have occasion to live and work in the aforementioned region and simply want to be able to communicate in the most efficient manner possible (which is to say in Spanish or in French)

We travel back and forth between the U.S. and Europe, but during the school year are mostly near Barcelona. All of the public schools and many of the private ones teach primarily in Catalan, and while our kids speak the language, somehow we suspect it might be a tad more useful down the road for them to be learning their various subjects in English. Hence the long commute to the "American School".

And that is probably rather too far off-topic, and a much more detailed answer than you or anyone wanted...

    Terry,

Interested in your take on the following:

    2001 BMW Z3/2.5L/5-speed manual/convertible
    Black with tan leather
    28k miles
    new Pilot Sports
    CD/Side airbags
Appears in top condition with all service records and CPO
Dealer in South Florida asking $27k, I'm thinking $25k tops.

    Thanks for your help

I posted this awful close to COB Friday and I think it was missed in the rush to the casino/country club/detox/whatever ;)
    ------------------------------------------------

I know I've asked a lot, and I appreciate the info, but I found yet another candidate on a local new car lot:

    1999 Olds Intrigue GLS
23500 miles (checked Csrfax...usage was 3-6K per year)
No sale green, tan leather guts
    No slider
    CD/Cassette + 12 disc changer in trunk

Trunk...brings me to a bad point. I smelled a horrible mildew smell. After test drive (man those things drive well), I pulled up the cover over the spare tire and there were puddles of water. Tire changing instructions look like they were wet at one time or another, too.

    They are asking $11,0

I'm thinking waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy less....$8,0 or so.

What say you, oh wise ones?

    Car is in Columbia, SC.

Not sure if I qualify as wise, but cars with water inside give me a real bad feeling. Unless it is something truly rare and desirable, IMO you are better off finding one without issues.

I looked at convertibles last fall, and saw a '98 or so BMW Z3 at a jeep dealer. not a bad car, but I noticed that the battery (in the trunk) was sitting in about 6 inches of water. I'm no engineer, but generally I like to keep my electricity and water separate. Turned out to be a leaking taillight gasket (or so I was told), but still put me off on that car, and the quality of the inspection the dealer did before putting it on the front row.

......... Let's see what this dude has going for it ..

Good history, it's a 5 speed, folks that drive the Z3's like those, it has 28k and thats a good thing, the miles are low and the Bimmer buyers like that, it has the CPO and thats definitely a good thing cuz' Bimmers ain't cheap to fix - hmm, what else .? .. it's a black color vehicle in Florida and it's 92 degree's and thats NOT a good thing ........

Dealer is asking $27,0 for a black unit in Florida in the month of May.? - did you see any dent's in his head from where he was struck from the meteorite ..? .. he paid the tall $18's maybe the low $19's for it, added some service, did a little Mr. Clean, dropped-in the CPO, maybe added a this or that, so it probably hit's the table at "around" the ultra high $19's low $20ish range ..... $27,0 is a great price if you live in the Ukraine ..... ......... :)

$22,9/$23,5 would be all the Peso's on the planet ~ it's black, it's Florida, it's hot and in another few weeks he will be making a planter out of it ........

                     Good luck, let me know.!

........ Miles are low low low, it's a GLS, no slider, color is ho-hum, tunes all over the place and it has a good history ....

Leaky trunk ..? .. I wouldn't get too psychotic about it, just yet - alot of the detail people have high pressure machines, could be the stripping has a crack and/or a small tear, they could have even sprayed it with the trunk lid open, who knows - a water test when it's dry will resolve that ..

$11 grand ...? .. thats a great price if you live in Peru .. I just bought a 99 GLS with 31k, new tires all the way around, service, leather, slider, tunes, right color and I paid too much at $7,600, that little dude sold for $9,900 .. maybe that will give you an idea ....

    Hi Terry:
Maybe I missed your response. 1999 Honda Accord EX V-6 sedan, white with tan leather, 38,000 miles in North Texas. Any idea what trade-in vs. retail might be?

    =============================================

No, I probably missed yours - I have the attention span of a asparagus ... sounds like it could be a nice one, it's a EX V6 with loooow miles, right color anywhere .. if it's nice, clean, serviced, deep round things, no re-paints, no soccer team invasions in the interior .. then trade side, in and around the tall $9's low $10's ..

Me personally, down Retail RD (IF~ it's super nice) $12,900 *asking* and off it goes to one of those cute little cheerleaders from Texas A&M for $11,5/$12,5 .. I "think" you guys pay tax on the difference figure in Texas, right.?

                             Terry.
  • dfd3dfd3 Member Posts: 57
Thanks for the reply, but now I am wondering about your, um, persuasion. You see, at Texas A&M, we do not have cheer leaders, we have yell leaders. ALL of our yell leaders are MALE. So, maybe they are cute to some, but they really don't turn me on, if you know what I mean! Now, the school mascot is a cute little collie named Reveille, hmmm..... (I'll pay for that last remark, but hey, I'm an Aggie! I have the right to make those type remarks!)

Yes, in Texas we pay sales tax on only the diff. between the trade and cost of the new vehicle. I don't really want the hassle of selling it outright.

I know..I know. The I30 is still available and is very nice but we are too far apart on price..he says 18,995 is the best he can do but I can't justify that when a brand spanking new '04 I35 is sitting there at 26,995. Over the weekend there was a "sold" tag on the car but this morning the tag was gone and the car is still on the lot so maybe there's still hope. Anyway, this 96 C280 I can get for 12.8k (they were asking 13.5)with one year starmark or 14k with warranty out to 3 years. I didn't think it was a very good deal so thanks. My time is running out so I have to keep looking. I'll keep you posted and thanks for the help.

Hi Terry, Below is a repost of earlier inquiry - I still need some help with a "real world" trade in value. Thanks ahead for your help, and sorry if I missed your response.

    #19340 of 19406 2000 Ford 4x4 Expedition XLT by poidog May 22, 2004 (7:36 pm)
    Hi Terry,
Can you help me with a trade-in value for 2000 Ford Expy XLT w/4.6L engine?. I am going shopping for either a 04 EXP or Durango soon. This Expedition had normal int, (no leather). Extras include AM/FM w/6CD stacker, fog lts, premium rims, aftermarket alarm system. White with gray interior, 101,000 miles. Michelen tires and new shocks 7/03. Good to Excellent shape. Mainly used to haul "stuff" so back seats hardly used. Regularly serviced. Cleans up nicely, Baseball sized dent above passenger side front windshield. I'm in Northern California. Thanks

    Terry,

Thanks for the quick feedback. The rest of the story is the dealer is willing to take me out of the last nine months of my current lease which he values at $3,300 ($23.4 payoff less $20.1 residual). The leased vehicle is as follows:

    2002 BMW 325i/4 dr/automatic
43k miles (freeway commute with garage at both ends)
Grey Green Metallic with tan leather
Premium package (sunroof, power seats, on-board computer)
All service up to date, clean, shiny a few small dings
    5k on OEM Continental tires

My commute has changed, so I will make the 45k milage limit in Feb 05. With the new car interest rates available on CPO, I could reduce my monthly payment, if I am willing to essentially capitalize the negative equity into the lease over 5 years.

Based on this, is $27 less $3.3 or $24.7k, the correct way to look at a comparible number to your $22.9/$23.5 range? How much more room do you think the dealer has?

    Thanks again
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
Thanks. The car would be used as a commutermobile for Mrs. Lance, so the present miles wouldn't be a factor as they'd be added to in short order. She actually likes that color (!) but the co-worker who owns it got cold feet...she's going back to school and was gonna sell the car, but I think she's decided to keep it. Would have been a good runabout at a good price...eh well. So's the Accord.

I can't believe you help this way. This is great. I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey EX.
    110,000 miles
    Silver exterior
    Cloth interior
    CD/cassette
    power sliding doors
universal transceiver - garage door opener
    minor door dings
one or two rust spots the size of a pencil eraser head
    tires are in good shape.

Is this worth 10k on a dealer trade-in?

    Thanks!

    ill take this one...

plusses...its a honda. its an ex. footprints are ok, and the tapes are there.

minuses...parked too close, 110k miles on a 4 year old car...that will down right BURY you, and its beginning a color change to brown...

my guess here...and if you want, terry will give his opinion too, will be that if the interior is fully detailed, you COULD get AROUND the $8500 range...MAYBE into the low low low $9k's.

with a perfect exterior and no maintenance needed, THEN the 5-figure range is POSSIBLE.

the problem here is that you have a van that cant be warrantied or financed...cash only...and most folks (myself included) dont have $12-$13k in cash to drop on a 110k mile van.

on the retail side, i would ASK $11k, and if the 5-figure threshold comes into play, TAKE IT and RUN RUN RUN!!!

    good luck!

........ Aaah huh, another Exploder ..

We have the XLT, 4x4, 5.0 V8, cloth, new rubber and you say it's in almost EXCELLENT shape --- it Can't be, it's got One Hundred thousand miles on that bugger, but I will take your word that you have taken good care of it and it's lookin' like 50k with a hair lip, new bouncers with nice wheels, plus you live down the street from Aaarnold ...

"IF" and the word here is IF, if it's clean as you think it is, then trade side, in and around the low to mid $7's ..... sounds like a Retail Rd "quick sale" too me, $9,900 *asking* and off it goes for $8,5/$9,5 .....

Whatever you do - Don't let me know .l.o.l..

    Hi,
I am going to trade-in my old car to get a new Acura TSX. I would like to know about the trade-in value of my old car. Its specs are:

    Nissan Sentra, Limited Edition, 1994-95
    Black, 4-speed automatic, 4 cylinder 110HP, FWD,
167K miles, No serious engine problem, one dent in the rear, 160W Kenwood CD audio system.

"No serious engine problem" Does this mean there are minor engine problems?

How about retail side: Assuming it is deep in rubber, NO dents or rust and good paint, you could see in the range of $1000-$1500 if it needs nothing for a daily driver. Given a dent, who knows, even a small dent will kill the value by another $500 or so. Retail side $500-$1000 if the tires are good and it will pass inspection.

Trade side: $10-$100 . Face it, who wants a 10 year old car with 170K on the clock and a big dent in the rear.

    Hello,

Hate to be a pain in the butt... but am reposting. ;) I am either going to trade out or buy a boat and run this truck into the ground as a tow vehicle! I have no idea what she would be worth...

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram QuadCab 1500 2WD SLT. She has an 4.7 V8 w/ Automatic - A/C, PW, PL, Infinity Sound System, Line-X bedliner and Bushwacker bed/tailgate caps, along with tinted windows all around. New tires less than 10K ago. Currently has 80,500 miles.

I am thinking it is time for a new vehicle. Given how aggressive mfgs are with rebates I am thinking that I am going to get slammed on trade-in and am curious what trade-in value I should be looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------
bowke28 - do you spend time OUT OF the truck?!?!

Not nearly as much as I'd like to!

I've been reading this forum for a loooonnnnngggg time, and never had I laughed so hard at one of Terry's recent post (see below) in response to lancerfixer's Saab "wish" (what else does Lancerfixer ever want to buy except Saabs...?).

Oh man, I bet they have them lined up to buy this one .. handshaker, cloth, no slider, no heat, great color (Cough/sneeze/hack) well, at least the miles are low (in some parts of the Galaxy) .. trade side, maybe the ultra high $4's low $5's ..

Down the winding path to Retail Rd: as silly as this may sound "someone" somewhere could probably get some stiff money for this little beauty (properly serviced, deep round things with a great detail and a super ad) .. A Saab lover, a College student, someone that "needs" a sporty type, a person that wants to be truly different, somebody that's been in a coma for awhile and doesn't know that Eisenhower has been out of office for a few years ~ $8,900 *asking* and off it goes to La La Land for $7,5/$8,5 ............ ;^)

We will be trading our 2001 Subaru Legacy in to help buy a used minivan.
Should we have it detailed in and out?
The carpets need cleaning as we have three children and two dogs. It is nothing serious just the look of a busy family with dogs. No tears or anything like that. No interior scratches, dings or cracks.
There are two minor scratches on the car. Maybe from a branch or something. The windshield has a crack too. Should we fix that or just know that we will have it deducted from trade in?
     Thanks

    Hi,

Could you please advise on trade-in value on:

    - Mitsubishi 300GT 2Dr STD Hatchback
    - Mileage 108000
    - Condition - Good

The Edmunds shows about $5,400 as tradein value. Some dealers say $3,500 (without even looking). I am confused with such big difference.

    Help! Thanks!

People aren't exactly lining up to get a used 3000GT, but Terry will need a lot more information on the car to provide an answer:
    Location
    Year
    Color
    Transmission
    Options
Dents, dings, scratches, curbed wheels outside
    Rips, tears, stains, etc. inside
    Any bodywork that was done
    Running condition
    Condition of tires

    I. The Catalan Language: Introduction
    1. The Catalan Language

Catalan, a language spoken by a population of around ten million, is, as French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Rumanian, a neo-latin language, that is, a language derived from Latin.
Catalan is spoken mainly in the nort-eastern region of Spain (Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands), with notable encroachments in the South of France (Roussillon) and even in Italy (in the town of Alguer, on the island of Sardinia.) (see the map).
Because of its geographical location, Catalan has many features in common with Spanish (particularly in its morphology) and French (particularly in its phonetic system and vocabulary). It is particularly similar to Occitan languages and Old Provençal.
According to some sources, the distribution of Catalan speakers is as follows:
in Spain (Catalonia, Valencia, and Balearic Islands) ± 9,100,000; in Andorra ± 38,000; in France ± 330,000; and finally in Alguer (Italy) ± 37,000, for a total of more than ten million people.
The Catalan language is fairly homogeneous, although exist two main dialects or variants: the western (which includes Valencia, the western part of Catalonia and the eastern fringe of Aragon) and the eastern (which includes the rest of Catalonia, the Roussillon, the Balearics islands and Alguer). Nevertheless, the differences are minimal and affect almost exclusively the pronunciation of the unstressed vowels, and they do not create problems of intecomprehension. In this Catalan Grammar, we will insist on the eastern Catalan, mentioning only once and a while, some other dialectal modalities.
It is quite important to notice that of the 56 languages spoken in Europe, Catalan occupies the 21st. place in terms of the number of speakers, ahead of Danish, Norwegian, Eslovac, Basque, etc. In terms of geography, the Catalan speaking territories are larger than Holland, Belgium, Denmark or Switzerland.
Today, Catalan is the official language of the republic of Andorra. In Spain, in the regions where Catalan is the autochthonous language, it shares the co-officiality with Spanish. But this situation has not been the same through the long and difficult history of Catalan, a language without a state and consequently in an unstable condition. Not long ago, for example, it was practically forbidden to speak Catalan by the totalitarian regime of Franco; but after his death and the introduction of the democracy in Spain, Catalan has almost regained its pre Civil-War status.
Now, the government of Catalonia in Barcelona is trying to implement a linguistic policy of "normalization," i. e., an attempt to create the necessary equilibrium between Catalan and Spanish languages throughout the Catalan speaking countries.

Hey, you learn something new everyday .. thanks for the info.!

                               Terry.

What kind of boat are you thinking of getting .?

02 Dough Je' Ram Quad cab SLT, it's a 2wd, small V8, auto, power pack and 81,000 big miles coming at ya .... the miles are gonna kill ya, if it's super nice and clean and it looks like 30k, then trade side in and around the high $13's, maybe the low low $14's, the miles aren't your friend here .....

definitely on the detail, especially with kids and dogs involved - with the environment you're describing, leaving it "as is" can easily cost you $750-1000 because a dirty car is assumed to be a non-maintained car.

While not totally conclusive, it's a pretty good match where people who keep their cars clean also maintain them well - the opposite is true for dirty cars - at least that's the natural assumption that will cost YOU money.

Replace the windshield - the used car guy will look at the crack at hit your car for $500-600 - getting the windshield replaced is a snap - pay your deductible (or not in some cases) and shops like Diamond Glass will come to your house or job for the replacement - it couldn't be easier.

$100-150 on a good detail and a new windshield will make you some money - probably $750-1250 depending on the used car manager...

    Terry,

I'm looking at an 04 Infiniti (yes, it ends with an "i") fx 35 to replace the landcruncher and I noticed on the infiniti board that several people have been buying these at herb chambers infiniti in boston at incredible prices. The one most recently had a msrp of 39540, invoice around 36200, and was bought for 34399. How in the world can they do this? There must be some dealer cash that is not noted here on edmunds or they just want to "move the meat" so to speak.

    $200 taxes and flea's (approx)

Jesus christ....that's a scream. Everybody around my cube thinks I've lost my marbles, I'm laughing so hard. I'm definetly adopting that one into my repertoire.

I noticed on the infiniti board

Which board(s) do you read? Freshalloy is beginning to suck IMHO. The forum has crashed so many times, everybody seems to be jumping ship.

    Terry,

Thought you would be interested in the outcome. The Z3 was sold last night after less than 2 weeks on the lot. (2001/2.5/black/manual/CPO 28k miles - $28k sticker). And no, I wasn't the buyer.

    Thanks for the guidance
