I made a very silly mistake. My keyboarding skills (or lack thereof) put in the wrong year for the Saturn. So bowke28, thanx for the advice, but here we go again....

    Hi Terry,

Could you advise me on the following?

For Purchase at a Ford dealership in South Carolina:

    2003 Ford Taurus SES
-Beige exterior and two-tone beige interior
-Exceptionally clean, two shallow (approx. 1/2 inch) scratches on rear
-21,000 miles-- previously privately owned, not fleet
-all standard equipment and no extras (not the SES Sport five-seater, but the SES Standard with bench seat in front)
-two new tires, two with at least 70% tread remaining
    -Clean CarFax
    -no extended warranty

What should I expect to pay?

    Trading In:
    -1996 Saturn SL1
-options are automatic, power door locks, cassette player, ABS and traction control, center console with lock, and meticuluously maintained floormats (not a stain on them)
    -beige with beige interior
    -nonsmoker; extremely clean
    -145,000 miles
    -brand-new, 60K mile tires
-excellent condition with complete service record from purchase
-tire covers are scratched up a bit
-roof has three two-inch shallow scratches; hood has one one-inch medium-depth scratch
    -brand new alternator
    -no rust
-everything (including A/C) in working order

What can I expect for trade-in, versus privately selling? It's a good car, but I know it's quite basic.

    Thanks.

I found a SOlara convertible that my wifee really wants me to buy, so I need to thin the herd to do it. What is realistic for trade and retail for both of these (in NJ, by Phila):

1999 Maxima SE, silver/gold, roof, power seat, cd, recent sneaks, cloth guts, 5 speed (yeah, I know, I know). Runs like new, cleans up nice in/out. A few nicks/scratchs, but nothing major. 48,000 miles

2001 Miata, 43,000 clicks, new sneaks, base model so cloth insides, 5 speed. Red, details to look real good, other than a few scratches that need to be touched up. Runs fine, just did a full tune up. Needs nothing as far as I can tell. At least the weather is finally nice for it.

I anticipate having to take both down retail road (especially the Max), both for S&Gs, toss in trade estimate. The Toy dealer hit the Max at 6,500, maybe 7,000 to do the deal. This was based on MSRP for the new one.

Of course, if I don't figure this out real quick, the Solara will be gone anyway.

r-12 was discontinued after the 1993 model year. anything 1994 or newer already has r134a in it. anything 1992 or older has r12 in it. the 1993s are either/or.

Not so. I have a 1994 Mazda RX-7, and it has R-12 in it. The 1995 RX-7s have R-134a. Typically, the above is true, but it isn't a hard and fast rule....the only hard and fast rule is the fittings on the system.
  • spatulamanspatulaman Member Posts: 157
No, all of this doom-and-gloom with Freon conversions has turned out to be much less of a hassle.

Once the system is empty, you just refill with R134a + some oil compatible with R134a. The kits are available at the supermarket and are cheap.

This is true, but it is important to note that most converted cars will suffer from diminished A/C cooling capacity. Every car I've ever dealt with that's been converted had unacceptable performance. One was so bad that the partial charge of R-12 cooled better than the "correct" (if there is such a thing for a converted system) charge of R-134a.

    hyundai tiburon by melmel
2001 tiburon, cobalt blue, sliding sunroof, 5 speed, power windows, cd player, spoiler, good condition inside and out 48000 miles. how much can i get for it?
    =====================================

What can you get for it ..? I dunno, maybe the cooties ...?!?!

If it's clean, deep round things, serviced, no paint em's by Paul, no I dropped battery acid on the seats .. then trade side in and around the mid to high $4's, "might" get Real lucky and see the low low low low low low $5's, but I have a feelin' the handshaker and the miles will hold this one back, waaaay back.

May the Force be with you ...

... Happy Holiday Melissa ..... thats a pretty bad description - you must be a blonde ..

How about that 2WD/4WD stuff, and while your at it, how about throwing in that V6/V8 thing .. I got the long bed/quad part down, oh, while your thinkin' about it, how about that shifty thing that can make it go faster or slow it down (and I don't mean the gas peddle) ....... thanks ......... :)

....... Well lets see .. oh no.! not tall miles on a Camry, this must be the very First.! can I get it's autograph .....?

We have that wonderful Polo green with the gold pack, it's a LE V6, we have cold breeze, power pack, ABS and we have a "Class action suit" against the car wash, if the rubber is deep and it "feels" like 60/70k, service records hanging from the dash, super mop n' glo, finish any service .. $2,950 *asking* and off it goes for $2,2/$2,5 right place, right ad it won't last long ....

Keep me in the circle ..... :)

Hi All, Getting Itchy with a 2002 jeep liberty sport Silver in South Florida with almost 40,000. Automatic, 2WD, power, cruise, tint, cloth. Nice reliable vehicle, but getting a little board and looking at the new jeep unlimited, Nice package. What might I expect retail or and come trade time on a new jeep.
    ==========================================

Duh.! Speaking of blonde moments, it does say South Florida .. I used to keep a boat in Jupiter (and I don't mean the planet) ... I'm going to call this one with a 4 banger, unless I'm going blind again I don't see it ......

We have the right color, 2wd, miles are a little stiff, auto, power pack .. if the rubber is deep and the air is Arctic, no lumps bumps or dips and the service is 100% .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $10's, maybe the tall $10's if it needs -0- .... IF, it's the 6 banger it's going to be worth the low to mid $11's ...

Down Retail Rd, ultra clean, finish the service, superb ad .. $13,9 *asking* and off it goes to one of the slick ones at Shooters for $12,9/$13,5 .. the 4 banger will be "about" a ghee whiz less.

I only did this cuz' I missed the SF part ...... gheeez, where's my meds.?

                       Terry.

Due to gas price shock and my 120 mile/ day commute, I am considering replacing my Jeep Cherokee one year sooner than I originally intended with a Honda Civic coupe. I don't have a car in mind , but I'm looking for something like this:

2002 Honda Civic Coupe LX, 5 SPD, typical Honda LX options, silver black or white high 20's low 30's on miles

I will probably keep the Jeep as a third car because it makes a good hauler and snow vehicle, but here are the spec's anyway:
1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic, white, auto, 4X4 (full time, not part time), cold air, cruise, tires have about 20% tread left, paint still shines (it details real nice looks like 40K miles), but has some scratches on it, interior clean, the only rust is on the driver's door pinch weld ( you have to be looking for it to find it). When parked, drips one drop of oil each night, probably the rear main seal. 136,000 big miles. I live near Newburgh, NY. Thanks in advance.

    wow...[non-permissible content removed] unit...

the books can all say what you want them to say, but there is no way a dealer will give you anywhere close to what the books say.

miles are low, and trailer brakes are good.

trade-in side, you should be looking at around the high $9k's to the low low low $10's.

on the retail side, a nice ad should run around the $13k figure. if you are lucky, then the same type of person as you will call and give you asking price, but your average truck buyer wont want a 4x4 baswe.

It really does not matter to a dealer what the Kelly Blue Book or any other source recommends for a trade in. I have sold cars in Florida and Ohio and both places used what they referred to as the Black Book Value. This is what a dealer can go to auction and buy a similar car for. Plus remember that Kelly Blue book, the credit union, nor your bank will buy your car, so it truly does not matter what they say it is worth.

A quality dealership will also go over the car and put some money into it before showing it on the lot.

Selling cars is not a fun job. I used to be a locomotive engineer. And tried selling cars for some extra pocket change. No matter how honest a salesman is, buyers are suspect. Plus most of them are angry because they are upside down,(owe more than the car is worth), or the warranty is up and the car is falling apart, etc etc... When I would tell people the truth and even suggest they go to a book store and buy a buyers guide for a car or truck they thought I had a hidden agenda. So just try to be as informed as possible.

Good luck with the trade in, and remember one thing the longer you keep it the less it is worth!

Bowke, we need to get into the "real world" ... I'm sure in your town and/or your county and obviously in your particular store you guys wouldn't have a home for it, but you could run it up to the Mid-America auction and see all of the $13ish figure and I would betcha a bunch more than that, clean low mileage 99's are doing more than that -- no miles, auto, 4x4 ..?!? give me a dozen of them .... $9/$10 ..? maybe on the far side of Neptune ...

I went to the infiniti dealer on saturday and took a test drive in a fx35 - pretty nice. As I came in I noticed that they had an exact clone of my vehicle- except a 2001 with 2k more miles than mine. They really didn't want it, per the manager because of already having one and they also weren't thrilled with a large v8 to resell. They only offered $23500 with a whopping $500 off the fx. I obviously passed.

Thanks for the info as always,
What fx color combo do you like Terry?
    I'll keep looking

That dealers seem to be allergic to anything with a V10 in it. Our beautiful 1999 Ram 3500 dually reg cab V10/auto/4x4, SLT Laramie, Red/gray, with all of 18k on it is only worth MAYBE $7k to a dealer. (at least according to the dealers) Its beautiful, looks and drives like a new truck. Good thing hubby loves his truck cause he's married to it.

Then again I'm married to my Explodeder too. I did have thoughts about sending it down retail road for $20k just to be out from under it.......especially with things the way they are right now. But, I like my truck.

    Learned Friends,

After yet another canoe trip with this ridiculous rig: http://www.msu.edu/~steine13/car.jpg,
I think I'm ready for an old van and a cheap commuter instead. You wouldn't believe how the nose of the canoe gets blown around in a side wind. Lousy sissy roof rack...

    Anyway, howze about this:
    2000 Prizm LSi; in-service June 2000 = 4 yrs old

Red with 73k big miles -- "all hiway" of course.

Needs tires, has a small dent in driver's door.
side bags, auto :-(, power sunroof, remote entry, and the usual power stuff & cruise.

Non-smokers, no accidents, no scratches, "occasional" transport of a dog. I think it's worth a look, but what's' it worth in $$$?

They're asking $5,900 and said they looked in kbb "retail". And they said they're "flexible".

    Thanks in advance as always,

    Hi Terry,
Just dropping in real quick to see what I could expect for:

    Northern VA/DC area
    2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS Coupe
    Black/Grey Leather Interior
    20,400 miles
    All power, sunroof, chrome wheels..

It just blew the entire steering unit (rack and pinion + motor + hoses) for a cool $1700. My fiance wants out before anything goes...

Appearance wise it looks great though, couple of small nicks here and there, and the leather is still in top shape inside.

    Terry,

Thanks! Your estimate of the L.A.-area trade value for my 2003 Odyssey EX-L RES was right on the screws at $23K. They offered $22,5 then upped the ante per my "request." I traded in the injured/repaired 03 to lease an 04 EX-L dirt cheap ($950 under invoice, .00123 money factor from Honda, no cash out of pocket, 24 months). No more throwing good money after bad. In two years I gotta figure out what to do for an encore, meantime my payment drops by over 40%. What a difference a year and a half makes.

Also picked up the 04 Acura TL non-navi auto last week. I'm in love....that car is so smooth, so fast, so high-tech and so comfy I can't get over it. Feels like a caged beast in normal driving, then really delivers when you need to put the hammer down. Surprised the #%@ out of a jerk in a 'Vette who tried to cut me off today.

    Thanks again--

To a dealer, it's a $4,500 vehicle, but *IF it needs stuff, start deducting .... these little dudes have depreciated about $500 in the last 12/13 months (no matter what those friggin' books say) .. I'm paying $6,5 for clean 01 LSI's with the wheels, ABS power pack and 25/35k, throw the slider in there and it's close to $7,0 and I'm glad to get em' - I think the secret is out .l.o.l...

Thanks for the info on the Prizm... with the 73k, I woulda thought $4, but these do run forever... my last one (93 'rolla) is still going strong for someone else with 215k or so... I'll try to get it for $5 if I like it...and "less" if the door ding is bad.

"no abs" -- they didn't say; i'd bet $50 it's got abs; it's always there, it seems, with side bags.

BTW, the canoe setup is fairly solid, everything double-strapped, I ain't stupid... but it's not the same as a "shorty" Chevy van going down the road.. uuuuh I can feel the looove...

    Thanks again,

......... Thanks for reposting, between my paint by numbers classes and my sweater knitting I get off the track ................... :)

2003 Ford Taurus SES: base, no 5 rider, no leather no slider with 21k, basically it's a SES with a big delete package - Duratec V6.?
    (makes a big difference)

Miles are kinda maybe ok, rubber is ok , dealer probably paid the ultra super high $8's low $9's -IF- it's a NON Duratec V6, add a this and that and it probably hits the table at "in and around" the high $9's - all the money on the planet would be the mid to high $10's ...

    1996 Saturn SL1: Yeow, 145,000 miles ..! *maybe* $500/$700 trade side ....

Let me know how it goes ..

** United States Air Force:26 Years, and Proud of it! **

Hey Jim ~ you "should" be proud, it's guys like you that makes it possible for things like Edmunds, golf courses, Best Buys, 27 different religions and MTV to survive ..

So anything for a Vet .. I sent out a bunch of packages to our guys via "Operation Gratitude", check it out when you get some time .....

                      Good description, Tanks (get it?)

Anyway, we have a 02 4dr ES V6 with loooow miles, color is super right for Lubbock, what can I say, it's been stored in your garage, no runs no hits no errors ... trade side, in and around the super tall $15's low $16's ... down Retail Rd, super duper 5 liner Ad, great detail and we have $17,9 *asking* and $17,5 gets a Dallas Cheerleader a new vehicle .. what saves this bad boy is the EX V6 thing and the loooow miles, plus it's the "old" body style and the new one is Not sending any hearts a flutter ...

(Free Map with Purchase) .l.o.l. good point ...

The 04 is probably worth in and around the ultra high $19's low $20's, "might" maybe get a starving dealer to stroll towards the $21 figure on a good day, the new body style just isn't giving site back to the blind ....

                      Let me know ....

....... I'm short on time today .. the manager, could he spell Landcruiser ..?

The colors that "seem" to be losing steam is the Copper and the red .. your in Indiana, right.? darker colors work in that area but they are a pain to keep clean, get a color -"you"- like, but stay away from the Art Deco market .. Benz/Lexus/Infiniti is a good example, the brownish tanish day-glo copperish color is taking about a $2grand hit at trade time .. in 20/25 months there will be more banana yellows, porpoise purples that the market can stand ....

let me know how it goes ...

my point was that a v10 in the age of $2 gas is a horrible truck for someone to want. the only GOOD money that this truck will bring is on a farm...so when its plantin' time in march, you might bring $15k-$16k down retail road.

for a suburban dealer, this is a worthless [non-permissible content removed] unit.

Recently had a new baby, so we need larger vehicle. Looking at a Honda Odyssey (yikes...not a minivan!!!).

Anyways, could you give me an idea what to expect on trade-in for a 2002 Jeep Liberty LTD, 4WD. Has 21k miles. Garage kept...outstanding condition..no stains, paint chips, etc. Optional equip includes, Power Seats, Heated Leather Seats, AM/FM/Cassette/CD, Alarm System, Power Heated Ext. Mirrors, Tow Package, Power Moonroof, Privacy Glass, Selec-Trak 4WD system, custom molded Jeep body color running boards. Stone White color. All service records. Tires with at least 50% tread life left.

What should I expect a dealer to offer me for it??

    Thanks for your help!
