Since 1987, I have owned the following:

    1980 Mazda RX-7
    1994 Nissan 300ZX ragtop
    1999.5 Nissan Pathfinder

And I still have the Z and the Pathy. At this rate, I'm never going to qualify for CCB membership.

My dad and I went to a dealership and they offered $10,000 for the Passat.I couldn't part ways with it yet so I decided to keep the Passat We did end up getting a 2005 MB C230 Sport Sedan though. It's really nice. Thanks alot.

Seems totally OT, but here goes (my cars since 1985 when I got my driver's license):

    71 Buick Electra 225 sedan
77 Chevy Caprice sedan (shared with twin bro)
85 VW Golf sedan 5-speed (sold to twin bro)
    80 Subaru DL hatch 5-speed (w/no 3rd gear)
85 VW Jetta GL sedan 5-speed (sold to bro's GF)
    86 SAAB 900S automatic sedan
    90 Mazda Protege LX 5-speed
89 VW Golf GL Wolfsburg Edition 5-speed sedan
    90 SAAB 900S 3-door 5-speed
87 Honda Accord DX 5-speed sedan

    twin brother:

    aforementioned 77 Caprice
    aforementioned 85 Golf
91 VW GTI 16v (the biggest lemon EVER!!!)
    84 VW GTI rustbucket
    84 Toyota Tercel 5-door 5-speed
    87 SAAB 900S 5-speed sedan
    85 SAAB 900 SPG
91 Jeep Wrangler 5-speed 4-cyl (payment on debt)
    96 Chevy S10 Blazer 4-door (current)

So that's ~18 cars between the two of us, with me not having a car at all from ~1991-97 and intermittently thereafter, including now. I'm seriously considering buying another beater, though not as junky or cheap as the last one (the $500 Accord money pit). Looking at $2k cars; I figure I should be able to get one that's reliable enough to take to mom's (200 miles away) and not totally embarrassing to be seen in, hopefully!

On that note, and to stay on-topic, I saw the following recently:

    92 Accord EX sedan automatic
    127k
    black, tan cloth
    ABS, alloys, roof
looks nice, drives nice, no rust!
asking $2200, could probably do $2k

92 Toyota Camry LE sedan 5-speed
    period green with tan cloth
    power windows, locks
    141k miles
    $1895, haven't seen it yet

I'm inclined toward the Camry cuz of the 5-speed, whadya'll think I should be looking at? Want good mileage, reasonable repair cost, somthing not to big but not too small.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
If you plan to drive them until the wheels fall off, it doesn't matter, but if not, the Honda will be a lot easier to sell later. Low miles, and pretty tempting at that price. I had a '91 LX and a '93 SE. Great cars.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I just checked, the Camry is sold anyway. I also saw an '89 Camry V6 5-speed, sounds kinda fun and it's only $1500. Doubt that would be the best choice, almost 16 years old and a stick shift with V6. How's the reliability of those earlier Toyota V6s anyway (I'm guessing OK, but haven't heard much)?
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
The only feedback I can give you concerning Toyota V6s is to tell you that I have a '96 Avalon with 158k miles, and it's been perfect. That doesn't include the power steering pump or rack which were both replaced this year to the tune of $1700! Ouch! Hondas and Toyotas both seem to run forever if properly cared for. I sold the '91 Accord back in 2001 for $2500 with 208k miles. It's in the 240s now and still running.

........... I'm sure they would "show" you $10,0 on paper, but the real figure would be in the mid/high $7's, might see the low low low low low $8's ..

All the dealer did was put you on a "ball", so you couldn't shop his figure and you fell for it ... a dealer isn't going to put $10 in your vehicle when they can buy them tomorrow at the auction for the low $8's, besides $10 is a retail figure .......

Had two nibbles on the 740 yesterday. One father and son, and a young couple driving a sweet '98 V70 T5. The one guy was trying to convince his partner it'd be a good beat-around-town car, but I don't think it worked. Oh, well.

Can anyone tell me what to expect for my trade-in:
2002 Toyota RAV4 4-WD, silver metallic, auto, air, pwr locks, cruise, windows, CD, keyless entry, alloy wheels, roof rails, just under 48,000 miles
I am afraid I will get dinged because the truck has been in 2 accidents. I rear-ended someone once ($6000 damage) and somebody tapped me on the back once (only $500). All has been fixed, and there is literally not a scratch on it now. Interior is flawless, too. However, I know that accidents really affect trade-in value.
I am in the Detroit area, so not as many Toyotas here as other places. I also plan to be trading at a Lexus, BMW or Audi dealer. Does that matter in terms of trade in value?
Any idea what to expect? Thanks for your help.

=== The 6 Big ones won't help thats for sure, the color is good, miles are ho-hum, it's a 4wd with a power pack .. this is a hard one to hit, it will "all" depend on the finished product, it could be a Maaco job with all used parts .. it's worth "somewhere" in the $7 to the $14 zipcode ...

    Hey all --

I've got a 97 Ford Explorer XLT, 70K miles, V6 SOHC, FWD, power everything, leather, 6 CD changer, rear air. It's been in a few small accidents requiring some body work, but they've been fully repaired by a quality shop. There's a rattle from some loose something or other underneath, but otherwise is in good mechanical shape. I'm just outside DC in Northern Virginia. Any thoughts on a good trade-in number?
    Thanks!

=== 4 door ..? .. And it's a 4wd (some birdy told me) .. ** It's been in a few small accidents requiring some body work, but they've been fully repaired by a quality shop ** - another one thats going to be hard to hit (so to speak) with body work .. the miles are low for the year, it's a XLT, dual breeze, power pack with some dead animal on the seats .. trade side *(depending on the color, how many doors and the body work) it's worth in and around the $3,5/$5,5 range .....

better descriptions get better numbers .......

I am still curious about this though:

    1999 Lexus RX300 AWD
    Gold exterior with tan leather
    36,000 miles
Leather, roof, heated seats .. typical Lexus equipment
Exterior looks great with maybe a few small scratches
Interior is spotless .. no french fry colonies to speak of
Tires look newer ... maybe 50% tread life left.
Only problem is that it was in an accident. The rear frame rails were rewelded near the rear impact bar.
I could've grabbed it for $15,000 in Atlanta ... was it worth it?

==== This must be accident week .. color is ok, miles are low low low for the year, and we have a major meteorite hit to the transom .. if it didn't have the hit it would be worth the $16ish range on the wholesale side, probably a little more because of the short miles, could easily see the $18/$19ish range on the retail side ... asking $15.? dealer might have the $13's in it - *depending on the finish work and the "title" (salvage, rebuilt.?) .............

We're planning to buy an '04 Camry LE. Will be trading in our 96 Camry DX, 4dr. sedan. Has A/C, Cruise, power locks and windows. Mileage 91,000, only minor body dings (what you would expect for the age) No mechanical problems at all.
Two tires are a month old, the other two about a year.

What kind of trade-in offer can we expect? We are in Western NY.

    Hello.

I am considering buying a used car shortly and was considering using my 1998 Dodge Intrepid with about 100K miles as a trade-in, but I am very skeptical as to what a dealer would give me. Can anyone provide a possible valuation of the car. I'm in NJ.
    thanks much in advance.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Terry will need more info on the car. Color, condition, options. DESCRIPTION!! Terry's crystal ball is in the shop this week, so help him out.

Any idea what a clean, red, Cabrio should bring on a trade in? The car has 99,000 miles, is in good shape mechanically and body/interior. Acessories include: leather, premium sound, and a/c, and alloys.

Dealer offered $2700 which is far to low! Edmunds states around $4100 trade in, $4900 private. I put it in a lot today marked at $4399.

    Any comments?

    Thanks,

    Stevo1

If you are skeptical, you can always sell it yourself. It's a 100,000 mile Intrepid. You probably won't like Terry's answer.

Not much of a market for these.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
Is the Cabrio an automatic or 5-speed manual?
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
The RX has a clean title. I checked it through carfax. Thankfully, it is already gone so my decision was made for me.

However ... I have found the two following cars that I might buy to save some of the miles on my 04 Accord or since we now have the 04 Odyssey I might sell the Accord and save some money.

    First is ..

    1997 Infiniti I30
    120,XXX
    Gold exterior/tan leather
leather, roof, climate, BOSE, heated seats, automatic, alloys
interior is in beautiful condition for the age of the car
exterior is in good shape .. maybe a few small scratches here and there.
The front end has paintwork, no frame damage, but the untrained eye would never notice

    Second is ...

    1995 Toyota Camry LE automatic
    113,000 miles
    Burgundy exterior/gray cloth interior
Standard LE options: cruise, power locks/windows/mirrors, AC
    Interior is very clean
Exterior has a few small scratches
    No known paintwork

    Both cars are in Atlanta.

Also, do you think an 04 Accord EX-L automatic with 17k (silver exterior/black leather) would be a fairly easy private party sale in the Atlanta area?

As always, thanks for your help.

What should I be asking for retail and take for a trade in. 02 pathfinder, se 4x4, sunroof, auto, bose, boards ect. silver on black, 27k miles? Thanks for your help.

=== Not much of description here .. color is right for anywhere, it's an SE with small miles, 4x4, slider, auto, Bozo sound and we have cleat cleaners ... depending on the area of the country and it's clean, no American fry invasions, no Taliban hit's, no repaints, no Jack the Ripper interior and deep sneakers ... then trade side, in and around the tall $16's low $17's ... down Retail Rd, $19,495 *asking* and cut that bad boy loose at the first $18,5/$18,9 - if needs stuff start deducting ..

Since all of this revolves around expectations, just assume the car is worth basically nothing and then whatever you get will be a pleasant surprise. Rather than getting upset when a dealer fails to give you the expected trade in value.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
any car over 100k (or even 90k, in most cases) should go down retail road - people don't get it at all...

I don't care what NADA, KBB, or Edmunds calculates your car's value at - if it is up there on miles, or is 6-8 years old, 99% of the time it will be wholesaled to a used car lot - you can't put a warranty (and wouldn't want to) on a 110k mile car! Because you can't finance or warranty a 100k mile car, you can't really sell it retail (unless it's a Honda or Toyota in perfect condition, then that's another story). In other words, "book" value means squat on a vehicle over 90k miles - throw that number out - you're way off.

Unless you just HAVE TO trade it, forget that route - get it detailed, make sure all the service is good, including tires, windshield, fluids, and take out an ad on line or in your local paper - you'll do much better than what you'll be offered as a wholesale trade figure.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
I didn't even ask about trade-in values for my '89 Volvo. I've got an ad in the paper and here at the buy-sell-trade newsgroup at work- and frankly, this is a car with a little bit more of a following than a 110k Intrepid. Detail it within an inch of its life, make sure the service is current and put it in your local paper of choice.

To add a couple of more points ...

What sells most cars over 100k (except for the luxury cars) is condition, condition and condition. If the car purrs like a kitten, has no leaks, and the interior is free of french fry and Starbucks crashes, generally you *MIGHT* be able to get $1000-2000 for the vehicle.

The problem is IMHO, that a lot of private sellers do not take the time to really detail a car with 100k miles. I have seen some of the FILTHIEST pig stys when I have gone to look at some 8 year-old cars with 120k miles. Used cars are a lot like restaurants. If you walk in and the dining room is filthy, you just have to wonder what the kitchen is going to look like.

Second - and this is the question that I ask a lot of my friends - is why are selling the car. Let's say you have a Taurus or an Intrepid with 100k miles. The car is worth about nothing. but in a lot of cases, the car runs fine and hasn't cost you an arm and a leg. You know that you have taken care of the car and you know that you won't get anything for it. Why not run the car until you have a major problem and tehn have it towed to the salvage yard. I have had too many friends who have dumped a car that was running fine just to pick up a new one with a lot of problems. I guess the devil that you know is better than the one you don't.

    Just my 0.02 worth.

I had a '94 Toyota Paseo with almost 225K. Obvisouly, no dealer in their right mind wanted it. So I sold it myself for $350 (asking $500). When I went to the notary for the transaction, they said I had to justify in writing why I was selling it below "retail" value. Well retail value was around $1200. Trade-in around $350, but couldn't get anyone dealer to even offer $200. They all said "keep it". So I sold it for trade-in value and be done with.

In year 2000, I put an ad in prominent newspaper in a nearby large city to sell a 1986 Honda Accord LXi with 247K Mi for $1200. The car was well maintained and never in an accident and no dents. Interior and exterior were in very good condition. To my surprise, I got three calls on the car and the first person that came over bought it for $1000.

  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
Yup. 71k, actually. Aside from my first car (the $50 '78 Cougar) this will be the first automatic that I've ever owned. The turbo compensates for that shortcoming quite nicely; though I'd prefer a 5 speed, the price can't be beat and I've already found a 5 speed Volvo in Iowa once; I'm not gonna search for THAT needle in a haystack again!

My daughter had one of those fisher price battery powered ride on Jeeps and after 6 years she finally gave me permission to sell it. Its weathered and ratty, but works fine. We paid around $200 for it new 6 years ago. I put an ad on our bank's trader site, less than 30 minutes later I get a call and the guy says he'll take it, doesn't care what it looks like, he wants it for his kid. Sold it for my asking price of $40.......figured that Jeep owed us nothing and another kid can have fun with it.

If only it was that easy to sell a real car....lol.

Thanks, akangl. Now watch and learn as I keep the vehicle for more than a year. It can be done. :-)
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Yup, I know it *can* be done. Hubby's had his Ram almost a year and I highly doubt it will be going anywhere anytime soon. When we were contemplating a tow vehicle for our vacation next summer, I told him to trade the Ram and get a new one optioned like he wanted. His answer: "Nope, the Explorer is going." Hello Terry:

Just wanted to let you know what I ultimately ended up getting for our 1999 Accord EX-V6. You were kind enough to respond and offered a trade-in value of tall $9s-low $10s. After pricing it here on Edmunds, KBB, NADA, etc. I came up with an average trade-in value of basically the same thing - $10,400 or so. Before taking it to the Lexus dealer for their appraisal I took it to a local Carmax for their offer. In fact, the general manager at my Lexus dealer suggested I do so to get an idea of it's value.

Well, I was stunned when Carmax came back with an offer of $12,000! I then called the Lexus dealer and told them if they could match it I would trade it in. They declined and told me the most they would offer was $10K. You can imagine my next step - the car was sold to Carmax yesterday for $12,000. I appreciate all you do for us on these boards. I suspect you spend a great deal of your time assisting us and wanted to say "Thanks!"

i often use carmax to put my own deals together. they often top other dealers' calls by at least $500, sometimes as much as $1k-$1.5k.

all they will do is find a store in the country that can bring $13.5k, and ship it there to clear $1k.

Wanted to get your thoughts on this
200SX SE, black on black, auto, 70K miles, interior in great shape, exterior paint in great shape, but a couple of door dings, and a 1 inch gash on the front bumper. Oh and the car is in Alabama. Should I just carmax it (100 miles away) or try to sell it privately? Thanks for your help

    Hi Terry,

You've been a great help to me on several occassions and I appreciate the service you provide on here.

    Okay, here goes:

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. V-8.Tourador Red, with Gray fenders. Sunroof. 53000 miles. New tires (less than 5000 miles on them). Gray cloth interior, no french fry or coke stains. No third row seat. No WalMart dings. There is a small amount of the gray paint peeling from overly agressive self service car washing on the left rear quarter panel. AM-FM- Single CD.

The miles are highways miles, as I cover a multiple state area. 4WD works great as I use it about once a month to visit remote oil and gas wells. I change the oil and rotate the tires every 5000 miles and use Mobil 1 Synthetic. It will need new brake pads within the next 10,000 miles. I could put them on if it will help the value of the trade/sale.

It also has a 100,000 mile Ford Extended Warranty that is transferable.

I need something bigger to haul around some equipment that we sell.

Your thoughts as to how much to get via trade in or selling it myself?

    Thanks,

    Mike
