    Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was directed here. Any information would be appreciated.

    I am looking at a 2004 Sienna LE 8 Passenger with option package #11 (dvd, stability, doors etc.) The full list price for a new vehicle is about $30,000. I have seen them going for $28k or even less. This one is used (by the dealer as a loaner/rental) and has 13,000 miles on it.

    None of the car pricing indexes have 04 Sienna prices yet for used vehicles. Anybody have any idea what a fair purchase price might be for this vehicle.

    My rule of thumb on a used vehical:

    take the cost of the car new (28000).

    Figure it will last 150000 miles, and determine a cost per mile:

    28000/150000=$0.1867/mile.

    Car has 13000 miles, or $0.1867 *13000 =2400 in depreciation.

    So, if it is more than 25600, it is should be bought new. Otherwise, consider used.

    if they are selling new for $28k, then a one year old with 13k on it shouldnt be more than about $25k...but that would be an asking price. my offer on a vehicle like that would be around $24k plus taxes.

                 In the land of the Buckeyes we have an 01 Impala "LS", no smoke, we have a good color, we have done the service, we have new stoppers, we even have new sneakers, hubby tried to duck when he should have weaved at the Home Depot = $200 .. we also have the leather, slider, wing, No star, tunes, bun warmers - yep, all the stuff with 61k ..... Impala LS's are still a popular vehicle, whats hurting this one is the miles - trade side, in and around the mid/tall $7's, If it's really nice you "might" get a dealer to drop the low/mid $8's ........... what are they offering.?

                     04 LE with 13k, we have the Disney package and the doors .. if it hasn't been cracked smacked or whacked, then the dealer might have paid the tall $20ish low $21ish range for it .. figure a little service (cpo.?) detail, pack, a little this and that and it probably hits the table at "around" the $22ish range, dealer has to make a little profit, so figure the $23,5/$24 range on the sale side ....... whats he asking .?

    Hello Terry,

    This is a repost from a few days ago.

    I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS that I am thinking of trading in relatively soon (could be tomorrow or three months from now), for another Subaru. Forgive me for going into too much detail.

    5 Speed Stick
    White Exterior & Black Cloth Interior
    Options If they matter include,
    Rear Spoiler
    Fog Lights
    Factory Upgraded Speakers & Tweeters
    Factory Sub & Amp
    Keyless Entry and Security Upgrade
    Located in NJ

    The interior of the car is clean (no smoking or pets) while the engine bay still looks brand new. The paint itself as a whole is all very good. Car drives great, as any Subaru should. Just put on fresh high-performance All Season tires (like 100 miles ago), no Pep-Boy Futura specials.

    Now the bad. The car has been in one slow (make that moderate) speed accident two years ago. Kissed a Jersey barrier going about 25 mph during a snow storm, hit in the driver's side front at about a 45 degree angle. The car looked fine except for the ground down bumper skin.

    Yet required $2000 to fix it, as it needed a new bumper skin, bumper beam, and headlight. Supposedly it needed a very short moment on the rack.

    #1 Clamp down points produced from a Rack/Frame Machine are persent on the underside of the car. From what I understood it needed a minimal amount on the rack to just check things out. I wasn't aware of any frame damage but those clamp down points are there none-the-less. When put on a lift the underside of the car looks identical to other 'perfect' Imprezas, ie it looks straight with no tell-take krinkle, stress marks, or questionable welds. Just those clamp down marks on the underbody rails.

    #2 The shop who fixed the front was lazy when it came to painting the bumper skin. They didn't use flex agent or even primer on the bumper skin so the paint is just starting to flake off in two tight corners on the bumper. Paint work itself looks good, decent quality but still easily spotted because of that flaking just starting.

    #3 The hood is krinkled from where something or someone fell onto it and stressed it. Not at all noticable but if you look (as they will), you can see three dents from where the hood was pushed in and then popped back up. Paint is fine. Only seen when throughly inspecting the car.

    #4 The final damage is the most difficult to explain. It involves the rear passenger door. The car has a dent that runs along the entire length of the door that is about 3" wide, like a very broad swipe mark, on the lower portion of the door. The paint still looks fine on it with no breaks in it, yet in reality the sheet metal is pushed in about 1/8"~1/4". Due to the stock curvature of the door and the broad swipe mark it would mostly require replacement of the door skin, or one good body guy using glass. Believe it or not, from a glance this damage is not evident.

    As a whole the car still looks sharp, its just these items. Again sorry for the long narrative, I know the wholesale value of the car is roughly $9k ~ $9.5k, from the infamous Galves. I can understand them taking off a big chunk for the comestic problems, yet I really want to prepare myself if they come back with a really really big chunk taken off.

    Situation:
    I have an '02 Miata that I am thinking of selling. I really love the car, but priorties are changing and I am wanting my transportatin costs as low as possible. The car only has 12,000 miles. I can sell it for $14,000.

    Question:
    I bough the car new, so I have already taken a considerable depreication hit. Would it be financially more sound to keep the car or sell and buy something for $3,000 or so?

    Any opinions/advice greatly appreciated.

    If it were me, and I was upside down, I would probably keep paying. Miatas are solid little cars, it should serve you well for many years to come. They also get real good gas mileage....no?

               Hmm, how do I explain this correctly .. the "Clamp down points produced from a Rack/Frame Machine are present" .. this is going to be your worst enemy, just because they are there, doesn't make for frame damage .. alot of body guys use them for the look/pick/insurance deal - some States, like Wisconsin, will even use the frame/body caps from the use of the tire jacks to be considered as frame damage and must be declared (which is crazy) but, it's their State .l.o.l..

                    I think whats also killing ya here is the bad combo of a hit and run repair guy, little attention to detail and more attention to being paid, between the rear door, the ground down bumper skin, it's kinda sounding like a Heinz 57, plus your staring down the barrel of a Galves book and we have the handshaker and the miles are a little on the stiff side .. depending on how it looks, feels and drives, it sounds like a $9,5/$10,0 vehicle trade side, but I can't see it, hold it a little closer to your computer ............. ;)

                 I hope this makes sense and let me know how it goes ....!

    ........ Good pics .. some are better than the others, pic #5 and #9 are the winners .. always "shoot" up, not down and low shots down the sides/front/rear work the best, the time of the day is right, late afternoon and/or early morning, high noon means high glare, even if there is no swirls in the paint, it will create them for you and makes it look like your 8 year old nephew used his crayons to detail it l.o.l. .. black the tires, even the treads so you don't get that Harpo Marx look ...................... :)

    Interior is clean. I wash, polish and wax regularly, and swirl marks are kept to a minimum.

    Rear right passenger door got scratched, but now it is in the shop for repairs. No collision, Replaced Tires at 30K, splash shield and front wheelwell iners at 46.9K, replaced coolant at about 46K.

    I guess I should jump on their offer of $8,250.00!! It's a Mazda dealership and we are even buying the proposed new Mazda 3-S 5-door at S-Plan pricing! You'd think they would have really lowballed us on the trade, but looks like they didn't. We already bought an MPV from this dealership and were treated royally. Looks like they appreciate our repeat business, and we were right in going back to them. Anyone in Cincinnati area shopping for a Mazda, I give "King's" two thumbs up!!

    But I must say, wow, did I read this correctly? You figure $9s for it?

    I've heard the doom an gloom and all that Jazz about trading in a car after an accident, or trading with some paint problems. And how all dealers in the NE quote Galves and nothing more.

    So I figure I was looking at a triple whammy of having, a $9,0 galves value, the dealer citing possible structual damage (if it exists or not), and my poor dented door.

    Being the pessimist I was expecting a $2-3 drop off of galves value to leave me land in the territory of $6s. So is Galves just really really low?

    I love the little Scooby, and I think the super clean engine and interior show that, all look almost mint. The exterior looks quite good too, besides the problems. Unfortunately (or Fortunately) I think this car will send out mixed signals.

    Just one bad luck event after another occurs with this car. I think either I or the little White Subie is cursed. That coupled with other factors has left me looking, for a untainted Subie, one of which I hope my current 2 year bad luck streak will also not inherit.

    Wow, so $9s huh? I feel a lot better now. I'm all ready to go visit my dealer now and hope they don't deflate my confidence too much.

                Thats the "possible whammy", if all the dealers say "structural damage" .... but let me know what happens, their paying the tall $10's low $11's at the Big daddy auction not too far from you ~ comparably equipped .. so it becomes: what they "think", not what they know ....

    Hey Terry - The '99 LS400 is on its way to TN even as we speak, and the $23,300 is in the bank waiting to buy a 2005 Acura TL. If the Lexus LS continues to get uglier, I'll probably be calling you around 2007 or 2008 for a value on a 2004 LS430. If they get better looking, I'll probably call you in 2010 for a value on a 2006. :-)

    aggie95: $19,800 might be a bit high for a manual EX-L Accord. You can get new ones for around the $20,500-$21,000 range.

    Terry, thanks for the affirmation. I will be picking the Civic up on Thursday hopefully. Will drive a beater-ish vehicle as a daily driver til the Ody goes back off lease then we will either buy a TSX or TL, both 6-speeds with NAV.

    I'm thinking we may have just discovered the secret to our driveway. We keep 1 REAL nice car that's leased and only use it for when we want to look pretty or on trips and we drive his 03 Si and some other small, economical car every day. Seems like a perfect balance. Then we can avoid having 20,000 miles in 10 months on a brand new car. As for his 94 LS400 .. he now claims that it is in "storage" until we get the TL.

    Thanks Terry. I always feel good after hearing from you following a car sale. This is four you've helped me with now over the past 3-4 years. Two Accords ('91, '93), the Explorer ('97) and now the Lexus ('99) I did get another fraudulent email. I'm getting good at spotting them. Guy wanted me to contact him with my lowest price ASAP if the car was still available. I told him I had a sale pending, but if it didn't work out, I would accept a cashiers check, in person, for the exact amount of the sale, and I'd provide a list of acceptable banks..... That was the last I heard from him. :-)

    Not sure you'll help me out, but here goes......

    Looked at trucks today and hubby has decided on a Duramax (I know I know, I said no more Chevys). Stopped by the Nissan dealer to check on the parts that were ordered for the Titan and the GSM said that he's willing to have his buyer pick up the truck we want at auction.

    So, my question is this.....what should a 2004 Silverado 3500 CC 4x4 dually Dmax/Allison LT/LS, tow pkg, say 5k-7k miles, and whatever other goodies these bad boys come with be going for on the block? What's a fair price for it? We aren't as bad off in the Dodge as I thought, so that's good.

    Also, should we just order new or go for the GSM's suggestion? He's really cool and wants us to stick with his dealership even if it means they have to go buy the truck we want from the auction.

    We forgot how nice a diesel was......20 mpg vs 10 mpg, what a concept. Let's see, our fuel bill will drop approx $200/mo. Not to mention we can keep some miles off the Titan.

    Its either that or pay off the Dodge and keep it, which means its out of its ESC very soon and we are into costly repairs. Argh, decisions decisions.

    1st of all, many thanks for the detailed comments. Both MB's appear to be virgin paint, clean title, just plain good deals. To help me with my decision, I'm trying to figure out what I might get for either car if I kept each car the same time period (say 3 1/2 years) and the cars were kept in the same condition. It's an analysis that I've never done before when comparing two cars.

    So, in Dec 07' I'd be faced with selling either:

    a) the 01' E320, CD/moon/htd seats, Smoked Silver/Beige with about 62,000 miles and 18 months left on a 100,000 mile warranty with Warranty Direct, OR

    b) the 00' S430, loaded with options inc. CD/nav/rear shade, Horizon Blue/Light Gray with 76,000 miles and 6 months left on a 100,000 mile bumper/bumper $0 deductible warranty with Warranty Direct.

    What are your best "guesses" as to what each one might be worth when it comes time to sell?

    Here are my guesses - the 01' E320 will be worth between $18-$20K (remember, longer warranty), and the 00' S430 maybe $20.5-$22.5K. I'm guessing the nav unit on the S430 will be rendered obsolete by the GPS implants the government will be requiring us to by then. How close are my "guesses" to your more educated guesses?

    If my numbers are reasonably close, taking into account the 100K/4-Yr warranty on the S430 costs $1k more than the 100K/5-Yr warranty on the E320, this is what it would look like financially:

    E320: Initial cost $27,000 plus $2,650 for warranty less $19,000 average resale = $10,650 cost of ownership, excluding maintenance, fuel, insurance
    S430: Initial cost $32,500 plus $3,600 for warranty less $21,500 average resale = $14,600 cost of ownership, excluding maintenance, fuel, insurance.

    Do these numbers look correct? More importantly, what are your thoughts (and the thoughts of others) as to whether it is worth the extra bucks to drive around in what is supposed to be a much nicer car.

    Rick -- you're as analytical as I (anal, too). Here's the threshold question you need to ask yourself -- is it worth $100 per month to keep your wife happy? If it is, then get what she wants, which I'd say is the S430.

    Divorces are WAY more expensive than $100 per month for 3 years. Terry could likely give you some actuals -- I hear all his ex's live in Texas.

    Get a mechanic named Dieter. $100 a month extra my foot, it's the repairs you worry about with these bad boys. The S is the executive express of Germany; you can put 150k of Autobahn driving on these, no problem. It's just that when something fails -- and something will -- it helps if someone with a lot of experience works on it. Where are you going to get that where you live? If the Benz dealership sees a lot of these, that'd help... a good independent is even better.
    It's like older Audis, they have a well-deserved nasty reputation in the US; in Germany, they are considered solid, reliable cars. Two factors: No Japanese competition in that end of the market, and Dieter.
    The big deal with the S is likely going to be electronic goo-gaws failing. Have fun.

It's just a silly car-guy joke, it's when you see someone who's detailed a vehicle and they forgot to spray inside the fender walls and they left the tires dirty and only blacked out the side surface, and the picture picks it up - and it gets that "Harpo Marx look" .. you see alot of it in ad's like ebay, local papers, stuff like .................. :)

             ** Hinky... you can say that again ** ..... these dudes also do the late night "infomercials" on cable - Put your hands on the TV and YOU will be saved ... and don't forget to send us that $39.95 (plus the app taxes, shipping, landscaper charge, the bug man, pool cleaner etc, etc)

    Dear Terry,

    (this is repost from a few days ago)

    Trying to figure out reasonable value on a straight sale of vehicle to dealer as I don't need it replaced. I've looked up KBB and Edmunds values but most of the local dealerships I've called don't want a car this old. Carmax in Orlando said bring it down for quote but won't ballpark over phone. I'm thinking the KBB/Edmunds will be higher than whats really offered based on past experience. Any suggestions as to what you think is fair would be really appreciated on straight trade and possible private party range for quick sale (seems hard to sell a car private party now when you can't offer the financing like a lot can) Thanks in advance.

    80k miles
    Florida car - no rust
    good condition inside and out - non-smoker
    automatic
    runs well with only very slight hesitation at low idle

    A low mileage Accord should be an easy sale. Someone wanting a commuter or parents picking up a car for their kid will love the low mileage and the EX part of it. Heck, if you lived closer I would consider buying it for my MIL, her 1993 Accord 10th AE has about 170,000 miles and my husband is beginning to get the urge to replace it with a lower mileage one. I would even buy it for myself were it a manual transmission.

    .......... Thanks for the repost, I get side-tracked all the time .. so between my ballet lessons and my AARP meetings, time flies .....

                     You show a 93 And a 92, so I will use the 93 .... it's a Florida vehicle, you say no rust and it's clean with 80k on an automatic EX ...... If, the paint isn't all faded out and the interior doesn't have that I spilled Clorox all over the place look, the dash hasn't cracked, Cold breeze, no K-Mart collisions, rubber is deep and service is 110% .. then most dealers will be lookin' at in and around the $1,0/$1,5ish area, "maybe" towards $2,0 if it's been garaged, not all burnt out, a "baby doll" and it shows and drives like a 99, if your lucky ...

                     Even though it has low low miles and you say it's clean, most dealers won't have a home for it, it's either going to FAAO or the BHPH lot down the street .. me personally, I would send this dude down Retail Rd, great detail and a super Ad in the Orlando paper - $4,900 *asking* and it gets a new driveway for $3,5/$4,5, big market there, you have UCF, the employee's of Universal, Disney, Swamps R' US, Wet and Furry, Gators R U', etc, etc ..........

    Thanks Terry. How would I do on a private party sale? Would the price difference more than offset the tax benefit of trading it in? I'm in NJ and the tax rate is 6%...so at $25k, the tax benefit of trading it in is $1.5k.
