Thanks to all of you for responding quickly. That is about what I was considering, but they are asking 28k (the cost of a new one) and have come down to 27k without me saying a word. I think I will offer 23.5 to 24 and see what they say (I can go up a little from there if necessary). If they are not interested then I can always get a new one after all the price will only go down when the new Odyssey comes out.
We can't get another ESC on the Dodge, its a 99 and right now is covered by a Ford ESC. We can get it fixed (have to in order to sell it), but when the ESC is up we are without any warranty on the truck.
As for payment, nah, won't be much if any higher, interest rate will go down. Dropped 3 pts on by trading to the Titan, should drop about 5-6 pts by trading the Dodge (we are at 14%).
See, the Dodge was a stepping stone, we never intended to keep it. Its a good truck in its own way, but we knew we would get rid of it by the time the ESC was up. While I would have like that to have been a bit more time, its not. We've had the truck nearly a year, its improved our credit enough to where we can buy what we want. It truely owes us nothing, its hauled enough firewood to pay its depreciation.
spatulaman: It has been my experience when placing a vehicle ad that it takes between 1-2 weeks to get any serious callers. However, all cars that I have attempted to sell private owner have sold in 1 month or less.
Not sure if this is doable in your neck of the woods. But maybe you can check with the Army base in your area to see if they have surplus unarmored Humvees for auction. Then find out what type of requirement it will need from the state to make it street legal. From reading all your car/truck problems these past few years. I honestly think you and your family need something that's military graded in terms of durability, hence my suggestion of a Unimog. 8)
Na, no attitude, just frustrated. We knew the truck wouldn't work for long when we bought it, but we NEEDED a truck and at the time it was what we could get with $0 down. I feel like we have been stepping on these vehicles backs climbing back up to good credit, seems sad in a way. Left a wake of vehicles in our path.
Dang it all, the thing will be PAID FOR by spring, that means I can get the Titan paid off shortly there after (nothing like paying $2k/mo on a truck and watching the balance drop).
Problem is when we need to do something with the truck (haul firewood or whatever) we have to take 2 trucks since its a reg cab and me, hubby, and 2 kids don't fit. That's a PITA and costs twice as much.

Turns out their Sport Trac had a damaged Tonneau (underside cracked) that they weren't going to replace (cost). Otherwise, it was in very good condition, rode solid. Detailed my Ody to the max (hobby I'm actually quite good at) before arrival, it looked cleaner then THEIR vehicle. Anyway, when asked for Ody history I told them about the skin work. I even gave them a choice of wheels. They checked it out and they said only thing they could see was passenger slider had been painted. Everything else looked great.
Started discussion with my Ody as a trade. They stated it would go to auction since they don't deal anything without a squeaky clean carfax. They proceeded to quote auction numbers for a bunch of Ody's with similar mileage (40-50K) at about $12-$13K. I asked for source, they said Manhiem. I told them I expected around $15K (lower end of your guess-timate) and they said over priced. Did things change that much in a month???
I'm thinking this deal is DOA. But, I decided to stab at the Sport Trac anyway to see what they might do at that end. I didn't mention that I saw the owner drop the price (sticker was still $20.5K) a month ago to $18.5K on their weekly TV car show. I offered 18K, they came back with best they could do is $19.4K, from the owner no less. <bugler starts playing taps> I didn't even bother to dope slap him with his quoted TV offer. A smile and a thank you for your time and I'm out the door. Oh well. Best thing is that I could walk without so much as a twitch of remorse armed with the info you gave me.
Jolie, I can't comment as to what the Duramax should go for at auction, but it sounds like you're looking for advice (or, at least validation of the idea you've got). That I can give you.
You need a truck that handle being beat on--not "beat on" on purpose, but can handle doing all sorts of rough and tumble stuff in a truly inhospitable environment. In addition to that, it needs to be big enough to haul 4 people, dogs, equipment, etc.
It also sounds like it needs to be strong enough to tow just about any monstrosity you throw back there. (Firewood trailers and all that). I think that boils it down to: a 3500, CC, diesel.
Ok, so...Whew! I'm a Dodge guy, myself. I've never really driven any of the Big 3's diesels--never had a reason to. That said, I think they're all more or less reliable. If this is going to be the hubby's truck and HE wants the Duramax, I say go for it. The fact that your dealer is willing to secure the vehicle via auction is even better. Slap a good ESC on that and go nuts.
I, personally, would NOT, under any circumstances, keep the Dodge (as much as I am a Dodge guy) after the ESC expires. Not because I think it's junk, but because of the way it's used and where it's used, something's bound to just say "screw it, I can't take it anymore" and give up. ;-)
Lastly, you're on the right track on this idea across the board, anyway. 1) You get a more fuel efficient vehicle--$200 is $200. 2) You've improved your credit to the point of getting a lower rate. Sure, the Dodge may be paid off and have a payment of $0, but it also has no reassurance it won't cost that much to maintain. At least by taking on another payment, it won't be so financially painful. 3) You regain the peace of mind of having a likely more reliable vehicle and one you won't have to grumble about. That's worth something, in my book.
Now, maybe with a couple pretty pleases and 3 "I promise to SAFTCLs (Stay away from the car lots) for 1 year", Terry could tell you what a low mileage, 1 year old 3500/Crew Cab/diesel will go for at auction. Maybe. I think he just doesn't want to be an enabler. j/k ;-0

The color is good, the miles are low, we have the bun warmers and you say it's clean ~ clean meaning: it has all the service from yesterday, deep sneakers, no soccer team interior, no repaints and it looks and drives like an 02 ... trade side, in and around the low to mid $9's .. depending on where you live these do pretty well down Retail Rd, so it's your choice ........................ ;-)
I have a 1999 Windstar in fair condition. A minor trim piece is missing, there are several minor scratches and dings in the BLACK paint, and the driver's power window is not working.
BEFORE I take the car to a dealer for a trade-in value estimate, how much effort should I make to correct these items?
I plan to replace the trim piece, (hopefully) buff the scratches out, and (self) repair the power window. Should I pay to have the dings (from shopping carts, car doors) repaired? What if I have to pay to fix the power window?
In general, how much does a dealer de-value the trade based on these types of problems? Or will my money & effort be well spent?
Finally, does having a car professionally detailed make any difference in getting better trade-in value. To a private party, impressions might mean a lot; but to a dealer, I'm guessing they don't care. What do you think?
Thank you!! You summed up exactly what I'm thinking. See, what some don't understand is we USE our trucks (even the Titan), we make money with them, its part of our livelyhood. If you start having problems, it costs you money in repairs, but it also costs you money in down time. (and yes you can have downtime even with a new truck, I realize that)
The Dodge is a fairly good truck, I can't really dog it, but its got a light rearend and the V10 isn't too happy about what's being asked of it........not to mention the tranmission is saying it gives up.
Ok, time to call the Nissan GSM to see if he found a truck yet and how much THAT is gonna cost. May just end up ordering a new one if the price is to outta line.

If its sooooo important to have no downtime, then why don't you keep the Dodge as a backup, and get something else as a primary. The repair costs on the Dodge should decline dramatically since it won't be used as much, and you'd always have something to drive....unless of course the cost of your downtime doesn't justify that much expense.

I'll step in here - these folks aren't millionaires, but they work hard and make pretty good money - not good enough, I wouldn't think, to keep a truck with a very large loan payment as a "backup".....
Heck, if money's no object, they could buy a new Crew Cab Dually for each day of the week....heck, one for each day of the month...
Well, the Dodge will be paid off in the spring if we keep it until then, but we will sell it and take that $10k/$12k and use it as down payment on the new truck.
We ain't millionaires, but we do ok and we work hard for what we have.
We generally haul about 100 cords of firewood per year, that's all cut by hand, split with a small hydralic spitter, and stacked by hand. We also load and deliver it when an order comes in. That's our play money, its hard earned money, but we enjoy the benefits.
my suggestion would be to find someone that can sponsor you for the ford x-plan (below invoice), and get a remaining 2004. price-wise, there is no better bang for the buck if you are looking at a diesel truck...check it out.
There's a nice F350 that was calling our name yesterday, tell you what, I was ready to say OK, we'll take it. Hubby likes the Chevy better, but if the deal was right........
i would wait for a 2004 to show up, or get a new one. the 6.0 turbodiesel is a FAR better motor than the 7.3. quieter, more powerful, and better on fuel.

Ok. According to Edmunds, a 3500 CC/Duramax MSRP at $44530 (Chevy's site is slightly less and part of the problem is Edmunds charges for the locking rear diff, whereas Chevy's site does not, because it's supposed to be included in the package that, among other things, gets you the Duramax and Allison transmission). TMV, adjusted for a Anchorage zip code (or is Fairbanks closer? I forget), is $41084 and it appears right now, there is a $4000 rebate. So net TMV is 37084. I built it as an LS, with bench front seat and very few additionals beyond what's included in LS. It does include trailering/5th wheel hook ups, winter covers, engine heater, etc.
So personally, I wouldn't pay more than low 30's for an identical auction purchased truck. And that would be ALL the money. Then again, it's AK, so I really don't know if that's right or not.

I believe she mentioned previously (farther back than just the post above yours) that the Dodge was going to be paid off soon, which is what I think spatulaman was picking up on. Although I'm not so sure it's the best thing in the world, the suggestion of keeping the Dodge wasn't entirely without merit and it certainly wasn't a suggestion to have 3 payments long-term.
I think the only thing hurting this idea is there would be no downpayment on the new, more reliable vehicle.

$10k OTD is a good job by you AND the dealer. you may have left a few hunskys there, but not many. a 15k miler still under warranty for a nice round figure like that is a great deal.

Jolie, i'm sorry but you justify your automobile spending habits better than anyone i know. If i do a search on your posts, I can guarantee you I will come up with numerous posts with the last 2 WEEKS that said are not trading any trucks for YEARS.... YEARS... YEARS....both trucks are perfect, will last forever, etc... you add some color here, but you don't have to justify any car purchase to us, you buy cars b/c you like to buy cars every 6 months, period. I wish you the best of luck with whatever your strategy is with car.... trading cars when flipped $5/6k???? nothing holds you back!

Titan's gone by Thanksgiving; the new Truck X I'll give until mid-February when the tank is all nice and gelled up. I think I was generous, too. I had 15 October, IIRC, on the Exploder.
Diesel don't gel up here, that's what winter fuel and additives are for, never had a problem before.
I won't say if we do or don't buy the new truck, its still in discussion. I'll just leave you all guessing about what we are driving. Might be a Focus by next week.
My mechanic's name is actually Hass, not Dieter. He drives a big old SE 500 or some other ugly but impressive bad boy Benz with a boat horn attached to the hood of his car. He works on Benz's and Jag's and anything else British or European that is difficult. I trust him more than my partner (at least, one of them). More importantly, Warranty Direct will be my new friend so I'm not concerned about the electric do-dads that will break. However, thanks for the heads up. Terry, if you're out there I'm still interested in what you think about the resale values of the two vehicles..

In the land of the Hurricanes we have a 00 Z3 with the 2.3, handshaker and 28,000 short miles, 1 minor kiss(?), color is good, we have some tunes with the prem pack and most of the round things are still there .... depending on the accident (if it's just a $200 nip and tuck and a $300 repaint) - then the dealer probably paid the high $15's low $16's, did some service, a little detail and a this and he might have the the tall $16's in it .. 2.3's aren't the most wanted, so the tall $19's would just about do it, it will all depend on the "small" accident ..... whats he asking.?

If you have a factory *warranty* on the "S" and you like it and it keeps peace in the homeland, then thats the way to go for the extra $100 bucks a month .. keep in mind, I said warranty, because the they ain't cheap to fix, if the the wiper motor linkage decides to cough up a lung, it can cost $900+ and thats not counting the motor and the labor from Field Marshal Rommel, so there's $1,200 just so you can see out the windshield if it rains .l.o.l... so if your covered up to 100k, then all is well .... the guy that gets Clocked most, is always the guy that thinks he can get one fixed for $28 at "Uncle Burt's Bait Tackle Antique's and Foreign car Emporium" ...

What year/model is the Ody.? (01.?) .. it's hard to say what they thought .. depending on the dealer, they will "assume" it's a loser, in their minds they think they don't have a retail piece and it has to go off to the auction, that entails transport, auction fee, detail, rep time, time and money, rep time, so they hit it low "depending on the year" .....
.............. "clean" 02 SE's with miles in the high 20's, low 30's are doing around the tall $13's .. so figure you should be able to drive one home for "around" the mid $16ish figure with the "Certa Fly" stuff .........

The color is good, the miles are low, we have the bun warmers and you say it's clean ~ clean meaning: it has all the service from yesterday, deep sneakers, no soccer team interior, no repaints and it looks and drives like an 02 ... trade side, in and around the low to mid $9's .. depending on where you live these do pretty well down Retail Rd, so it's your choice ........................ ;-)

BEFORE I take the car to a dealer for a trade-in value estimate, how much effort should I make to correct these items?
I plan to replace the trim piece, (hopefully) buff the scratches out, and (self) repair the power window. Should I pay to have the dings (from shopping carts, car doors) repaired? What if I have to pay to fix the power window?
In general, how much does a dealer de-value the trade based on these types of problems? Or will my money & effort be well spent?
Finally, does having a car professionally detailed make any difference in getting better trade-in value. To a private party, impressions might mean a lot; but to a dealer, I'm guessing they don't care. What do you think?
The Dodge is a fairly good truck, I can't really dog it, but its got a light rearend and the V10 isn't too happy about what's being asked of it........not to mention the tranmission is saying it gives up.
Ok, time to call the Nissan GSM to see if he found a truck yet and how much THAT is gonna cost. May just end up ordering a new one if the price is to outta line.
If its sooooo important to have no downtime, then why don't you keep the Dodge as a backup, and get something else as a primary. The repair costs on the Dodge should decline dramatically since it won't be used as much, and you'd always have something to drive....unless of course the cost of your downtime doesn't justify that much expense.
I'll step in here - these folks aren't millionaires, but they work hard and make pretty good money - not good enough, I wouldn't think, to keep a truck with a very large loan payment as a "backup".....
Heck, if money's no object, they could buy a new Crew Cab Dually for each day of the week....heck, one for each day of the month...
We ain't millionaires, but we do ok and we work hard for what we have.
We generally haul about 100 cords of firewood per year, that's all cut by hand, split with a small hydralic spitter, and stacked by hand. We also load and deliver it when an order comes in. That's our play money, its hard earned money, but we enjoy the benefits.

Ok. According to Edmunds, a 3500 CC/Duramax MSRP at $44530 (Chevy's site is slightly less and part of the problem is Edmunds charges for the locking rear diff, whereas Chevy's site does not, because it's supposed to be included in the package that, among other things, gets you the Duramax and Allison transmission). TMV, adjusted for a Anchorage zip code (or is Fairbanks closer? I forget), is $41084 and it appears right now, there is a $4000 rebate. So net TMV is 37084. I built it as an LS, with bench front seat and very few additionals beyond what's included in LS. It does include trailering/5th wheel hook ups, winter covers, engine heater, etc.
So personally, I wouldn't pay more than low 30's for an identical auction purchased truck. And that would be ALL the money. Then again, it's AK, so I really don't know if that's right or not.

It wasn't all that ridiculous if you read want she wrote. I believe she mentioned previously (farther back than just the post above yours) that the Dodge was going to be paid off soon, which is what I think spatulaman was picking up on. Although I'm not so sure it's the best thing in the world, the suggestion of keeping the Dodge wasn't entirely without merit and it certainly wasn't a suggestion to have 3 payments long-term.
I think the only thing hurting this idea is there would be no downpayment on the new, more reliable vehicle.

Jolie, i'm sorry but you justify your automobile spending habits better than anyone i know. If i do a search on your posts, I can guarantee you I will come up with numerous posts with the last 2 WEEKS that said are not trading any trucks for YEARS.... YEARS... YEARS....both trucks are perfect, will last forever, etc... you add some color here, but you don't have to justify any car purchase to us, you buy cars b/c you like to buy cars every 6 months, period. I wish you the best of luck with whatever your strategy is with car.... trading cars when flipped $5/6k???? nothing holds you back!

My mechanic's name is actually Hass, not Dieter. He drives a big old SE 500 or some other ugly but impressive bad boy Benz with a boat horn attached to the hood of his car. He works on Benz's and Jag's and anything else British or European that is difficult. I trust him more than my partner (at least, one of them). More importantly, Warranty Direct will be my new friend so I'm not concerned about the electric do-dads that will break. However, thanks for the heads up. Terry, if you're out there I'm still interested in what you think about the resale values of the two vehicles..

In the land of the Hurricanes we have a 00 Z3 with the 2.3, handshaker and 28,000 short miles, 1 minor kiss(?), color is good, we have some tunes with the prem pack and most of the round things are still there .... depending on the accident (if it's just a $200 nip and tuck and a $300 repaint) - then the dealer probably paid the high $15's low $16's, did some service, a little detail and a this and he might have the the tall $16's in it .. 2.3's aren't the most wanted, so the tall $19's would just about do it, it will all depend on the "small" accident ..... whats he asking.?

If you have a factory *warranty* on the "S" and you like it and it keeps peace in the homeland, then thats the way to go for the extra $100 bucks a month .. keep in mind, I said warranty, because the they ain't cheap to fix, if the the wiper motor linkage decides to cough up a lung, it can cost $900+ and thats not counting the motor and the labor from Field Marshal Rommel, so there's $1,200 just so you can see out the windshield if it rains .l.o.l... so if your covered up to 100k, then all is well .... the guy that gets Clocked most, is always the guy that thinks he can get one fixed for $28 at "Uncle Burt's Bait Tackle Antique's and Foreign car Emporium" ...
I can't say what the resale values will be in 2/3 years and I don't like to guess, but your figures could be right, the most important thing is: "Always buy and drive what *YOU* like" - not your neighbor, not the guy at the marina or the 7-11 and certainly not the guy that has the office 2 doors down ~ their opinion only counts when they're making the payments ..........................
