I need help on my trade-in value. I have a 2002 Lexus ES 300 with 32k miles. This car is certified (I bought it with 700 miles on it)and in excellent shape. The car has leather, leather and woodgrain steering wheel, 6-disc CD changer. My local Lexus dealership is willing to give $25k for the trade, but the BMW dealership only wants to give $23k. I am trying to buy a 2004 BMW 530i. Any advice?

........ $25,0 is ALL the peso's and $23,0 is on the low side for a (if it's a nice one) 32k 02 ES300 ... hmm, personally I would think the Bimmer dealer would be more aggressive, it ain't like they have herds of folks breaking the doors down on the "new style" 530 ..... keep shoppin' ..

thanks for the info about the SAAB.

What I really like is the 9-3 h as depreciated much more than my Camry....I can convert my Camry + ~ 2K into a 9-3.

    Cool!

    for you, terry...

1993 porsche 928 GTS, 41k miles, red in color, black on the inside. 5-speed manual.

outside is spotless, had a car cover on it almost every day of its life. driven 20-30 times a year, all in good weather.

inside has very few flaws. only a couple wrinkles in the driver seat leather, and a small crack in the dash plastic around the climate control. very minor.

a friend is trading it, and noone here has the guts to make a call on it...lol. can you help?

    cediadude,

You're doing all this complex analysis on the potential resale values of the 2 Mercedes, but I haven't seen you make one comment about all of the advice you're getting about how expensive these puppies are to repair. (Not just the S-Class, almost ANY Mercedes, but I think the newer ones with all the fancy electronics are even worse).

"Warranty Direct" is NOT the same thing as a factory warranty or Star Mark. $3600 for a Warranty? That's almost my property tax for a year. I guess you guys really can't live w/o this car.

I had an older BMW that after 12 years needed about $2500 in work. Nothing broke, just normal replacement of a lot of suspension parts, brakes, etc. I was complaining about it to a friend who had a couple of 10-15 year old Mercedes and she said: "$2500?? That's nothing! A TUNE-UP on a Mercedes costs $2500!"

    Good luck!

    Terry -

Looking for trade-in information on this car.

    2002 Lexus SC430
    25,000 miles
    Black exterior, ivory interior.
Mark Levinson, spoiler, run-flats, GPS options.
Lower driver door has a scratch mark, about 18 inches long.
Run flats were replaced at 19,000 miles (for $2k!), so have over 2/3 of tread life left.

Serviced mostly at Lexus - last oil change done at a local independent ($80, not $250 for 25k service interval).

    Located in St. Pete, FL.

    Thanks Much - Damon

...... Don't tell me, I'll guess .. their trading this in for a base Focus, right.? .l.o.l...

You need to be around that puppy with an Elco, some steady hands and some real good light ... For the real deal $$, they hafta be puuuurfect, arctic air, no click click in the shift, no Sherwin Williams, no resewn interiors, no Wal-Mart exhaust, no I scrapped the side 5 years ago and it's only a touch-up, no hinky Midas brakes, no JC Penny rubber, all of the records from the dealer, no mysterys on the lift, all of the -who-what and where of it, and - it "stands tall", the folks that buy these bad boys, Know em' ...

IF it's ALL there, then your lookin' at the high $18's low/mid $19's (depending on what it "may" "could" need, if it needs stuff, just multiply by 5) .. these are like the Bimmer 850's, if their nice, they do mindless money on the Retail side .. figure at $19 and you have $1,500 of "just in case" money ... $26,900 *asking* and I bet some guy from Boston, Atlanta or San Diego would be there in a heartbeat and "try" to beat your brains in, just to get to the $25/$26 figure, but they would take it home anyway .l.o.l. ....... whats your used car guy say.?

    Hi Terry -

    Here is another for you.

    2003 Saturn Ion Sedan 3.
    25000 miles.
Black exterior, grey leather interior (custom, not factory installed).
Auto, sunroof, upgraded stereo and CD player.

Car is in clean condition. Only thing is that the engine head was replaced under warranty at around 9,000 miles.

    Located in Tampa, FL.

    Thanks (Again!) - Damon

he is scared of being too close to $20k, but anything less will make this deal tough.

the car was serviced at bluegrass porsche here in town, and all the records are with it. brakes, tires, and all other maintenance have all been done there, and by the same tech./writer combo.

he's got the money, and doesnt NEED $20k, but thats the goal. as a matter of fact, its front-line ready as it sits, but he still has the fear of the $20k figure. he wants to hit it at $18k-$18.5k.

    Hi,

I am trying to get an idea what my 99 Mitsu Eclipse might be worth

1999 Mitsu Eclips GS - Silver
Manual, Air, Cruise, Power Locks/Windows, CD
    140,000 miles

Car is clean and the popular websites average around 6K for retail and 4K for trade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Terry,

Appreciate the insight on the high mileage 300M a week back or so. In my original post, I had my trade in info, but since I reposted the 300M request, I forgot to ask on the trade again and it looks like my post on that was lost in the shuffle.

    Anyway, here's what I've got:

    NE WI
    2001 Pontiac Sunfire SE 2dr
    37000 mi
    Silver
    roof
    traction
    ABS
    tilt
    CD
A/C (I guess not every Sunfire's got it?)
smaller of the 2 available engines (guess GT comes with 2.4?)

What are we looking at for trade in?

(Please let me know if I am not including the correct infomation to get the values.)

I am wondering about the trade in/retail pricing for the following:

    2003 VW Passat GLX 4Motion
    Stonehenge Gray Metallic
    25000 miles
    Automatic
    2.8 V6
    Climate Control
    Leather
    Original Tires
    The car is in Minnesota
Good inside and outside, no dings or dents

Picked up the 97 Civic LX today for $3500 and sold my EX-L to them for $17,500.

However, my husband is now thinking of parting ways with his car so we can get to our Acura TL 6-speed with NAV a little quicker. What do you think about this ....

    2003 Honda Civic Si hatchback
Vivid Blue Pearl exterior/black cloth interior
    16,800 miles
Manual transmission (as all Si's are)
Roof, alloys, cd, power everything, cloth, cold AC, factory fog lights.
Exterior is in beautiful condition with the exception of a 6" scratch on the hood caused by flying debris from a wayward Malibu. Otherwise no dong, scratches, or other parking lot kisses.
Interior is spotless. Never smoked in with no stains, spots, etc. Still smells new.
We have aftermarket wheels so the OEM tires only have about 8,000 miles on them.

So what do you think this will bring in Atlanta?
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Ha, you beat me to it! We are keeping the Ram for a while longer, amazing what a bad catalytic converter can do to a deal.....read....tanks it pretty fast. Gonna fix the truck and keep driving it.

    Good luck with the Civic.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
We ordered some new tires for the Civic but otherwise it seems great. Cold AC, smooth engine. I just hope it lives up to my MPG expectations.

So the catalytic converter went bad in addition to the tranny on the Dodge? Man, either you guys have baaad luck or Alaska is rough on a set of wheels. Good luck with whichever direction you go though. Maybe the Dodge will have sympathy and be problem-free for a while.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Actually we think what we thought was the tranny going south is actually the truck choking to death. The dealer thinks the same, said all the symptoms are classic of a plugging up cat. Getting it fixed on Monday, so we'll see if its better.

Stupid thing is the rattle was there when we bought it and we didn't put 2 and 2 together, so didn't get it fixed before the 5 year/50k emissions warranty was up.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
A '99 with 140K, manual tranny, Eclipse: $4K is closer to a retail number rather than trade side.

Face it, no bank will loan on it with the miles, the only dealers willing to touch are the BHPH and the corner lot.

The only saving grace will be if you live in S. California or other area where people want the car for $4K or so to trick it out, which will make it a faster sale. In the end they still have a car worth $4K, after putting another $4K in aftermarket crap on it.
  • cediadudecediadude Member Posts: 13
Alas, I must agree with you regarding the repair costs. However, it is out of my hands. My wife had a Mercedes SLK when I met her. I "made" her get rid of it since it was completely impractical, and bought her a 98' Jag VDP w/ 50K miles on it. Beauuuutiful car, NO problems, smooth as velvet ride. I LOVE it. She however hates it, and 16K miles later wants her Mercedes "back", so I decided it is no longer worth the aggrevation and knuckled under about the Benz. Luckily, I have a really good mechanic I trust 100%, and while I agree that WD is not the same as StarMark, it is a lot better than nothing. $3600 for 4 years, 52K miles coverage IS a lot of money, but so is (as you point out) getting these babies repaired.
Thanks for thinking about my plight! :)

*** What year/model is the Ody.? (01.?) .. it's hard to say what they thought .. depending on the dealer, they will "assume" it's a loser, in their minds they think they don't have a retail piece and it has to go off to the auction, that entails transport, auction fee, detail, rep time, time and money, rep time, so they hit it low "depending on the year" ***

Oh, it was doomed for the auction block by them. One of their mantras is a clean Carfax. So, showing a hit of any kind means sayonara.

Anyway, here is my original blurb on the Ody...

"Trade/retail for a 2000 Honda Odyssey EX (so all bells and whistles), 39K miles, dark grn, after market tan leather, good exterior w/minor touched up scratches mainly on the bumpers, 2 sets of new rubber (winter set on factory alloys, touring set on new after market wheels), interior hovered in (really), no nav. I'm second owner, first had a minor parking lot encounter with a post that required some skin work on passenger side, fixed by Honda with no telltale signs that I could ever notice."

    This was your original assessment:

"...trade side in and around the low to mid $15's, might "maybe" get a dealer to waddle up to the $16 figure, but don't hold your breath ... down Retail Rd, $18,490 *asking* and consider it gone at $17/$18"...

I guess the thing that got me, was the numbers they were pulling from their Manhiem report showing very similar Ody's doing only $12-12.5K. Is that correct or are they trying to pull a rabbit out of their... umm... hat???

So, now I'm on the fence. If I off load the Ody, it will probably have to be down retail road. Otherwise, I just may end up keeping it long term and continue on with a whole bunch more customizations that will ultimately transform it into an Odysassey... ;-)

........ Thanks for the Info.! .........

00 EX with 39k in polo green a/m leather and we have a meteorite hit to the door, but fixed correctly ... sounds like they were right on the $$, or at least close - 00 Ody EX's have been on the decline since about the first of June, "about" $1,000+ .. (I'm not there to see it) but I can see what they are saying, $12 is way on the low side and $13 "sounds" about right on the "safe" side, unfortunately vehicles depreciate and there is times when there is no when/where or how ...

Me personally, down Retail Rd it would go .. all the records, do the nice Ad and detail thing, and $15,990 *asking* and ~ "Wham Bam, thank you Ma'am.!" at $14,9/$15,5 ...

let me know how things go ..!

Cediadude, I have 4 friends who drive S500 sedans and 1 with an S430. They are finicky in several areas. The nav systems are hit and miss; sometimes they work and sometimes they get stuck. One friend who has a 2000 model, has had 3 or 4 radio units put in. Another friend with a 2001 had to have the instrument panel replaced (went totally dead), also, the whole wiring harness had to be replaced (took 3 visits at 3 week intervals each to finally get it right). The "S" class are pretty cars but I wouldn't have one, too glitchy.

My 2000 E430 sport and my 2002 ML500 have been great cars. The air conditioners on both are like being in a refrigerator. The "S" classes have very average air conditioners... they don't blow hard enough. The only problem with my E is that the vanity mirror flaps are too flimzy....both have been replaced and now another one has broken (out of warranty, $225). The ML has had a few issues mainly with a few interior trim pieces and a dash board rattle that finally got fixed (took 3 visits).

So, if your wife wants to stay out of the repair shop (no matter how good your mechanic is) go with the "E". Maybe the newer 2006 S-class will have the problems worked out but I doubt it.

......... IF IF and IF .. If I was he (and I'm not) I would roll the 928 over to the Porsche store and spend the $75/$150ish bucks and have the Porsche techs give me the final blessing on it and If all is well, I would drop the mid $19's in it instead of losing the business with your customer, plus the store gains the sale of the Fat Daddy ...

What's the worse thing that can happen .? .. it will do $25,0 on a bad day, cuz' you can't get em' and you can't find em' .... it's always better to ask for Forgiveness than to ask for permission ......... besides, the Lord hates a coward ............ ;-)

Ad in the WSJ and it still did $35,0 - sold in 2 days and I had calls from Vancouver to Miami for 3wks ...

I am all over the place here on Edmunds!

    Summary:
Pacifica is for my wife. Looking to do a deal now through 2 months from now.

The SC430 is for a friend. He loves the car, but doesn't love the upkeep.

The Ion is for another friend. He hates the car with a passion. Paid $20k in December of 2002, and can't wait to get rid of it.

We gots some major miles going on here, it's a GS, meat clever, power pack, silver color and a 140,000 blue suede shoe miles .. if it hasn't been used as a mortar target, no lengthy visits to Maaco, no Bonnie & Clyde interior, deep in rubber, service is 110% and it looks and feels like 50k .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $2's, maybe the low $3's if you been going to see your parole officer on time ...

I dunno if I would go down Retail Rd with this dude cuz' of the miles, but IF it's a stand tall driver, you might see $3,5/$4,500 and/or less - it's a coupe', it's a meat clever and we got some severe miles .. sounds like a bad night in Baghdad ................... :)

............ In the land of the cheese and if I read it right, the new home for that weak-kneed quarterback Tim Couch ...... good luck.!

We have 01 Sunfire SE coupe with 37k short miles .. slider, abs, cold breeze and it's an *auto.? .. ya know the drill, it's nice, deep round things, no Sherwin Williams yatti yatti yatti .. trade side, in and around the mid to tall $4's, might "maybe" find a dealer that will slide it past the $5,0 figure if it's really a nice one, if not start deducting ........

Yeah I thought the web numbers were kinda high... nada, kbb, and this site all had it that high. Makes me wonder... I think they cap what they deduct for mileage... maybe that's the reason

Here's more info... maybe you can give me some advice...

99, Eclipse GS, Silver, Man, A/C, Power Dr/Wind, Cruise, CD, Sunroof, Spoiler

and yes the unfortunate 140K miles. Literally almost all highway... I'm sure everyone says that, but I used to drive 75 miles to work each way... so for whatever that is worth

It looks great when washed and waxed. Interior is nice too. Looks and feels maybe like 75K maybe not quite 50K.

The motor runs like a champ, not a funny noise to be heard. Only thing that's ever happened to it is the water pump. So it's got a 3 month old pump, radiator, head gasket, hoses, and timing belt. Guy said it would go another 80K... for whatever that is worth

Anyway.... I am debating on a new car now or 1 year from now... I would be really happy with 3.5 -> 4K from this car if I can get it. I have the luxury of getting a new car and letting this one sit until it sells... I don't think a dealer will go over 2K for it...

So do I just eat it or try to sell it, cause in a year from now I won't be able to give it away.... Thanks for the advice...

    Cleveland by the way....

"............ In the land of the cheese and if I read it right, the new home for that weak-kneed quarterback Tim Couch ...... good luck.!"

Heh. I'm not worried. Up here, a back-up QB is a signal caller, janitor (mop up jobs, ya know), and a place holder on the roster, I just sure hope they don't think he's "the future".

    "and it's an *auto.?"

Yeah, sorry, forgot about that. You've got it dead on. Tires are basically new. It was traded in by a dealer employee and they got new rubber on it through warranty or something. But, they're nice BF Goodrichs.

But otherwise, a big DARN! I was hoping to flip my car for the 300M I asked you about before. hahaha Maybe 6 months from now, when that thing is still sitting there...

Thanks, as always for the great job. Don't sweat the critics.
