    1999 Chrysler LHS. Location: Minneapolis
Car has 79,000 highway miles, dark grey/black leather, no sunroof or autostick, otherwise the LHS came with all the toys. Rubber has between 7-9K miles on it. Car looks and drives great, everything works. Whats it worth going down retail road?

             ===========================================

The 3rd time is hopefully the charm .l.o.l..

In the land of the Vikings we have a 99 LHS with 80 klicks, it's that charcoalish color with the black guts, tires are ho-hum with no slider ..

If the service is 100%, no K-mart kisses, no soccer Mom interior, no I scraped the front off at Popeyes chicken and we need that cold breeze, if so .. Trade side, in and around the mid/high $4's, maybe on a good day and with the proper alignment with Mars and Venus someone "might" see the low low low low low $5's - if it needs stuff, start deducting ..... down the curvy winding path to Retail Rd, maybe some rubber, definatly finish any service, a State of the Art detail and a super Ad, $6,900 *asking* and let that dude go at the first $5,5/$6,5 .. LHS's are kinda like John Kerry, lots of miles and plastic glitter doesn't excite the buying market ...

"I've decided I'd rather go fishing then car shopping......"

That'll last til winter when it's -230 degrees outside and you have nothing left to do except ponder your next car purchase.
  • bdevil81bdevil81 Member Posts: 22
I'm close to terms on the following (which you valued in a previous response +/- $19.5k)

    2000 Z3/2.3/5 speed/premium pkge/leather/CD
    28k miles
    Bronze/tan top and seats
    75% new matching tires
clean and in good condition in South Florida
    $22k asking without CPO

Dealer upgraded to CPO and countered my $19.5 with $21. Next we throw in an early lease buyout. They peg the difference in my lease buyout to trade value at $1,700 - which matches fairly well with your guidance and my research.

The latest offer from the dealer is $21.9k all in. This seems pretty close to the right price, what do you think?
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Are you kidding?? I won't go car shopping in the winter, its too darn cold. Course when I bought my 04 Explorer all my car shopping was done online and over the phone. If hubby's not logging this winter he'll be around to keep me in line.

Need some help here in Orange County California. We have a 2002 Civic EX coupe, silver, auto, side bags, with 28K miles. New baby is on the way and we need to move up to a bigger vehicle. The car was rear-ended and took about $5k in damage, all repaired well. The only good news is the car is paid off. What is your estimate on this one.

    Thanks for your help.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
ill give this one a shot. we just traded for one here, ironically with about the same amount of repaired damage to the rear.

we have an almost 3 year old, lowish mileage 2-door slushbox that is still under warranty. if the repair work is perfect, tires and brakes are newish, the maintenance is current, including the 30k mile service, and a good strong detail is performed, you should see around the mid-to-upper $9k's, and MAYBE the low low low $10's, if the dealer needs a deal bad enough.

being in the OC, you MIGHT see an extra couple hunskies for the high gas mileage car.

good luck and keep me posted.

    Terry..here's what I'm looking to trade-in:

    1999 BWM 528i; 66K, no accidents
Black with tan leather. Auto. Runs really well. Brand new 19" tires (Bridgestone Potenza ~$1100) with 19" custom chrome rims (~$2100). Fully loaded. Sunroof/moonroof. 6 CD changer. All power. Memory driver seat.

Only issues were that the ABS control went out, replaced with factory unit (~$940) and fixed an oil gasket leak (~$400). Otherwise no major problems.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
I'm not sure of the value of the car, but I guarantee the custom wheels aren't helping. Throw the stock wheels back on, if you have them, and put the 19s on eBay.

I remember a while back someone asked about canadian vehicles and resale and Terry pointed out that these vehicles are true mileage unknown due to the speedo/ odo swapout. Is this the case also with the euro production ferrari 360's that I've seen pop up from time to time? I assume that they would require the same speedo / odo swap as well as other federalization modifications (which are probably pretty expensive)?
  • 307web307web Member Posts: 1,033
As long as it is clearly marked as kilometers, why can't people just deal with the metric mileage instead of replacing the odometers just so they display miles instead of kilometers? That's better than losing the accumulated mileage.
Can't any of the digital odometers be changed from km to miles without being reset to zero?

I'm curious in case there is a next time for me. My car was hit by a logsplitter that came unhitched from the vehicle towing it. It went through the bumper and alot of the stuff behind it (8K damage) right under the front plate. When they replaced the bumper cover they blended the paint into both fenders so as to make any color mismatch (light silver/green metallic) less noticible. It's a lease, so diminished value doesn't hurt me this time, although I thought about buying the car when it was worth a few thousand over buyout. Now I figure it's worth a few thousand under.
If I owned the car which way is better for retained value? Just painting the bumper and leaving the rest of the car alone even if it is slightly mismatched or doing the blending, which is noticable if you look hard, and might suggest more extensive bodywork than was actually done. Work was done by a Lexus-certified body shop, which I assume means it was a high quality repair.

Bowke, thats about what I figured...just wanted a 2nd opinion since its been a while since I've been in the car business.

....... ** My car was hit by a logsplitter that came unhitched from the vehicle towing it ** -- Is everyone ok.? .. were the airbags deployed.?

Hmmm, you weren't following some nutty girl with Alaskan plates were you ..?

$8 big ones.? -Ouch- it's hard to say .. it "sounds" like were talking brackets, support parts, mounts, radiator, trans cooler, condenser, control arms, etc, etc, etc .. I can't see it, so I dunno, then we have the paint and clearcoat and hopefully in the "right" spray booth - just bunches of stuff ..... it will depend on the finish work and it has to be done with all OEM parts and done by Picasso - (Paul Picasso, do you know him.?) .. whats going to kill ya is the mismatched paint, as more and more the seasons change, cold to hot and back again, the more it will show ... back to the lease co I would be thinkin' ~ unless you can flat steal it for 50cts on the dollar, thank goodness it's a lease .l.o.l... .............. :)

** One more follow up Terry!
Went to the Ford dealer on Tuesday and got $600 Trade-In - went for it and got a 2005 Escape! You were right on the money! (Going back to Carmax over $200 wasn't worth it for me) **

                    =========================================

I love these follow ups ...!

Sometimes it's better to get what you can upfront and fight for the rest (per my Grand Daddy) you had the type of vehicle that 8 dealers would give you 8 different values on, it's a 98 Escort, not a Piaget ....... you did fine.!

                                   Enjoy that new Escape.!!

Do you know what the letter "H" stands for in Houston .? ~ Humidity ........ good description, thanks.

Anyway, we have this 01 Ranger (XLT - right.?) 4x4 with the 4.0 V6, we have the 4dr Ecab, auto, power pack, tunes, tow pack and we have 68 big klicks and a few love taps here and there ... other than the taps, if it's clean, no click click in the 4x4, deep in the rubber department, service is all there, the bed doesn't have that refrigerator look, no repaints, no I drove behind Aka and got a log splitter in my grille ... then trade side, in and around the high $9's, low/mid $10's if it's a nice one and needs -0- .. the miles aren't your friend here .........

Good luck and let me know ......

Thanks !! I think the thing that worries me the most is the bumper. Nice little rear end job on one of those interstates in the Big Humidty town-- (really, really humid to be exact!!) But like I said it involves the bumper only. The trade in given to me was between 8-9 over the phone. I owe 9800. Ouch. Gonna try to give him a big grin and just maybe.......
  • stevesteinstevestein Member Posts: 263
    Akangl was nowhere in sight..
It came off a truck towing it going in the opposite direction and came into my lane. Fortunately it was an access road in a mall so no one was going fast, but I was downhill and it kept coming. I came to a stop before it hit , but it took out a clean 8" wide cut of everything below the license plate (which was unharmed) stopping just after cracking the oil pan. Looked like the car was hit by a meat cleaver. So we had the bumper, cross brace, A/C. radiator, one of the fans and whatever else hangs out there wiped out and replaced, thus the big $. No airbags or personal damage although I did manage to fall off a chair the next day (standing on it to sand the top of a door) and required 3 hrs of elbow surgery and 6 mos of rehab. Heck of a weekend!
So the question remains, which is worse...very slightly off color bumper or painted fenders (even though no damage to them).

****Hmmm, you weren't following some nutty girl with Alaskan plates were you ..?****

I swear it wasn't me!! Our log splitter only goes places in the bed of the truck secured with straps. Its too expensive to want to bounce off someone's grille.

I'm not laughing at you - I'm laughing "with" you .. gheez, a great story about a log splitter accident and you can't even claim the glory of all the splints, surgery or 6 months of Dr. visits ..... you must get kidded alot.

LS430 right, 01/04.? cypress, moonlite, maybe mercury.? (25% of males are color blind) but to answer your question, a bumper can be explained away, everything from the firewall forward can't .... do the bumper cover only, unless it's Attila the Hun and he's using his sons welding unit to paint with, then they should be able to make it 110% ...........

***97 328 coupe, white over blk leather.
100k, 5sp stick, sunroof, computer (I think), no aftermarket abominations.

Will need new summer tires "soon", extra snows (good tread) to go with the car.

This is his beater, he also has a 2003 M3. Really.

Maintained by the book, oil changes done as per on-board computer.

Two love taps; one guard rail, one deer. No frame damage, $3k each, done right by the body shop that the high-end dealer uses.

One little rust repair a year ago; a seam had let water through and was fixed... dunno if follow-up to earlier repairs. It's in great shape, treated with love and respect by a BMW nut job.

How much at the auction? How much on the street? ***

    Pretty please? -Mathias

01 LS 430 .. in Lexus speak - Mystic Sea Opalesant

This all happened in April. After the fact, based on what I had learned here, I thought I should have just taken my chances with the bumper match but wanted to make sure. It's hard to make good decisions about auto repair when you're on percocets. The LS goes back in Oct. Shame because it only has 31K today and probably was worth 3-4K over buyout and I was considering buying it. Best car I ever owned, and as solid as the day I bought it. I got an SC430 as soon as I got out of my cast because I was bummed, and it made me happy. My wife and I are rediscovering the fun of evening rides with the top down. I also bought the correct headgear to fully be the cliched OMWAH.

I'm sure you just shrugged off the bs from that dietcoke guy, but just let me add that you have earned my respect for the time and effort that you put into helping people here and the knowledge you bring.

I've seen dozens of these dudes with rust work, mostly around the slider, it's like pimples, you can pop em' but that doesn't make them go away, unless it's done right ....... Retail Rd (done right) they still see $$ ~ $8,9 would be a-l-l of it - but $6,9 would be the way to go ........................ let me know.

I also had a Mr. "Aren't I wonderful" (actually his wife's car) try trading in her A8, nice vehicle, low in the miles department and other than everything from the cradle "up" being replaced (Darn good job I might add!) it was perfect, anyway he had it in the Tampa paper back in May after we couldn't agree on price, or his stats for the 03 season .l.o.l...

    As Terry said:

     *Yikes.! 40k on a 03 ..?*

Problem is, you've got a Range Rover with only 10K miles left on the warranty (I think--unless it has ext. warr.--which would be great). Have you ever owned a Land Rover product? Or checked out any of the owner's reviews or message boards on Edmunds? Owning one even under warranty can be trying--out of warranty; I can't even imagine. Then there's the depreciation--which is awful, & continues to be awful even if/after you get a "good deal" on a used one. Then, there's the abysmal gas mileage......

But they are beautiful vehicles. If you "have to have one", I'd pay more to get a low mileage one with PLENTY of factory warranty left. The extra $$ spent upfront will pay off in repair $$ saved, & easier resale later on. Just my 2 cents......

Car has 130,000 Exterior-one small ding.Interior leather no craks or rips. Tires exec. Leaks some oil and burns a little (Two quarts between changes). Still can't hear motor run at idle and plenty of pep. My wife wants a new car and I will trade this one in. What is it worth to a dealer?
Thanks! rickd1 Location is New Jersey Shore

To those who remember the gal with the Cavalier needing a windshield. Here is what I told her to do. Clean it up really nice, get all the maintenance records together (which she had) and put them on the passenger front seat. Make up a really nice set of 5 X 7 cards with a picture of the car (digital) and put it up at all the local laundry-mats bulletin boards with a price of $1000.

Ad went like this. 94 Cavalier, all maintenance up to date, ready to drive, 127K miles, runs and drives good, $1000, call ####### and can be seen at ######. Under the picture it listed all the options. She had a cash offer of $800, this weekend, and took it. She was quite happy because the ad she paid for in the paper and asking of $1500 got one call and no looks. Was not a good 5 liner either.

At least she has enough for a down payment on a car that will take the 40 miles to work each day. She was last looking at the Ford dealer for a "certified" 2001 Taurus with a price of $8,000 and something like 40K on it, and a 3 yr 36K warranty of some kind.

jump on that taurus. the certified program makes the rate 4.9% up to 60 months, and the powertrain warranty goes up to 6/75k with roadside asst. GREAT deal!

..... ** It's hard to make good decisions about auto repair when you're on percocets **

Your lucky you didn't go home in a 01 light green Cavalier .l.o.l.. yep, they are nice vehicles, so I feel your pain .. if you think your going to keep it for the next 4/5 years and the work is "right" (and the price is right) then the repairs will become a mute point .... and thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it!

As long as it's a Dominican or a Cuban I'll take it ..!

In H-town we have a 02 EX dark maroonish Ody with 28k, we got leather and we got some bumps and lumps ... if the rubber is deep, service is 100%, then trade side: depending on the dealer, in and around the low to mid $18's, someone might be a brave Hiawatha and wander into the tall $18's, "maybe" the low low low low low low $19's if it's really nice and needs -0- .......... :)

                             Let me know ......!

** The latest offer from the dealer is $21.9k all in. This seems pretty close to the right price, what do you think? **

Sounds like your standing right on it .. the cpo is worth at least $1,500 ....... hows that go again.? those who hesitate ......
