Thanks.....You may need rest from your vacation!
Well I heard there was more to look at than Heritage Softails and the Black Hills -- unless we are re-defining Softail.....
We had a shop do a complete teardown of the front end (frame perfect, no balloons went off) and replace the fender and other parts - no bondo, factory paint. I did read Mathias's reference url on what to look for.... It is difficult to tell work was done.
So....in your humble opinion are my dollars better protected with the 3 year old LX or a new Denali if I'm looking for a 6 to 8 year hitch???
Shouldn't these both be around $40 big ones ??
Oh, yes, the boat. It's a Teal and White Searay Signature 200 -- which is a 20 foot bowrider -- with a Mercruiser Alpha One pushed by a 5.0 litre V8. It tops at 4300 lbs with trailer on the local truck scale. Love going to the Colorado River with it.
I'd move to your side just for the boating, but my wife would have a hard time with the humidity....
Welcome back - thanks for the help....
You know, 3 years ago my younger daughter had a liver fail and Children's Hospital in LA swapped it out. We needed extra clean air in our house and the CHLA experts advised us on the electronic (not electrostatic) air cleaners. It is a $500 to $600 unit by either Honeywell, Trion or AprilAire that sits under the furnace. It'll cost a few more $$ to get installed unless you guys are handy. They clean down to sub-micron size. This removes all smoke easily, but also viruses, germs, etc.
We run our furnace on "fan only" now just because we like the crisp clean air it creates.
If you have seasonal smoky or other bad air - this might make a difference.
CHLA tested our indoor air late last year and said we were close to clean enough to make computer chips in our kitchen LOL

1990 Plymouth Horizon, 137K, warm a/c, 5spd, bad tires, runs good, some rust, needs work, $900. What, maybe $250 top dollar. Local Autotrader.
2003 Hyundai Elantra GT, fully loaded, excellent condition, 33K miles, $16,545. Is this person buried in a loan or what? Local Paper.
1995 Chevy Lumina, $2,000, well maintained, excellent condition, like new, 245K miles. Yeh right, like new, in his dreams. Local Paper.
And for the two that tops them all:
1988 Olds Ciera, 4cyl, auto, 4dr, 193K miles, driven by Grandma, asking $2500 firm. Local Autotrader.
1984 Plymouth Reliant Wagon, 85K actual miles, some rust (total rust bucket with no paint left), needs some work, appraised $1150, asking $1100. Been in the local autotrader since March, I wonder why. I have seen this one, the needs work is a headgasket and cooling system problems. The vehicle belongs in a scrap yard.
People can ask what they want, getting it is another story. As to the TT, I am in agreement, if you had an offer of 25% over your ACV trade values, you should have taken it if it was a real world money offer.
About $10k worth of buried, if they're shooting for payoff...
Amd somehow "like new" and "245K miles" just don't seem to match...
Wow. You're really really good at justifying this stuff. You know what kind of air purification equipment you could've bought for 1/10th what you spent on a camper?
Based on what Terry said earlier I felt that private party offer was low, as were the trade in values, that's why I said bye bye to 'em all. I'm waiting for somebody else to twaddle up and buy it....I mean it is the lowest priced 2001 225 Quattro in Texas (on AutoTrader at least).
But we each have different needs and wants. If Jolie wants the lifestyle of a camper, that's her choice and it's her money. She doesn't have to justify it to anybody else at all. In fact, I haven't heard her offering any justifications - so far she's just responded to questions.

I'm sure it's similiar now. As far as I'm concerned, this board exists to help people get the best info they can when it comes to buying or selling a car--Terry's help in that regard is second to none. What the board can't do is make our decisions for us.
Lastly, as was pointed out, it IS a different world there. I think Jolie's lived there long enough to know whether 10xxx for her pop up is just a case of someone ripping her off or if it's the Alaska effect.
Example, here in WI, sticker on Jolie's unit $7935, excluding prep and destination. Season is close to winding down here, so I bet they go for less than that. Great. But, that does nothing to help someone in Alaska. Unless you want to visit, Jolie. Weather has been remarkably great this year--actually, a little cool for most of the summer. I don't think we've hit 90 all year. (Normally, should have 4 or 5 days of 90+ so far). And no fires! Or hurricanes!
Edit: Took a closer look at the "build it" on a local RV dealer's website and this thing can be had with "heated bed mats". I'm going to the NASCAR race this weekend in a friend's 36' top end motorhome and I'm remembering why I like it so much. Heated bed mats on a pop-up! Unreal...
I rented a 31 ft. class C this summer and had the most fun that I have had traveling in a long time. I plan on renting a class A the next time and going for two weeks through the West. There is something to be said of unpacking once and going at your own pace stopping when you want whether it be at a nice RV park or at Walmart boon-docking.

Realize that there are many folks who ask $2995 for a car like that and get offended when they're offered $1200, because they want to recoup every penny of every maintenance dollar spent on the car (this is many people's justification).
You might list it just under $1,500 (it's NOT that much money!) with an "OBO" - you may still only get $700-800, but you might also get $1200-1300...
Remember Jim's first lesson - YOU ONLY GET WHAT YOU ASK FOR.
I currently have a 2001 volvo, s 40 with about 65000 miles on it. It has traction control, power seats, moonroof, automatic, good condition, cd changer. Using gavles.com the price( ?) auction price is about 8700. Using black book, the wholesale (average) is about 10500. Would it be possible for you to tell me which figure is correct and why there is a huge difference? I live in northern new Jersey and the car is Dark Green and it has not been in an accident.
Thank You for your help.
Mike R
If you price it at $1500, you will be eliminating a lot of "cash only" folks that might be willing to overlook its shortcomings. There are a lot of guys working temp at the local Labor Ready office or pushing a mower for the local landscaper who need something cheap and *might* be able to scrape together $1000 MAX who will walk away when they see YOUR car in rough condition. Been there, done that.
I guess it is all a matter of whether your goal if to get the planter out of your front yard *OR* to maximize your return on your sled. If you wanted to do the latter, you shoulda gotten rid of it 10 years ago ...
Just my 0.02 worth ...
I'm kinda curious as to where Terry stands on that one...

Besides, you give it a week at $1495 OBO, and if that doesn't work, make it $995 OBO - what's a week? Might be worth an easy $300-400!

I was wondering if you might know what the current trade in value would be on an '05 Chevy Equinox LT. 4600 miles. It's the FWD version with LT Option Package, XM Radio, Towing Package. Sticker was 27.7k. Since it is brand new it doesn't show in the books anywhere. How can we find a value?

Here's the kicker, cylinder #3 is out according to the seller. Therefore it needs major engine work. They are asking $5500. What do you think?
Got one for you up here in CT (Watertown, to be exact)... found a 2000 VW Passat GLX V6 in very nice shape that I'm seriously considering. Silver with black leather interior, *manual* tranny (woohoo!), about 41500 clicks, loaded... power everything, sunroof, heated seats with memory (driver's), single disc added to the standard Monsoon cassette audio system (don't think there's a changer), keyless with alarm, auto dimming mirror, nifty multi-function computer (trip, mileage, etc), single-zone auto climate control... you get the idea. All of that is actually standard on the GLX with the exception of the CD, I believe. It's a "certified" used VW, which means it also comes with a 2yr/24K mile warranty from time of purchase. Dealer is asking $14995... what do you think is a price we can agree on?
Thanks for your help...
I'm guessing that the engine work ( a full rebuild or replacement engine) is going to be major dollars, but assuming you could get it fixed for $4,500, thats still only 10K for a BMW with a fresh motor.

Great description - thanks.! .. in the land of Frazier we have a 98 Altima SE with 78k, hydes, slider, good color anywhere, we got the service going on, we have that funny movin' around thing between the seats and we have a few little battle scars ... if the rubber is deep, the breeze is cold and no KFC living under the seats .. then trade side, depending on the dealer, in and around the mid/tall $3's, maybe the low low low $4's, the miles (low for the year) and the handshaker is no Valentine gift for the dealer .....
Me personally, I would send this pup down Retail Rd - super detail, finish any service, services records hangin' from the mirror, great ad ~ $6,900 *asking* and kick it loose for the first $5,5/$6,5 ... schools are ready to open, so properly done this will sell easily with the leather, the slider and even the handshaker ... I'm not much of a betting man, but I would bet someone will give you $5,999.99 if you give this bad boy some "eyes" ...........
let me know how it goes..!

Super nice vehicles .... No runs no hits no errors ..? we got noooo miles going on here, right color, nav and we have the Levi sound .. CPO.? if it's super nice, no paint work, stand tall, superb history, then the dealer probably has at least the $39/$40,0 figure in it ... $43,5 is a deal ~ 14k.?!? - can't get em' - can't find em' .... if it checks out, Be There ..!

my trouble is this...
we have about a dozen identical cars to mine on the lot, in white and red, but with 25k-30k miles. we have $9k in those, and he tells me all he can give is $9k. do you think $9.5k is out of line considering its front-line ready every time i come to work?
>>>12k mile oil change<<<
I try to go 15k-30k between oil changes, using Wal-Mart SuperTech oil and sometimes a new filter, even though my car isn't supposed to need tune-ups until 105,000 miles.
Looks like $4700 for a reman 2.8 engine, $5200 for performance options. $237 for a new clutch. 5 year warranty. They don't have the newer 3.0 listed, but I wonder if it would be a direct fit. Of course, I also wonder if a M3 engine/tranny would be a direct fit...
Of course, you'll have to pay for installation, and to get it to your neck of the woods from California. Realistically, I know it's tempting, but even if the engine replacement works flawlessly, you're looking at a seven-eight year old Teutonic machine with nearly 100k miles on everything but the engine. Plenty of stuff could still go wrong. By the time you replace the engine (parts, shipping, and labor) and fix the dings and scratches, you could be looking at $15k easy, not to mention your time and effort.
Maybe if you are buying it on speculation, and you have plenty of free time, and a place to do the engine swap yourself or someone who can do it cheaply, AND you can get a used engine from a junked car instead of a reman...

As far as the tranny, it was a sequential build of 31(?) trannys that were delivered that can be found from the service department, miles are kinda ho-hum, but not bad for an Acura or a Lexus, if properly serviced, good color for the area ..
If we have no drive-by's, no terrorists attacks, just a nice vehicle that someone cared for the last 8 years, deep in the rubber department and serviced properly .. then the dealer might "could" have the $10ish figure in it ... $14,5.? - that's special alright .l.o.l.. $12,5 is nice and $12,9 will flat kill it .................. ain't that special.! ........
Terry.
Terry, english translation please.
I have the exact same car with similar miles and I'd like to know about my tranny.
thanks for confirming my idea...sometimes, one just needs an objective opinion.
25/30k SE's aren't doing much more than the tall $7's, low $8's on a real good day .. so I'm assuming the $9,0 figure is with pack, right.? .. did he buy these at the auctions.? .. what happens sometimes, is they buy online, or tap the first 10/12 going thru and they quit and go home .. if they "study" the market, they will find out that they will pay almost same for the nice low milers with a little patience ..
25/30k vehicles are a dime dozen and buyers will shop those til' the second coming of Jesus, low milers are hard to find, but they might be using these as "switch" vehicles for the payment buyers ........ $9,0 is ALL the money on a low miler, and $8,0 is ALL the money on a 25ker .............
Terry.
i guess im just irked that i sold one of the 28k milers for $10.9k and only got a lousy $200 commission...i figure that they should jump an extra $500 for the crazy pack they load on the used cars (34% of gross).
current buyout is only $10400, so im not terribly buried...but im trying to get into an altima lease, and each $500 equates to about $16 a month in payment.
Been awhile since I posted in here. Quick question. The wife's Silver 2000 Solara is about at the end of it's lease. The buyout for the lease is $9300. Wondering what you think it's worth. Here's the specs:
2000 Solara SE (silver)
4 banger - manual
40,000 miles
all options EXCEPT leather, alarm, and cd changer
new rubber
new rotors/brakes
1 door ding
a few small scratches (which could probably be buffed out)
