Luckily we made it through this hurricane with no damage, thank G-d. My cousin 9 miles up the road lost power and part of her building lost almost all the shingles. Tough old bird won't leave and come to stay with us, so we're bringing her all her meals. I hope this is the end for Florida...don't know how much more we can take! Hi Terry, can you give me a number that I can use in negotiations. I have a 2002 Honda Civic Si, Black, with 15,000 miles, clean condition (as per Edmunds' definition). FIRST and FOREMOST - you need to have the TSC and check engine lights diagnosed, and preferably corrected - a dealer or private buyer has no way of knowing whether it's a $200 repair or a $2000 repair - the smart thing for ANY buyer or appraiser to do is avoid a vehicle with warning lights activated - warning lights means something's broke!!
Also, with 97,500 miles, you're out of contention for retail sale - your best best is to get the vehicle repaired, then detail it nicely, then advertise it privately.
And read my post #20851 before your next step.
HOLD THE PHONE - didn't notice this before:
"broken taillight lens, 6" crack in windshield on passanger side at bottom"
Both components will require replacement - period - before selling or trading.
but telling a buyer "You have to replace the brake lamp, that's $350, it needs a new windshield, that's $600, and Bubba down at the garage said teh "check engine" light is because he thinks it might need a new EGR Valve ($500) or a new engine ($6,000), he's not sure...and the traction control light is on because the two front ABS sensors have failed ($400 each, plus labor).
Sure, it's all disclosed to you, but hearing all of that would make me run like a nose in cold & flu season!

Ok. This sounds reasonable. What I am planning to do now is take the vehicle to a Toyota dealer service center. I am going to have the whole thing looked over and get an estimate on repair. Assuming this this is not catastrophic, I will repair any mechanical problems, replace the windshield, etc. Anything that is not repaired by me I will get additional estimates on. This way the buyer will have a complete report on the vehicle from the dealer and the average cost of any needed repairs. Ok, so I figure the car now will be worth X dollars minus the cost of these repairs. So the question to you now is: what is the value of X?
Value of "X"? That depends on the extend of needed repairs - a Highlander with a reman engine is worth less than one that justed needed an oxygen sensor.
Check with the Toyota dealer's sales manager while you're there - they ALWAYS, like Honda stores, have folks looking for non-retail vehicles with some miles on them for use as a college car.
What I mean to say is that this vehicle with these miles in excellent condition would be worth X dollars. A car that is less than excellent would be worth X dollars minus the cost of repairs. My question is what is X?
there is no "X" on a 100,000 mile vehicle until you know what's wrong with it - repaired or not, what's wrong with it now matters in the future - it can be a strong indication of the pattern of maintenance or damage -
It's not as simple as you'd like it to be - you'll notice there's NO section in NADA, Galves, or Kelley for a Toyota Highlander with body damage and mechanical problems, especially those specific to your vehicle - now, if you'll let me know what's wrong with it, I'll do my best.

Nothing major of course, just everything that Frances missed a few weeks ago ... just a few roofs, a few tree's, a few homes, a few roads, a few boats, a few bridges, a few hotels, a few vehicles, a few towns, a few people and a few beaches, other than that .... hey, in another 6/9 months and Florida will look just like new .......

What did they offer..?
It's a a 02, we have the 4 banger, sounds like a 2wd, we have 32k, pwer pack and (ouch) it's a handshaker, no good news here ... depending on where you live, trade side, in and around the mid/tall $8's, maybe the low low low $9's on a good day ....... who sold you this one, Drew Carey.?
Re: Any idea what this might be worth? .. Shaygirl [woodyww] by shaygirl Sep 24, 2004 (6:20 pm)
Bookmark | Reply Woody, it's a great car, I love it, just too small for the baby and all his gear. Looking at an MDX, nice car but doesn't have the same heavy feel as the A4 if that makes sense. I've just finished paying the A4 off, so nice to know I have a rare bird that might command some money. The only other 2001 A4 2.8 Avant I could find on ...
===========================
Hmm, we are trading in a loaded up Avant for a SUV because we need the room for the new baby .. maybe a candidate for the CCBA.? ...........
Hiya Terry, Good thing you're back, your typing hasn't changed so you kept at least two fingers, and you don't even sound a little bit bitter... it's good to have you back!
Neighbor's car: 2000 Blazer 4x4 (LS? don't say on the back) 44,000 miles (Hamdulillah!) four door pewter, cloth interior, requisite power stuff, no roof, cheesy Chevy alloys. Good tread on name-brand tires. No hits no paint no errors. No smoking, either. A small leak here or there, let's say the diffy and front main seal will get fixed and then it's fine...
He's thinkin' he owes $8,500 on it, I'm thinkin' he *may* get it on trade, what with the low miles... surely on the street, no? But I don't do 4x4's....
...... Yeah yeah .. just find me about 10 roofers and cement guys and I'll be set to go, oh yeah, throw a few electricians in there ....
00 Blaaaazer 4dr LS, miles are short, it has the 4wd and the power pack, good color too ... dealer will probably drop the high $6's low $7's in it ... you should be seeing snow in about, what, 2wks.? .. sounds like it would make a good buy - dealers will be getting the tall $8's, low $9's on the retail side .....
I need a little advice on this one. I'm thinking of getting rid of my Sienna and getting another car. I'm not sure if it would be wise to buy a used car or get a new car. If I got a used car, it would be a 2000 Nissan Maxima. If I got a new car, it would be a 2005 Nissan Altima. The bad thing about the Sienna is the fact that it has over 63,000 miles on it and I owe quite a bit on it (around $18,500). I've appraised it online and it's about $11,500 traded in (probably lower at the dealer). Please let me know if I should wait another year or try and get out of it. I greatly appreciate it.
============================
02 Yota Sienna CE ~ with 63,000 miles .. get yourself a better dating service.! .. I know, you have a paper route, right.? ....... and you owe $18,500.? is that in Bolivian money.? it's worth the high $10's low $11's depending on the condition and the geographic area of the country and there's no palm tree going through the roof .... these are pretty nice vehicles, properly serviced they will see 125,000 miles+ .. keep it serviced, keep it deep in rubber, keep it clean .. in other words - Keep it.!
Thanks Terry. Nice crack about the snow. You're entitled to it after all the weather you've had.
Good heavens, I won't buy the Blazer, it's got a nasty habit of developing leaks and stuff... he wants out, I thought I'd ask what it's worth. He might be made whole on the street; he'll just have to dig up the cash short-term to do it right... 4x4 GM vehicles are a fairly easy sell around here, especially with short miles, esp. for < $10. I think :-)
I personally think these are awful vehicles. If GM, I'd go fullsize every time... suv, truck, van, no matter... that's what they do best.
2001 Maxima GLE with ALL the options, AUTO, beige, very clean in and out, top-notch maintenance, new tires and 80 K miles.
Need to know private party value.
Here's the thing though - got rear-ended a month ago – bumper’s slightly bent (you have to really look to notice), and a few scratch marks left on bumper.
My dilemma - buy, paint and install a new bumper for about $500, or do nothing? What is my private-party value, AS IS vs. with NEW BUMPER?
Glad to see you survived yet another hurricane. We have nasty roads and snow. I'm figuring if I make it home with the Titan (no snow tires) in one piece on Saturday I'll be doing good.
Can you toss me a value for this car, my mom is having a rough time after her shoulder surgery (read: out of work during recovery) and wants to know if she can dump it. I say no and am making her car payment for her.
2002 Subaru Legacy L wagon, AWD/auto, silver/gray, power windows/locks, cruise, am/fm/cd, a/c, no hits or runs, car is in very good condition. Has good snow tires on it now (yup, I bought those too). Miles are hanging around 40k I believe (I haven't been home in 12 days, so haven't seen the car).
First, look back for the reference to a posting regarding 100K and older cars and read it carefully.
You have a near 100K miles manual tranny bare bones Ford Escort Wagon. Where is the good news? BTW: Any flood damage recently? Has it ever been smoked in?
It is a $1000 (give or take a bit) wholesale car all day long. Should see around $2,000 or a little bit more on a good day retail side. #1 thing against it, manual tranny. Most Grocery go getter Moms can't drive a manual. The cleaner and better driving the car, add a couple of hundred dollars to your asking.
Why are you getting rid of it? If it has been that reliable, keep it clean and maintenance up to date and keep driving it. Gas prices seem to be going up and up and it gets good gas mileage.
Location: SF Bay Area Year: 2001 Make/Model: QX4 4 wheel drive Mileage:43,240 Engine: 6 cyl Transmission - Manual Color - Green / Tan Major Options - alloys, sun roof, power memory seats, leather, 4WD, cold weather package
Condition: Interior - no rips, good condition. Exterior - good condition - a few nicks. Tires - original, but good Brakes Maintenance - all done on schedule Other: ***Vehicle was hit on the right side when it was 2 months old - damage was $9,000 - all repaired to as new. Lease buy out is $18,931, curious about realistic trade in value on a new one.
We are interested in a new car because the kids are getting bigger and the back seat is getting a little too cramped for them. No flood damage, non smoker. By the way I forgot power windows and locks. Thanks for your advise.
I bet in Europe, an A4 Avant is a highly desirable car for a small family. Maybe gas going to $3 will change attitudes here, a bit.
BTW, did anyone see the recent WSJ article about how prices of used, full sized truck-based SUV's (Tahoes, Expeditions, etc.) have been plunging? (Man, am I glad I dumped that Range Rover a couple of years ago). Just to throw an opinion out there: this energy thing may not be temporary; & there's a good possibility it may get worse. A year or 2 from now, people may be trading 2.8 L Audi A4's for Toyota hybrids, not larger SUV's.....
>>Hmm, we are trading in a loaded up Avant for a SUV because we need the room for the new baby .. maybe a candidate for the CCBA.? ...........
That's the truth. We have 2 trucks (the Titan and a Ram V10), both gas hogs, so we bought the Focus to offset them.
We had toyed with trading the Ram, but its worth exactly ZERO, ZIP, NADA to a dealer, even though its rediculously low miles (its a 99 with 22k on it) and in good shape.
I like driving a 4x4 truck, but I cringe every time I fill it up and its a $50+ fill up. The Ram is worse its usually around $70+. Neither truck will go over 350 miles on a tank (28 gal on the Titan and 35 gal on the Ram). The Focus is a $23 fill up and will go about 350 miles on that.
I'm seeing more and more 4x4 SUVs for sale on dealer lots. Also seeing a lot more AWD cars on the road in their place. I think that trend will continue as gas prices climb.
sorry, jpribil, it was kind of an inside joke, in a way, just meant that blue book is not representative, most of the time, of real world trade in values. discussions on the "books" have been had here many times. if you are interested, you could probably run a search and read up on it. It is really good info for car shoppers.
As far as your car and trading it or selling it, it is always going to be more profitable to sell it privately when you are talking about a low-dollar car like this. If, for instance, it is worth $750 on a trade like drift said, you could easily get a quick $1200 if it looks and runs decent from some high school kid looking for his first ride. But let's see what Terry says any different as far as its value goes. good luck.

Hi there, looking to get an idea on what I might get on this trade:
Southern California (Orange County, south of LA) 2003 Acura RSX 2 door hatchback 2.0L, 4 cyl., Automatic 30,000 miles silver/black leather, single CD player, ABS, front and side air bags, alloy wheels, moon roof, keyless entry - all standard stuff Good condition inside and out - a few dings on the outside and some wear on the leather inside, otherwise in good condition. Original tires, probably have another 15 - 20K miles left Front brakes are 7,000 miles old, rear brakes are brand new. All regular maintenance has been performed. The rear bumper was replaced due to cosmetic damage - no structural damage.

Tires - 20% worn Brakes - 6 months old Maintenance - fairly regular oil changes, etc. :-) Other: No wrecks or damage
on a 2002 Chevy express G3500 ext. sport van: mileage 35,800 5.7 ltr 15 passenger LS package tinted windows pw, pd,ps tilt, cruise power mirrors (heated) rear ac, heat am/fm cassette rwd 3door
Nice update on the "suggested information" bite. Thanks, hosts!
I have an update to my previous post regarding diminished value on the 2004 GMC Canyon SLE (2-door, regular cab): 5-cylinder automatic Power windows/locks/mirrors, tilt, cruise, CD player, alloy wheels. Fire engine red, 1000 miles, new tires/brakes.
Upon further inspection, there is more damage than anyone initially noticed. The obvious damage occurred to the tailgate, bumper, hitch, and bumper bracket. However, we can now see that the tailgate itself is slightly bowed, the bed is scratched where the bumper impacted it, and the cab has two large dimples along the top where the bed banged into it. One of the plastic wheelwell guards in the rear is snapped out. After seeing that, I am not even convinced that the thing is safe to drive. I don't know if it is possible to restore it to its pre-accident condition. It was a brand new vehicle, and Dad wants it totalled. What sort of teardowns and inspections are called for given that the impact was hard enough that the bed snapped up and banged into the cab?
Condition: Paint still shines Few scratches on rear bumper Immaculate interior Tires @ 40% worn Original brakes Maintained at private shops (where I watch what they do) Regular oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks/refills

Woody, it's a great car, I love it, just too small for the baby and all his gear. Looking at an MDX, nice car but doesn't have the same heavy feel as the A4 if that makes sense. I've just finished paying the A4 off, so nice to know I have a rare bird that might command some money. The only other 2001 A4 2.8 Avant I could find on ...

Hmm, we are trading in a loaded up Avant for a SUV because we need the room for the new baby .. maybe a candidate for the CCBA.? ...........

Good thing you're back, your typing hasn't changed so you kept at least two fingers, and you don't even sound a little bit bitter... it's good to have you back!
Neighbor's car:
2000 Blazer 4x4 (LS? don't say on the back)
44,000 miles (Hamdulillah!)
four door
pewter, cloth interior, requisite power stuff,
no roof, cheesy Chevy alloys.

Terry.
Thanks again,
-Mathias

2001 Maxima GLE with ALL the options, AUTO, beige, very clean in and out, top-notch maintenance, new tires and 80 K miles.
Need to know private party value.
Here's the thing though - got rear-ended a month ago – bumper’s slightly bent (you have to really look to notice), and a few scratch marks left on bumper.
My dilemma - buy, paint and install a new bumper for about $500, or do nothing? What is my private-party value, AS IS vs. with NEW BUMPER?
Thanks!

$750 on a good day.

Brakes
Maintenance - all done on schedule
Other: ***Vehicle was hit on the right side when it was 2 months old - damage was $9,000 - all repaired to as new.
Lease buy out is $18,931, curious about realistic trade in value on a new one.
Thanks!
>>Hmm, we are trading in a loaded up Avant for a SUV because we need the room for the new baby .. maybe a candidate for the CCBA.? ...........
Terry.
But let's see what Terry says any different as far as its value goes. good luck.

I have an update to my previous post regarding diminished value on the 2004 GMC Canyon SLE (2-door, regular cab):
5-cylinder automatic
Power windows/locks/mirrors, tilt, cruise, CD player, alloy wheels.

I've tried to log-on a few times and it didn't work .. is this a Edmunds problem or is it that Florida is running on 50% electricity.?
