Terry, you said: <snip> You haven't sold this clunker yet.?
It's a 93 SE-R with 60k tiny miles, color is good, rubber is weak, we got the meat clever, no slider, cold breeze, no power pack, almost new stoppers and it needs a few things ....
You can grab some rubber at the Sears sale (you do have a Sears in Utah.?) and get a new lens at a yard or check a Nissan dealer, or online ... great vehicle for Retail Rd .. clean that puppy up, finish any service - as far as Ad's, I would just get a super nice 4/5 liner in the biggest paper in your area (you do have papers there.?) you are even close enough to also run it in SLC, it's about 40 miles away(?) and there is like 30,000+ students at BYU and it's right down the street and run it for 14 days .. if it cleans up real nice, runs super you shouldn't have a problem selling it .. $3,900 *asking* and $2,9/$3,5 gets a new owner ....
let me know ... <snip>
I put the new fog lites on like you said. I've done pretty well putting "rare" cars on eBay in the past, so I decided to give eBay a shot. I know I got more $$$ for my '74 260Z and '87 Alfa Spider on eBay than I would have locally. I put it up there with a $3250 reserve and a $3995 buy-it-now. I offered to put new rubber on it if the "buy-it-now" was hit. I got 16 bids in 2 days, then just before it hit the reserve someone pulled the trigger on the buy-it-now. Sweeeet... The cashier's check showed up via express mail two days later, and I dropped the car off at the shipping terminal Friday and said goodbye.
So where's it going? Puerto Rico. I kid you not. My first eBay sale went to Pocatello ID, the second to New Jersey, now this one to PR. At this rate I'll be shipping to outer Mongolia next...
Thanks again for the help, Jason
Oh, and the listing is here, if you're interested. Already closed, so it should be OK.
i'd just be curious to hear from you when the buyer gets the car and says everything is a-ok. at this point i'd be worried about an email with "hey! i thought i had automatic nose hair clippers in the glovebox!" Not that it matters now, but its just a hassle. Oh, and did you hear the one about the fake cashiers checks coming from overseas?

Yeah, I heard about the fake cashier's checks. Puerto Rico is just like any other US state from a financial perspective so you don't get the float that can happen with an overseas check. My credit union assured me the check was hunky dory. Plus eBay's fraud / customer service office is here in Utah and I have a contact there. He took a look at the guy's history and didn't see any red flags.
As for unexpected surprises on delivery, that does worry me a bit. I try to be super detailed on describing any flaws, and so far the folks I've sold stuff to have been pretty happy with the condition.

Well, I put both the white '94 E320 and the white '99 Suburban 4x4 at the Sell-Yourself lot this last weekend. Several serious nibbles on the E320, but only one 1/2 serious call on the Sub'. The MB was listed at $6950, and I wanted $6500, the Sub listed at $11,900 and I could be talked down to $11,500. (Terry, see I was paying attention to your advice) I'm not sure if the market is that soft - particularly for big SUV's right now, or the lot is merely better for the bottom feeders of the world
Here are the refresher details: 1994 E320 White with a Grey leather interior, 145,xxx, All electric, including memory seats, factory Becker stereo and an Alpine 6-CD changer in the back, Garaged or covered always , I've got All the records, about 5K left on the tires , and it has sunroof, alarm. Your basic loaded E-Class. Seats close to hovered in, clean metal, etc.
1999 Chev Suburban White with Neutral Leather interior 91,xxx PS,PB, A/C front and rear, 1500, LT, 4x4, Only Mobil One 5-30 used it's entire life, Garaged most of its life, towing kit with a tow point in front (just like a personal Hyster), All records since day one, and an AM-FM-CD Bose, alloy wheels, running boards, etc, - pretty much loaded
located 50 miles NW of Los Angeles
So the question....am I on base with the pricing? I need to sell something and my wife hates to see the Benz go. We replaced the Sub with a new Denali ($46,250 and 0-72) so the Sub is a better better bet to jettison.
Advise?? Maybe the Sub' is a better sell in the MidWest with winter approaching!?
Hello everyone, A few days ago I posted a message regarding the value of an '01 Accord which apparently was never answered. Although I thought I followed the suggested information for posting guidelines as far as the detail I gave, reading other posts I've noticed some people using the format exactly as given. I thought this may have been why it was ignored. So basically I'm asking for suggestions and/or guidance as to how or what I should post so someone could maybe express an idea about the car. Thanks again for any help and my apologies for any problems or issues. Chuck
I think your 'mistake' was to post around hurricane time in FL; Terry hasn't been able to answer as many posts as he usually does, and yours slipped through the cracks... During normal times, Terry can be found here at least twice a day, and he's been carrying this thread almost by himself for a coupla years now. So don't take it personally :-)
Other than reposting, the only thing you can do is to do an "advanced search" and find recent advice on similar vehicles.
I think an underlying part of understanding post 20851 is the fact that a higher mileage or older vehicle needs a hands on, touchy, kind of estimation of its value. Have you shopped it around to dealers for a cash buy price yet?
Higher mileage and older cars vary so much in condition that the best estimate of its value is with some one on one time in the drivers seat and a good visual inspection. You did not mention if it has ever been smoked in, that can dramatically reduce the value at some dealers.
You will definitely do better down retail road yourself with winter on the way. Buy some new factory floor mats or get the old ones super clean. Repost all information using the format that is available above the posting area. That way Terry can chime in with the best possible estimate of the value without seeing or driving the vehicle.
I posted this a couple of days ago and I read earlier that sometimes posts get missed. I am contemplating trading my 740IL or selling it out right. I know that either way it will be somewhat painfull. I'm looking at a 2003 Anniversary edition Volkswagen GTI with 13000 miles. Dealer wants 19,900. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Good morning Mike .. yep, I get a little side tracked, between the basking weaving classes and the Polka dancing I keep a little busy - so reposting is always a good thing.!
In the home of the Jaguars ... we have a 98 Bimmer 740iL, the color is right for Florida, miles are on the semi-tall side, it's got all the stuff including the side shades, rubber is semi newish with 8k, it needed new stoppers yesterday, service is up to date, clean Carsmack ...
If this dude is clean, no scratch and sniffs, no uh oh it's Maaco, seats look hovered in, no touch-ups, no K-Mart collisions, it drives/feels/looks like a 01 with 25k and we have super cold breeze .. then the dealer probably has the super tall $13's low/mid $14's in it, "maybe" he lost some big money on the Indy game and strolled into the low low low low low low low low $15's ~ maybe ..
$19,900.? ok, thats a great price if you live in Armenia, but if you live in the Jax zipcode then $17,5/$17,9 would be ALL the peso's and $18,5 would flat kill it, that's if you just couldn't live without it - it needs brakes and it has almost 90k.

2001 Accord LX Value by hawndah Oct 01, 2004 (2:39 pm) Hi everyone, I would appreciate an estimation of dealer trade or private sale value on this car: 2001 Accord LX 4 cyl. sedan,71,000 miles, dark green. The interior is good but it does have a few small scratches & stone chips on the front exterior. It's been well maintained & runs & drives very well. Tires are OK (40-45%). I recently had the transmission replaced under the Honda extended warranty for the 2000-2001 model years. I'm in Ky. near Louisville. Thanks for your assistance.
==============================
Better late than never ....
Not much of a description here. Were sitting on a 01 Honda Accord LX with 71k .. we have the no-sale green thing going, replacement tranny (kinda rare), rubber is a little shaky and we park this thing in Louisville .... if it looks and drives like a 25ker, then trade side in and around the super tall $7's low $8's, the miles aren't your friend here ..... down Retail Rd, superb detail, wonderful Ad $9,900 *asking* and it gets cut loose at the first $8,9/$9,5 .....
You did really good, Congrats.! .. Puerto Rico.? doesn't surprise me none, I've sold alot of vehicles down there and yours was the right one .. right now, the place seems to be Jamaica because of all of the hurricane damage to the vehicles, they love those Montero's .l.o.l..
yeah, and i think he wanted a fair price he should pay on the VW, too. You didn't give that, did you, terry??? it might be in there somewhere, i dunno.

They had problems with them in '01.. Ours was replaced at 18K miles.. and later we got the postcard saying the transmission warranty had been extended to 7 yrs/100K miles..
Not what you would expect, but as usual, Honda stepped up and made it right.. They didn't get that reputation for quality for nothing, and they like to protect it.
I have the 2K Buick Lesabre soft buick ride everything seems fine TTL came to 7,800.00.
It turns out the car was originally purchased/leased by the candian consulate.
I haven't gone to the dealer to see if they can give me any other insight or records. It does have one outstanding TSB so, I'll probably have that done at that time.

03 GTI Anniversary addition and we have 13k ...... now that I have 200 cups of coffee in me it's all becoming cleeeear .. if this GTI is clean to the bone, no repaints, no terrorists attacks, the seats have been hovered in and a perfect history, then the dealer probably has the mid to high $16's in it, maybe even the low low low low low $17's, these are hard to find .. I doubt any dealer will give one of these away.
Now, the 98 740iL is being traded .. it has almost 90k and it needs stuff, the dealer will probably drop the low to mid $12's in it, might stretch to the high $12's depending on the potential service, but I think this dude might be auction bound ..... so whats all that mean.?
You should be trading for your vehicle and "around" $6 grandish, maybe $7,0 plus the ttl ...
I think I got it right, or were you trading in a Dawoooo in on a Kia.?
Non turbo, automatic 22000 miles, silver monotone exterior, leather interior, appears to be in good condition. On a Subaru dealer lot for about a month in upstate NY. They are asking 19,888. Could this one be had for $17,000?
==============================
Ha.! and you thought you got missed ... this little dude is a 03 Subaru Baja, no turbo, auto, 22k, color is good anywhere, we got the leather guts and they are asking $19,8 ......
Here's the deal Lucille .. if it's a nice one, no Burger King kisses, no gang related interiors, deep sneakers and no repaints .. then the dealer might have the super tall $14's, low/mid $15's in it on a push ... I think the $17's should take it cuz' Subaru just dropped about 100 of these little punks at the auction in your area, off lease and most had miles in the 7/9/11k range .. 22k is a little on the high side, and so is that $19 figure ...

H-Town here we come .. This is your vehicle.? ... 4.0, auto with the 4drs, 2wd, power pack, we have a little hail damage, we have 18,000 Itsy Bitsy miles, color is no help in Texas, sneakers are done sneakin' and you say it's pretty nice except for a little meteorite damage ....
Depending on the dealer, trade side ... you lookin' at the ultra super tall $3's, low/mid $4's, "might" maybe "could" get a dealer to wander to the tall $4's, but I think that 2wd will hold it back ....
Me personally .. down Retail Rd it would go, finish any service, probably drop some round things in it, then I would send this dude to the detail gods, put in a superb 4/5 liner Ad in the H-Town paper, $7,495 *asking* and kick and scream at the first $6,5/$6,9 - but they would be an owner so fast that would have thought that Hurricane Jeanne passed through ... 18k saves it, but the 2WD will hurt it when the weather gets cold, ya Know what I mean.?
I have a 3 month old blue 2004 Audi S4 and have received a fairly nasty door ding on my rear door. The ding consists of a shallow dent about the size of a finger tip along with a scratch. I filled in the scratch with touch-up paint; however, the dent really annoys me. My question is what would hurt the value of the car more? Having the door ding fixed, which would require the entire door to be repainted, or just leave it? This really makes me sick for something like this to happen to a 50K+ car escpecially when it is still so new.
Too late now since you touched it up, but here is how we fix those kind of things. Step #1, have the paintless dent remover look at it and carefully tap the dent out. A very skilled one can remove dents like that and have them virtually invisible.
Step #2, have the local guy that fills the chip/scratch, not paint the whole panel fill it in with his airbrush tool. I have seen work done that was touched up and blended that only a trained eye would catch if they were looking in exactly the right spot. The only reason some of his work can even be spotted is due to the slight difference in the grain of the paint, if the scratch is small it is not noticeable. The touch up paint at this point kind of negates this approach now.
As to having it fixed, I would make sure it is fixed by the very best place you can find that guarantees the work forever if it requires a whole door repaint.
........ Dkuhajda brings up some good idea's .. as a rule, when you get these small dings that bother you, usually a trip to the Dent Wizard will alleviate 90% of them without the touch-up .. getting the whole door shot can cost you alot of money at trade time, airbrushes can work wonders - if needed .................

If I remember correctly (and I don't and I know nothing about this Norfolkia thing) but your from the Chicago/Milwaukee, right .?
This one has a few more miles than the one listed .l.o.l... .. a little fender action and I will just "assume" the Vin# is missing and the bolts will show turned, etc and (ouch) it has 50k ..... depending on where you live, this one is probably worth in and around the $15/$16 figure on trade, might/maybe see the $18's down Retail Rd .. stuff like tall miles, mismatched tires and body work is no help and might be looking for a buyer for a long time unless the "price is right", if this is a yankee vehicle, then the value will drop with the tempatures ...... what is he asking.?
PS: $28,900 ...?!? Yikes.! it's a very low mileage T/A, not a M5 .... $25,0 would be ALL the money ..

Good questions, good post ....
Dealers in your area are paying the strong $8's low low low low $9's for vehicles similar to yours ...
$11,9 isn't a crazy *asking* price, but again, it's an *asking* price ... $11,5.? fine, super, great if you can get it, but never let your ego get in the way of selling something .. it's a 7 year old vehicle with almost 100k, cared for and taken care of, but still: a 7 year old 100k vehicle .. if someone will drop $10,5/$10,9 then you need to grab it, thats still $2,000 more than you would see on a trade - anytime your not getting calls on an item they'res a reason for it ....
The Benz: your always going to get calls on em' .. kids, maybe a few college guys pretending their corporate wheelers and dealers, people going through the mid-life crisis, but your looking for the buyer .. $5,900/$6,500 and give them a kiss AND the title ~ it's 11 year old 145,000 mile vehicle, not a 11 year old Rolex ... just like my Great Grand Daddy used to say: you can be a Lion and you can be a Tiger ~ but never be a Pig ..........................
The plan was to buy a (probably new) minivan early next year (when it is *really* needed), but: I noticed this 2000 Villager advertized by a local Minneapolis VW dealer. Base; dark red/maroon; high miles (87k); usual power stuff, cruise, tape/no CD. Interior, exterior and engine compartment look clean. Drives fine, but there is a slight wobble in the steering wheel. The dealer has no problem taking it to my mechanic for an inspection. Obviously, sold with no warranty.
With the news of the 05 Ody prices pushing 35k, the thought of buying used looks more and more appealing.
What is amazing.. is my wife noticed a problem with it, without it actually dropping out of the car at 70 MPH. It may be the first time she has caught on to a mechanical problem before the car actually died.

Brembo brakes are nice to have, especially if you live in a school zone ... I have know idea what you paid for the other stuff, but it means -0- to a dealer and not to many "real" buyers care to pay the extra $$ for it - can we spell STOCK.? ... take as much of the stuff off and go Ebay with it ....
If it's a nice clean "stock" SI, then trade side, in and around the super high $10's low low $11's, might "could" see a dealer wander up towards the $12 figure if you take off all that hinky Banzai business ..... the miles will save this one, but the other stuff has the resale of 3 day old cabbage ............
let me know.!
Terry.
Thanks Terry, I will see what I can fetch for it from a local sale. There has to be a kid that desperatley wants an Si, and can not afford the $17K dealers charge.

Help! I just financed a Toyota Corolla 2003 S about a month ago. I thought I liked the color, but after taking it home....I don't knoe whether or not I like it. I took out a loan to finance the car. Is there a way to trade it in without getting losing completely too much money!! Any advice you have would be great!! HELP!!
In short, no. Long answer is sure, you could, but you'll take a bath on the trade value - probably about a $3-6k difference in your purchase price. If that's worth it to you, and you have the cash, go for it. Not a move I'd make, but it's your money. If you don't have that kind of cashola, there's no way you'll roll that much negative equity into another loan.
That being said, if you put a huge chunk down, you may have some equity, and all you'd do is lose several thousand dollars in 30 days - not smart money management.
I think I'd be looking at some pinstripes, window tint, or custom wheels to make me feel better about the color...
If you had said a week ago, you might have been able to trade for a different color with the dealer if they hadn't titled it yet, but at a month you're out of luck. Drift basically said it all.
If after reading that you still want to go ahead, post a detailed description of the car so Terry can tell you just how bad the news is.

Its an '03 that you bought a month ago? Was it used? Who knows, maybe you got a fantastic deal and will only be a couple grand upside-down. But, if its really that bad and you can't live with it and you are willing to take a big bath on it, I suggest painting the darned thing. It would kill the resale, but if its between losing $4K now or $1500 now for a paint job and maybe $1500 6 years from now come resale time, well, the math says it all, right?

$3,900 *asking* and $2,9/$3,5 gets a new owner ....
let me know ...
<snip>
Thanks again for the help,
Jason
Oh, and the listing is here, if you're interested. Already closed, so it should be OK.
i'd just be curious to hear from you when the buyer gets the car and says everything is a-ok. at this point i'd be worried about an email with "hey! i thought i had automatic nose hair clippers in the glovebox!" Not that it matters now, but its just a hassle. Oh, and did you hear the one about the fake cashiers checks coming from overseas?

As for unexpected surprises on delivery, that does worry me a bit. I try to be super detailed on describing any flaws, and so far the folks I've sold stuff to have been pretty happy with the condition.

I'm not sure if the market is that soft - particularly for big SUV's right now, or the lot is merely better for the bottom feeders of the world

Mike
However, I thought the ad was very professional and addressed all of the usual things that make EBay buyers apprehensive (prior owners, etc.).
A few days ago I posted a message regarding the value of an '01 Accord which apparently was never answered.
Chuck
Other than reposting, the only thing you can do is to do an "advanced search" and find recent advice on similar vehicles.
Good luck,
-Mathias
Thanks
Higher mileage and older cars vary so much in condition that the best estimate of its value is with some one on one time in the drivers seat and a good visual inspection. You did not mention if it has ever been smoked in, that can dramatically reduce the value at some dealers.
You will definitely do better down retail road yourself with winter on the way. Buy some new factory floor mats or get the old ones super clean. Repost all information using the format that is available above the posting area. That way Terry can chime in with the best possible estimate of the value without seeing or driving the vehicle.

**I'm looking at a 2003 Anniversary edition Volkswagen GTI with 13000 miles.** ....... nothing like looking at Nikes and Florshiems at the same time .....................

Hi everyone,
I would appreciate an estimation of dealer trade or private sale value on this car:
2001 Accord LX 4 cyl. sedan,71,000 miles, dark green.
==============================
Terry.
Thanks for the update,
Terry.

It turns out the car was originally purchased/leased by the candian consulate.

Anyway .. let me know what happens.!
Terry.

Ha.! and you thought you got missed ... this little dude is a 03 Subaru Baja, no turbo, auto, 22k, color is good anywhere, we got the leather guts and they are asking $19,8 ......
22k is a little on the high side, and so is that $19 figure ...
let me know, got it.!

As usual, let me know ...!!
Terry.

Terry.

That being said, if you put a huge chunk down, you may have some equity, and all you'd do is lose several thousand dollars in 30 days - not smart money management.
I think I'd be looking at some pinstripes, window tint, or custom wheels to make me feel better about the color...
If after reading that you still want to go ahead, post a detailed description of the car so Terry can tell you just how bad the news is.
