Yep, got backed into in a parking lot. I'm getting it back today, so we'll see how good they are.

And Bill, you know I like the Euro (esp. German) cars, too. The I30 is the wife's, but it's perfect for her. Not very exciting to drive, but very nice inside and it has a great stereo.

I take back what I said about McDonald's body shop. They were a day past-due (the part that irritated me), but they did a great job, and worked directly with State Farm's estimate (didn't charge anything extra).

I always read about the resale of a car being killed if certain options are not included..now would there be certain options that somebody would get that would actually hurt the resale of a car(or not get the money back from it?)
Also..you guys always mention that cars with "handshakers" will hurt a car..but is there some cars that get hurt by having a automatic?(i.e..high performance sport cars)Thanks!

A 2000, with all the stuff, and being a EX with little or no miles -- this little puppy ( unless its purple ) is going to do a strong $16,500/$17,000....

........There is a lot of truth to what you are saying.

As a rule, customers will " buy what they "assume" they like" vs "buying what they like" ...
There is a lot of 'cross' type vehicles. That have the same everything except for some badging and a little different style carpet or headlamps, etc .. --- that's why there's 2nd generation Chevy buyers or 3rd generation Pontiac buyers etc..there is a big difference between assuming the difference and knowing the difference.....

The miles don't help much here and most that desire this type of vehicle, really prefer the toy's ( wheels..?)like the slider and leather...and the auto...handshakers hurt these vehicles bad.... --- In Chi-town your probably a lot closer to the $12,000/$12,500 range..

I'm sure this doesn't help....l..o..l.. ( Bill likes me being the bad guy..) but the asking price is a good starter..

Well, we went and looked at a truck tonight. It belongs to a friend of mine and she said it was a good truck. I think it took us 5 minutes to realize that it certainly wasn't worth what she wanted. Here's the specs.......1984 Ford F-150 6-cyl, reg cab, 4WD, 4-speed manual trans, I have no idea how many miles, and it had a cap. Body was ok, interior ok. Engine......well, um, I have never seen that many leaks in my life. Anyway, she wants $2,000 for it. Sigh, back to the drawing board.

......... These are nice vehicles, and the miles can "help or hurt" a SUV, depending on where you live..

The Blazer's , like all the rest right now are a little "soft" --- and they also have to compete with the new body style..

Sooo, based on the original MSRP I'm going to "assume" it's a 4x4, and of course being a LT, help's a ton..I'm going to pretend the vehicle is in Georgia...you are looking to be in or around the $14,000 ish figure..if it's a clean one..

I am looking to trade a 1995 Ranger XLT Super Cab. 58,000 miles. Here are the specs:
4cyl., 2WD, manual trans., cruise, A/C, CD changer, sliding rear window, bed liner, tastefully oversized tires (less than a year old), chrome rims.

Maintence has been good: oil change every 3K (do it myself), recently had the A/C, door switches, belts replaced.

The only bad issue is that the paint is in terrible shape... It will need to be repainted (light green) before it is resold, and there is a small dent on the side of the bed. Otherwise, it is in good shape.

KBB puts it at $4,100 and Edmunds puts it at $4,500. If I get 4K I would be satisfied.
Is this resonable? I live in Orlando, FL.

Umm,

You're not gonna like me....

If the paint is shot.... I'm thinking more like $2,000-2,500. Totally Repainted it's still $1K or so under typical market on them as its' a repaint.

$4,000-4,500 is closer to what a nice one is worth. If the paint's faded... have you tried having it heavily buffed? Or is it bad love bug damage on the front? or?

I also live in Orlando... I know what those stupid bugs do to paint.

Bill, I hope you are unloading those SC430 fast, because I just saw the new generation of the SL500. Let me just say this, the SC430 will not be a match for it, other than its going to be cheaper. Of course the new SL500 has the retractable "glass" roof into the trunk, but, it doesn't have the "hump" back look for the SC430. Granted, trunk space is compromise. Too bad this car is going to be at least 70K over what my budget allows.

Glad I am not the only one that thinks the SC430 is ugly also. Only 7 deposits? Trust me, I stood 3 feet away from that car(the security people prevented me from getting closer). Metallic artic blue. White leather interior with teal trim. Its sleek, low and SEXY with a capital S. If my fairy god mother appeared in front of me at that time and asked me which car I want, that's the one.

....... Well she has the right color and it has no miles on it, plus it has all the toys's...

There is a couple of options for her ...since she is with Chrysler right now, and they would like to see the vehicle -gone- instead of the auction routine in the dead of winter.

Call the folks and get the pay-off..then try to negotiate the final number with a "supervisor" ... not the person that answers in the dept. As a rule - Chrysler, is pretty easy to work with and will "negotiate" a better number..

Since the vehicle is a clean, low mile vehicle, the 2WD in the summer shouldn't be hard to sell.... --- So, you know the routine, get it detailed, make it look like a diamond, put it in the largest print paper in your area with a - 4/5 liner ad, the small stuff doesn't work - have the service stuff handy and try to retail it if you can .. right now, it's worth about $10,000 on the "real world side" ( it was a good guess by Bill, while he was reading his Benz brochures..l..o..l.. ) my NADA book is not in front of me, but I'm gonna guess it's a $13,000 ish retail vehicle ......So start it up, and see what happens..

Gee, I thought I was alone in thinking this car looked "hideous". I don't know what it is, the japanese car manufacturers make fine cars with some good engineering & excellent quality control but their styling tends to be awful quirky. Even on fine cars such as the Acura CL or TL, I hate the front & rear styling, same with the Tundra, those awful looking grills. Oh well to each their own I guess.

Thinking about an Acura Integra GSR (99 or 00). What's the real world value for this car, figure average miles and decent color and condition. Is there a difference between the 2 or 4 door models? Does anyone think that values will weaken with the new RSX coming out soon?

Any other fun commuter car ideas are also appreciated

The RL's have some trunk money..and some other stuff --- But, between you/ me and the lampost, I think you should Retail this little darlin'...because your not going to like the numbers..

At the auctions right now, you are lookin' at a $29,500 vehicle, it could stretch to $30,000 and a few cent's more, depending on the day, barometric pressures, humididty's and junk like that...these are great vehicles/ better bought used...

I have posted this question before. I have a 1999 Ford Explorer sport 2WD, loaded, white, 41,000 miles located in MI.

This vehicle was recently involved in a pretty bad accident with the damage being in the front end and underneath (suspension). I am not sure if the frame is bent or not. My insurance company just called and said it was fixable with an estimate of 7K plus.

I am wondering if there are any guidelines as to what it takes to have a vehicle totaled? A certain percentage of it's wholesale value or something. The lady from the insurance company told me a 1999 Explorer was worth 20K (LOL). Can I request genuine replacement parts or do anything else to have this baby totaled?

....... First of all, if they will total it..and the money is right, go that route...

But if they want to spend $7K on a re-build, let them knock themselves out--- only if, they use replacement parts....Then sell it or trade it, and say goodbye...

I hope you're OK. Push to get it totalled IMO.

Threaten to sue if you have to. $20,000? I'd tell her that its' sold. Only 99 Explorer worth that, is maybe a Limited AWD V8 with 20K on the clock. And that's retail.

Was it your fault? If not, shoot for diminshed value. go for $2,000.

You want that truck totalled if at all possible.

i went to the local chrysler store here in NE CT (Gomes chrysler) to find out more about the 99 cherokee sports. They all have around 40k miles! And they want 16.9! I'm in shock....incredulous...I say...you know, that's ALOT of money...wholesale is only ...with those miles...maybe 11k...he says...i'm not dealing wholesale..:) i start getting this smirk on my face...despite myself...."so, then, what's the difference between wholesale and retail?" i ask. He says, about 3000. Wow, i say, you paid alot for these jeeps, did you get them at auction? No, we bought them directly from enterprise. Well, they sell them at auction, No, we bought them from them,. got a special deal.

Yeah, special for enterprise!....two g's over wholesale!!@ LOL

Rule of thumb is usually 75% or greater of its retail value in damage to declare a total. Didn't the oil pan crack and the engine sieze as a result of that undercarriage damage? I was not sure if you forgot to mention that.

Hi guys it's Leland again. Well I heard from the Ford dealer this morning thats supposed to be doing the repairs on my truck. He told me the estimate was 8K. Then he started going over the list of repairs - the first one that came out of his mouth was to pull and square the frame. I don't want to drive this truck again after it's had a bent frame. Is there any defense I have on this matter?

The Lexus store next to my house in Broward County is running this "special"(Lexus of Pembroke Pines)- Any 2001 IS300, ES300 or RX300 with leather, sunroof and CD for $399 Down(plus 1st payment, tax, tag and "fees" for $399 a month, for 60 MONTHS! And only 10K miles per year. What would my lease payment be on one of these "select" RX300's if I put $1500 down, and wanted 15K miles per year for a 36 month lease. I knew this would be right down your alley. Thanks.

UGH! It's $2500 down on an IS300 for 12K/year/39 months!

RX...Figure a .00275 or so factor and a 62% or so residual at 15K/year.

I'll see if I can't get the specifics for you. Term? Miles/year? Navi or Non Navi?

My wife and I are interested in buying a 2002 Acura TL. We have a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT that is fully paid. It has 61k miles, is green, and is in excellent consition. It has new tires that have probably 3000 miles on them (Michelins). It just got a new battery, new brakes, and new hoses, and fan belt. Interior has normal wear and tear, and the exterior is in excellent condition.
We live in New Orleans. They only have one Acura dealer in the city and the next closest is Baton Rouge. They offered 29,301 on a 2002 TL, and they would not budge at all. They only offered 8,000 on a trade-in. We are putting the Explorer in the classifieds today. What is a fair trade-in value for our vehicle, and what is a fair price for the TL. I might try Houston since they have three Acura dealers, and I can fly over there and grab it for 99$ on Southwest (only a 40 minute flight and a five hour drive.)

But I dont follow the New Acura market too closely.

I'd read and scroll up in the Acura TL Shopping topic if'n I were you and see if anyone's bought in New Orleans.

As far as The Explorer... I assume it's a standard 4-Door 2WD... correct?

Unless it's had previous body repairs or is a 5-speed or something.. I think $9K is closer to the money, but they have gone very very soft in the marketplace lately.

I was on another board and someone asked what the difference was between the value of a Sentra with a manual and a Sentra with an automatic.

This got me to thinking that these next questions would be right up your alley.

In general, how much does a non-performance vehicle having a manual transmission cost in terms of resale value?

Are some cars with a manual transmission worth more than the same car with an automatic?

Read through the archives of this topic, as this has been addressed several times in the past already. Remember that an automatic transmission is usually about a $1k option on this type of vehicle, so you need to figure accordingly, something that most people forget when comparing like values.

As far as the Montero, if CU is correct.....good luck if you have one of these pigs on the front line!

Explorer....$8000 is all the cash for that 4x2 in the Northeast. All things considered.

I have a dent in the hood from a shopping cart that ocurred one month ago. How much of hit will I take if I sell with the dent? Is it worth repairing?

E-Clips. tuff color. tuff car. Good miles though. Anything over $6k (real Connecticut money) wholesale is a Hail Mary.

1990 Acura- The car is 11 years old and not a candidate for the Peterson Museum so a little dent can be considered "normal wear and tear" in a vehicle of this vintage. The average buyer is more interested in reliability than vanity in this price range so dont sweat it. Wholesale (asuming middle of the road LS) is $1600, private retail could be in the $3k ballpark.

I think you could do SO much better on that car if you sold it on your own. AWD turbo is a big deal with a select group of buyers and they will pay for it, especially with those miles. Plaster it all over the net, I think you'll find out-of-staters calling you on that one.

For an example, I just searched 3 big car websites for anything within 100 miles of me (jersey). Only came up with 1 '95 GSX. Its got 82,745 miles on it. Its at a dealer (a reasonable dealer that I happen to know of). They want $11,500 on it. That's almost double that $6K trade-in price AND its got almost 30K more miles.

I think that's just that type of car that you really can't find a "book value" on.
