Not an expert but I do read quite a bit :)

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac was recently awarded by NHTSA the worst rating in testing for rollover potential.

If I remember right, the article was on the USA Today web page. May want to do a google search for it....

    Driftrace,

    How you arrived at $16K??

    That figure seems really low!
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
    don't buy vehicles, people do.

The market is flooded with Explorers and their derivatives. They're horribly "under book" by $3-5k, except when a dealer advertises them.

All of the equipment you listed, except for leather and the sunroof, is STANDARD on an XLT.

They may ASK, $20k for it, but like you said, you can get a NEW onw for $20k out the door. Real money at auction is probably closer to $14,500-15,000, actually selling (not asking) for $16,500-17,000.

How can anyone justify asking $18-20k for a vehicle that's already titled and depreciated, when a new one is only $20k after incentives?

And again, say it with me....BOOKS don't buy vehicles, people do.

    Thanks for the advice, Driftracer!

I believe the extended cage and bed cover are optional as well.

So, where does one find cars under the book?

I also have another question to you or anyone else:

Why are most car wholesellers on Ebay are from East Cost (PA, NJ, NY, FL, OH) or Texas. I can't seem to find them here in California.

It also seems California commands a premium - is it supply and demand?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Always compare apples to apples .. there is a big difference between a base XLS and a loaded-up XLT, probably to the tune of $3,000+ or more ....

In this case, the seller probably was offered in and around the mid/tall $15's on trade, so like any good American he has decided to go down Retail Rd and he's *asking* $19,0+ because of all of the options and those tiny miles, which is fine .. but a fair price for both would be around the $18ish figure .... price a new one out, then buy the one "You" like .......................... :)

are the biggest car selling areas, thereby, the largest used car markets.

Th extended bed thingy and bed cover are great options if you're selling privately, use them to build value, but when looking at base numbers in a book, they don't count for much.

"So, where does one find cars under book"?

I don't really know what you're asking here. Look at any domestic car or SUV, save for some high-line stuff like Escalades and Denalis - they're all "under book".

Oh, and Hyundai and Kia - thay're HALF of book.

Looks like my better half is getting tired of hauling around 2 small kids in her Grand Prix, so its time for a minivan.

I'm going to sell the car myself, so I'm looking for a good newspaper listing price and a cut it loose from the herd price.

    Selling:

      Milwaukee metro area

    2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

    4 door, silver exterior

    56k miles

    sunroof

    cloth seats

auto climate control, power this and that, etc

    good condition inside and out

    no accidents, no dings

    all regular maintenance to date

    newer tires and brakes

extended warranty good for about 9 more months ......

-- Your selling this down Retail Rd, right.? if so, then $8,900 *asking* and cut and run at the first $7,9/$8,5 .....

I'm looking for a good value on a used minivan. The following one looked pretty decent to me. What range could I expect to pay for something like this:

      2003 Ford Windstar SE

    29,000 miles

    blue exterior

    rear heat and air

    quad seats

    keyless entry

all the usual power accessories for the trim level

    tires are original

body has one ding, but in otherwise good shape

    interior is clean

      Thanks for the help

-- Your welcome ....... dealer might have the tall $10's low/mid $11's in it, I would think the $13ish figure would get it home .... what are they asking.?

                                      Terry.

So, where does one find cars under the book?

driftracer gave some good advice, but as a total non-professional, here's my perspective: It takes some legwork! Go out to the lots and see what vehicles seem to be more common than others. For example, in my area, used Chrysler Sebrings are a dime a dozen (<--not an actual retail figure).

Now, book value on a 2003 Sebring might be $16K, but if I know dealerships are tripping over them on the lots, I doubt a) I'll see them marked at $16K by any wise dealer, and b) that I'll offer anywhere close to that.

Shop around - take a few days and trawl the lots, then if an "under book" vehicle strikes you as something you'd like, you can make a deal.

    ........ Knoxville, it's a cute little town ....

Soooo, what do we have here.? trade.. retail.?

Hmm ... smells like, looks like, feels like a 01 530i .. auto, 42k, good color anywhere, both packages, blinders, service and rubber is ok .... IF ~ we don't have any paint by numbers, no curb burners, no gang related projects in the interior - just a nice/clean respected Bimmer ... then trade side, depending on the dealer, in and around the mid/tall $22's, might maybe find a dealer to wobble towards the $23ish figure if it's super/ultra nice and it needs Zipola ...... not a bad driver for Retail Rd, $26,900 *asking* and $25,5/$26,5 (depending on the weather) gets a new owner .... let me know which way the wind blows ............................ :)

    So, Terry.

Exactly how many apples are we taking about when you say 18ish - mid, low, or high?

And would it be unresonable (not fair to the seller) to go below 18?
  • insaneinsane Member Posts: 16
The title pretty much sums it up.

In NY and PA, they are a dime a dozen, but I can seem to find them here in LA.

    Anyone know of any?

    Thanks in advance.

these advertised "auctions" or "public auctions" here in the Philly area are no more than dumping grounds for junk. Don't confuse these advertising gimmicks for moving 150,000 mile pieces of junk for a real auction like Manheim.

Hi, Terrry - I've been looking for a used car with "luxury" features that will last for a long time w/o major trouble. (I know, aren't we all?)

Here's an interesting one, albiet older than I've considered.

    Dallas, Texas

    1997 Lexus ES300

    4 door sedan

    V6 Auto w/overdrive, 3 liter

    FWD

    51.6 k miles

    Sage exterior/ tan leather interior

Options (I think a lot of these are standard on this model): Power everything, sunroof, keyless entry, 6-CD changer in glovebox, alloys

Excellent condition in and out, appearance-wise. Tires look to be a year old - plenty of tread left.

It has maintenance records starting about 2000; none before that. The biggie was the transmission, replaced 2 years ago (is that good or bad news?) Consistent oil changes and looks to be a picky owner - made them fix rattles and squeaks, etc., while under warranty. I don't see evidence of a wreck (but I'm not exactly an eagle-eye about such things)

    VIN JT8BF22G9V0070311

The price started at $15.9 and now is $13..7

    What do you think?

Thanks, Terry and anyone else who wants to play.

Parked at the local Infiniti dealer in northern NJ.

2004 TL 6 speed, nav (I would rather buy a map though), silver with black insides, 10k miles.

    VIN: 19UUA65544A012594

At least it looks pretty good in the pictures....haven't had a chance to mosey the 4 miles from home to take a lookee-see.

They're advertising at 28,995. My guess is they own it in the high 25's low 26's?, and given the do-it yourself tranny and the time of year would cut it loose high 27's? I really wasn't looking for a car yet, but this would be alot of vehicle for the money.

    Thx.

I was wondering why everyone was turning to Terry for advice on their trade in value, so I checked out his profile. Then I clicked on drifter racer’s profile because I noticed him answering questions to my post on multiple boards.

Man...you have to see their bios - impressive to say the least.

It's really admirable of them to take time out to help the newbie and little guys on this message board.

Thanks, and pardon me if I left anyone else out.

    Terry,

Just getting back with you regarding my results from your valuation back in November (post 22977)...you had advised to advertise it for around 13,9 and look to settle between 12,9 and 13,5. I put the ad in for 13,999 and ended up getting all of it from the first looker! She offered 12,9 initially, I replied that I thought the car was fairly priced at 13,9 and was willing to wait for better offers...she called back the next day and paid my asking price.

Appreciate your help, and have a great Christmas!

Terry (as you seem to be the pro) or anyone:

I am looking at trading / selling privately this vehicle and feel like I am only seeing the wholesale values for it. Perhaps I am out of whack with my expectations?

    Colorado Springs (Denver Metro)

    01 A4 1.8T Quattro Sedan

    42xxx miles

    Black w/Grey Leatherette

    Options:

    Bose Sound system

    CD Changer

Cold Weather package (Heated seats, etc)

    Autodimming mirrors

    Homelink

    Power moonroof

    Xenon headlights

    Condition:

Tires: < 10,000 miles Brakes: at least 25,000 miles left Maintenance: Dealer serviced (completely) for all changes and all records retained. Exterior: Minor cart scratches on rear bumper, curb scrape on one wheel Interior: Excellent. No tears, no kids, no food, no smoking. No accidents or body work has been done on this vehicle. In regards to quotes, I am getting around $12K quoted for the first numbers from a couple of dealers (one Subaru, another a buying service). Listings retail in the area seem to be running north of 17K for similar miles/condition/equipment. Does it seem reasonable that I should be able to get 14.5 - 15K out of this? Thanks for any and all help!

    Hi Terry.

Debating whether to sell or trade-in the following:

2000 VW Jetta GLX VR6 with 32,500 miles in Northern California (95051). It's silver color with silver leather interior and automatic transmission. Car is in very good condition with all the options of GLX: premium sound (no disc changer though), heated seats with memory, moonroof, dual front and front side air bags, ABS, climate control.

Any ideas what I might expect at trade-in vs private sale? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

....... It depends on the seller and what all those options and the super low miles are worth to you ... hi-milers are a dime a dozen on the Left Coast, clean low milers are kinda hard to find considering you guys will drive 60 miles just to get a fresh Expresso ........... :)

...... Speaking of low miles (part 2) ...

In the land of Aaarnold .. we have a 00 Jetta GLX VR6 with 33k, right color for anywhere, auto, bun warmers, slider, tunes, abs, etc ... low miles are great, but if they are "cared for" low miles: no smoke, no drive by's, no K-mart collisions, no I let my nephew wash my car with a Brillo pad, no curb burners, no axe murders in the interior, deep sneakers and serviced .. then trade side, in and around the super tall 8's, low/mid $9's ..... down the windy path to Retail Rd: a great detail, a wonderful Ad in the biggest paper in the area, $12,900 *asking* and slap that dude south for the first $11,9/$12,5 - the VR6, auto and the low miles saves this one ........ let me know how it goes .... :)

Anyway .... 03 Bimmer 530i, auto , right color, we got some packages, blinders and the miles are a tinge on the high side, but then again, it is Kalifurnia .... no runs- no hits- no errors ... trade side, in and around the low to mid $31ish figure, might maybe "could" get a dealer to drop the low low $32ish figure in it -if- it's puurfect, glows in the dark and needs -0- ...... down Retail Rd, $36,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $35,0/$36,5 .........

                     Let me know.!

    Hey Terry,

I just got back from looking at the '93 Legend with 75k miles...well, the car drove, and the interior looked like 175k miles. Brakes were good, but suspension and transmission felt very sloppy. The exterior wasn't bad. The search continues. It's the search that's the fun part anyway. :-)

Wondering if you can give some advice for my '95 Eddie Bauer Explorer with snowballing problems? I am in DC and can't get passed inspection due to ABS light and Check Engine light they say indicates an exhaust leak. My mechanic said I would probably need two new computers to address these issues but said nothing of an exhaust leak... To complicate things, the transmission has started to go out and will need replacement. Mileage= 140, 000. Appearance wise, it is in fair condition (scratch here or there to the body with some worn and torn leather inside). The question is whether or not to do all the repairs myself, update safety inspection and registration, then sell it or attempt to find a buyer who is able to take on the repairs? Thanks for any help you can give. Also, inspection report today said the brake inspection failed.

I don't know about "help"; it's more a question of attitude. As in, be glad all this stuff happened at once, rather than piecemeal. If it were my car, I'd make a list of all the stuff that "needs fixed", to use the vernacular, and see if the sum total exceeds the actual cash value... which is going to be, I'm just guessing, a little over $3 on this thing, if it's *all* fixed.

Three years ago, I was in this position with my then 10-year-old A'star (Coincidence? I think not). I got nickled and dimed with this van -- which I otherwise really liked -- and then the tranny went south on it.. turned out all it really needed was a quart of fluid, but I saw the writing on the wall, serviced the transmission and dumped it... for $950. It was gone in 5 hours. Ran into the buyer a half year later, and the van had become immobilized by some sort of a fuel injection problem. Sometimes it's better to cut and run.

    Hi Terry,

I want to purchase a red Honda S2000 with 9000 miles from a private party in St. Louis, Missouri. It has the rear spoiler and the underbody spoilers, excellent condition. Plastic rear window a little foggy, though. Can you please tell me what would be a fair price to pay for this car? Thank you.

I am definitely leaning in that direction! Would you happen to know the repurcussions of selling with an expired inspection and expired registration? DC charges $20/month for overdue inspection.

    Terry,

I am interested in purchasing a new car to drive back and forth to work everyday and rack up the mileage. I am looking for the most inexpensive cars I can find to serve this purpose. I thought about the Hyundai Accent or Ford Focus, or something along those lines. Any advice? Thank you.

    Terry,

Sorry for the lack of information on my potential trade in.

    To sum up

    1997 Chevrolet Suburban

    2 WD,5.7 engine, LT equipment

Leather, rear air, cd, tow package, cruise

Aux Gas Tank, Power windows, locks

    Interior in good condition

    Runs strong,Minor dings and scratches

    Needs tires

    170,000 THANKS

        =============================

In Hotlanta ... we have a 97 Burb 2wd, 5.7 LT, leather, rear breeze, double tanks, power stuff, 170 klicks and you can see the air in the tires ......

IF ~ we have freezin' cooold air, runs ultra strong, no oil ponds, no Jack the Ripper interior, no paint by numbers, no meteorite hits, no Popeyes chicken in the rear seats, drives/looks/feels like a 00 with 75k .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $3's, maybe the low low $4's on a good day, maybe ....... Nice Burbs still do some money, even with the miles, hard to break those 5.7's -- me personally (only if it's really nice) I would drop some tires in it, finish any service, give it a "come to Jesus" detail, big fat 4/5 liner Ad in the "Lanta" paper, $7,900 *asking* and let someone abuse me for $6/$6,9 ........ let me know.!

........ St Louie ? ..... winter should be hitting just about: ................ Now.!

That means most dealers will be lookin' to drop maybe the low/mid $17's, could get "brave like bull" and drop the low low low low $18's into that nice low miler in your area - tax savings on the difference on MO, right.? .. on a private sale, a fair price for both.? $20ish ......... whats he asking.?

As far as your other question -- no Hyundies, no Kia's, no Diewooo's ....
