I kept my mouth shut, he's still pretty pissed. I had to keep from giggling.........some people have such high expectations at trade in time.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,281
Next thing you know he'll be bragging about how he bought an Impala for only $2000 over invoice...

    Terry,

How much do you think this one Acura dealer has in this car?

'04 Acura TSX 6 speed with NAVI

    Red with beige leather

    Chicago area

    22K miles

Aptional body kit + fog lights + MP3 player.

    TIA

I think I may be cured from the BMW sickness... :)
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
I think he's trying to buy a Silverado or Tahoe, not sure. He'll be bragging that he got $9k for his truck and paid $5k back of invoice for his new sled.......so who knows what the truth will actually be. He's just one of those types that has to better everyone.......I don't care, I just laugh.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
I can see the $5k back of invoice...makes you wonder, though, when they tell you their payments are $900 and you do the math...
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
I do know that he owes around $9k-$10k on the truck at 19.9% APR.......ain't no way he's gonna get $5k back of invoice on a new ride. Not unless the dealer is blind and thinks his truck only had 50k on it........ya know, forgets about the 1 in front of the 50k.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
..if lenders ought not to be required to take the car in lieu of payments... you know, do the repo, but not be able to ask any more money after that.

It won't work, because the condition of the car makes a big difference, but I think it would be good for everyone if banks would only loan enough money to cover the actual value of the car.

    Perish the thought...

and to think that most automotive value guides have "loan" value - nobody ever pays attention to THAT...
  • mtomeo1mtomeo1 Member Posts: 6
kyfdx & corvette, thanks for the replies.

    Yes, $29k: $432/mo * 20mo = $8640 - MSRP $38k = you guessed it, $29k ;-p

I have looked into the lease assumption and aside from the $500 transfer fee the "buyer" would have to qualify through BMW Financial. Probably no different than any other company.

Unless some dealer makes me an offer I can't refuse, I'll wait a year and play the same game next December. The same incentives will be there and I'll only have 4 paymwents to cover (assuming I stay under my mileage). Not so bad, except that we need to lower our monthly obligations now, not one year from now...that's life...thanks again!

    #23582 of 23680 audi A4 trade-in value by lngtonge18 Dec 08, 2004 (8:20 pm)

My parents are trying to trade in a 2001 A4 1.8t FrontTrak with 56k. It's black with gray cloth, 5 speed, sport suspension package, 16" alloys, power sunroof, homelink, auto dimming rear and side view mirrors, CD player. Interior and exterior is in good shape with only some scratches on the rear bumper. Car was dealer maintained until 50k. They live in West Palm Beach, Florida (33458).

So far, they have been offered what I feel are ridiculously low trade in values. The Acura dealer started at 8k and then went up to 10k but said they wouldn't go any higher. The Infiniti dealer basically said they didn't want to insult him with their offer but stated they would only offer him $7500. The salesman went on to explain why they were offering such a low value by stating the rear passenger door appears to be repainted because of tape marks and there are paint blemishes on the roof near the drain rail. This car was bought new by my parents and stays in a garage. It was never wrecked in that door and the remark about the roof just floors me because I've never seen a dealer look at the roof that closely. To be honest, I'm quite baffled. When they bought their Audi, the A4 had one of the highest resale values. Have values really tanked that bad on the A4? I know the cloth hurts the value some, but otherwise, it has a good mix of options. What is the best trade value they can expect on their car? My brother is also worried since he owns a similar car (his 01 1.8t has quattro, xenon, 17" alloy, and Leatherette) and is wondering whether he should get rid of his car before his mileage gets too high (he has 20k now). Does he have cause to be worried or are these 2 dealers just a fluke?

           ==============================

Wholly Molly, man is that bright, where's my sunglasses.? .. how did you get it to go so "bold".? it's kinda like a bad Xmas card .l.o.l....

Anyhow ..... have they taken you to the Palm Beach Polo Club for lunch yet.?

We have an 01 A4 1.8T - no Quattro, it's cloth, it's a meat clever, it's black and it's in sunny and warm Florida .. so where's the good stuff.?

The paint stuff.? I can't say because I can't see it .. maybe transport problems when new, perhaps your Dad bumped into the neighbors car at the track, maybe Mom scratched the side at the Bingo game .. best way to find out, have someone run an Elco over it, you'll know in about 3 seconds ...

                   What kills this puppy is the handshaker and the color, but the miles save it .. if you can get a dealer to drop $10,0 big ones into it (Real Money) then you need to "be there", cuz' thats the whole Coma Se' Yama - and the bag of chips .... actually this would be a pretty nice vehicle down Retail Rd: a visit to the Dukes of Detail, a great 4/5 liner Ad in the paper, all the service records falling out of the dash, $13,900 *asking* and away it goes for the first $12,5/$13,5 ... remember, your trying to sell a car, not trying to convince a jury - so park the ego and grab the cash ....................... ;^}

By the way, how much did you think this pup was worth, it's 5 years old .. if it was a kid, it would be in Kindergarten by now .... :)

Let me know how it goes.!

    Terry,

I'm going to the Manheim auction outside of Philly this Friday looking for a 2004 Mazda 6. KBB and Edmunds are showing dealer trade values of between $12-13K for a 6i 4 cyl. with auto. and $14-15K for the 6s V6 with auto. I'm figuring with 15-20k miles, maybe up to 25k. I'm not expecting too many base 6 cyl. to be available, but maybe I'll get lucky. Do these prices sound about right? Can I expect the auction prices to be close to the dealer trade values? I'm sure we'll have the latest copy of Galves on hand.

    Thanks

    Hey Terry,

Let me know what you think of this one on Autotrader: http://tinyurl.com/5vges

    Canton Ohio (Akron area)

    1993 Acura Legend LS

    4 door sedan, V6 Auto

    75k miles

    White/tan

    I'm waiting for pictures.

This is an email I received from the dealer:

"The vehicle has never been in an accident and has had 2 previous owners.

There was a little rust on the the right rear fender that we had fixed and

it really probably could use 4 tires. the ones currently on there are louder

than normal. I can sell this vehicle with 4 new tires for $7,800 plus tax

    and title."

What's a fair price? Assuming it's clean inside and out?

    Thanks,

All these cars you're looking at on the internet, you need to "check out", for previous body damage, service history, etc. etc. And I don't mean, just doing a carfax. And at some point, you need to "pull the trigger", don't you? (Or do you?) If you're serious, call them, find out their real price, do your homework, & get your rear end down there.
  • goralgoral Member Posts: 149
Darn... You just beat out my $21.5 :)

Last time around the block, the car had a reserve of $27,900 which wasn't met.

    '00 Neon, 53k miles, 4dr, red

auto, ac, tires not so good.

good paint, no rust, no accidents known (2nd owner), good carfax.

I know that and you know that, but trying to convince HIM of that is the problem. Then again, I don't care, I tried to give him a reality check, guess the dealership did it too.

... Terry, need your help for my mother-in-law. She is looking at dropping these two vehicles, for who knows what yet, maybe a newer TL. She is in the East Tennessee region.

    2001 Acura 3.2 TL

    black w/ black interior

    miles - 56,xxx

    automatic

with Navigation system (only option available I think)

Interior is in decent shape. Exterior has a few bumps and bruises here and there, typical of a black car. Front bumper was repainted/repaired due to fender bender, has some overspray in areas so it'll be easy to spot by a pro.

Tires are new, brakes are fairly new. Has not had any typical service that is coming due, such as the 60k checkup.

    Second vehicle:

1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Extended Cab Shortbed

Dark blue ext w/ dark grey guts

    miles - 48,xxx

    4.0 v6 4 wheel drive

    5 speed manual

pw, pd, cd player, a/c, other std items.

Truck is in decent shape few knicks here as you get with pickups especially around the bed, has bed-liner and covered "top" for bed.

Tires and brakes are fairly new

What would be our typical trade-in values here.

Terry, as always, thank you much in advance.

Thanks much for your insight on the A4 trade. I will relay the info to my dad.

I felt a dealer that wants to move a car would give maybe $12k for their car or $10k combined with a decent near invoice price on the new car. They bought it in March or April of 2001 so they haven't even owned the car for 4 years. The 7.5-8k figures the dealers were throwin out just seemed ridiculously low and I was trying to figure out what was going on since these cars aren't cheap on the used car market. I'd expect to hear figures like that on a Honda Civic, not an Audi A4.

Looks like my better half is getting tired of hauling around 2 small kids in her Grand Prix, so its time for a minivan.

I'm going to sell the car myself, so I'm looking for a good newspaper listing price and a cut it loose from the herd price.

    Selling:

    Milwaukee metro area

    2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

    4 door, silver exterior

    56k miles

    sunroof

    cloth seats

auto climate control, power this and that, etc

    good condition inside and out

    no accidents, no dings

    all regular maintenance to date

    newer tires and brakes

extended warranty good for about 9 more months

I'm looking for a good value on a used minivan. The following one looked pretty decent to me. What range could I expect to pay for something like this:

    2003 Ford Windstar SE

    29,000 miles

    blue exterior

    rear heat and air

    quad seats

    keyless entry

all the usual power accesories for the trim level

    tires are original

body has one ding, but in otherwise good shape

    interior is clean

    Thanks for the help

Truck is in decent shape few nicks here as you get with pickups especially around the bed, has bed-liner and covered "top" for bed.

Tires and brakes are fairly new

What would be our typical trade-in values here.

Terry, as always, thank you much in advance.

                Mother-in-laws, Yikes .! .....

ET - phone home ... good description - thanks .. triple black is a good color for the area, miles aren't bad for the year, nav is good, we have some lumps bumps and fill and some overspray, sneakers are fresh, stoppers are good, 60k is due .... trade side, in and around the high super $11's low/mid $12's, might "maybe" get a dealer to crawl towards the $13 figure, but the 60k and the body stuff will probably hold it back .... me personally , I would run this dude down Retail Rd, a wonderful 4/5 liner Ad, a superb glow in the dark detail, records super-glued to the dash, finish any service, $16,490 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $15/$16,0 ...

The Ranger is a 4.0 4x4, Xcab, XLT, we have the meat clever with low miles, a few little Walmart kisses over here and a few little K-mart kisses over there, tonneau cover, almost strong in the rubber and stopper department ... if we have no click click in the 4wd, doesn't have that Bonnie and Clyde look, looks feels and drives like a 03 .. then trade side, in and around the tall $6's low low $7's ... another nice little driver for Retail Rd: $9,495 *asking* and $8,5/$8,9 gets a new owner .............. let me know ...

.... Believe it or not, they're doing the strong $2,5ish low low $3ish down the street from you, by the time the dealers get them home they have $3,5ish in it .... what can I say, I don't buy em', it's kinda like dating a sponge, you have to do all the work yourself ..l.o.l....

That's kind of the point: A Civic may be worth almost as much as a $28K Audi A4 after 4 years. BTW, what happened with the Acura dealer who offered $10K? Assuming an OK deal on a new Acura (they may not be discounted much, if any), & $10K for your A4........what's not to like???

    >>I'd expect to hear figures like that on a Honda Civic, not an Audi A4

Terry, would welcome your expertise on this.

What should I expect to get if trading at dealership?

Realistic on the high miles, just want to get a figure to go on. Thanks

    Not the expert...

But, you still have a lot of warranty and free maintenance left on your BMW.. Plus, even though it is a low-option model, it is an automatic.. and the E39 5-series has some of the best resale numbers going..

I can't imagine how it would be cheaper in the long run to trade off for a $26K-$35K new car.

Since you already own it, the best route is to keep driving it.

    heresy, I know..

    Hi all,

I'm buying a used car and need to find a fair value on a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT 2WD; however, there is a huge difference when I compared between Edmunds' TMV and Kelley's Blue Book.

Someone please advise me what would be a fair offer to a private individual selling the vehicle described below:

FORD 2003 SPORT TRAC XLT 2WD with the following options:

    Location: Los Angeles, California

2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT

    Body Style: 4 door

    Color: Black/Grey interior

    Engine: V6 4.0 Liter

    Trans: Automatic

    Drive: 2 Wheel Drive

    Mileage: 5,200

Condition: Excellent - has one slight 2" scuff mark on rear bumper

    Equipment XLT

    Air Conditioning

    Power Steering

    Power Windows

    Power Door Locks

    Tilt Wheel

    Cruise Control

    AM/FM Stereo

    Multi Compact Disc

    Premium Sound

    Dual Front Air Bags

    Front Side Air Bags

    ABS (4-Wheel)

    Leather Seat

    Power Seat

    Moon Roof

    Roof Rack

    Sliding Rear Window

    Running Boards

    Hard Tonneau Cover

    Bed Liner

    Alloy Wheels

P.S. The private seller is asking about 19+K and the car does look great. BUT HERE IS THE CATCH:

I CAN GET A BRAND NEW 2004 FORD Sport Trac XLS 2WD for $18,400 (out the door price would be $20,269).

So! Am I better off buying new or used? And if used is a better deal, what would be a reasonable offer price??????

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Or pay a "real" price for the used one - REAL money on that ride is under $16k retail.
