Just a comment on Carmax - check a while back and we too posted for info on a LR Disco II SE7 -01. Same problem - really low trade values. We went to Carmax and they were LOWER than any of the dealers we had talked to. Talked to a business associate in the used car business and he flat out said "they low priced it because they didn't want it"! So, I don't know that I would bother Carmax.

Try the private party sell - you might lose less.

    1.6L SOHC Supercharged engine (163HP, 100% stock)

    Front wheel drive

6-speed Getrag manual transmission with dual cone synchronizers

    Mileage: 16,840

Color: Chili Red Body/White contrasting roof

Factory equipment: 16 inch V-spoke silver wheels fitted with 16" Dunlop SP5000 Run flats, dual center exhaust, Harmon Kardon upgrade stereo system with single CD player, Panther Black Leatherette sports seats, Anthracite interior trim, Trip Computer, Front Fog Lights, Cruise Control, Steering wheel mounted stereo controls, 2-spoke sport steering wheel with perforated leather cover, Automatic self dimming rearview mirror, Rain sensing wipers, Manual A/C controls, power windows, locks, mirrors, 6-airbags, ABS, CBC, EBD, All speeds electronic traction control (ASC+T), front chrome grille, chrome exterior mirror caps, Union Jack flag vinyl roof decal, AUX input for MP3 devices such as i-Pods, Halogens headlights.

Cars in pristine condition. No dents or scratches (Very glossy red paint) just a few rock paint chips in bonnet (Hood), expected on a vehicle used as a daily driver. Interior is still showroom fresh, no food spills, no cigarette smoking, no children and no pets.

Car will be sold with balance of factory warranty (4 years/50K miles, whichever comes first) and factory free maintenance (3 years/36K miles, whichever comes first).

     Fantastic car and extremely reliable.

Appreciate any input regarding Trade-in and Private Sale prices.

             ================================

Down in South Beach - good description, thanks .... we have Chile pepper red, 100% stock, thank goodness and we have 17k, we need some round things, we have a load of stuff and you say it's nice with no paint work and no Swiss Army knives .... cute little dudes, trade side in and around the super tall $18's, low/mid $19's, might maybe "could" find a dealer to be a brave Hiawatha and get close to the $20ish figure, but I have a feeling the miles will hold it back ..... down Retail Rd.? these are kinda like Honda Civics, great vehicles, sell well, but the market is tight in the new vs used thing ... $22,9 *asking* and $21,5/$22,5 gets a new driver, the color might make a new buyer go blind on the rubber ........ ;)

                      Let me know.!

"low quotes on the trade-in of our Land Rover...Thoughts? "

Here's one thought: It's a vehicle that's not particularly reliable and notoriously expensive to fix. It's got low miles, but it's also seven years old and counting... I'm shuddering just thinking about it, and even though I'm in MI, it's not he weather...

Turn it around... who's gonna buy it? Can you thinkn of a sane person with an interest in Land Rovers, enough money to buy it and not be too worried about repairs... who wouldn't just go and buy a 2001?

It's often not so much the car, it's the fact that there's not many people to sell them to.

What did you pay for it when you bought it? $30K to $35K in 1998? Seven years, $25K or so depreciation, not that terrible for a vehicle that plummets in value like a LR. A (more expensive) Range Rover can drop at least $10K a year in value........

What do you think about this one?

    '03 MB C230 Sedan, 27K miles, 6-speed MT, silver/black, leather, sunroof, 6-disk CD changer, ...

Chicago area... Assuming everything checks out...

I can buy it for $21.5K+TTL.

The car is sitting at a Ford lot, but I've heard that the UCM ran it twice at wholesale auction w/o any luck (on his part).

    My car:

    2002/Honda/Civic

    2dr Coupe

    4 cylinder, Automatic, FWD

    29600 miles

    Silver exterior/Black cloth interior

    Options: moonroof,cassette,single CD player

    Condition:

One tiny ding on the right door, minor scratches

    Tires, 50% worn

    Brakes, 60% worn

Dealer maintained up to schedule, with all paperwork/receipts/window sticker

Has two minor accidents in parking lot, one was hit&run by an unknown person, causing a dent on left front bumper, another one was other party's fault damaged on right rear fender. All fixed by body shop, can hardly see if I won't tell.

I tried carmax, they offer $11,000. Do you think this is a fair price? Zipcode:95661

$11,000 ...? .. paintwork, 30k, auto, slider, accidents, needs rubber -- if you can get a dealer to give you $11,000 (American money) then you need to be there, quickly before the manager wakes up from his coma ....

We are interested in trading in our vehicle for new 2004 minivan (Honda/Nissan/Toyota), but we are getting low quotes on trade-in of our Land Rover...Thoughts?

     Location: Dallas, TX

    Year/Make/Model: 1998 Land Rover Discovery

    Body Style: LSE (4DR)

    Engine: V8

    Driveline: AWD/4WD

    Mileage: 38,110

    Color: Tan/Tan

Major Options: leather package; towing package; 2 sunroofs; chrome grill guard & running boards; ABS; dual airbags; heated seats; dual climate control; 6 CD changer; weather-band radio

Condition: Very clean inside/out; no rust, no major scratches/dings; only drove around town (grocery store/church, short trips)

      Tires - 25%(?) worn

Brakes - new (< 6 months old) Maintenance: all maintainence at dealer (maintenance package; still 1 service remaining)

               =============================

Good description - thanks -- oh how nice, we live in Dallas (Ha, no zipcodes here.!)

We have a 98 Disco LSE, we have 38k short miles, good color for anywhere, leather, sliders, braces, cold pack, (3rd seat.?) serviced and the rubber is a little on the weak side .... If ~ we don't have any paintwork, no kisses from K-mart, no soccer mom interior, drives/shows like an 02 .. then trade side, in and around the tall $7's, low low $8's, might "maybe" find a dealer to stagger up to the mid $8's if it's really nice and it needs -0- .....

Me personally, I would try a shot down Retail Rd, Land Rovers are pretty good sellers with low miles and are "kinda" like Louis Vuitton luggage, the name can sell em' and they have a Big book if they're nice ones .. finish any service, superb detail, Wonderful big 5/6 liner Fat Daddy Ad in the Dallas paper $11,900 *asking* and cut that dude loose for the first $10,5/$11,5 ... don't get greedy, it's a SUV and there is plenty of them for sale ...... what kind of figures are the dealers giving you.?

I need a price on my father's Grand Cherokee.

The car lives in Pittsburgh, PA

    2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo

    4wd

    6 cyl.

    Blue Gray ext/gray cloth.

    80,000 miles

The only option is a tow hitch that I can see.

The car has not been in an accident and is in ok shape, not great but not horrible either. He also just dropped a fair amount on money on new brakes.

I realize that this isn't much of a description, but this car is a dime a dozen in da Burgh and this one certainlly doesn't stand out. He is hoping to get out while the thing is still worth something.

    Thanks in advance.

i can probably help with this one.

in rocketland, we have a 5 year old LS. out of warranty, thats a minus. v6...no help there, and i will assume its an automatic. manual was optional in 2000. we also need new skins, which can be costly with the 17" sport pkg wheels. thats about $1000 for name brands.

as far as color goes, the exterior is right, and the interior is oh so wrong...black leather in texas??? OUCH!!! ;-)

trade side, i would call it around the mid-to-tall $7's. if its fully detailed, needs nothing other than the tires, and the leather looks like you floated over the seats, you *might* get a dealer to go as high as the low low low low $8's.

down retail road, you might like this answer a little better, since LS's have a big book. i would get a tip-top detail, put new tires on, and make the *asking* around the $12.9k mark. let the sucker go for the first $11.5k-$12k that comes along.

hope this helps. keep us posted on your progress.

    Hi Terry,

You did a trade value for me back around post #10,000(!) but I lurk here nearly every day because this board is so interesting.

I’m looking at the following on a used car lot in central Indiana & would like your opinion on a fair price (I’m not trading):

    Dealer is asking $26995

    VIN: 1GCHK29G44E397228

Location: Central Indiana (25 miles south of Indy)

    Year/Make/Model: 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

Body Style: Truck – Extended Cab 4 door (not crew cab) has ‘suicide doors’

    Engine: 6.0 liter Gas

    Driveline: 4WD

    Mileage: 4874

    Color: Gray/Gray

Major Options: LT trim level – leather, bun warmers, PW, PL, etc, Bose system, towing, On Star, (all the toys)

Condition: Presumably good, considering the low mileage but haven’t seen in person

Other: Carfax indicates that this is a ‘manufacturer’s vehicle’ that was sold at an Indiana auction on 12/15/04…would you have access to any info on this?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi Terry, or Mathias

I posted my 02 Mustang but I never got a reply, I've been reading the posts a lot so I know you miss them because you get so many appraisal requests everyday. I think I've decided to keep my Mustang so the resale doesn't really matter to me anymore. Anyway, I really like the re-styled MBZ CLK. A dealer is selling for $38,995, can you tell me if it's a good deal?

    Mileage 21,000

    Exterior Color White

    Interior Color Beige

    Body Style Coupe

    Engine 6 Cylinder Gasoline

    Trans. Automatic

The only major option I see is the sunroof package. The car already includes power/memory front seats, leather interior, Harmon Kardon sound system, ABS, ESC, CD, reasonably new tires/brakes. Very clean exterior and interior.

The car is located in Irvine, Southern Cali. What do you think it'll fetch? I do notice the MBZ CLK has the lowerst depreciation, and all the re-styled CLK I see are all quite expensive, but I know some of the left over 04 CLKs were selling for a tad over $40K, so an 03 with 21,000 miles should go around for $35K less huh?

In the land of the champion Trojans ... we have a 03 CLK, we have a slider, seats, good color anywhere, 21k - CPO.? .... if the history is fine, no visits to Maaco, no curb burners, just a nice serviced CLK .. then the dealer might have the tall $31, low $32ish figure in it, CPO add another $2grand, so figure in and around the $34ish range ... $38,900 ..? .. figure $35ish no CPO, figure $37ish with the CPO ..... sounds like your on the money..... let me know.!

    97 Mazda Miata - Special M Edition.

Dark metallic green, with tan leather interior and tan top (new top).

78,000 miles. Brand new Kumho tires. Car has been well maintained. Interior looks brand new - not even a wrinkle in the leather, and carpet is spotless. 1 small door ding on a rear quarter panel, and a few small chips on the nose.

5 speed, and since it is an M edition, it has every power goody and option possible - even the chrome wheels. Wood shifter and hand brake knob.

What do you think would be a good price for this beauty??? Thanks in advance for your time.

    Car is in NC.

...... Aaaah yes, the Miata's .. I've only sold a few hundred of these, nice little vehicles .. even after 17 years they're still hard to duplicate ....

In NC .. we have 78k "M" edition, new topper, new round things, you say it's been serviced and probably cared for ... if so, no repaints, no rebuilds, just a nice one with some miles ... dealer side, super tall $4's low $5's, add a new this and that and it probably see's the super tall $5's low low $6's at the table ..... fair price for both down Retail Rd.? .. the $7,9/$8,5ish zipcode if it needs -0- ...... what are they asking..?

               =============================

All my Ex's live in Texas ... great description - thanks .. I love that hand washing part ....

Miles are great for the year, the color is even better, we have the slider, V6 (ouch), sports stuff, forget me seats, (cd in the dash or the glove.?) new stoppers, but we need some rubber ..... if it's as clean as you say it is, then trade side, in and around the low/mid $10's, might get a dealer to drop the tall $10's, "maybe" the low low low low low $11's, but I have a feelin' the rubber will hold this one back, so I'm thinkin' mid $10's ..... what saves this dude is the miles, the color and the slider .... down Retail Rd, a superb detail, new round things, great Ad, $13,495 *asking* wave and cry at the first $12/$13 - but take it ......

                    let me know what happens.!

... **trade side, i would call it around the mid-to-tall $7's. if its fully detailed, needs nothing other than the tires, and the leather looks like you floated over the seats, you *might* get a dealer to go as high as the low low low low $8's** .....

                    What were you smokin'...?

With all due respect, and I understand that you sell cars for a living, I have to question your recommendation of the used Silhouette as a minivan bargain, esp in the "high teens - low 20's". With poor resale and crash scores of the Silhouette, there are better choices - I see 04 MPV LX's with 20-25 kmiles advertised by dealers starting at about 14.5k locally. Also, the discountinued Villager/Quest twins from 01/02 represent good values, IMO.

(I will be buying a minivan within the next year, so I gave this subject some thought :)

    Hi Terry and Mathias,

What do you guys think would be a fair trade-in value for this one? Also private party selling price?

    Raleigh, NC

    2004 Ford Explorer XLS 4x4

    13,400 miles

    4.0L V6

Aspen green (dark) / medium parchment (tan)

Really is in excellent condition, as new interior and exterior no deductions at all, slight tire and break wear consistent with mileage plenty remaining; all maintenance done, 3k mile oil changes with full synthetic

    Thanks in advance!

Hi guys. What do you think a fair trade-in value is for:

    Location: Houston, TX

    2000 Mazda 626 ES-V6

    Body: 4-dr sedan

    Engine: 2.5L V6 Automatic Trans.

    FWD

    Mileage: 60000

Options: Moonroof, Leather, Single CD player, AC, power driver's seat, pwr drs/wndws, keyless entry and security system.

    Condition:

Exterior: A few exterior dings, passenger side exterior mirror knocked off (attached with tape)

Interior: Dog claw marks in passenger seat upholstery.

    Tires: about 50% worn.

Maintenance: Routine maintenance up to date, but power steering comes and goes at low speeds (works fine above 10 mph though).

I'm not sure how popular these are at the auctions, but here it is:

    '05 Subaru Legacy GT Limited,

    Manual Transmission,

    Dark Blue w/ black leather,

1200 miles (yes - twelve hundred)

These things are loaded by default - the only option the car has is auto dimming rearview mirror.

    Chicago area...

I can buy it for $24,500+TTL.

Could I do much better at the auction?

    TIA

Like I said it all depends on your priorities. There are a vast majority of customers who don't look at crash scores. Value is what you percieve it to be. MPV is a bit smaller than the rest, but I agree, a good value. Since new was what was being discussed, I threw a used 04 out there. Bang for the buck you could get into Venture for the $14-16 range.

Resale would be a factor if you are paying

$29,000 for a new Silhouette. It would not be a factor buying it closer to the low $20's.

... that all I generally deal with are GM vans. Customers who are concerned w/ crash scores generally check the results out online so I never see them. I also sell Volvos but they always get good crash scores.

I do think the testing in our country is rather limited.

    "Hi Terry or Mathias,"

This is the third post today with this opening line. Like most boys, I like attention, but unless you desire information on a car of the sub-$3000 beater variety, I don't have any value to add to the discussion.

Of course, if I've researched a similar car recently, I might know something... but in that case, my information likely comes from Terry anyway. He's your man, and I REALLY wish some other pro would give him a hand. It's just that nobody, not even an insider like driftracer, has that kind of detailed insight into the whole of the market.

I am, however, more handsome than Terry.

Back in Nov (just after T'day) you provided this insight:

"Sooo, we have a 99 LE Camry 4dr, we have 85k, auto, ABS, color is that tanish brownish color, tires are almost good and the stoppers are fresh ... after a super detail, a wonderful 4/5 liner Ad, all the paper work in the front seat, $7,495 *asking* and cut and run at the first $6,5/$6,9 ....... if it's nice and properly done, I bet $6,9 will be the target figure ........... :)

Let me know how it goes .."

It just sold, after 1 week in the paper in Tucson AZ. (they let a nephew (ahem..my son) drive it for about a month) It now has 89,000 miles, advertised it for $7,500 per your suggestion, and they sold it for $7,200.!! Thanks for your continued Insight. And NO! You're not a hybrid, at least I don't think so! LOL

I'd buy that GT for 24.5K myself, if it was a clean title and no body/paint issues. 6K off MSRP for 1,200 miles, current year? SOunds good to me.

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
