They do hold their value quite well, so I think the money is $15K, perhaps closer to $16K if the stars are properly aligned and the gods smiling..
Bill
Hmm, Shoot for $5K-5,500 for your Accord, retail.
I think that $4,500 or so with the hail is fair on the Civic..
Hope this helps!
Bill
Crown Vic LX, lite green, loaded, cloth, with 81k miles in very good cond.
What can I expect for trade in value? Thanks.
I've put the Accord in for $4,750 and I was able to get the Civic for $3,000.
Also, if it's not too much trouble my fiance would also like to know how much his 1994 Lexus LS400 would be worth. It's pearl white over tan leather. It has Nakamichi, traction control, heated seats, and the upgraded wheels. It has 117,000 very pampered miles on it and is in immaculate mechanical and visual condition.
Thanks in advance again.
I'm thinking..wow.. this is a tough call. Typically I'd say $22-23K wholesale (In line with what similiar mileage ones are selling for at Riverside Aution in LA) and about.. ohh.. $27K or so retail.
That being said, on the private-party retail side, I think you ought to be able to get closer to $29K if that car is nice with the wheels and stereo and all...
Put it in the paper for $29,900 and see.
Bill
If its' clean, Ithink that it ought to be worth about $3,500 or so. Closer to $4K in FL and Midwest, Closer to $3K in the northeast.
Hope this helps!
But first, why not throw it in the paper for $5,900/BO?
Bill
Bill
I assume this car has never had paintwork, right?
Where ya located again? I looked em up and the prices seem to be swinging a little.. Still I think you gotta be able to get $14-15K out of it at least on a retail level. $11K or so wholesale..
Bill
that buying used, when you find something you want, usually you
have to move quick. At least I know what I should expect if I trade.
Thanks again.
I still think that selling it yourself is a good way to go, especially on lower priced cars.
If its' say, a 99 LX470 or something where retail is $45K, wholesale $40K, and tax cerdit $2,400... then I would trade it. But the percentages get a lot higher on lower priced cars..
Still, I respect your situation!
Bill
As far as CarMax goes.. I'm not sure but I think they have gotten a little smarter about buying cars... Certainly can't hurt to try tho!
Bill
Thanks
Marian
OK.. from looking at the market.. Looks to me like actual wholesale on your Truck is $9,500-10K.
I'd say you ought to be able to get at least $12K or so out of it retail...
Hope this helps!
Bill
with 30400 miles, power windows/mirrors, ac, cruise, CD/Cassete player.
30K miles service is not performed & all the tyres are in BAD shape. No maintenance records available. NADA trade-in is: 11500 + 125(CD) + 175(mileage)
Please suggest.
She didn't even want to place an ad (?), but I finally talked her into at least putting it into our intranet classifieds at work. The day she was supposed to take delivery of her 626 and find out what they were going to offer her on a trade-in ($2200 if she was lucky, I'm guessing), someone at work bought it...for $3900!
Did I also mention that they (she and her husband) were going to go shopping for it on Memorial Day and I called her at home and told her I had seen an ad that Mazda was now offering the Premium package (which she wanted) for free on 626s?
I figure I saved her $1200 on the Premium package, and $1700 on the trade vs. private party and...nothing. She said "thanks" but that's all. I'm going to have to hit her up for a lunch and a ride in the new car, I'm thinking.
Anyway, thanks again for your help. Great service you provide!
And yes, the Civic was a good deal. Put $300 into it so far in new tires and wipers..now all that's left is the timing belt..so all in all it's gonna cost about $4,000.
NADA is close for a change....
They seem to be all over the place, wholesale, for about $11Kish with that many miles on them in somewhat edgy shape.
Figure I wouldnt go much over $13,200 or so onthat car... Shoot for like $12,900 or so.
Hope this helps!
Bill
Sheesh, think shed give ya a comission....
Bill
It might be an Anniversary edition...
Coach Editions will say Coach on them and have perforated leather...
If its' a slightly darker pearl white (Called White Onyx Pearl) and all sliver-painted wheels..
Bill
'98 VW GTI VR6, white, leather, 28K miles, Chicago area.
I just did an extensive search of dealerships in the region and found about 20 for sale. 18 of them were $15-18,000 asking price. One was $19,000 and one was $13,500.
If very few are actually sold through auction, doesn't that completely skew the results?
So this car is almost out of question!
Any comments ? I am sure the rental vehicles are abused like anything....
I traded in a Windstar last year. Every dealer had a "real" price lower than these quotes. Is this just another source of profit for the dealer?
I went through this last year when trading in a Windstar...very tiring.
At least we both are aware
I based it on what the auction results showed what a couple sold for recently in Atlanta..
Good luck!
Bill
If its' nice... That car is $14K wholesale easily... What are they asking for it?
Bill
Is it a GS, LS or Nautica? My Black Book shows $8,550 for rough (I.E. 60K miles or so) on a GS to $14K or so for "clean" (20K miles and perfect) for a Nautica..
Villagers, as a rule, rarely break the bank at the auctions tho, and they are easy to find. But...
What color is it? Mileage? Condition? (Has it ever been in a body shop?), etc..
Then I can give you an idea of what current market is on them... there's a lot of variables.
Bill
I'm not afraid of rentals. Generally they are very well maintained. I'm more worried about their cosmetic condition than anything else.
My wife (Ex actually but thats unrelated) is driving an Ex rental Jaguar S-Type 3.0
2000, Silver/Ivory Leather, 3.0 with Moonroof, CD Changer... Paid $31,700 for it with 15K miles.
Bill
You're in the right market for that vehicle. Here in FLorida it'd struggle to be worth $8,500 or so (Nobody here wants 4WD.. and most wont pay a premium for it) Much as a 2WD is virtually worthless where you are.
If I were you.. why not slap it in the paper closer to October for $12,900?
That's the time to sell a 4WD up north!
Bill
Hmm.. I'd sell it myself. Typically a $13,500 or so car, yours is probably closer to $12K-12,500 wholesale because of the paint. My suggestion is to try $15,900ing it in the paper.
BMWs like that are pretty easy sales as a rule if they look nice and run well...
Bill
1) Mileage sounds VERY low for a 1992.
2) I'm sorry to say, its' still a 1992 Sable, and they just arent worth very much.
That being said, I could see someone paying $2,000 for that car, but I would not call it likely. On older cars, the market gets kinda funny. Truly immaculate ones willbring some money, but still not a lot. A super mint one with 50K or so might still only do $2,500 wholesale.
I'd peg it at closer to $1,500 or so. The typical 92 Sable is, wholesale, an $800-1,000 car. Now, you mentioned that it would be classified as "rough", if its' in iffy cosmetic shape, its' certainly not going to do $2K i'm afraid.
Hoeever, if its' presentable and runs well... Why not throw it in the paper for $3,900 or so and see what happens?
As far as the online sources vs what cars are worth.. I base my appraisals on what a car is selling for at auction (Which Black Book is very much in line with). That is, in my experience, the only way to truly gauge the actual wholesale market on a car.
Hope this helps
Bill
After they revived me, I came home and saw your post (I went to the dealership before I saw the post)...you were right on. NADA said $11,500 and I've got $12,700 in the damn thing, so that made the RAV4 i wanted just a titch more expensive then i could stomach....but thanks for taking the time...so I'm just reporting that your numbers were defintely "real world" trade numbers.
If the wholesale price is so low why are dealers selling it for so much. It really sounds like the book price is used to screw people. It really does.
Is there a seperate listing in the famous "black book" to add on features or is there just a flat price?
Let me ask this again, If most Villagers never go to auction, doesn't that completley skew any results?
Just to prove my point, I want you to find me a 1998 Mercury Villager, rear air , tinted windows, roof rack, captains chairs etc and it should sell for about $10,000 retail (if you are right). Let me know where I can pick one up.
In the last 6 weeks or so (I didnt update my software yet this week) it looks like 24 1998 Villager GSs have sold through various Manheim Auctions with mileage between 37,005 and 37,986. There's LOTS of them at the sales as I had suspected.
It seems like prices are pretty stable on them nationwide.. I don't see much in the way of really noticeable regional swings unlike some cars (I.E. a 2WD SUV is not worth much in Minnesota, and a Miata is worth a LOT more in Orlando than Minneapolis in January).
That being said, looks like $10,500-11,000 is where they're selling.
When you look at the ones with miles around 40K or so (Seems to be the average) you're closer to $10,000-10,500.
The Black Book that I have at the house here, is about a month old. It lists, for the southeast, a 1998 GS at $8,550 for "rough" (About what I would have to pay for one with 60K miles or so on it) $10,200 for "average" (right about where a 40K mile one is selling for at the auctions) and $11,700 for "clean" (About what I'd have to pay for one with 22K miles or so on it). It also lists $12,450 for "Extra-Clean" (what one with, perhaps 8K miles on it might sell for) but very very few vehicles are ever worth that much, they are the extreme exception. On the other end, Vans like yours with 70-80K miles are perhaps $6,500 wholesale vehicles, well below "rough" book.
Out of at least 200 or so records for the last month for 98 GS Villagers, I saw exactly 3 with under 10K miles on them. One did around extra clean book.
As far as equipment adds... Leather ($300), CD ($125), Sunroof ($300) and Dual Air ($350 for GS and LS) are listed. Deducts are 5-passenger (-450) and No A/C (-$675).
In reality, I think that only leather, roof, maybe dual air are going to make a difference. As a rule, only major options do. Lack of air may not hurt one in Fargo, ND much, but its' going to punish one more than $675 here in Florida in my experience (More like a $500-750 deduct plus shipping to somewhere in the north).
So with Rear Air, and if its' clean, and isnt in a crazy color like Brown or Yellow-Gold or Orange or Purple, With Rear Air, if its' clean, its' gotta be worth $11,000 wholesale I think.
That being said, it's also a $14,995 retail unit (asking price, which is what you're seeing) assuming the dealer took it in on trade for $11K, spent the typical $500 in inspection, servicing, detailing, fixing paint chips, etc.. And it'd probably end up selling for something . I'd say that it ought to end up retailing for $13,500 or so. Obviously, as a dealer it'd be nice if I could retail that van for $18K or something nuts like that, but thats' being greedy. Figure another $600 or so if its' "certified" (extended warranty packed in).
So, the "Black Book" isn't out to screw people. Its' simply reporting market conditions. Now, if you were offered $9K for your Van that's way too low. If you were offered $13,500 trade for it.. be suspicious. I would be.
You also mentioned asking prices of up to $18-19K. That seems high to me.. buuut...If it was an LS it'd be worth another $2,000 or so wholesale (Remember I mentioned that $14,995 asking price) so you'd have $16,995.. And a Nautica seems to be worth more than that even. So maybe a low mileage Nautica Edition could be justified (not necessarially do I think that $19,000 for a 98 Villager is perhaps the best way to spend one's money) at that price.
Again, there's a ton of variables out there...
Hope this helps explain it, but, to answer your other question, yeah. There's a LOT of Villagers at the auction, from the looksof it most seem to be lease returns.
Bill
I think that those 98s use Immobiliser keys... It could get expensive.
Just in case you did CarFax it, right?? I don't trust "clean" titles....
Bill
115k miles with all maintenance.
What can I expect as a trade in southern calif. Also does it make a difference if trade in to whomever I buy from versus just selling to a Ford dealer. Finally, what are auction prices currently running.
I know the miles are high but it is in great shape in and out.
Bill
Better than I had thought. The miles hurt it quite a bit, but it seems that it still should be worth roughly $5,500 or so from where I sit.
That's about where they seem to be at the auctions... the number I most commonly see is about $5,500-6K. Bear in mind with the miles, people arent going to be stepping up on the truck i'm sorry to say. As far as trading.. I'd say it probably wont make a huge difference really..
Some sold for less, but I assumed they had to be in roughish shape. As usual, I go with the median...
Hope this helps!
Bill
