True, true. It happened a few years ago and the damage is like one inch long. I don't even "see" it anymore.

I was thinking more like major damage. You know huge dents, fender hanging off etc...

    Thanks!!

    Hi again Terry,

How about the wife's car? Really like those new 'stangs. This would be at the Ford dealer in Wilmington NC.

    2001 Ford Mustang Deluxe Coupe

    3.8 liter V6 AUTO RWD

38,000 miles, super clean, all records, no whammies

Dark red exterior ("laser" red?), dark grey (charcoal?) cloth

CD, cruise, alloys, all power, but no fog lights, no ABS or traction control

New tires but might need pads soon (rotors are great)

Very nice driver/looker- aftermarket stainless steel dual exhaust (all the way) and some black decals on the hood / bumper which match the side decals from the factory

This one's almost paid for, and she'll drive it until the wheels fall off (or until she gets a '65)- but I might be able to talk her into trading for a new one (with a stick!) they ride/handle so much better and are much more comfortable- or would you wait 'till spring and try to retail her? Thanks again!

Hi Terry et al: I need the numbers for a good friend, both trade and retail. While we all know this is not the time of the year to trade a RWD sports-car, well, sometimes the new car bug bites, and......

... **It's not easy getting 'real-world' values on these conversion vans, eh?** ...

Actually it's pretty easy, I used to be a MKIII dealer a few years back ... the hard part is the right info ....

                     high top ..... low top.?

                           Big discount, no top ....?

    .. **American translation: I paid too much - "

I think part of this problem is when people try to get cars that just come out (new or redesign). Usually, people pay at or close to MSRP** ..

             ===========================

We can always blame it on paying too much, that the easiest excuse there is .l.o.l.. ... but lets not forget, the vast majority of buyers put little or no money down and for the ones that do put money down, it's usually not enough to even cover the taxes and fee's .. and lets not forget the length of the loan, especially with folks going 66/72/84 months ~ there is more than one leg to that table, it's always easier to blame the other guy ............. ;)

Birmingham, AL at the local Acura dealer

     2004 Acura TSX

    CPO

    6 speed manual

    37,617 big miles

    silver with gray interior

    no navigation

exterior and interior in good but not new shape

    cheap aftermarket wheels/tires (stock size)

    no apparent prior damage.

They have it listed in $24K. They had it on ebay twice. One time the bidding reached $18,500, the second time $17,500, but the minimum was never reached.

What do you think they need for this oddball?

                =========================

Bama' boy .... we have an 04 TSX, good color, we have the that movin' around thing between the seats, a bunch of miles and we have some Wal-mart wheels ... if the history is right, no paint by numbers, serviced and the rubber is deep ... then they probably have the super ultra tall $18's, low/mid $19's, might have fallen' on their heads and dropped $20 in it, maybe ..... Retail Rd.? $22ish would be all the cookies in the cookie jar ... the miles and the handshaker is keeping the crowds away .. ;).

.... **Just sounds like hogwash** .... oh, yeah.! and your Mom wear's Army boats ..l.o.l....

Using a Benz "S" class is not really a good example, the folks that purchase those types of high dollar dudes buy a car and with that car comes a status, a mark in life, a symbol ... that said, Black "is" popular, go to any dealership in Chicago/Cleveland/Boston/NY/LA and black vehicles sell well .. who ever heard of buying a new "black" A8 off the showroom floor in January with 15 inches of snow on the ground, but it's done everyday ...

The big difference is, down south, black cars don't sell well, even now with black being in Vogue, they still don't sell well - one stupid reason: they're hot .. and when you pick your skin off the seat and after that nice little visit to the local EMS, it kinda gives ya that "oh yeah" now I remember why I didn't want a dark car ..

Of course you will always get that first buyer in Houston, Shreveport, Mobile, Charleston and Tampa, the first time usually cures them, and how many black rental cars do you see in Vegas or Phoenix.? ... right now it's winter, so the first time buyers in Raleigh, Huntsville, Jackson, Little Rock and Scottsdale, might grab one ....

Depending on the area, in another 7/9 weeks you won't be able to give them away and in another 2/3 months, you won't see the southern dealers carry but one or two, unless they got hammered by the manufacturer or they stole it .... thats why (depending on the vehicle) they can be a $700/$1,500/$2,000 "deduct" at trade-time, and that includes those little S500's ... it's kinda like boats, how many do you see with black interiors, even in Wisconsin ... every dealer I saw today at the auction that was buying a dark vehicle was a Yankee dealer, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, etc - it's a geographic business thing, not a personal thing ................. :)

Have you tried putting your butt into a black interior that's sat in the Florida summer sun for even 15 min? I had a black/black Saab 9000......acres of black leather inside. Even in N.E., any sunny day above 70 degrees, the interior became very uncomfortable. In the 80's or 90's, I scrambled every time I got out of the car to put sunshades on at least 2 of the windows, even to leave it for 10 minutes.

Then there's the difficulty of maintaining a black exterior (Road & Track did a 6 page article on it once), but even that's not as hard to deal with as a black interior in hot weather, imo.

Real money ~ $19,900 *asking* grab $18,5/$19,5 if your south, and if your in the snow belt you can try to give it away for $17ish, maybe ..... $28,000.? it must be a misprint or someone is too close to the Jim Beam ........... ;)

Location: Santa Barbara, CA. Would be doing trade in in Southern California region or sell privately here.

    Year/Make/Model: 2000/Toyota/Celica GT

    Body Style: 2dr Hatchback

    Engine: 1.8 liter / 4 cylinder / automatic

    Driveline: FWD

    Mileage: ~38,100

    Color: Liquid Silver Exterior

Major Options: Allow wheels, moon roof, rear spoiler, fogs, aftermarket Sony CD/FM/AM Deck, original headunit included as well.

Condition: Clean interior. Dings on front inside door plastic from seatbelt releases hitting them. No stains or any large defects. Interior very sound. Exterior has minor scratches (hairline or less) or nicks. Largest defect is on passenger side door, deep-ish scratch a few inches long. Blends in with paint. Does not show bare metal.

Tires - Bought new in 06/03. Good % of tread left. At least 50%. Put < 20,0000 miles on them. Brakes - Perfect, smooth. Maintenance - All done. Other: Rear passenger side wheel well was dented in by another driver in a parking lot while I was not present. No structral damage, just the shell body. Fixed under their insurance. Front driver side wheel well was slightly dented in parking lot as well. Area right where the lip is, maybe 6 inches long, 2 inches high. Any help would be appreciated. I'd like all different values if possible. I feel my car is at least in good condition. Somewhere between KBB Good and Excellent. Mechanically it is perfect and I have never ever had a problem with it.

Hi. I just posted about the fact that I'm upside down with the loan on this car on another board. I'm interesting in finding out what I can expect to get when selling this car.

     Location: Washington DC Metro area

    Year: 1998

    Make: Mitsubishi

    Model: Diamante ES

    Body Style: 4 dr

    Engine: 3.5L V6

    Driveline: FWD

    Mileage: 52K

Color: Interior is gray. Exterior is silver

    Major options: NONE

Condition: Exterior is in good shape. I did back up into a pole a few years back and there is a small area where the paint peeled away. Other than that no major dings or scratches. The interior is also in good shape. Even with two small kids I keep it very clean.

Brakes: Front brakes were replaced in 2002.

Tires: Car has new front tires.

We've kept up with the maintenance. Oil changes and all of that.

     No accidents or damage.

I owe $8,736.00 and realize I won't be able to sell for that amount but would love to get as close to possible.

                   ==========================

DC huh ...? where the heck are my free tickets for the Inauguration ..?

98 Mitsu ES Diamante ... color is okay for the area, miles are super low, base model with no toys, got some new round things, stoppers are a help and we have the right service ... we have a few meteorite hits in the stern area, but if it's a nice one, cared for and it looks/drives and feels like an 02 ... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $3's, might "maybe" get a dealer to drop the tall $3's low low low low low low low low $4's in it cuz' of the looow miles ~ and if the planets are properly aligned ...... good vehicle down Retail Rd, superb DC detail, a glorious 5/6 liner Ad, all the service records falling out of ther glove box, $7,900 *asking* and drop kick that dude at the first $6,9/$7,5 .. ... if it's nice, the low miles will save it .. so, actually your not in bad shape if you can handle the difference money ........... :)

Let me know how it goes ...

I emailed him about the car because I priced one out on carsdirect.com with the exact option for a brand new 2004. The price was $27,200 for a new 2004 from them. I asked if the price was suppose to be $18,000 and he said he had to get $28,000 to pay off the loan.

just like a vehicle's value isn't the sum of its combined parts, as in you have to get back the money from the $800 brake job, like that should magically appear as an "add" in Kelley or NADA,

your payoff, and your vehicle's value, have absolutely NOTHING to do with each other.

Thanks for the reply Terry. I just read it to my dh. Took me a few reads to decode. ;-)

We think it's a nice car. We will probably definitely look towards a private party sale. Right now we are wanting to buy a mini-van.

Any suggestions on how to time a private party sale w/ buying new from a dealer?

I'll keep you posted. Oh about the Inauguration...luckily my dh gets off work. We are staying far far away from downtown. lol

I really have no idea how much my vehicle is going for now and I'm not sure what a good price is for a 2000 Buick Regal GS, fully loaded with 16,000 miles on it. But I'm hoping for an even trade in. I'd appreciate a trade in and retail estimate on my truck, and what price i'd expect to pay for the buick. Thanks!

No worries - perhaps a value for northern NY state? Say ... Massena or Watertown? I can do the conversion.

    Thanks.

.. **The price was $27,200 for a new 2004 from them. I asked if the price was suppose to be $18,000 and he said he had to get $28,000 to pay off the loan** ..

Dealers hear this more than any other issue.!

It kills me .. except for a few honest souls here, I'm "amazed" that it's not talked about more on Edmunds - it always ends up being: the dealer wouldn't make a deal, they were rude, they insulted me with a crazy price, they wanted more money down, they're trying to rip me off ... truth be known, most owe more than it's worth, of course we never hear about that part ~ it must be one of those Private Skull Fraternity secret handshake wink things ..l.o.l....

Thanks much for your reply. I think I will have a nice detail done on it and maybe try a nearby 'leave it and sell it lot' (Wheels and Deals, San Jose). Meantime, wife is driving it to work at the mall with For Sale sign I stuck on there this AM before your message came in. And, proving once again that great minds think alike, the number I picked for the sign was ... $8900 !!

Thanks!

Saw this jewel in the parking lot of the local Winn-Dixie...

    92 Toyota Paseo

    Aquamarine with black guts

    Handshaker

faded paint (brought back memories of my old Shadow)

    K-mart wheel covers

Full taliban interor, tastefully remedied with Wal-mart seat covers

Dark tint starting to fade to a lovely shade of purple

    168K miles

Here's the part that will make Terry reach for the phone to call the local rehab center for this dude:

    Price $2200!!!

I almost started laughing out loud. He had just dumped 1800 into this baby, so I guess he's trying to recoupe his 'invesment.'

What would be a realistic price on this?

*cringe* A Paseo. I hit one of those when I worked in sales at the GMC dealership. Was showing a customer a new 99 Sierra SLT, went to pull out of the parking spot to put the truck back and grab another one, swung too soon and clobbered the Paseo next to it. The car was there for a beauty pack.......

It is tough to consider a vehicle excellent with high miles, bald tires, and stone chips on the bumper hood and windshield.

How much of a fall have the LH cars taken now that DCX came out with the LXs? It might not be a bad time to pick up a 300M, if you can accept the transmission risks with those cars.

How 'bout it? Terry? Drift? Steine?

Location: Santa Barbara, CA. Would be doing trade in in Southern California region or sell privately here.

    Year/Make/Model: 2000/Toyota/Celica GT

    Body Style: 2dr Hatchback

    Engine: 1.8 liter / 4 cylinder / automatic

    Driveline: FWD

    Mileage: ~38,100

    Color: Liquid Silver Exterior

Major Options: Allow wheels, moon roof, rear spoiler, fogs, aftermarket Sony CD/FM/AM Deck, original head unit included as well.

No structural damage, just the shell body. =============================

                Good description, thanks.!

Except for a few little kisses and a touch here and there, it's probably not a bad little driver .. the miles are low, the color is right, we got the auto thing, slider, wing, foggers and the service is right, so lets say "good" -- excellent.? .. are you driving a new RL with 900 miles.?

These are nice little vehicles, "quirky" in the market, but nice ... some dealers do well with them and then the dealer 25 miles away can have one sit for 3 months, Yota has been shaking their head on this one for years .... trade side, in and around the low/mid $8's, might "maybe" get a dealer to wander towards the $9 figure, and on the right day, with the right barometric pressure and with the alignment of Jupiter in it's second phase, you could see the low/mid $9's, maybe ...... Me personally , no questions asked, down Retail Rd it would go, a super detail, a Glorious 5/6 liner Ad in the Big paper, $11,900 *asking* and kick and cry at $10,5/$10,9 -- but take it ....

Happy hunting and let me know.!

                                         Terry.

" Using a Benz "S" class is not really a good example, the folks that purchase those types of high dollar dudes buy a car and with that car comes a status, a mark in life, a symbol ... that said, Black "is" popular, go to any dealership in Chicago/Cleveland/Boston/NY/LA and black vehicles sell well .. who ever heard of buying a new "black" A8 off the showroom floor in January with 15 inches of snow on the ground, but it's done everyday ...

All well said, but then why is edmunds TMV only showing a price hit of $70-90 for a black car in its TMV pricing miodels. That's an order of magnitude off from what you're stating.

I've actually placed digital thermometers in several of my cars and left them there to sit while I'm at work and even light coloured cars can get VERY hot inside. I put one in a lt grey coloured interior that I had tinted the glass all around and at lunchtime the thermo read 144 degs F! That's pretty HOT, and the car wasn't black or any dark colour. I've burned my hands on the steering wheels of several grey and tan steering wheels too in addition to my black cars.

Bottom line after a certain amount of time outside ANY car is going to get real hot in the south.

As far as black cars being more difficult to maintain - that BS, they show dirt more readily than all the various beige-tan me-too coloured cars out there, but it's no harder to wash or wax a black car than any other colour. And when it's clean, it looks real sharp!

Body: 2 door Coach Builders Limited Convertible

    Engine: Northsrtar 4.6L V8 275 HP

    Drive: FWD

    Mileage: 83,000

Colour: Crimson Pearl (Cadillac's "extra cost pearl paint)

Major Options: Chrome Wheels, dual power seats with memory and power lumbar, garage door opener, GM 12 disc CD changer Standard items included ABS, PASS Key, dual zone, AC, leather, etc.

NO BOSE SYSTEM (it was an option on ESCs standard on ETCs)

Condition: good / clean, no dents/ scratches / tears/ stains

    Tires: Nearly new (3,000 miles)

    Brakes: 50%

Maintenance: done at dealer, I have most records on hand.

Repainted fromt bumper and front surface of mirrors because of the massive bug problem we have here in FL.

Why am i even considering this? Because a dealer in Sarasota called me stating that they have a 2002 Eldorado (last year made) ETC (so it has the Bose system and stabilitrak, etc and 25 more HP), same crimson pearl colour, same hard boot Coach Builders conversion, and only 4,000 miles - all with a price tag in the stratoshpere!

So what do you think what would be good figures for either of these cars (me trading the 2000 in on the 2002)? In other words is it worth "it" to basically move up 2 years and back some 78,000 miles and what exactly is the the "it" worth???

I'm tempted but, I like what i have EXCEPT for the wimpy non bose stereo system!

I'm trying to assess the value of my 2000 LS. It is black and has about 67,500 miles and v8. Rather than list what it has, I'll say it basically has every thing it could have except the cell phone addition (not sure what it even is). I also have about 22k miles or just over 2 years left on a transferrable ford extended warranty. What should I execpect for it in the Cincinnati, OH area?

    Thanks
