OK, I have a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder LE. It has 39k miles, leather, 2WD (ouch!), moonroof, power seats, and an additional Carmax 4 year warranty. Northern Virginia area... Unfortunately, I bought it last summer and realized it's too much car for me. Now, I can not get a quote above 14k on it and I don't know where to start on a retail value (still owe 15k - looking to break even). I've looked at the blue book, edmunds, and all those but it still isn't consistent. In addition, some punk rear-ended me and I had to have a bumper replacement. The body shop was nice enough to repaint some of the scratches out while they had the car, so overall the paint is great and the interior is superb. Give me what you got!!!
I have been a little busy( 3 auctions in 3 days), so I thought I would drop in, and see what going on ....
If I'm reading this right -- this a 98 Villager GS with 37klicks in darn good shape right..?
If it is clean, straight up and needs nothing --- you are looking at a $10,000/$10,500 vehicle on the push (real money)....
There is more Villagers at the auctions --- then "braces at a NSync concert" -- remember they have lots of trunk money, rebates, etc.. on these little puppies- besides the body style change ..and this will start right after the 4th when the plants open up, after the yearly 4th shut down .... If you retail it-- try, in and around that $13,000 figure ---
Hello, i have a 98 Honda Civic EX, dark green with all the options except the spoiler, plus it's an automatic and there's a little over 36,000 miles on it. There are a few little scratches and one minor dent underneath the right tail light. I have taken it to 2 separate places and gotten their appraisels (spelling?...sorry) and one said $9,200 and the other said about $10,000. I'm looking to sell it retail at around $12,500-$13,000. What would be a decent trade-in value for my car?
I'm not sure what i want to buy next, most likely a 98 Cavalier Z-24 Convertable if i must trade it in. Or a 97-98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP if I'm lucky enough to sell it retail.
Thanks for listening, please reply with your thoughts.
...... These are nice vehicles , and Nissan has done a great job on the new style and such...
But anyway, lets get back to this 96 LE.. Now is the time to be trading a 2WD -- consumers do have short term memory loss in the summer of what a vehicle will or wont do in the winter.
If this Pathfinder has "eyes" -- looks sharp, needs - 0 - knee deep in rubber, and "new owner ready" (and the miles are right).... You are looking in and around a $10,500/$11,000 "real money figure" ...If you are being shown more, it's strickly "over allowance"
If you want to retail it --- clean and detail it -- have all the service records ready to -rock and roll- and throw it, in the largest newpaper in the area ..and don't be shy, take a 4/5 liner out with a great description of it, and start like ...$14,000 ish --- never- be the most expensive in the paper always be closer to the middle or less for a fast turn...
.......... I don't think you will have any problem unloading this little darlin'...
The miles are right, it's auto, it's the right color ---- Like I just mentioned in the above post --- Get her ready for sale!
As far as a trade in (real money) depending on the dealer, you are in and around that $10,500/$11,000 zipcode if it's coupe...and if it's a sedan, you are a little closer to that $11,000/$11,500 number ($9,200..? I would love to buy them all day for that number, nice or not)... and to retail it -- you can be in the paper for a easy $13,000ish figure -- If -- the vehicle is very clean and needs --- 0 ---
Quotes/Appraisals from Carmax are real money. They just have a $159 processing fee that must be deducted from whatever your appraisal was. My guess is they are giving a little extra on the Pathfinder because it is a Carmax car.
If that's real money... $14K... thats VERY strong. I dont understand why carmax would do that... Cars like that are doing, like Terry said, $10-11K at auction... And those are really nice ones...
Can someone help me with perspective on my trade-in? I have a '96 Nissan Quest XE, blue, with power doors/locks, cruise control, privacy glass. It has 92K miles, and what seems to be the amount of dings and scratches you'd expect on a 5-year-old car. It runs perfectly, and EVERYTHING works. I want to buy a Toyota Sienna and I'm being quoted good prices on it, but when it comes to the trade-in, I'm getting bids of $3740 up to $5500. Is this just a way for these salespeople to make up the profit on their car (which they certainly are proud of) or is my Kelly Blue Book value of around $6500 so off base?
Oh, I can get $6500 from at least one Nissan dealer if I buy another Quest.
$6,500 seems a bit optimistic.... I looked it up against what they are doing at auction...and $5K-5,500 seems to be in line with current wholesale sales results. The miles do hurt it quite a bit... But, OTOH, you also got a lot more use out of the car. Sort of a seesaw effect I suppose..I ca sympathise tho; I'm the guy with the 127K mile Jag! (Very very bad valuewise).
As far as the high bidder... that's a tough call with the miles to be frank. I like to look at car deals in a very black and white manner.. Your trade is worth $X, the new car costs $X. I dont like under or overallowances myself. I think you need to basically figure that a bid in the 5K-5,500 range is probably going to be "real money" and to see where the deal lies from there on the Sienna.
We don't see many Jaguars up here in the Panhandle, at least not in Panama City but when I saw an out of state XK8 convertible last year I knew I had to get one. Imagine my suprise when I opened the Sunday paper to the car section and there was a Red 99 XK8 conbvertible for sale at the local Dodge dealer. I took my wife to the dealership to show her since she had not seen one up close. I was very surprised at the number of rock chips in the paint of the nose of this car. Anyway they were asking $44,999. The vehicle had 26,000 miles on it and would have to be driven at least 100 miles to Tallahasse for warrenty service althought this vehicle may be about 1 years depreciation out of my price range can you give me the wholesale retail price spread?
67,000 miles, sunroof, 5 speed, cloth interior. Could use a detailing but otherwise very clean for the most part. About what would you say the value of this car is on the east coast of Florida at a Jeep/Suzuki SUVish type dealership.
Seriously looking at this car trying to figure out what I should offer. Thanks in advance guys.
Bruce
PS: How reliable are these vehicles? Average repair costs? And would ya encourage a young 19 year old like myself to pick it up?
Other than the stone chips.. what's wrong with it? That's about what it would do at auction.. $45-47K is roughly the range for a nice 99 without a lot of miles. If its' Carnival Red (Metallic burgandy) than it will certainly do $45-46K at auction if its' nice.
One of two things happened here:
1) They want OUT. O U T OUT.
2) They got REAL Lucky on a trade. But that car is a deal. And the nearest dealer is either Jacksonville or probably Mobile, AL (Jaguar of The Gulf Coast).
I dont think there's a Jag store in Tallahassee.
Irrespective, its' a hell of a car... I say pull the trigger as long as it hasnt been in a wreck.
I dont think that they're anyworse than a BMW or something.. and its' a great car IMO.
Not a Toyota or "ommmmHondaOmmm" but a nice driving car. ANd a good value.
I think that $11-12K or so is fair retail... where's it priced at? Quattros arent bringing much of a premium here in FL... I bet its originally a Northern car.
The Quattro is at 11,888. Seems like a pretty good deal. Gonna hit a few dealerships in Melbourne tomorrow just to see if I can find anything more to my liking. Otherwise, I think I'll be making that purchase.
As for what their general reliability, I was mainly wondering about how much more expensive are they to have repaired and serviced compared to something like a Dodge or a Honda or a Chevy, etc. One guy I know seems to think it's like 500-1000 for just basic service or tune ups on a car like an Audi. I disagree and would hope he's wrong.
Basically, I'm putting down about 4g on the car and I should be able to pay off the car easy, I just need to know if service or repairs(if/when needed) would put a serious hurt on my wallet.
While roaming Edmunds tonight I read about 200 of the 700+ posts on the "Engine Sludge?" forum (one of the top ten hot topics). It really ought to be renamed "Toyota Engine Sludge?" I've got an 01 ES300 and an 01 Sienna. Golly darn! My question....is the real-world resale market taking this seriously, or is it a tempest in a teapot? Seemed to me the real answer to the question is whether used car buyers are stepping up to the plate. Appears to involve Toyota V6's in the Siennas, Avalons, Camrys, RX300's, and ES300's. Any thoughts?
OK one more Honda accord for you. I have a 1995 accord EX 4cyl auto, sherwood green tan leather cd changer a/c sunroof spoiler aluminum wheels. 80k miles good shape, no major dents, a few door dings. what am i looking at if I traded it in, or retailed? Best part its paid off, and we are looking at a small suv possibly a Santa Fe. We sold a 1991 accord to buy this one, and boy was I surprised at how easy that one was to sell. I could have sold 20 of them in 2 days!! This is in Austin TX. thanks in advance
I have a '99 Stratus 2.4l 4cyl. auto, pw, pl pm, 53k on it slate in color. I have an 0ffer for 7350 (7500 - 159) from carmax and 7000 from Acura. I am quite a bit in the red due to I bought it new and american depreciation However gives me a chance to get from "under" it and a 20% rate and into a vw or acura at 12.95% any help appreciated.
Of course offer tham $10K for it to start But $11,888 aint bad.
If its' the "Customers for life" guys.. be a little careful as they dont really recon their cars too much... So you may want to have Audi check it out first.
$500-1,000 for a service? I can see $500 at the dealer for a big one (30K) but thats true of most any expensive car these days..
Its' one of the few cars that I'll sometimes bury myself in a little to make a deal.
I'd say that wholesale is something like $7,500 or so if its nice. That being said, throw it in the paper for $9950/bo" and watch your phone ring off the hook.
99 Base Stratus? 53K miles? (that's the killer) $7K seems like more than fair if anything. That's about a $6,500 car right now at auction... I'd want to be into it for no more than that myself.
So I'd say you are doing quite well. I understand the negative equity, but saving 7points on interest makes a big difference., If you like the stratus you could also try refinancing at www.peoplefirst.com
I recently sold my 98 Civic EX sedan -- 5 speed, 40k miles. All stock -- no options -- just tinted the windows -- 2 inch crack on corner of rear bumper.
I had 20 calls from dealers offering me $10.5k. Finally sold it to a nice college girl who drove 280 miles from San Luis Obispo to Orange County to shop for a car. $10,750.
The real question for you is -- why would you want to trade in your civic -- high gas mileage, generally trouble free, for those other cars? I realize how bored I was with the car -- but every time I filled up my gas, I look at the pump and tell myself -- It's the wise thing to do.
I was actually only expecting about $6500-7. I have the new loan through Peoplefirst and the car is starting to wear a little. Thanks for the great info. Also what is a fair price for an s60 2.4t auto with the usual goodies.
I have a friend trying to sell his 1999 MB SLK 230. It is silver with Red interior, 15k miles, 5 speed and it's in great shape. He might have heated seats (I'm not sure), but that would be the only option. He's in Denver.
I'd say on the S60... I think you ought to be able to do one for $500 over invoice without much trouble, I'd check the Volvo boards. Volvos are cars thattend to be "shopped" quite hard, so there may be some deals out there. Volvo dealers also get crucified for bad CSI.... so expect a lot of tuckus-kissing
If you go for an S60.. Depending on where you live, there are some options you MUST have. You know, while we're at it, Hertz/and/or Budget rent 2.4ts... I'd drive one for the day to make sure you love it (Which you will, its' a heck of a good car)
I peg wholesale on it at like $30K or so.. so figure like $34K or so is what he needs to shoot for. I'm sure KBB retail is up there in stupidland as always, but that's probably where I'd want to be on it. Buy it for $30K, put it out there for $34,995, take $33,500.
I've got a '96 Explorer XL 4DR 4WD with 80,000 miles on it, Auto Trans, power windows, mirrors, locks, captain chairs, roof rack, AM/FM stereo cassette. Looking to trade it in on a "02 Chevy Trailblazer. Was quoted invoice price on the TB. What is a reasonable Trade in value for Central NY state? I get a range of 7200 out of KBB to 10,000 out of NADA. Was told 3000 by the dealer. Claimed the 4wd wasn't working. However the Ford dealer said there was nothing wrong with it. Apparently the Chevy dealer doesn't understand on demand 4 WD.
I have a 2000 Daewoo Leganza(not Diwah/Daewho etc),I will be in central and south Florida at the end of August.I really like the car and would like to pick up another one. What are the chances of picking up a Nubira CDX wagon with leather -and how much.I'd settle for a leganza CDX . I'd like to pick one up at an auction-what are they going for?I'm rather financially challenged, but I could offer some SC mustard BBQ as compensation for your assistance. Also I'm sure we have some surplus Confederate flags I could throw in.
I'm thinking like $6,500-6,000 range I figure that's roughly . The miles and it being an XL don't help much... but even so.,. $3K is garbage unless it's beat to death.
I didn't see many examples online going through the auction, but Black Book pegs it at roughly $1K back of an XLT (Which is what I had figured) and I'd say, at the moment, $7K-7,500 or so for an XLT like that.
I'd be at $7K or less here in FL for a 4WD XLT but you're in New York where 4WD is good, 2WD bad. Opposite here.
Can't work 4WD.. a dealer in NY... LOLOL!!! Now I've heard it all! Avoid those clowns!
I've been looking at a '00 Land Cruiser with 25,330 miles on the odo. It has the following options:
Chrome wheels Running boards roof rack Sunroof third seat tow package rear spoiler
Of course it has the usual, leather, AWD, AM/FM/6 CD changer...it's loaded! NO diff lock, though. The dealer is asking $43,900. What do you think he paid? What would be a good offering priice. Also, I'll be trading a '97 SR-5 4-Runner with 48,750 miles. It's 2wd, desert dune with the following options:
Leather sunroof wood grain am/fm/CD/cass tow pak gold pak running boards fender flares alloy wheels rear roof spoiler
What's the wholesale and retail on the 4-Runner? I live in the SE.
...... If Tim is getting $14,000 "real money" on the Nissan ..he needs to grab it fast-- somebody has fallen down and hit their head , and he needs to take advantage of it.. l...o..l..
Also get that dealers phone and fax #'s for me ... I gotta couple of Suburbans he will just Love..
........ Your market is quite broad there because of the geographics..where in NC..?
But anyway, the one you are looking at is a little stiff in the miles catogory.. and just about everything is standard in those puppies, and as far as a asking price..it's not really that bad -- what's he got in it ..? how long has he had it..? that's the question.
If he has had it less than let's say, 40 day's -- the used Mgr probably dropped it at $40,000 plus or minus a few hundred because of the miles -- after service, recon, (Certified..?) etc.. he is probably with "pack" about $41,000/$41,500ish and they do have to make a profit...So, lets say start at $42,500 and get a reaction ..in a nice way
Now on your side of the Atlantic -- the SR5's are great vehicles and popular ( and a 2 WD ..? ) in NC -- miles are ok, if it's as clean as the vehicle you are trying to buy -- you are in and around a $11,000/$11,500 figure ..
Learned Friends, I'm looking to drop a '98 Chevy Prizm, blue, 5spd, 24k mi. with AC and aftermarket CD and nothing else. This is in central Michigan, and I'm gonna guess trade-in would be at $5.5k-$6k, and I can sell it on the street at a little under $7k. (More if gas goes back up to $2). It's clean but not showroom new... Am I close on the value? FWIW, Prizms are a great deal new OR used... I paid $9400 for mine brand new, and NO problems.
Now for the difficult one: There are a couple '99 Villagers at dealerships a couple counties over with 98k on the clock... I don't drive much -- see mileage above, and I could live with the high miles if the price is right. The asking prices are $11-12k, and these things are well equipped; dual air, remote entry, but no leather or sunroof. Anyway, I'm thinking of offering $9k or a few hundred more... I don't think Mr. Dealerman wants to go to the auction with a 100k car. I suspect the only way to find out is to offer money and see what happens, but what might an oddball like that bring at the auction? Also, I won't worry about financing... I'll try to pay with credit card, or pay cash if I have to.
Just for laughs, there is also a 99k mile '98 Villager (3 doors, old model) where the asking $$ is $8k... amazing. It's an Infiniti dealer who does NOT have customers for Mercury minvans... what a business!
Thanks in advance -- esp. to Bill and Terry for the great insights they provide!
Checking for a friend who is looking to buy a 1996 Honda Civic HX 5-speed transmission silver with dark grey interior and rear spoiler. Overall it is a pretty clean car with no apparent signs of an accident. A few dings on the passenger side door and a pretty deep scratch going along the passenger side as well. How much should he pay private owner here in Atlanta?
........ Didn't see any -V6- anywhere in his description ---- ? Do I need to get my prescription in my glasses changed again -- ? see what happens when you turn 40 ..oh well ......I caught the SR5 part. l...o...l... --- But anyway if that is correct, the $15,000ish number is correct.
......... Well it looks like we are meeting a lot here l..o..l..
If you can snag a 2000 I30 with the roof, and the low miles for $23,000..that seems like a very fair price..
Also some food for thought -- Also try a loaded up Maxima SE or GLE --- Same vehicle, minus some of the expensive popcorn, and most of the prices are under $20,000 --- and on the overall, the demand is much more at trade time.
....... So you have a Toyota..errrr, a Chevy Prizm.. with a "meat cleaver" huh..?
So, basically it's a Toyota Corolla VE -- and it has no miles. Well you know, how fond I am of 5 speeds but with that Corolla type, there is a market for it. This vehicle -- if it's clean, and needs -- 0 -- it would do a strong $6,000+ at the auctions --- I wouldn't be shy with this vehicle in the retail end ..I feel you could do a close $7,500 streetside...
Now, what about the other 98K stuff you are lookin' at ... Villagers..? Gee whiz, just spend a few xtra bucks, and get a low mileage one with all the stuff.. 98's with 20/30K Nautica's are only doing around the 13's -- hey, email me "if" you just can't live without it ----

On to the Pathfinder... if that $14K quote was real money, it's a 96, and you have it in writing...
That's a mere $3,000+ over wholesale. Where I think you'd want to sell it. Frankly, I'd say that retailing it for $15Kmight be a stretch...
Shoot, I'd say that if you have to get out of it.. I'm real temptedto say grab the 14K...

Bill
I peg wholesale on it at like $30K or so.. so figure like $34K or so is what he needs to shoot for. I'm sure KBB retail is up there in stupidland as always, but that's probably where I'd want to be on it. Buy it for $30K, put it out there for $34,995, take $33,500.
Bill
Hope this helps!
Bill
Right now $10-11K or so is wholesale on an 00 CDX with like 3-4K miles..
But those cars all sold in Nevada of all places (Lot of em too).
Who knows.. with all the rentals down here, oughta be easy to find one....
Keep posting in here or e-mail me and I can give you an idea of the market.

Chrome wheels
Running boards
roof rack
Sunroof
third seat
tow package
rear spoiler
Of course it has the usual, leather, AWD, AM/FM/6 CD changer...it's loaded! NO diff lock, though.
The dealer is asking $43,900. What do you think he paid? What would be a good offering priice. Also, I'll be trading a '97 SR-5 4-Runner with 48,750 miles. It's 2wd, desert dune with the following options:
Leather
sunroof
wood grain
am/fm/CD/cass
tow pak
gold pak
running boards
fender flares
alloy wheels
rear roof spoiler
What's the wholesale and retail on the 4-Runner? I live in the SE.
Thanks!!!
Also get that dealers phone and fax #'s for me ... I gotta couple of Suburbans he will just Love..

But anyway, the one you are looking at is a little stiff in the miles catogory.. and just about everything is standard in those puppies, and as far as a asking price..it's not really that bad -- what's he got in it ..? how long has he had it..? that's the question.
If he has had it less than
let's say, 40 day's -- the used Mgr probably dropped it at $40,000 plus or minus a few hundred because of the miles -- after service, recon, (Certified..?) etc.. he is probably with "pack" about $41,000/$41,500ish and they do have to make a profit...So, lets say start at $42,500 and get a reaction ..in a nice way
Now on your side of the Atlantic -- the SR5's are great vehicles and popular ( and a 2 WD ..? ) in NC -- miles are ok, if it's as clean as the vehicle you are trying to buy -- you are in and around a $11,000/$11,500 figure ..
Terry.
I'm looking to drop a '98 Chevy Prizm, blue, 5spd, 24k mi. with AC and aftermarket CD and nothing else.
Thanks in advance -- esp. to Bill and Terry for the great insights they
provide!

$39K is where I'd hit it, but I can easily see $40K if its' nice.
Figure he has $41K or so in it.. shoot for $43K or so, offer $42K.. $44,900 os highish, but at $43,700 or so or under, I say its' a fair price.
Terry. Lemme get this. 97 4Runner SR5, 4-door, V6... right? 48K?
Dude... $10-11K? I think $14,500-15,500. Closer to $15K if its nice without even looking hard..
Gotta run, will respond moreL8R
Bill
But anyway if that is correct, the $15,000ish number is correct.
Terry.
2000 Lanos SX, with a roof and 10K, are in and around that $6,500/$7,000 range.
2000 Nubira's CDX's with leather/roof and 12K are in that $8,000ish zipcode
2000 Leganza's CDX'x roof 8/9/10K and such, are doing in the $10,000ish universe
maybe- or not, this might help --
Terry.
This should help..
Terry.
98's with 20/30K Nautica's are only doing around the 13's -- hey, email me "if" you just can't live without it ----
Terry.
'97/'98 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC. I want the real hot rod version.
'00 Dodge Durango R/T with the 5.9L V8
'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd with the 5.9L V8
It's just fantasy stuff but I'm curious.
A Hot Rod Lincoln? Who're you, Commander Cody?
