Thanks for the advice. My guess is that Carmax is offering a heafty sum since I purchased it from them and also bought the 4 year warranty. I'm rather mixed though...a Nissan dealer near me is offering "$1000 off your best deal". that 1k would cover my negative equity. I could get into a 2001 Maxima SE auto for around 22-23k and 3.9 APR for 60 months. Beats the heck out of my 10.95% Crapmax financing! It's real money! Show me the money!!!
Carmax doesn't offer the best finance but I do think that they give you 3 days or so to shop them around and pay them off without a penalty. Also, manufacturer's offer low rates on their products, currently Mitsu has 1.9% for up to 60 months...nobody can match those kinds of rates on a used car. Carmax goes by whatever the banks are charging and rates are higher on a used car than a new car.
Usually the "$1,000 off your best deal" deals are advertising and once you get in there you are met with so many conditions that it's ridiculous.
BTW it's DAY-WOO like in the Harry Belafonte song in the 50's or 60's.DAAAY-WOOOO come and I wanna go home, one grand ,two grand ,three grand save more much less then Honda out of de door
1998 Black Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 2.0 5spd... 51k miles. Loaded with everything but leather pretty much.
trade and private party retail?
I just bought the car yesterday and I mean it's fine and I love it. But also, buying it means I have no more reason to look at and shop cars.. and I want to. Buying that car was a hell of a lot of fun(first real car purchase) and if I can do it again in the near future. Woohaa, I'm there.
I'm not gonna sink myself in negative equity. My down payment was 3200 and if can go 6 months to a year paying it off, I should be fine on a new one depending on how much mine's worth then. Thanks again.
.......Oooooh, I like those Lincoln LSC's .... and a great buy. Just to give you an idea, clean 98's with 20/30K with the traction control, Alpine, heated seats and all the stuff are rolling around the auctions in the $16/$17,000 -- and like Bill said, $15,000ish with all the miles and dent's racked up... so depending on the dealer you can get a great deal -- or email me, and I will find you one ...
2000 Durango's ..and R/T's are doing in the $21,000 ish figure -- And yes, I do have my glasses on Bill - l...o..l --- 2001 R/T's are doing in the $24,000ish range, that are clean with 7/9K --- and they are plentiful --
The fat daddy 98 "Grands" with, lets say 25k and all the stuff are doing in the 12's ...are we talking retail or wholesale today..? Me, I'm in the wholesale lane ..
Hey Bill/Terry here's another one for you. A lady I work with has a 96 civic dx sedan w/ 74000 miles on it. She's leased it twice (long story, single mother, little cash, etc.) Anyway, second lease is up in one month and she can buy it for $6400 from the leasing company. It's auto, green and in decent condition. She just put several hundred to repair a rear quarter panel dent. It doesn't seem like a bad price to me, and she know's the history of the car. How's that price sound to you guys?
Thanks Marian PS Located in Westchester County, NY
..... Well my friend, if it's a clean WB edition with all the toy's and needed - nothin' - and it being a handshaker, these little buggers still pull strong money --- So, the 51K doesn't really hurt it too bad, -- so in the lanes , this would be floating around the $10ish number..
.... Well the miles are a little stiff and such -- But -- she knows the original owner..and it's a Honda
Have someone try to negotiate with the leasing company to drop the pay-off -- but, if that doesn't work $6,400 is a fair price -- let's say "as described" this Civic, would do about that at the auctions -- so that's fair, for a change ..
......... I loved your answer, that was great ..... now for the rest of the day, I will be walking around singing Daaay - Woooo, DaaaA aAAA aaay - woooo --- ** they will love this at the Marina ... l...o...l...
I looked at the Durango 5.9RTs in MMR (Too lazy to dig up a recap from Ocoee or something)
DOH! The ones they listed were all from April... I remember though (I dont buy Durangos) seeing one sell for kinda dumbish $$ My guess is $22K... weird that no 5.9s are showing up there tho...
Odd..
Bill Off to blow my head off I mean blow off roman candles..
I'm considering buying it...Dealer is asking $18,999 which seems outrageous. So i'm trying to see what they might have in it and what I might be able to get it for. I think Edmunds TMV was $16,700 certified (if I had options right).
To me, $11-12K wholesale... Maroon is an OK color, but i has a roof and lowish miles. So I think that $12K is closer to the mark. Figure $500 in recon.. $500 or so if its' got a certified warranty...
$15K-15,500 is a fair price if it includes a factory certified warranty, has been fully inspected, new tires..brakes..that sorta stuff. If you were looking for a trade figure I'd say that current market on them, wholesale tends to be $11K-11,500 (So maybe if they went out and bought it they paid a tiny bit high an all..still) and to put it in the paper for $13,900-14,900 and see what happens.
I can go and buy a bunch of them for $11-12K...
$18,995 is silly $$. For $18,995 I think you ought to be able to buy a 98 Tahoe LS retail! (Not an LT tho)
I have a friend who has a 2000 Accord ex with leather etc -every option except spoiler and multi cd player. Here is the deal he wants to trade it in on a Hyundai XG 300.His car has 10,000 miles and is a dark silver. The car is mint. What kind of deal can he expect?I told him probably a hosing.T he list on his car was about $25,000.He traded a 1994 DIAMANTE -got $2500 for it.He never has liked the feel of the seats in the ACCORD.
Wait till he can get a used one. Like most Hyundais, they are, I bet, going to have terrible resale value.
Right now used ones are doing mid $17Ks at auction... I dunno what a new one costs. And those seem to have 8K miles or so...
As far as the 2000 Accord EX.. $17,500-18K is where I think its gonna be... I do not (financially) like the idea of going from a Honda to a Hyundai tho..
...on the Maxima. Believe it or not, I think that means I lost the bet - I told her she was being absolutely ridiculous, and clearly she's actually not THAT far off!
What is a fair asking price for my 1999 subaru legacy cutback wagon? I will be selling it to someone I know. It is white, auto, 20,200 miles, very clean, no dents or scratches, cloth nit. and I just installed a 6 disc CD changer. ,still under warranty. Also I am looking for a 98 Toyota 4unner, 5 speed, sunroof, air, etc.. what's a good price from a private owner? say 40,000 miles? Thanks for the help
I'm in the market for another car and I'm trying for a realistic trade-in amount for my car. The details are:
1995 Firebird STD Coupe 120K miles Maroon w/grey cloth interior Auto 3.4L V6 T-tops AC CD/AM/FM
No power windows/locks (ouch).
I'm the original owner and the car is very clean and well maintained. I have a very, very small ding in the right rear quarter panel (from an unthinking kid opening a car door). Other than that, the car looks great.
I'd like to know about trade in of 93'Q with 102530 mile in indy. It has spoiler after market wheels 10 disc cd built in radar in fairly good condition dealer has called it clean. Has a nick here and there on body .
I'd like to get an opinion from you on the above car. Color is Silver, paints in good shape except for some slight damage to the rear bumper. Minor ding on the roof, no other dents/dings. Other than that, no paintwork. Miles are high, about 105K. It's got all the options, leather, moonroof, climate control, etc... 3.8V6/Auto. All service records. Located in Orange County, CA. What can she expect for it, both private sale, and selling it to carmax or another dealer?
Thanks for the very helpful service you're providing here!
..... On this ..it's your decision -- Both prices are very reasonable ..if.. they are very clean, the body is all there, tires are new etc..
A "clean" 98 Accord EX will do $14,000+ at the auctions.. A "clean" 98 Camry LE will do over $11,000 --- So I guess you are in the target price, that's for sure ...
...... Firebird ..huh..? with 120 klicks, well if you have kept it nice and clean -- has all the stuff that looks good, you should want to retail out of this ...
A dealer is going to be in and around a $1,500/$2,000 figure ...
....... If you run into a motivated dealer, you are going to be in and around $800 to $1,200.. Again, a better route for you, would be to retail it ....
I have a 2002 Olds Bravada on order...scheduled to be made week of August 6.
I was going to trade my 1999 Chevy Suburban in on the Olds, but dealer is only offering $19,000 for it (way below NADA and KBB trade-in value; even below loan value). Dealer says it is because it is the "old" body style. I thought Suburbans held their value no matter what.
Suburban is 1999 LS, pretty much loaded (power everything, CD/stereo, rear air, carpeted floormats, etc.). Indigo blue exterior/grey interior. How much is it worth in trade, and how much selling it private party? I am in Houston, Texas area (big Suburban market).
Also, since I am selling Suburban to help pay for my wife's new ride, I need to get rid of her current car. She has a 1998 Olds Intrigue, loaded. It has every option (leather, Bose stereo, CD changer, spoiler, etc.) EXCEPT sunroof and chrome wheels (it has aluminum alloys). Again, what is it worth in trade and private party? Intigue is forest green exterior/grey interior. CARMESS (excuse me, Carmax) only offered us $8500 for the car. WAY below NADA and KBB says it is worth.
Thank you in advance for your assistance in getting fair price quotes for my vehicles...
P.S. Suburban has 26,000 miles on it; Intrigue has 50,000. Sorry for excluding that critical info...
What is fair trade-in value for these cars? I checked out KBB.com, and I don't know if I'm crazy or the Kelly Blue Book is crazy, but I'm pretty sure that those numbers are impossible in the real world.
What is fair private party sale value for these cars? I'm in the Washington, DC area.
I'm dying to buy a 2001.5 Passat GLS, 1.8T, 5 speed, leather, luxury, reflex silver/beige but I don't want to be completely upside down on my payments and I want to keep my monthly payment close to $360 (72 month financing). Is this possible?
The King Kong of SUV's --- it will tow a 37ft Baja like a walk in the park..
But anyway, whats this little deal worth...?
Well that depends..DSL, what's the motor..? and what is it ..? a 1/2 ton ..? 3/4 ton ..?
Ok, let's pretend -- it's a LS 2wd, 1/2 ton, in super shape ...dual air, tow pack ..etc. etc.. hmmmmmm looks like about a $19,000ish rig to me ..
If it's 3/4 ton, it's going to run in and around $19,500/$20,000 ...
And if it's a LT -- just add about 15/1800 bucks .. and if it's a -T diesel add another $1,500 .. ---- So, it seems the dealer is close, depending on whats on it ..
And let's see what "Carsmash" is up to --- Hmmmm, I feel they are a little light - but close- ...if it's a GL with all the stuff maybe this will lean more the 9ish route ...is this a GLS...? let me know --
......It seems you are in great shape in both of them ...!
The 01 EX 4 banger, is doing in and around that $17,500++ figure..and it's partner in your driveway, is doing around $20,000++ "real money" ..Soooo, I would have to think that you are in great shape( to say the least) most people are slammed about $6,000 about this short time into a purchase...
Carmax just offered me $19,500 for a 2001 Accord EX V6 Coupe with 14,000 miles.
Maybe you didn't get what you wanted for your Olds because they just have horrible resale value, which isn't helped by the fact that they are discontinuing Oldsmobile.
About to buy a new vehicle and get rid of white 1996 2wd Explorer XLT. Has CD changer, power seats and tow package as only options. 81,000 Miles. I live in Northeast Texas. Any clue on trad-in or retail?

Good point!
Bill
98 LSC: A nice one with like 40K miles is gonna do like $15K or so if you can find one (Few out there it seems)
00 Durango R/T. A red one with like 15K on it is gonna do something like $24K or so for a nice one (4WD only).
98 JGCL5.9: Figure a nice 40K or so mile one is roughly 16-17K here in the southeast.

Owner sez she'll definitely get 3500-4000 for it. I say she is talking silliness, no matter what options or color it is.
Thoughts?
Thanks ahead of time! (even if I'm way off base)

Sounds like you did well, enjoy the Sienna.. I think you'll like it a LOT better!
Bill
I'm chasing down a 91-92 Maxima for my neighbor.
No shortage of 100-120K mile clean 91-92s in the paper here with fresh trannys for $3K-3,500.
She wants $3,500-4K?
I say $2,995 it. I'd peg that car around $1,500 wholesale....
Bill
Maybe i'll offer em' $15,000 and see what happens. I'd like the truck and am upside down on my trade, but want out of my car (2000 Stratus).
I'm guessing getting them to come down $4000 might not be easy.
Thanks for the info. as always.

Ought to be around $15,000. Thatt's where they seem to be selling in the in the southwest...
So fiugure you put it in the paper for $17,900... see what happens!
Bill
Figure like $20K-20,500 or so now...
Bill
But I seen worse.
95 XJ6 with 75K miles in the paper for 25,900 recently comes to mind..
Bill
So figure.. $19K as a selling price seems fair to me.
Bill
Dealer agreed to edmunds private party i.e 14,300
Also 98 Camry LE, Dealer asking 12,700 (35000miles)
Please suggest. Helping a frined get camry/accord
