A golfer huh..? Gee whiz, me too -- I just really started in the last 10 months ..seriously, ya know, the new clubs, bag, shoes, driving range, pro lessons etc...the only problem that I'm really having is : I drive too many different vehicles and I do have a tendency to ..not only slice, but forget what vehicle the clubs are in. I just had to have them shipped back from Branson Mo. because I left them in a Benz I sold to a friend ..Duh..--..l....o..l... but, I do love this game ---..

Now for the Jeep. It has gotten all the maintenance done at the same place that I have taken the Civic. It has had the recall work done but after reading the Grand Cherokee posting it seems like I got the gem of the bunch. I have never had a problem with the engine(4.0L) or the 4x4 transmition or the brakes. In fact I just got front and back brakes done for the first time at 61k miles for only $239 and that was just pads and turning the rotors since that was all it needed. The Jeep is Champagne color and it is a Laredo with fog lights, am/fm/tape/cd with the 6 speaker system and over head console. I think all the other stuff is stock. The SUV is very clean with no body damage, not even dents. It has had hail damage so I took it in and the insurance paid for all the body to be redone. It is in MINT condition inside and out. The engine runs perfectly and I just got 19.7 mpg on the last tank of gas (only Mobil or Amaco). I have had the fuel injectors cleaned as well and two new tires and will probably get two more new ones if necessary but they are still pretty good in the back.
I hope this helps give a fair price on my vehicles and possible options.

1. Take invoice, subtract holdback, rebates, dealer incentives, etc. (for a brand new model)
2. Take that number and subtract 3000 for each model year, ie..6000 for a 99. This is a safe number for an ordinary car, ie. Jeep Grand Cherokee, Accord, etc
3. For every thousand miles on the car, subtract 150 dollars
4. Subtract reconditioning fees....
OK real world example.....
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6Cyl, F package
New MSRP 34300
Inv approx. 31500
holdback approx 900
Rebate/Lease cash 6750 (23850)
1 model year 3000 (20850)
12000 miles 1800 (19050)
Recon...850 (tires, detail, safety check)
Your car's ACV (actual cash value) 18200
Now I know you are all screaming......but think about it. I would sell that car for 22900 (bottom line) Because it is a used car, I can't give you the rebate or the 1.9 financing. Do the math, the payment is almost the same for a brand new one. Remember, KBB, Black Book and Edmunds are all great references for consumers, but they won't buy your car.
Ok, let me have it.....

Say: Chev Malibu vs Accord vs Altima. The depreciation is severe for Malibu then Altima & lesser with Accord as demand for used Accord in market is way high than Malibu/Altima.
My friend got 2700 REAL money for his 1990 Accord EX with 156K miles !!! DO you think Malibu would even work more than 100K miles ??
Same dealer offered $800 for 96 Taurus with 80K miles !!
OK, one 2000 Civic Si coming up ---- based on your description ( miles are a little stiff ) but, it is a Honda, this little darlin' will pull somewhere in and around $14,000 in the lanes --- so you can try to retail the Honda for around $16,000 and get probably $15,100/$15,300/$15,500 maybe a little more, depending on the day ... try it and see what happens ..
I hope this helps ..
Terry.
Terry.
And no..... don't even think about negotiating hold back
So at least, you will have an idea ..clean, no dings, no dents
2000 Alero's GLS's with 10/12K are running through the auctions in and around the $12,500ish range.. --- one with 40K will catch a dealer in and around $11,000ish
I hope this helps..
Terry.
Ouch! That bad huh? What do you think she could get retail? How much would you ask in the paper?
Thanks!
I would clean it up, make it look like a diamond, have all the history a turn away...and advertise it in the largest paper in your area..use a 3/4 line ad, the small ones don't work..
1993 T Bird, moon roof, loaded, all the books and records, has been pampered since day one, all highway miles, must see, must sell, $2,950..
It could do $2,100 to $2,500+ to the right buyer -who knows-
Try it and see what happens ..
Terry.
Soooo, if it is going in as a trade, you are looking at a figure in or around $17,500/$18,000..
Terry.
I am surprised that you do not believe in the mythical superiority of the Honda.
We were at the local toyota dealership the other day looking at trucks. he found one he liked and negotiated a deal for 8300 dollars and his truck for the new 2001 model. The sticker price on the new truck was $21,511. they gave him 12,000 dollars for his. He went back and filled out all of the paperwork and wrote them a check for the 8300.00 dollars. We were standing around waiting for them to complete the paperwork when the salesman comes over and said there was a problem and that they could not sell the truck for the agreed upon price The salesmanager's boss had come back from the auction and saw how much they had given him for his truck and said that there was no way they could give him 12,000 for his truck. The most he could offer was 9,500. He said that he had a limited V-6 model truck that he could only get 12,300 for at the local auction and that it was alot more truck than my friends. the manager finally offered to sell the new truck for 9,300 dollars and my friends truck. My friend got his check back and we left. Needless to say, this experience left him with a bad view of this dealership. My friend had a better offer at a farther dealership and told this to this guy. The guy said to go buy that truck because it was a good deal.
All the info we could find from the bank, internet, etc says his trade in value on his truck is around 12,000 dollars.
Does this kind of thing happen often? The guy who had appraised his truck had been doing it for awhile. Did a bad day at the auction scare the main guy into not taking the deal? Any responses appretiated.
Today, I was working with a dealer out on Long Island, and I proposed the following numbers. Please tell me where my logic falls apart:
2000 Camaro SS Auto, Leather, T-top, CD
Sticker $29,600
The trade: 2000 Accord EX V6 2dr, Auto, leather, full equipment. Good condition, but definitely not excellent. Bad back bumper, ding in right hand door that is pretty deep. Dealer payoff of the remainder of my 36 month lease is $19,000
I figured:
24,000 for the Camaro cause it is way old news
2,000 for the amount I am upside down
Total:
26,000 plus tax
1,500 tax (about)
27,500 total out the door
The sales manager looked at me like I was high. He was looking for like $27,000 for a TWO YEAR OLD Camaro.
Thoughts??
Thanks - sorry for the long post.
I looked it up against what they're doing at the sale.
Looks to me like I can buy a 50-60K mile one for about $12,500 or so... (More in Denver.. for some stupid reason these 4WD Toyotas seem to go for stupid High $$ in Denver whenever I look at auction results...haha... anyways)
So now we have one with 85,000 miles. Ouch. Double Ouch. High Miles and they hurt it. Not like they'd hurt a Caddy... but still.. (Remember how I said how really high miles do really big damage?)
I think it ought to be a wholesale truck at around $10K-10,500.. But a Truck with miles like that isnt going to get anyone jumping high on it. I wouldnt. Id be conservative.
Sort of like if I had a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 with 275,000 miles on it. Sheesh, its gotta be worth something.. but try moving it! (I know of this car actually).
I honestly can't see $12K though...
If hes at a $9,300 difference... I mean, it seems real good to me (I have no idea where the New Truck ought to be selling) but Im not fond of the way they handled themselves either..
Bill
$24K is perhaps light (Im viewing it as a used car with 0 miles) retail.. but not at all unreasonable.
$27K is. Oh, he has $27K in it? So?
$19-20K wholesale for a 7K mile one.. so MAYBE $22-23K for that one.. so.. $24-25K.
NOT $27K imho.
See my point?
Bill
If they offered you a stupid deal, they ought to honor it, but it sounds like the amateurs wheeling and dealing while the Man was away at the auction. No way to run a railroad, but I understand how he pulled the plug rather than lose money.
Look at the figures this way: Your friend trades his for a 2001, so he buys 3 years and 85k miles for $8300 or $9300. Either way, that's about 10 cents a mile. He did oil changes, probably no repairs, he's out a buck for every 10 miles driven -- it doesn't get a lot cheaper than that, esp. in a 4x4 truck.
That's basically the reason I quit looking at used Toyotas or Hondas a long time ago... They're very good cars, but people are paying for them like they walk on water. So buy 'em new and trade 'em well. BTW, here in Michigan, I doubt there'd be a market for a 5spd 4banger truck. VERY conservative buyers here. But that's a regional thing.
Unless your friend wants to make a point because of the way the dealer behaved, I'd say go for it... he's not their mommy after all.

Thanks for the info. So, I guess I am not totally nuts.
Tell me, in general, what is the thinking on a car like that? What does a dealership do with a 2 year old car that nobody buys - do they sit and wait to make a killing on it at some future date, or do they make a deal to move it off the lot??
I am perplexed by the economics of the car business, it would seem unwise to let that thing sit when there is a buyer at hand.
Thanks,
Ed
Maybe they're waiting until 2045 whenthat car will be a collector's item.
Me? That car would be LONG gone.. I'd take the loss to get rid of it.

The Camaro ( being new ) can only sell for the Net,net...so with all the rebates, incentives and such, will bring it down to around $22,000ish --- you could trade for let's say, a $4,000 difference, plus your taxes, fee's and the pay-off ...
These vehicle's are easy to come buy on the used side, 2000 Convert Z28's with all the stuff and 5/9K, are going through the auctions in and around a $19,500 figure ---- So in my stupid opinion, I think you might be lookin' at some stores that have them on the pre-owned side ....
Perhaps a another reason why the dealer can't discount the vehicle anymore is that somebody has "punched" the delivery time on the Camaro, and it doesn't qualify for the existing programs ( that's what I'm thinkin' )...
Terry.
'99 Dodge Stratus 53k Std equip Auto and pwr w/m/l
I think this is due to the fact that they really wanted to move the car I bought (2001 300M). Which I still think I got for a good deal ($200 over invoice plus 2500 rebate) Thanks guys for all your help.
And those 300Ms are niice
Bill
You might have the deal of the day...
Enjoy..
Terry.
I can tell ya one thing, If I was a UC Mgr at a store there, I wouldnt buy locally!
Maybe I need to buy 4runners in Detroit and ship em to Denver...
Bill
So now it's in the paper for "$7700", and we'll see. Basically, the first offer over $7k buys it.
BTW, I quickly found out that I needed to say the magic words "own outright" before anybody would take me seriously... they must have it up to here with people wanting to get payoff after a year or three...
Thanks to the regulars in this forum for all the great information! -Mathias

98 Accord EX with 34K miles. Certified by Honda.
Powertrain Warranty valid until Feb 2005.
Carfax shows "commercial use" for the car (Registered for commercial use). What does it mean ? Is it safe to assume that it not abused like the rental ones ? The car doesnot have a single ding & no scractes as such.
Friend wants to use it for another year or two, will this commercial use affect resale afetr two years ?
AND what should be fair price for this one ?
I know too many questions..but need to think it over before spending such money on the car.
Generally not something to worry about at all. See, in some states, like NJ, when you lease a car, it shows on the registration that its' registered to the leasing company.
As far as Pricing.. $13,500-14K is current wholesale on that. Add another $1K on top of that for costs... etc.. cert warranty...
$16,500-17K is I think fair retail. Where I'd tell you to sell it on the market.
Hope this helps!
Bill
BTW there was one more 2001 Accord LX on the lot with 12000 miles ? Any suggestion ? Dealer turned down the offer for 16200 !
Any suggestion on the 2001 LX Accord with 12K miles ?
Can you let me know what these are going for at the auctions? My sister is in the market. I want her to get a CPO from Volvo with fairly high miles (25K or so). She only drives 4K miles/yr, so I figure the higher the miles, the less she pays, and she will get back to normal mileage levels in a year or so.
Can you report on both 2000 and 2001 prices?
This is for a purchase in NJ. Bill - Any recommended dealers? Can you possibly help with a fair deal?
Thanks - Damon
Good luck to your friend!
That 2001 is closer to $17K-18K retail. easily from what Im seeing. Again, I have no idea what a new one is worth though.
dd: Damon, S40.. OK. Go with a 2001. 5-speed tranny, and you get the head curtains and a nicer dash and headlights. With Leather and Roof or without?
As far as dealers... go to Montclair Volvo. Speak with Bruce if he's still there, or Bob Tandler. They recon their cars mechanically the right way, and are good people to do business with. They're also very very competitive pricewise.
Bill
Thanks for the info about the model year differences. Since she would be going used, let's go with Leather and SunRoof. What should she look to spend?
And I will send her over to Montclair Volvo, and have her mention you (is that OK). She lives in Wayne, about 15 miles away.
Damon
That's assuming it has like 17K on the clock or so. The higher mile ones dont seem to be running for much less really.
Figure wholesale is like $17,500ish in the northeast, plus transport..recon..etc..
$21Kish... somewhere in that neighborhood is the pull the trigger #.
Use my name if ou wish.. if they remember me haha!
