    Terry, what do you think?

Can I get some advice for the following car in NY eastern Long Island:
    2003 Nissan Frontier S/C Crew Cab Longbed 4x4 (3.3l v6 w/Supercharger).
SC package no leather., Has stock 6 disc in dash cd, stock SC 17 inch wheels, step rails.Bed Liner.. Black/grey seats with Red piping and S/C logos stitched in seatbacks. .
Added Aluminum Grill , Retrax Sliding locking hard tonneau,Custom XM radio dash bracket.(should I include the XM radio?)..Black Westin safari bar. Class 3 Hitch.
    Blue...Just over 30,000 miles.
Also..Am i better off trading with Nissan or with other dealer?...I am guessing nissan can better market a truck like this so may go higher than another dealer.

I am hoping I can get 18 ish out of a trade..Maybe if I negotiate it based on what they are asking used for on the lot(22,000). Ill bring ads...Am I nuts and better off selling it privately? I owe almost 14 to the bank.
As I understand it, in NY the FULL value of my trade will be deducted from the selling price of my new car when computing the sales tax. Tax is 8.75% for me. So I am thinking a trade rather than a sale to ease the tax burden and loan number on a new Maxima.

a little brave...but its easier to get forgiveness than permission. i had an original ACV of $26800, but ate another $700 to put a deal together on a new 2004 vehicle. i think i did right...noone has had anything bad to say so far...lol.

Well, thought I would try this one more time. Please Terry or anyone out there if you could let me know what I should be happy to get for this car:

    East Rutherford, NJ 07073
    2001 Accord EX V6
    Coupe
    3.0L V6 SMPI SOHC 24V/ 4 speed auto
    Front Wheel Drive
    34,312 miles
    Silver
    Interior is excellent (black leather).
Exterior is silver paint is in very good shape.
Car has always been garage parked. One owner bought new.
    The bad:
One dent behind drivers side door - sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't. No paint damage just a dent. Couple marks on the nose (from small stones etc). Rear lower bumper has three small marks/scrapes from bumper parking. Not so obvious but can be seen on close inspection.
Original tires, rotated by dealer on honda suggested schedule/ in good shape.
All maintainence (oil changes/tranny flush/air filter, etc) done through Honda service - again followed schedule set by Honda.
Rear breaks done a month ago.
    Transmission replaced under warrenty.
    All records available.

    No accidents/insurance claims/repaints.

If I were you (and I'm not) I would shove a $1,000 into the guys face soooo fast, that his shoes wouldn't catch-up to his feet til' Tuesday ...

LOL, I'm not into breaking the law, but if I was I would have. He was dead serious too, that's the scary part!

He's got a travel trailer to pick up Monday and is going to do it with my Titan to duplicate the overheating tranny issue. Now I know how that truck is if there's any wind or anything, its a handful when there's a windsail behind it.

I just hope he knows what he's doing or he will be rubber side up before he knows it.......maybe that's his plan I dunno. I do know he hates my truck with a passion, he said he's worked on mine more than anyone's. :lemon:

I think that the Accord owner might be able to spend considerably less than $200-$250 for the windshield fix. I have had 3 chips that were of sufficient size that I had drilled and glued for fear they would crack. Each time it cost $30 at a local auto glass specialist. The oldest one on my 94 Civic was probably done 8 or 9 years ago and the most recent one was done a year or so ago. There has been no cracking or leaking from any of the repairs. The small drill holes aren't very noticeable and you can always file away the repair record to establish that it was done by a reputable outfit. In fact on my car you really have to look past the sandblasted surface of a 12 year old windshield to see them. The key is getting them repaired immediately particularly in the fall and spring when there are much bigger temperature shifts .

jlawrence is right that anyone--particularly a dealer--will be looking closely to discount any damage, but maybe you don't have to replace the entire windshield. However, since your car is much newer there may be an expectation of flawless glass, something unlikely to trouble anyone who might be contemplating buying my Civic. Real experts in this forum may disagree.

I know you love (?) this Titan, but if it were me, I'd be camped out at the dealer (Chevy?) who offered you $25K. It sounds like even a 2 y.o. Chevy P/U or Tahoe might be more reliable. Just my 2 cents......good luck!

On the used side they had nothing I wanted. It has to be at least a 3/4 ton and at least a CC, plus I don't want a long bed truck. Whatever I get I have to live with as our family vehicle. We liked the 2005 3/4 ton Yukon XL, but I couldn't stomach the loss on the Titan, plus the $45k for the new one.

Nah, I'll wait, not in any hurry to up our payment and/or debt load and empty our savings all at the same time. Not with our *new* (very old) skidder sitting winched to a tree on the logging road waiting for us to get a lowboy up there to bring the old girl home and fix her. Got her for a song, but she needs some work, so all our money is pointed to her (1979 Treefarmer C5D).
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
Can't argue with that! And I suppose the Titan has 3 or so years of warranty left.....I just have like NO patience with troublesome vehicles, but that's just me. At least your Nissan dealer sounds responsive--that can make a big difference. I've owned a couple of Lemons before, like a 1990 VW Passat, where not only was the car a nightmare, but so was the dealer.......then it gets REALLY grim. Sounds like your Titan situation overall is a lot better than that......they fix it if it breaks, & they're nice to you, right? And if it gets worse, you can always take Terry's suggestion & pay the Tech, or maybe one of the Sopranos, $1000 to make it disappear :-)

*Nah, I'll wait, not in any hurry to up our payment and/or debt load and empty our savings all at the same time.*

The dealer has been great, I can't really complain. They have tried very very hard to make me happy.

If I could trade the truck with only a $5k loss or so I would, but not an $11k loss, not right now. I've called the BBB Autoline and started a claim, so we'll see where that takes me. Maybe I'll get lucky, but I doubt it.

This is one time I really wish I could get a new truck, if for no other reason than I'm sick of camping out at the Nissan dealer.

Sooooo, to stay on topic, what's a good truck that holds its value and is at least a 3/4 ton??

Not even $1,000 ACV on trade, I'm thinking the dealer will hit it a few hundred back of what he thinks it will do at auction. 157K big ones, lots of repairs and maintenance needed. No dealer will have a home for it as it sits, even the corner and BHPH lots are going to super low ball that one at auction because it simply has too many issues. You are not even going to have an easy time of selling it this time of year (not winter) and gas prices pushing $2.50 a gallon or higher this summer.

Most dealers are not going to offer you much real money for it at all.

Were it mine, I would fix the stuff and keep driving it while taking my time to shop for the best bargain. Plan on keeping it through this next winter and drive it while it is listed for sale next winter. You will do two things. Keep winter miles of you new purchase, have the vehicle fixed and ready for sale during the season that a high miler that AWD that runs good will bring the most dollars. List it for $2,500 during the winter snow and hope for the best.

BTW throw out any book values you might find with 157K on a 97 and needing that much work.

At the very least, they ought to tack extra miles onto your lease for all the service visits...

LOL, yeah I wish, probably 1k or more of those miles are service visit miles, 200 miles round trip each time it has to go in.

    ........... Holy Enchilada's Batman.!! ... I think he's got it ......

In the land of Aaarnold .. we have a 97 Acura CL Prem with 63,000 tiny little miles ... it has the 2.2 4 banger, color is good for the area, miles are loooow and we got the auto thing going on ..... if the service is 110% and it's clean, and we have the cold breeze, the rubber is deep, good stoppers, no paint by numbers, no slash and gash interior, no I backed over the chain link fence at work, no $2.00 car washes and it looks and shows like an 03 ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $4's, might "maybe" get a dealer to wander into the low/mid $5's if it's really nice and it needs -0- ......

Certainly a great vehicle down Retail Rd, especially in your area (if it's as nice as you think it is) .. finish any service, a super job by the Detail Gods, a great 5/6 liner Ad in the San Fran/Oakland paper and: $8,950 *asking* and cut and run at the first $7,9/$8,5 ..... nice Acura's don't last long, properly done this one should sell in about 3 days on the street ... it should see at least $8 ....... the miles save it ......................... :)

    let me know ..........

Another Left Coaster ... it's a 04 Hoooonda Civic Ex, the miles are short, we got the auto thing and color is good for the area ..... if we haven't backed over any dog houses, haven't had any battles at Burger King, you've left the old folks alone at Wal-mart and no weird stuff in the ashtrays - and it's a "4 door" .... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $13's .........

$12,0.? with 6k..?!? .. is this an import dealer.? was he sober.? .. did he have a funny little mustache.? .......... $12.? you need to shop around, dealers in your area are paying $13,5 ALL day long for the twin to yours .. but as long as you see $13,0 you should be fine ............ what's your pay-off.?

    Hiya Terry,
That's seawiz79 of "Double Dipping Dealers" fame; unless it's a different vehicle. If he owes $15 on this Civic, he's only $2 or so out of round, that's not bad, comparatively speaking...

Could be a nice one .. it's an M3Ci, right...? ... the miles are super low, it's "thee" right color, we got the cold pack, tunes and you think it's in Excellent condition .... for starters, you need to know the history, are all the Vin#'s in play, was a fender painted or replaced, was it in the body shop for 2 months while they welded this bad boy back together.?? .... if it's truly a nice one - no paint, no curb burners .. if so, then the dealer probably paid in and around the $31/$32ish figure for it, probably wants $35/$36ish+ to send it down the road .. 15,000 tiny miles, hard to find em' like that ........... whats he asking.??

since Terry floated by, I'll try again.

What could I hope to get (probbly trade, but retail too) for my 2005 Scion tC:

Flint Mica (Charcoal gray), charcoal cloth guts
    5 speed
    6,200 miles
a couple tiny scratches that should buff out, toherwise like nes (since it practically is), garage kept, no runs/hits/errors
everything standard, only options were wheel locks and deluxe mats.

Having brief wild thoughts about getting into something more practical (with 4 doors) and cofortable (I kinda get squished up a bit), and am hoping that they are still hot enough new to be holding value used. I still haven't seen a used one advertised anywhere.

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

Please help....I bought a 2005 Lexus ES 330 with sunroof and 17 in wheels, crystal white with tan leather....had it 3 weeks and it got rearended....has only 1000 miles on it. $4700 damage is being repaired by a auto body shop that specializes in Lexus repairs. The distal frame rail was replaced so the car is considered to have frame damage. Both rear quarter panels, trunk, new bumper and pass side door are being repainted.
    1) What would a realisitic trade in value be for this vehicle?
    2) Would you keep it or just trade it to get another one?
    3) I am filing a diminished value claim with the insurance company....how much less will this car bring as a trade than if it was not hit?

.... **The distal frame rail was replaced so the car is considered to have frame damage** ....

Whatta ya mean it's considered to have frame damage.?!? ... it does.! .... who was the body shop, Attilla the Hun.? .. who's the insurance company, Leak em' Break em' and Bounce em'...??

Let me take a wild guess.! .. you have repair bills that show you've had a portion of the frame super glued back on .. you probably have a Carsmack that shows the accident, it's a Lexus and it will show on the National service computer ~ and if the vehicle ever goes to the auction it Must be declared, or it will bounce back faster than Demarco's ball at the Zurich Classic today, plus it goes on the auctions National computer ..... other than that, everything is going your way .......

BA: (before accident) .. it was probably worth in and around the strong $29/$30ish range "trade side" ..... AA: (after accident) .. if they have Picasso himself doing the paint work, if they have the head of the Steelworkers Union doing the metal work and you can get the new Pope to do a great blessing on it ... then it "might" "maybe" "could" be worth $19/$20 on a good day and with the proper alignment with Mars and Saturn in the wings, just in case ............

Call me silly, call me stupid .. but I would have the claim adjustor down there tomorrow morning at 7:59 AM ...........................

Terry : Sorry for the wording....it does have frame damage. I have to wait for the repairs to be done then the insurance will look at it..If they don't offer me enough I have a lawyer lined up who deals with diminished value. (they wait till the repairs are done as well. I did call the Lexus dealer and they said probably can get $23K for the car but still need to call around for a buyer since they won't sell it. I'm guessing your $19/20 is closer than their 23.
Should I even consider keeping this car or move on? The floor of the trunk was bent, both quarter panels were bent and the rear body panel was replaced. I was at the body shop the other day and they showed me the car in mid-repair....I don;t know much about body repair but it seems like they know what they are doing and they have 15 other Lexus on the lot.

.... ** I did call the Lexus dealer and they said probably can get $23K for the car but still need to call around for a buyer since they won't sell it.** ..

Let me point out 2 little things here ...

1.) the Lexus dealer and they said probably can get $23K for the car ...

Like me, the Lexus dealer doesn't know what it's worth until it's finished - *completely finished* .. that means any overspray, any parts (top and bottom) does the trunk lid look right, what does the color look like in the side panels in the sun, and can it be spotted by a pro from a short distance, etc etc etc.com .. when it's completely finished, will it be an 8 out of 10, will it be a 9, who knows -- whatever the finished product ends up being, it's still has frame damage (repaired) and reported....

    2.) since they won't sell it ....

Of course they won't sell it, no reputable dealer will .. and these guys are probably taking the high ground and "kinda" staying out of it, they would like to sell ya a new car ... even if the Lexus dealer can steal it for 50 cents on the dollar "someone somewhere" is going to have warranty issues, plus they run the very high risk of having someone bringing the vehicle back in 2 months or 2 years because "they forgot" it was a damaged vehicle and the new buyer want's all of their money back, even if they paid waaay less than market, so why bother with it.? ... it's like a bomb with a bad timer, sooner or later, it's going to go off ....

If this is a lease car, then no problem .... if this a purchase, then it's a like the sword of Damaclese hanging over your head when you go to trade or sell it on the street ... if the insurance company is so sure what the value is gonna be, then let them cut you a reader for it ~ Right Now.!

Unfortunately, this is what happens with body shops .. I have a funny feeling when it's all over and done, it's going to be more like $6,5/$7,0+ in repairs and that $4,900 is going to look cheap ......

    In Chi-town ............ Were looking at an 04 S80 T6 premier ..

The miles are tall for the year .. we got the CPO thing going on, color is good for the area, we have the blinders, slider, we have the Disney package and all of the regular stuff that goes with .... if the rubber is deep, the service is better, the history is clean, no curb burners, no Eskimo dogs and no uh oh it's Maaco .... the dealer probably paid in and around the $25ish zipcode, maybe a little more (or less) depending on the condition at trade time ... add a this and a that, drop the CPO in there and it probably hits the table around the super tall $26ish range ............ $28,0 ..?? .... he's not going to retire on this one .. just make sure you pull the service history at the Volvo store and check a Carsmack ...................

just curious, but why the heck would removing the front seats and stereo result in a salvaged title?

is there some kind of odd law at work here or is it possible there is much more to this story than meets the eye?

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

The insurance company totaled for whatever reason hence "Salvage Title". Perhaps the adjuster was in a really generous mood. I'm sure that the pros would concur that a salvage title is a salvage title not matter how little damage there was.

I guess it's kind of like being pregnant - there's no such thing as just being a little bit pregnant.

oh, i totally agree. i'm still curious how removing front seats and stereo equals a salvage, though. Like, for instance, maybe the front seats and stereo were removed because they were waterlogged after sitting at the bottom of a river. ;)

Thinking of buying a Volvo S40, Mazda 3 or a Corolla LE for the wife. I'm just curious which wuld be the best and safest of the 3 considering her liking all 3 after the test drives.
    TIA!

    Hello folks -

I've been looking at Miatas on autotrader and ebay, followed a few though sale, etc but I can't seem to figure out the prices. Obviously, they are sort of a cult car and the blue book goes out the window, but still....

A guy sent me pictures of a '91 with about 75k that was super clean and included a hard top, some mags, a roll bar, but nothing else huge changed. Paint was super, as was interior. He was into the car, as he was a club member and listed it on Miata dot net. Anyway, he got his asking price of over $10k.

Other rougher ones have been going for $4-7 depending.

One that was interesting to me and in retrospect a not so bad deal was a 140k used job with a supercharger that was added by 60's age latest owner, had clean interior, no rips, good tires, a small dent on hood from falling nut but looked great for the miles. Sold for just under $5k.

How does one go from high $4's to 10k for the same year car, just with a hard top (generously at $2k) and lower milage? Is this the "greater fool theory?"

I've been offering some $ for some cars, but I'm impressed at the values these little suckers hold. Have not been close on the ones I've been interested in.

My budget is less than $5k, and I would like to get one with the new AC, so that means a '94. I would have guessed an 11 year old car that wasn't THAT expensive to begin with would not be so high, but I guess supply & demand is working here.

I have an eye on one that is a super low milage '91 (about 20k miles) with a professionally installed turbo and hard top, but the guy wants about $11k for it. Is this insane?

    Any advice folks?

..... ** but it has a salvage title due to the front seats and stereo being removed** ...

Oh yeah, every insurance company writes off every vehicle when they toss the front seats and steals a $500 stereo ..l.o.l.... it's common -- Not.!

    2wd..? 4wd..? V6 -- V8 ...??

They probably forgot to tell ya they had to drag it out of Lake Okeechobee, dry it out for 2 or 3 weeks, put a new motor in it, new slider casings, new wiring .. and lets not forget the front seats and that truly expensive stereo .......

    Hi Terry,
You gave me a number of 4900 asking and take first 3.5/4,500 for my 90 Accord in Post 26053. The ad ran for 7 days before ANYONE called. I got about 5 calls total. Anyway, the first guy liked it and bought it for $4000. Thank you VERY much for your help! :)

    Hi Terry,
I hope you are not too busy with your basket weaving lessons and could give me a quick private party value for my wife's old car.
Located by San Jose, CA (Fremont, CA, where the Tacoma and Corolla are built)
    1990 Honda Accord EX Sedan
    2.2Liter I-4 Automatic
    88,000 miles
    Black Ext/Tan Int.
Power windows/locks, sunroof, AM/FM/Cassette, alloy wheels (no curb rashes).
Michelin tires are about 1/2 worn
New brakes about 20K miles (a few years) ago.
New hoses under hood 20K/few years ago.
The interior is in pretty good condition. It's clean and everything works, no fry invasions.
The exterior is a different story... it's a bit beat up. There is a credit-card sized dent on the front passenger fender and the paint there is cracked. Front bumper looks like it had a few Wal-Mart kisses. The paint is glossy everywhere but there has been a lot of touched up spots (maybe 20, size of dimes).
A number for private party would be great.
    Thank you very much!
    Paul
PS: We bought a 05 Accord EX Sedan in case you are curious

    Tacoma land, huh.? .....

    Good description, thanks .....!

Yep, sounds like a great vehicle for Retail Rd ..... well, I would get with a great detail guy and try to get that "Drive by shooting" look down to a minimum because the color will show everything, the miles are low for the year, the service is kinda okay, we have newer stoppers and round things .. a dealer might drop $1,5/$1,800 because of the low miles, maybe ....

No leaks, cold breeze and everything works.? .. then in the land of Aaarnold, a super nice Ad, a glorious detail, all the service records glued to the dash, $4,900 *asking* and send that dudette south for $3,5/$4,500 .... in your area of the country they don't know what the words "low miles" mean, so it should sell fast if it cleans up nice and shows a good history .......

    Let me know .....

A small japanese econo-car is usually not the way to go if you're really concerned about safety......the Euro brands are usually the safest. I don't know the specific safety ratings of these cars, but you can check for that on the IIHS & NHTSA websites. I'm betting even a 10 or 15 y.o. Volvo would best a new Mazda 3 or Corolla in safety.......you could also consider an Audi A4 AWD for both safety & wet weather traction. BTW the "new" current model Volvo V40/V50 has gotten a lot of good reviews, & I think (?) comes in an AWD model as well.

    Hi, Terry,
I was told to come and ask your opinion about a car I'm consdering buying. The guy in the Legend forum said to make sure to follow the posting guidelines, but I'm having a hard time finding information on that. Can you let me know what it is required?

Thanks, hope to hear from you.

    Hope you are O.K...

The Volvo is probably the safest, crash wise. Get the optional DSTC (why are safety features optional on a Volvo?) stability control, which helps prevent skids. Side airbags are standard. The reviewers seem to like it. The engine is ancient, and a little on the noisy side. It has a four-year 50k warranty, and I think maintenance is included as well.

I believe the Mazda 3 is based on the same platform as the S40. It is probably the most fun for the money. Side airbags are optional, and you can't get stability control. It will probably be more reliable than the Volvo. It's probably most similar to the (her?) Sentra of the cars you've listed.

The Toyota might be a hair more reliable than a Mazda, but this is by far the most boring of the options you listed. In spirit, it's a smaller Camry. Side airbags and stability control are both optional. It may be difficult to find a car equipped with them.

Clean your glasses and computer monitor. Then before you post your new message, right above the title area you will see a listing of suggested information to post what is required for the best bet at a value.

This will be at the bottom of the most recent messages and above the area where you must have posted this message.

    Terry,

Thanks for the reply....Everything seems to have checked out...

Carfax only lists 1 previous owner "Corporate Fleet Vehicle" in Allen Park MI , 09/23/03. Exepmt from Odometer Reporting? Sold at auction on 02/17/05 to selling dealership as a "Manufacturer Vehicle". Retitled and offered for sale as CPO on 03/21/05. Still ok?

What the heck is the Disney Package?
