'99 VW New Beetle GL .. bright blue, 5-speed, A/C, 6-CD changer. Power locks and mirrors. 29K miles. Good condition, new Pirellis at 27K, all maintenance. CO car. No cruise, power windows, alloys or fog lights (that would be the GLS trim level).

    What say all you experts?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Glad to help!

Now, if you told them the car had 39K on it, I'd have a somewhat dim view of it I suppose. If they failed to ask, why volunteer it? :)

I think that it ought to be worth about $14,000 wholesale, $16,500 or so retail...

    Hope this helps!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Well... at least you're honest :)

I think its' about a $4,000 wholesale car if its' otherwise pretty clean and the paintwork is limited to the bumpers..

Those miles, as we both know, slaughter it.

Hey, I know.. put it in the paper for $7,500/bo. Just to see what happens. You may sell it.

    Big Big help! :)

I think that $33,500 or so is the number, but there's not a lot of them out there... A touch more if it was Pearl White (Like $1,000). Hint hint for the SC430....

Indigo doesnt help (Even though I love it), 15K is up there on an 01, but it is an RX300, which is always good, they have great resale value.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Michael,

I think you ought to see about $11,500-12K or so for it. Probably closer to $11,500 methinks.

Could always retail it for $13,900/bo though!

  • carleton1carleton1 Member Posts: 560
That is very close to NADA numbers which are lower than Edmunds or Kelley. Our daughter and son in law will soon need a 2nd vehicle and she wants a DC minivan as she loved her 1988 Plymouth Voyager LE that got totalled just over a year ago when another driver made an illegal left turn and struck the Voyager at left front wheel.
She was not injured in the accident.
  • karz10karz10 Member Posts: 106
Hey Bill, thanks for the advice on asking 9,900/bo in paper etc. (I think that was the number, post is on another page, will go back and look again in a min.)

I'm gonna keep lookin around to compare and talk to a finance guy in SC that said he would help me price it too. If he agrees and I see enough evidence, I may casually start asking 10,400 and see what happens since it is so clean despite mi., but if no calls, I'll prob drop to your 9,900 and reword the add/ph# etc. and go from there. Give me some room to work...

At least I have the luxury of not being in a hurry this time around =) Thanks for your help, I'll let you know what happens, and if I can help anyone on the board somehow, I'll keep ckn in.

thanks for the info. Don't think we will get the white SC. Some how it does not look very good on this particular car. Right now we are waiting for the red/ecru (white interior) or silver/ecru (4 months and counting). Any difference in the resale value down the road for the SC between silver and red? If I sell the Rx myself, Can I expect 35K or so?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
$35K for the RX on a Private sale?

    Yup. Very doable.

Tough to say the actual dollar amts in a few years, maybe $1-2K.. but the Silver will be worth more... But get the color you like!

Thanks Bill for the estimate! I have to admit, I was thinking a little more optimistically but I am realistic about the effect of all those miles on the price.

We may end up selling it privately - we sold my last vehicle (1992 Chevy S-10 with low mileage, manual 5 speed) for our asking price with no advertising. It was a great little truck but we needed a "family car".

    Thanks again!

Any insight on trade in value of a 1999 Dodge Durango? It is an "SLT+", 5.2 V8, 42,000 miles, Silver w/ dark gray leather, power everything, full time 4wd transfer case, In dash CD/Infinity sound, 3rd seat. Located in New England. Any help would be appreciated.

Just curious as to what I should "ask" for my 2000 Tiburon. It is the fully loaded model minus ABS (leather, sunroof, keyless, etc.) It is a 5 speed and silver exterior. Thanks.
  • midtowneastmidtowneast Member Posts: 49
He has a 2001 Nissan Xtera SE with trailer pkg auto and running boards 25K and in NY Long Island area. What's the price? the truck is in excellent condition. Thanks in advance

    Hi-

    Hmm,

If its' Nice, and clean (No damage history..etc..) I think that $16,000-16,500 seems to be the Market on them at the moment.

    Private sale? $18,900/BO it.

The miles and current market conditions arent helping I'm afraid...

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Miles?

    It helps :)

Assuming 15K miles, I'd say Wholesale $10,500 so figure retail in the $12,900/bo Area.

    Hope this helps!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Shoot. 25K on a 2001?

Still, I think somewhere around $17K is wholesale, but even with the miles, I bet if you put it in the paper for $19,900 it'll sell...

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm.

If its' clean, figure $7,500-8K is about what they seem to be running at auction with 48-50K or so on them.

So, that's wholesale, Put it in the Bergen Record? $9,950/bo

    Hope this helps!

    Well..

Sorry to be thge bad guy here :)

But try selling it yourself. I think that percentagewise it pays with that car.

Now, if you have a 2000 Mercedes S500 worth $65-70K and you can get another $4,000? No. At 6% Tax you make out the same with a trade-in credit.

But $2K-3K... Put it in the paper. I think its' VERY much worth the effort when you have a car you can sell for under $10K.

    Bill
  • 3ms3ms Member Posts: 14
You're definitely not the bad guy here - the person who drove it 86,000 miles in 2 years is! :-)

Now if I had the financial capability to own a 2000 Mercedes S500 worth 65K - I wouldn't be worrying about an extra 3-4K!

Seriously though, it looks like a private sell is the way to go. It is a great family car and has definitely proven itself to be a safe car.

    Thanks for all your input.
  • crankcrank Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the info. Those figures are about what I figured. I'm hoping to trade it on an '01 V70XC if I can find one that's not completely loaded. Everything in my area is $40-45,000 because the dealers only stock them loaded. About how long does it take for a special order on a Volvo?
  • midtowneastmidtowneast Member Posts: 49
The price was 2grand less than he got from kbb, he decided to keep it one more year and then upgrade. The miles are form commuting for suffolk county to queens.

Ps. Do you guy know the value of a mint condition black 1978 chevy nova.
  • hobbzillahobbzilla Member Posts: 3
It is a 2000 5spd silver tibby with 18,800 miles and option 3?? (leather/cd/sunroof package) plus keyless w/security system. Of course floormats, mudguards, & spoiler too. Any suggestions (or buyers for that matter!)? For sale web page

Have you checked out Hemmings Motor News and the Old Car Trader? Those are usually two of the best places to find out what the market price is on an older car.

Most new car dealers won't want a car that old and will put a next-to-nothing number on it since they'll have to wholesale it. Better off putting the car in front of an audience that wants a car like that.

Here's a sad one (sorta): My neighbor had a '87 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe. It was one of those limited edition cars with a special fastback design created for NASCAR homologation. He was the original owner. Anyway, over the years he just drove it and did the basics to keep it going but certainly didn't baby it. It looked like a car with 80K and 14 years on it. But it was complete and solid and original.

He was having tranny problems and had a hack joint throw in a rebuilt unit. The install caused other problems and he started losing his patience with it. For awhile he just parked it outside his apt. and didn't touch it. Last week he tried to get it running, got ticked off at it (again) and sold it to a buddy for $500.

This was not a bad car, just needed some TLC. Heck, I could have sold the body for $500. To the right buyer it was worth maybe $2000-2500. But $500? Man, I just hate seeing someone leave 2 grand on the table. What a shame......

Hi Bill: remember me back in the 'friday freeway chat room' on buying the '01 Lex IS300 ? Anyways, I went out yesterday and test drove one. It drove real nice and I loved it right away. My problem is this:

The dealer says he will drop ca. 3K off list, to a final price of $31,650 on a brand spanking new '01. He has a large volume and needs to move these puppies off his lot.

What do you think of this price ? Should I wait till September when the '02 are due in before trying for an '01 ?

Truly appreciate your help on this... and many thanks for a great job you are doing on this forum.

I will be parting with a 1967 Merc. Cougar. 289 V8 with the "super" cams but the standard 2bbl carb& manifold. Custom dual exhaust. 136,000 miles - orig engine and auto tranny. Everything works 'cept for the left side sequential turn indicator. New American Racing 15' wheels and tires. No body work. Needs paint, interior and some suspension work.

What should I ask for this thing in the So Cal market (to sell myself - not trading)?

midtown: Sheesh! THat's a $19-20K car with 10K on it. Miles hurt... :( I have no idea on the Nova Im afraid.

Oac: Check TMV and the IS Boards, Methinks some have done better...

Crank: 12 weeks or so, depending on the time of the year. I would avoid a Base XC tho, you canget badly hurt on resale. An XC has to have leather, roof, CD, power seat at a bare minimum and must also have Cold Weather pkg in the northeast. Otherwise, 3 years down the road, you will lose every penny you saved and then some. Also, Ash Gold, Moondust, Mystic Silver are all good colors for resale.

    Hope this helps!

Ask Mr S you know where.

$4K sounds OK to me, and put the stock wheels back on it methinks..

  • oac3oac3 Member Posts: 373
cannot wade through 100's of posts on the IS site hence my Q to you. But, not to worry though. Edmund's TMV has a $30.5K tag, from an invoice of $29K and change. CarsDirect has it at $30.9K loaded. My guess is that I probably could do ca. $30.5K if I squezze the dealer enough. I can wait, otherwise that 325i is the next best thing to get...

I'm trying to get an idea on the trade-in value and private sale value for my wife's 2000 Subaru Legacy cutback Limited, off white and beige leather, 27,000 miles. Only additional options above Limited's options are a tow hitch and wood (plastic) interior trim (her choice). Car is in excellent shape interior, clean exterior -garaged at home and work (2 parking lot hugs [not kisses - no creases] visible only from the side as a slight wobble in sheet metal, not visible head on; some rock chips on hood [thought about reprinting the hood, should I?] and two repaired chips in front windshield; and road rash on right underside of front bumper. I may have a timing problem as the past few weeks that I checked, limited number of these were advertised in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area, but this week seems like the lease return flood gate has opened with beaucoup 2000 Limiteds from leases showing up in dealer lots

Shopping for a new car, have the above Volvo (limited edition w/prem sound, alloy wheels, suede trim, lether serring wheel) with 56K miles on it. Confused on its value: KBB says about $13.7K, Edmunds $15.7K and NADA $15.6. Why is KBB so low?

Also have been to several dealers I'm consdering doing business with and have been offered $14K and 14.5K though would hope Volvo would offer mor eif I can convince myself the S60 is a good car! Car Max offered $13K - what a joke!

Car is in very good condition, dealer maintained since purchase.

    Thanks!

We own outright a '99-1/2 Rav4L black, 2wd, aftermarket dealer installed leather and 5 chrome wheels (I've yet to see these wheels on *any* other car), 6 cd changer, all power, tinted windows, moonroof, dealer installed alarm and remote keyless entry. Garaged, all recommended service, no noticible dings/damage, still has 15,000/one year left on warranty. It's a head turning Rav. We've had the good fortune of becoming financially able to purchase a Lexus RX300 and have been trying to sell our Rav. We first received trade in values from 2 dealers--$14,000 from one, $13,000 from another. I was insulted. The vehicle cost us $23,000. I've got it listed right now for $18,300.

I'm curious about a couple of things regarding this vehicle--how much does a new design affect the old design's value? Did we price ourselves out of the Rav market by tricking the vehicle out with dealer installed goodies (we wanted them and were extremely happy with the results)?

We have the car at a local weekend Auto Fair this weekend and I thought for sure we'd be getting calls on it. Not a one. It was in the paper for 2 weeks and not one call. I've had interest from people who've seen the vehicle first hand, but no one is calling for a test drive. It's been advertised in differing ways for about a month.

The car can be seen at AutoFairOnline
in the SUV section of Santa Clarita.
I'd appreciate feedback on how to sell this car without giving it away.
What is considered fair depreciation for a perfect Toyota that has been given kid glove treatment? KBB suggest a fair price between private owners is $18,750. Everything is in place for this deal to happen, yet no one is calling. TIA for advice.
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
No, the car has never been in an accident, color is a dark red....
  • bbhatbbhat Member Posts: 6
What is a reasonable trade in for a Mercedes 1995 S500, 85000 miles.
NADA,Edmunda and KBB all differ.Perhaps BrentwoodVolvo could comment.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm..

I dunno to be honest. My guess is, from what I hear, $1,000 or so over invoice ought to be doable. I'd go to the IS thread and scroll to the end then up 20 messages to get the newer ones or maybe ask who paeople are paying in San Diego. Why not offer the dealer $30,500 (Which, in reality, is probably about $1,000 over invoice.. most Lexuses have 1.5% LDA advertising asessed to them) and let them know that you'll buy it then and there for that price.

Certainly can't hurt to try. Southern Cali is supposed to be a really competitive market and all.

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well,

There doesn't seem to be a shortage of them at auctions in the Southwest with similar miles..

A clean one with 27K is worth $15,500-16K or so it seems. Figure if it has a few dings..stone ships..etc.. I think that $15,000-15,500 ought to be your range.

No, do NOT repaint the hood. If I were appraising the car it might make me a bit put off onthe car. Paintwork generally hurts a cars' value. Besides, wont net you any more money I don't think.

    Hope this helps!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
$14K-14,500 is pretty good money for that car actually, if its' clean, about where I'd tell you to try and be.

They're sensitive to color and the region of the country that you're in (Seem to be worth more in the Southeast... RWD car that, much as I like them, is terrible in the snow)

CarMax seems to be calimng down a tad on some of their appraisals.

    Hope this helps!

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
In the northern climates.. the Jeep is $7,500-7K wholesale if nice.

So figure $9K-9,500 private sale, but it is the summer... Try $10,500 and see what happens.

I hope you're not in the Southeast tho... No AC in Florida can be a very bad thing. :O

As far as the Jetta goes... I'm guessing $17K or so... Generally about $2,500-3K or so back of original invoice on a current year car...Depends on the market conditions on new ones. You may want to shop it locally IMO.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmm...

Well, I'm gonna be the bad guy here. Problem is, those acessories, while Im sure look really nice, just don't add much to it 2 years down the road valuewise. You did sort of "overspec" the car as you said I'm afraid. What these options/acessories do enhance, however, is the marketability of the vehicle. As you said, you're now priced out of the RAV4 Market.

What happens is, people looking for RAV4s just aren't looking for vehicles with leather, moonroof, etc.. That's not the RAV4 Buyer.

So what happens is, these options just don't residualize. Much like Roadster tops, chrome wheels, fancy grilles, etc on Lincolns and Caddies, Wire Wheels on Jaguars ($3,000 easily) and the like.

So, to me, its' a 99 RAV4L with 21K miles (I assumed.. you said 15K left on factory warranty) and I assume its' a 4-door. I also assume that its' clean and not in a wacky color like Brown.

So, I think that $14K is wholesale based on what they are doing at auction. Maybe a bit more ($500) but thats' about it I'm afriad.

Private sale? Obviously you, like any seller, want to sell it for as much as possible. I think that fair retail is about $16,500-17K.. somewhere in that range. KBB retail is generally a good deal for the seller, not the buyer. Quite simply, paying KBB retail for a used car is akin, in my experience, to paying MSRP for a Taurus. Bad idea. If you can get it, great! But, it is really the stratosphere of the market...

Hope this helps, even if I'm being the bad guy :(

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Color? Condition? Location?

If its' clean and in a good color, generally $23-24Kish... but there are some real variables out there...

    Bill
  • ravlravl Member Posts: 129
You, you bad guy you! ;) You told me what I thought was the problem. Without finding that *one* person who sees the intrinsic value of the special features, it's still just a Rav4.

We're getting itchy for the RX, so we may just have to down a large loss of equity in the vehicle.

Thank you so much for your feedback here, Mr. brentwoodvolvo. :) I value your take here in this thread and over at the RX300 thread as well.
    You make talking cars fun.
    Regards.
  • ravlravl Member Posts: 129
I've read that you can deduct the trade in value from the new car price before the tax is added on. I was wondering if you can do this in California? Do you have to ask or will they automatically do this? TIA.
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
Bill, appreciate your help! Kind of makes me feel a bit better now.....Volvo dealer told one of the other dealers I was working with that $14.5K was way too high.

On the RX: Pearl White/Ivory has the best resale value while we're at it. Leather, Moonroof and CD are MUST haves. Navigation has virtually $0 resale value.

Thanks for the info. The Wrangler is in Maine so A/C is not a consideration.

I am looking to possibly sell the Jetta. Would a VW dealer do just a buy on a used car? Who would I talk with, the used car mgr or a salesperson?
