godeacs...just checking because color is pretty important when selling a higher-end make. And I know Carmax is very sensitive to any kind of paintwork.
While I am here..what about a 1993 Honda Accord EX 5-speed sedan 138k white over blue one owner..no body damage..clean interior..needs tires. Thanks again.
$3500 brentwood. It seems to be in great shape. I didn't buy that 97 HX Civic because after further inspection it just had way too many service issues (even for $4750). I just need a car to fill in a 3-4 time span until the Acura CL w/ the 6-speed comes out. But I do miss my 01 Accord coupe so I might just save myself $10,000 and get another Accord.
blackcoupe - thanks for the input. The color (red- yet not fireman red) was 1 of a kind. Have never seen a Volvo with that color (actually official name is "corine red"). That's why i bought it - and got many compliments on the color. Yet when I price it on edmunds, they dedut $160 because of it - go figure!
Coral Red perhaps? Umm, then you're really doing well! If its' Regent Red, then its' a good color, but Coral Red, as someone who used to sell Volvos and who still deals in them... its' a color that I avoid at all costs as a rule to be honest. Although it does look nice, its' tough to sell in my experience.
I thought I would share my experience from yesterday evening. My husband and I are trading in a 99 Rav4 at what I consider a great loss of value. When the salesman came out to write up the prospectus for my car, the GM was standing by another car and I got to see him have my car catch his eye. He even commented that they wanted my car on their lot. With its chrome wheels, this would be the vehicle that would make that strip of hilly grass in front of all the other wannabes. I *know* my car has value to their lot. Yet, they originally come back with $500 less than the same time last month..."book change". I got them to split the difference so I'm down $250. here.
On to the RX300 purchase. It's a Silversport with spoiler, chrome wheels and PIO options of $100. I originally said "I'll buy it for $500. over invoice." Realizing I had better clarify as these words can be sketchy, I reiterated that I was willing to pay $34,600, a figure that can't really be 'changed' like '500 over invoice' can.
They bring back the paper with figures on it. Their fuzzy math, which looked questionable, ended up being questionable by over $800. Their invoice price, gleaned from their inventory list, not an actual invoice for that vehicle, was off by $423. The 'fees' that I had him break down for me (they weren't broken down on the first set of numbers) were off by $408. Even the tax figured on the price of the vehicle (adding up the costs that they wrote on the paper) was incorrect.
Thank goodness I decided to come home and mull over the figures as yesterday, I knew we were off around $450 from the original deal I wanted to make. After refiguring and crunching, I have concluded that their offer of $38,832 'out the door' shall be countered with $38,000 'out the door'. The difference in the 'hidden' charges because of some fuzzy math was $831.
I hope this kind of hardballing by me will not tarnish the service quality I receive from them. I *know* they need the business as the MDX, Sequoia and Highlander are the vehicles dujour. Plus, I know how much money they stand to make off of my killer trade in.
I guess the point of my blabber here is if you think there's some fuzzy math, go home and rework your numbers, or be sure to bring a calculator with you to the proceedings. The best part is, if they refuse my offer of $38,000. out the door, I drive away in a killer black Rav with all the trimmin's...6cd, leather, chromes...woe is me.
Just curious. Virtually all Lexus dealers are charged for advertising, it appears on their invoices. If its' on the factory Lexus Invoice, then its' legit and real. It will say "LDA" towards the bottom right of the invoice (Where its' totalled up). There's a space for it, it'll either be blank or be an amount that's generally 1-1.5% of the trucks' total MSRP.
Hi Bill, Thanks for the info about the advertising fee. I was going to ask them today if that was the reason their invoice figure and the one I composed from the internet were off. What it doesn't explain is how the tax amount and total fee amount don't add up correctly.
One thing I've learned from this whole process is it's much easier when you talk 'out the door'.
Thank you so much for all your help with this. Your note about the Nav system didn't go unnoticed either. We had debated that feature as you had to take heated seats and HID headlamps in the deal. Since the vehicle will primarily be mine, I don't need navigation. My dad taught me a great sense of direction. And this whole Rav deal has taught me to get a vehicle that's in the middle somewhere. It definitely does NOT pay to trick a vehicle out when it comes time to trade. Regards.
That's my guess... Here in FL... LDA on a FWD RX300 is roughly $400-450 or so, so thats what I am guessing at. It does vary from time to time and market to market. I'm sure that Lexus of Fargo, ND pays $0 for advertising!
Hmm... HIDs are really really nice.. but Heated Seats in Southern California? (I know.. they come in a package... which is asinine since about the only places anybody can even find a FWD RX300 would be in the sunbelt...)
Taxes? Not sure about Taxes/DMV Fees in Cali... Know you do get a trade-in sales tax credit tho.
Bill, the paperwork says "Corine Red Metallic" but probably "coral red". Geez, I thought it was a great color, a lot better than a "fire engine red". Have never seen another Volvo like it. *scratching my head*...why is so tough to sell? I just got tired of grey and silver Volvos...as I mentioned, have gotten many compliments on the color. Oh well, live and learn - think I'll go with grey or silver on the new car......but NOT a Volvo....another story....
Bill - someone pointed me to this discussion to get your opinion. Situation: potential first time Saab buyer, ogling a '99 9-5 SE (6 cyl) with only 12K on it. Great fun to test drive. Dealer asking 27K; with financing and moderate down payment, monthly cost will be around 400. However, noticing that new '01 9-5 SE's lease for about 430 -- thus, bottom line question: lease new, or buy a 99? How much depreciation should be expected from a '99 9-5? Where might the '01 be in say five months? Many thanks...Kerryman
I am trying to trade in my 1997 Range Rover 4.6HSE in British Racing Green with 70K miles for a Toyota 4Runner. They are offering me 17,500 for the trade-in. Kelly Blue Book says 21,500. Am I getting ripped off here? What should I expect?
99 Mits Montero Sport XLS 4x4, black (actually Black/Sudan Beige two tone), 65Kmi, new tires & brakes. Interior is is excellent shape as I am obsessive about cleaning, detailing right down to the vents, engine compartment and the inside door jams i.e., no dust dirt, etc. Could eat off the engine. Exterior is also good with standard wear and tear i.e., small chips on the hood from highway driving, a couple of dings on the doors from parking lot scars and the rear bumper is a bit scratched from removing/loading materials into the truck. Other than that no dents or major scratches.
I've been very good about washing & waxing. Always hand wash so there are no swirl marks in the blk paint.
I know the value of these has decreased but I'm just curious how much. I think its a great LOOKING truck but PERFORMANCE is a diffent matter. Recent poor safety ratings have probably taken their toll on resale value. BTW, I live in New England where a 4WD vehicle is desirabe. Thanks.
Hi! Would like your opinion on real world trade-in and private sale amounts for my 328i. The car is located in the Chicago area. 1999 BMW 328i 26,500 miles Excellent condition Titanium Silver Metallic Leather Auto Trans. Fold-Down rear seats Heated Frt. seats Xenon CD player Harmon Kardon stereo Premium Package Sport Package MSRP new = $42,345 Two dealers recently offered me $27K. I expected more. Your thoughts? Would this car be worth more in a different part of the country? If so, where? Thanks for your service!
I have a 96 grand cherokee laredo with the 26f option, infiniti sound, auto dimming mirrors, power seats and 86,700 miles. KBB gave a trade in value of $7,350.Edmunds and NADA were about $9,400. One dealer used the "Galves" book to give me a trade in value of $6,500 for my Jeep. What is the actual trade in value? I know the dealer is going to lowball me, but how much is he doing it by?
If its free of paintwork and nice... I'd say $20K is what you need to get out of it. They have gotten, if anything, pricier over the last month or two and its' a car that someone will step up on.
You're not gonna like what I have to say... $6,500 to $7,000 is about what they are selling for wholesale at the moment. KBB was within reason on this one (They generally seem to be about 10-15% over what the cars are selling for at auction).
Reason I use auction figures is.. well... that's what they are selling for on the wholesale level, ergo, that's the market on them. Remember, SUVs are starting to take a real beating here of late.
The miles are what is hurting you here. Have you tried throwing it in the paper for $9K-9,500 and see what happens?
Wondering about the true wholesale value for a 2001 Acura CL Type S, nav + rear spoiler, 10k miles. It's really too new to find any info now. I am in the Bay Area (SF, CA).
I'm asking because I have fallen in love. No, not with a girl, but with the Boxster S. So I'm crunching numbers to figure out what this new love affair might cost me. First thing is getting out of my Acura lease, which is only 1 yr old!!
Hmm.. I dont see that very many have sold... It is a 2001
I think its' a $24-25K car wholesale from the looks of things. If I had to be held to a number I'd say $25K.
What I generally tell people with very late model cars is to contact a few localdealers and see if they are interested in the car. If so, have them appraise it and shop it a bit.
I only saw results for 2 selling wholesale recently. One in NJ and one in FL... Cali market for Japanese cars is usually quite strong though, and it is a desireable car. Just be thankful there isn't a $3K rebate on the new ones!
Now I can see how much greater my 99 GC SE has depreciated than the 99 Ody LX would have if we had purchased the one we had ordered. Although we have really enjoyed the GC SE, Bill's honest data indicates that the Odyssey retains value very well. If we keep it forever or give it to a daughter, the GC SE will have cost us $1025 LESS in depreciation than the Ody would have. If people plan to trade every 2 or 3 years, the Odyssey is a better purchase if one is looking at depreciation alone. Reliability is a NON-issue as our GC SE has had zero problems. I imagine the Odyssey would have also had zero problems. The Dodge dealer is just over 1 mile from our home and has provided outstanding routine oil and oil filter changes, safety and emissions checks. The Honda dealer is much less conveniently located for us.
I'm trading in my dark blue MR-2, 1988 with 110K miles. T-top, turbo automatic, cloth seats. I am the original owner. Gets 32 city, 37 highway mpg.
The only problem with it is that the motor for the radio antenna does no longer raises it all the way. Is a malfunctioning the radio antenna motor enough to get the car rated 'fair' or 'good' in the KBB guidelines?
when shopping my Acura around to the regional dealers, should I simply call up the sales manager and describe the car, etc? Or would I have better luck with another person responsible for buying cars at the dealer level?
Also, my timing is flexible. Recall the Acura is a 2001 model I purchased in August 2000. If I were to sell in the next 6 months, is there a better or worse time, based on your experience?
Comments
Heck, if I was In Maine I'd be e-mailing you my # right now!
But do shop it around a bit...
Bill
While I am here..what about a 1993 Honda Accord EX 5-speed sedan 138k white over blue one owner..no body damage..clean interior..needs tires. Thanks again.
What can you get it for?
Bill
Call em up, ask for the UC Mgr, tell em you have a car to sell... Describe it, if they're interested they will want to see it of course....
But get a few bids!
Bill
What's your estimate on reasonable trade-in for a 2001 Acura 3.2 CL-S, black on black, 23K miles and excellent condition? I'm in middle Georgia.
Thanks
Write the check. that's what its' worth as a trade-in!
Bill
Ones with miles like that seem to be selling in the $22-23K range wholesale...
Hope this helps!
Bill

I always liked it on the cars, but it was just always tough to shift... A lot of people say it looks like a Pink...
But some people loved it!
Bill
Right now if you lease a new SAAB you're paying next to nothing in finance charges, there's like $5K or so of incentive $$ on a leased vehicle..etc...
Also SAABs dont necessarially age well repair-cost-wise and have terrifying depreciation.
Nice car tho!
Bill
$21,500 is what a 97 4.6 HSE with 55K or so on it is worth at the auctions right now I'm afraid..
Bill
If its free of paintwork and nice... I'd say $20K is what you need to get out of it. They have gotten, if anything, pricier over the last month or two and its' a car that someone will step up on.

Alls I can find is a 56K mile one that did $13,400 or so...
With 66K miles on a 99? Shoot for $12,500-12K
Miles are killing it I'm afraid
Bill
It DOES Have a Sunroof, right? (Crossing fingers as I type.. you did say prem pkg).
If not, $27K is strong, if it does.. $28K is closer to the mark IMHO. Its' silver..loaded..etc...
Put it in the paper for $32,500 though...
Bill
I assume Northeast so its' a 4WD, right?
Any paintwork? Color?
Big diff between 6cyl 2WD and 4WD V8
Thanks!
Bill
Where ya located?

What do you suggest I offer for the following vehicle, being sold by a private party:
2000 Maxima SE
Black w/ Gray Leather
5 spd tranny
Loaded w/ all options
39000 Miles
Clean w/ no accidents
In New York State
Thanks!
Bill
Hope this helps!
Bill
On a wholesale level... Unless its' something special, has a blue-and-white propellor, 3-pointed star, or Porsche Crest onthe end of the hood...
It isn't worth too much.
Maybe $1K if that. HOWEVER! If its' clean, I dont see why you dont sell it privately. You gotta be able to sell it for $2,900 or so....
Bill
They're generally the ones who buy cars.
Bill
ummm... Do I have to be the bad guy again? I hit the car at $18K-18,500. The miles are the big killer here.
$22,900 if you go private sale to ask... Take $21K or better...
Bill
