I would not, retail, pay more than $17,500-18K or so for it.
What I would do is find one with 18K or so for $20-21K or so...
Bill
I think that $5K ought to be doable for your car but $4,500 isn't that far off the mark. Galves is a book used mainly in the northeast and is generally quite accurate in respect to market conditions. Its' actually printed by a large wholesale dealer.
And from the looks of things, if that's a Standard 3.2TL.. Isnt that like $500 off of sticker? I seem to remember reading that a few people have beaten that price...
Bill
I figure that it's about a $4,000-4,500 or so wholesale unit. I'd then deduct for the airbag light (I'm guessing a sensor? $200-300?) and about $300 for a set of tires.
That being said, put it in the paper for $6,950 and see what happens. I think that $5,500-6K is reasonable.
Hope this helps!

Son-in-law and daughter looking at 98 Avalon XL w/24000k. Toyota Certifed car at local dealer. Dark green, very, very clean..all options except it has a cloth interior. Asking price 18,995. What should they expect on trade for 95 Civic DX Coupe, red, 5 speed, air, CD, 106k. Nice car considering 106k, but needs one hubcap. Cleveland, Ohio area. Thanks in advance. As a former used car dealer with my father (been out for 16 years) I really enjoy your comments. You seem fair and honest..something the business really needs! A lot of the past car dealer reputation problem was created and earned by the dealers themselves, as I'm sure you will agree.
1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Short Bed Pick up. 5.2 L V-8, 5 Speed, A/C, Cassette, Anti-Lock brakes, Split Cloth bench seat, bright red, 27,000 miles, near perfect condition, 4x2 in southern CA? How much could I retail it for if I sold it on my own and how much would a dealer give me?
Thanks
You had the prescence of mind to get out!
I agree, I wish that a good 50% of the dealers out there sorta got swallowed up... anyways...
The Avalon. Its' about a $14-14,500 car wholesale. Figure typical realistic retail is like $16;16,500 or so. But if its' certified, that's another 500-750 at least (If its Toyota Certified). So I think that $17,000 or therabouts is reasonable. $18,995 seems kinda high...
The Honda? Well, we both know about the miles thing... From looking at the market... $3,500 or so looks like wholesale on it. I'd put it in the paper for $5,900 myself though, I bet it sells easily. Cheapish Civics are great retail merchandise...
Hope this helps!
Bill
If its' a base base, Looks like about $9,500-10K or so is wholesale, and retail is, say.. I'd ask $12,900 for it and see where that gets ya.
Bill
I already put an ad for $2500 but no calls so far (been a few days). I see its wholesale values at NADA, Edmunds, and KBB are around 1800 or so.
The last thing, if I decide to sell it to a dealer, would I get a better chance going to an Audi dealer than a regular used-car lot? Or does it even matter? Thanks a lot in advance.
John
Or, $9,950 yourself....
Bill
As far as dealers, I'd try independent used car lots, those who specialize in inexpensive transportation..etc... I'd doubt that an Audi dealer has a market for older cars to be honest.
Have you tried ebaymotors.com?
Bill
I dont really know where tohit this car. My guess is about 3,500 back of current market on new ones.
I'd shop it to a bunch of Acura dealers if I were you. Call and ask for the Used Car Mgr. Someone is gonna want that car...
Bill
4cyl or V6?
And I assume 2WD, right?
Thanks!
Bill
Thanks for all the help. You're definitely an asset to this board. How would you price a 1992 Acura Legend L with cloth? It has 98K miles on it, but remain in true immaculate condition. I love that car, and took very good care of it. And of course, the Acura is reliable and runs like new. I'm now moving on to a new Lexus LS. What range should I expect? It's in Rosewood Brown (Purplish). Thank you.
I have a perfect 1996 Honda EX (4-cyl) with 49000 miles. I purchased this car new and it still looks new. What is a fair price, considering if I trade for a new VW Passat I will try for the best price and pay cash for the difference. Thanks. John
John
Personally, I think that the car is worth about $5,500-6K or about 500-$1,000 back of where I'd normally hit that car. Lack of leather and purpleish brown color hurt it I'm afraid.
Why not try a Private sale? Try $8,900, you might be surprised...
Bill
That's a car that you can easily get $11-11,500 for privately I think (Honda Accords dont have a huge retail-to-wholesale spread like some other cars) but it will be a very easy sale I should think. There's always a strong demand for nice Accords.
Gotta love Hondas. 50% after 5 years! (Buicks lose that in 18 months!)
Bill
In the Southwest, they seem to be worth the most from what I am seeing. Looks like about a $7,500-8,000 truck to me.
Where did KBB hit it??
Hope this helps!
Bill
John
Anyway, I still haven't bought a vehicle and I'm on the hunt again. There is a '99 3.2 TL at a dealer here in Jersey. Its blue and its got 73,000 miles. Where do you hit this? The miles are, of course, high, but Edmunds still prices it at $21K. The dealer has it listed on the internet for $16,900. Should that scare me? I looked at it this evening (sunday and the dealer is closed) and there is no visible damage or anything. Is that a realistic price and Edmund's is just way off?
as always, thanks.

Quite unlike them, in my experience they're generally quite high. $9,200 is about $500 or so high of the mark typically.. Uhh, I didnt want to say it but if its' that copper color... it hurts, and the results I saw reflected that.
A suggestion?
Good luck!
Bill
I went and looked in my little auction program... 65Kish mile ones seem to be doing like $17K +/- $500 or so at auction...
$16,900? Haggle of course but pull the trigger, in reality, $19-20K or so is fair retail. As you know, it does have an "intergalactic clock" so that hurts it a bit. If it were yours I'd say to shoot for $16K or so trade-in.
But it is cheaper than fair, I say its a deal, maybe they got lucky and stole it.. who knows. But I'd carfax it and... follow my paintwork link:
http://www.vauxhallpa.50megs.com/paintwork.html
Make sure it hasnt been smashed to hell...
Bill
Another question, though, if ya can. How much do the miles hurt these? My big problem with getting a car with 73K miles is that, in 5 years, when I finish paying it off, I'm going to have almost 200,000 miles on it! It will virtually be a worthless car at that point. But, i guess i should just figure that I got my use out of it and be done with it and start over again.

Golden Pearl (Pearl White) with Ivory leather is worth a solid $2,000 more than Antique Bronze...
Bill
Take it for a good test drive. Make sure that you will be happy living with the car for 5 years!
Still, dont compromiuse...
Bill
We just bought a new Chrysler T&C. We have to sell either of 2 cars. Car 1 is 1998 Honda Accord LX auto with 63K miles. Car is heather silver with cloth. Car 2 is 1999 Honda Accord EX v6 with leather. Car 2 has 57K miles and is dark green in color. Both non smoking in good shape. What is a good asking/take price for these for private sale in Memphis, TN area?
Thanks,
Scott

According to a manager-friend we have at the dealership, this vehicle was purchased new for $28K, and was just traded last weekend. He says we could get it now for around $24K. Seem fair to you? How much do you suppose they've got in it?
Thanks in advance!
Your thoughts would be appreciated on the respective trade and retail value of a '95 Millenia L in excellent mechanical condition and very good body/interior condition. i.e. no food ever allowed in car and regularly detailed. Mileage only 37k. From what I'm seeing so far, trade is not the way to go with this car.
On to the 98. Silver is good, 63K on a 98 isnt as bad as 57K on a 99 but it also hurts it a bit. Still, I think that you ought to be able to get $9,500-10K or so wholesale. So ask $12,900 and I wouldnt take under $11,500 or so.
As a private seller I'd stress condition and highway miles (i.e. I have a 40 mile each wayt commute..) and also you'llhave these priced below most of the other ones on the market..
Hope this helps!
Bill
Hmm, Here in Florida (Where 70% of all 2WD RX300s are sold) its' a $26,000-26,500 or so vehicle on a wholesale level as you describe it. However, you're in CO with a FWD... I still wouldnt take less than $25,500. You may want to consider a private sale around $30K or so. KBB "retail" (haha) on your truck is like $33K...
Silver is good btw
Bill
I'd say $7K.. you'll be at the top of the wholesale market buyt a 95 Millenia is only worth so much.,. you know?
I'd be gutsy. Advertise it like this:
"1995 Mazda Millenia L. ABsolutely immaculate condition, One Owner, never eaten or smoked in. Probably the cleanest one out there. Only 37,000 pampered miles, flawless throughout. Must see this gorgeous car! Only $12,900 Call Tommy 407-123-4567"
On the retail side I'd shoot for $10K-10,500 but that car couldbreak the bank to the right buyer...Remember one thing about price: "you can always come down"
Bill
I'd try to be around $22-23K or so.
Bill
Toyota dealer wouldn't budge from $23K. He said he called 2 dealers in Arizona and the highest bid he got was $22.5K. Of course, he also said that in 7 years he had never taken an offer to the desk without a deposit.
I'm going to check the Mercury dealer tonight.

Very clean, but a few too many scratches and dings to rate "excellent". Is it worth it to do the bodywork myself pre-sale/trade, or to settle for a lower offer?
