Detroit ...? .. isn't this the same place that the Seahawks "forgot" to show up to play in the Superbowl ..l.o.l...
.. the color is good anywhere, the rubber is weak, it's a base GXE with a power seat, auto and the miles are loooow for the year ..... there is no such thing as "excellent" unless your friend is driving an 05 E500 with 2,700 miles on it .... if it's nice, it's clean, he didn't park next to the revolving doors at Dicks Sporting Goods, no secret visits to Maaco and the service is 110% .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $6's low/mid $7's .......
This is a superb vehicle down Retail Rd .. grab some rubber, finish any service, get with the gods of detail, shoot some great pics, drop a nice 4/5 liner Ad in the Big paper and: $9,950 *asking* and kick and cry at $8,9/$9,5 - but take it ...... these are still very popular, properly done it won't last long.
Don't forget to let me know ......
Terry.
The insurance company says they're planning to total my 2004 Acura MDX Touring w/ Nav as a result of an accident. Details are below. Interested in retail value as that's what they should be basing their payment on. Thanks!
Location: Albany, NY
Year/Make/Model: 2004 Acura MDX Touring
Body Style: 5 door
Engine: 3.5L 6 cyl.
Driveline: AWD

Major Options: Nav
Condition: Clean, same tires as when purchased new, regular oil changes and minor maintenance, good brakes.
Other: No parking lot dings or other damage
You helped me out a while back and I'm looking again at both a used chevy suburban and a new suburban. I'm not sure if this has been talked about on this forum, but was wondering what effect high gas prices and also the great deals available for large suv's last year (really more concerned about chevy suburbans)have had or are having on either trade in values and or retail values. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

East Tennessee ...? .. did you move .....?
I buy a lot of these for Ford employee's (they don't wanna be drivin' a Chevy to work ya know) ....... the color is good for this with one, the miles are just "ok" .. if it's clean, loaded-up, no kisses from Krispy Kream and no seat package, right.? ... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $26's, might maybe be worth the tall $26's on a bright and sunny day, maybe ...... dealers will sell these all day long for the $28/$29ish figure ..
Terry.
I am struggling whether to trade-in or sell my Passat on my own. KBB's price is too low compared to the market price, IMO. This is the car:
2002 Passat GLS, 4cyl, 4DR, silver outside/gray cloth inside, San Francisco,
40k miles, with 3 months/10k warranty left
The only option was Monsoon Audio and Tiptronic. I think.

Any idea of a reasonable private party price vs. trade-in price ?
Thanks in advance

Mornin' Daniel ......
Out in the land of Pebble Beach .. we have an 02 Passat GLS with the 4 banger and 40,000 short miles, we gotta a little auto action, the color is good, we got some tunes, no hydes, no slider and you say it's in pretty good shape -- no such thing as Excellent, unless your drivin' an 05 XJ8 with 4,400 miles ....
No runs no hits no errors...? .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $10's, maybe the low low low $11's if you're lucky and you didn't bet on the Seahawks ...... down Retail Rd.? .. properly done: $12,900 *asking* and cut it loose for $11,5/$12,5 .... the books show more $$ than they are really worth .... what figures were you thinkin.?
Terry.

let me know how it goes .....

Honda dealer doesn't want to budge from $23,000, but then again they thought it was a Q45 until I told them differently.
That is pretty bad though thinking a G35 is a Q45.
2004 X5 3.0i SAV - Price: $39,000
Just curious...have you read the Edmunds X5 owners message forum? My wife really liked the looks of the X5 also, and I was seriously considering getting one, until I started researching them. It would seem like they are quite problematic to own, at least judging by the comments over on the owner's forum.
I still haven't 100% totally ruled one out (hey, we might get lucky and get a good one)...but the Toyota 4-runner or Land Cruiser is looking like a much more reliable vehicle.
Online forums tend to attract those people that are looking to complain about their problems. This is true for everything, not just cars. Take everything you read with a grain of salt...
As to what percentage of the value they offer you I have no idea. We will normaly give dealers that call a little range to work with on the vehicle instead of a hard and fast number. What they do with it after that is their business.

Keep in mind, there's auctions and then there's auctions ..... if you've followed any of the Barrett-Jackson auctions they're about 10/20% *above* retail figures, let alone wholesale .. but when you put a group of folks together, get all the hype goin' on, bring in some camera's and you'll get people to pay crazy $$ sometimes (most times) .. but they sure enjoy using the word "auction" ..l.o.l.. God bless em', ain't my money ...
That said ... even at the big dealer auctions where's there's 4,0/5,000 vehicles that run in 2/3 hours I've seen dealers pay psychotic $$ for just average vehicles .. of course the word ~inexperienced~ comes into play here .l.o.l..... that's why you see people pay crazy figures at foreclosure sales and antique auctions .. that's why you need to know when to "hold em' and when to fold em" ...
... anywaaaay ..... in Titusville, just north of the big Sea Ray plant .. you're lookin' at a 98 Acura Integra with almost 150k, it has a meat clever and we got that purty no-sale green color goin' on ... ... **IF** this is an LS, the paint isn't all burned off, the clutch hasn't sunk into the floormats, the breeze is cold, the rubber is decent, the service is up to date, we don't have that Bonnie and Clyde interior and it hasn't hit every Love Bug between Melbourne and Miami .... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $3's ... if it needs stuff, then start deducting .... if it's "kinda-maybe-almost" a nice one, then it probably will see $5,900ish down Retail Rd ....
Don't forget to let me know .......

Chi-town, right .....? ... it's a CPO, color is good, the options are better, the miles are almost lowish and their *asking* $39,000 ......
If ~~ the history is clean, no curb burners, no paint by numbers and the interior hasn't been used as a dumpster ... then the dealer probably paid in and around the super tall $31ish low/mid $32ish figure for it, maybe .. so figure a little this and a little that, drop the CPO in there and it probably hits the table at in and around the $33ish figure .......... $39,000..? .. the books are a little stiff on these X5's, but this one is the 3.0 and most buyers aren't panting for them, as a matter of fact, what sells the 3.0's is the price difference between that and the 4.4's .... I have a funny feelin' that the dealer will unload this dudette for the $35/$36ish range - and be happy to do it .....
Don't forget the update .....
Terry.
I'm still looking for a replacement for the Legend...I kind of stumbled across the Mazda Protege5 as a possibility. Mathias got me started thinking about the Vibe, and I was reading a review where one guy had a Vibe and a P5, and sold the Vibe and bought another P5. Cool looking little cars, and made in Japan. It may be a bit underpowered, and I'm not sure how the space will be, but was wondering if you see many going through the auctions and what they're doing. They only made them in 2002 and 2003 I believe. Thanks in advance.
Q
$23.? ..l.o.l... welcome to Honda-land ... by the way, when did I post that figure.? .. it doesn't matter, it's still worth "all" of the strong $24ish range, even in the dark ....
Most Honda dealers are kinda funny (nothing personal Isell) ..
Most don't keep the trades and depending on the vehicle, they usually want to be $800/$1,500 back of auction money .. stop and think about it, how many Suburbans, 330Xi's, Infiniti's do you see at the local Honda store ...? ..... "their reasoning is": they would rather blow a new Honda out for $xx,xxx and then make money on the trade ... this way they don't pay a commission to sales and or sales managers depending on their business structure, and also because most Honda stores are still quite small compared to the local Ford store selling 250 new units a month .... if ya follow what I mean ..
Terry. :shades:
Long time, no post. I am thinking of trading in my 2004 Mazda3 sedan for a 2006 Mazda3 hatch in the next month or two. I just got the inspection/emissions done, and it passed, but the dealer said the tires will need to be replaced soon. Do you think it is worth spending $500-600 for new tires, or just trade it in with the worn tires? I am thinking new tires, but I want your expertise. Edit: I am getting new tires installed this Saturday. I will probably start looking to trade in April-May now. I was hoping to get at least 13K for it. Is that unreasonable?
Thanks again!!

Did the engine rattle keep the car from being driveable? I look at an engine rattle as being an annoyance (possibly a flaw). I would categorize a reliability issue as something that keeps the car from being driveable when I need it to be.
Wondering what the trade-in value for my Aurora is *blush*, need a bigger second car to accomadate my kids, heck if any of them were close to driving age I would just keep the car, since I only have about 7 payments left on it.

Car is in good shape, normal wear and tear, although will hit 70,000 miles by the end of the month.

Mornin' Q man ....... these are also pretty nice little drivers .. as far as speed, you need to drive any of these little pocket rockets and see if it fits the bill .. cars are like golf clubs, it all depends on what they accomplish on a individual basis .. Nike is selling TONS of the new Sasquatch Drivers, the funny part is I still haven't met anyone with a swing speed of 115 mph+ (God forbid anyone should try one out) - but they're selling a ton of em' ..l.o.l...
Clean 02's are doing in and around the super tall $8's low/mid $9's and the 03's are seeing the tall $10's .. figure $1,500ish over those figures down Retail Rd ..... ya might consider lookin' at a new Vibe all tricked out, Mathias loves his and they're "about" $2grandish less than the Yota twin .......
Terry. :shades:
Problem with Q is he wants to keep his TL plus he wants a nice efficient little driver plus he wants to spend under $8... that would have been easy a year ago, with a Mazda Pro as the first choice... but now it seems all the fuel savers have gone UP $1,500 since then instead of down.
On top of the prices, the Vibe, while useful and fun to drive, isn't all that smooth.
-Mathias
If you want to go cheaper, and you don't need the wagon, look at the Protege ES sedan.. They also come pretty loaded, and sell for about $1500-$2000 less than the P5..

Good description .... tanks.
Up in the land of the Steelers .... "S" model, right ...? .. we got this little 04 Mazda 3 with the 4 doors and the auto thing ..... it's a good color, the miles are almost ok, we got some new rubber, we got the sport pack, some ABS, a little airbag stuff, we gots da hole in the roof, some minor scratches and fender deal which is no big deal -- unless it was painted purple ....
Remember .... there is no such as "excellent" ... if it's nice and clean, no funny stuff in the ashtray, no KFC floating up to the ceiling and you haven't drug the wheels over every curb between Pittsburg and Philly ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $12's, maybe the low/mid $13's, maybe .....
Don't forget the update .......
Terry.
Mathias - not a problem, more of a situation. :-)
kyfdx - Thanks...I'll look at the sedan. I don't really need a wagon, but the P5 looks pretty cool. :-)
My best estimate is that they are worth somewhere in the $19s, and the residual is somewhere over $21. So, it makes no sense to buy out the lease.
Even when Terry says in practically every post that almost no cars are truly in "excellent" condition, funny how still every car posted here is in excellent condition... Doesn't anyone get it by now?
I was quoted 20,000 real $$ on this car with 21k miles if I trade for new 06--at $500 over invoice.
No accidents/body work and very clean. NO car perfect, but very clean, only blemish is slight scrape (1.5 inch)on rear bumper that most do not notice as touched up by me nicely. Otherwise a perfect car in and out.
Color silver blue Meteor silver, gray interior
Non navi but Acura spoiler and all important OKlahoma Tint!

My trade is a Green/Tan 2004 4-door Ford Explorer XLS 4x4 Auto (no other options) with 35,000 miles in Fayette-Nam, NC. "Good" condition, no accidents, all maintenance.
Everyone cites the amount of SUVs on the used market and the recent employee pricing sales as to why the offers are low. I owe $12,900; is that truly unrealistic to expect for trade-in at this time? If I were to try and sell privately I'd want quite a bit more than that. Thanks for any opinions, guys!
