BTW Bill, is there any particular reason you don't like the TL? I know it's a little bland compared to the IS300, but it's fast and dependable
BlackCoupe: Thanks for the advice -- that's pretty much the way I learned to drive a stick myself. Anyway, she's just flat not interested, but maybe I'll give it one more shot.
Jeez... I dont wanna jinx ya.. but the car does absolutely zero for me. It's quiet, smooth, reliable, has good resale..etc..
To me its' a boring car. The Type S is a boring car that is also very fast. Again, its' a nice car tho, but I cannoth think of a FWD Japanese near-luxury car that I personally would want to drive (ES300, I30, Millenia, TL..etc)To me they are all quite bland and unexciting. Just not my cup of tea.
I prefer European cars myself. I'd much rather drive a BMW or Jag or Mercedes..etc..
But the TL is an excellent product!

What do you say its worth??
How much should I hold out for when the dealer tries to low-ball me (as usual at this Chevy-Olds-Caddy dealership)??
Thanks for your help...
I'd hit the car myself at $8,500 or so. Maybe $9K if it was perfect....
Bill
Bill
You oughta sell it yourself.
I just sold one with 75K on it like yours but Silver for $9K..
I'm thinking $7,950/bo Advertise the svc records.. one owner..etc..
Bill
Also, it'll make whoever is appraising it look at it in a more positive light. Also give it a good clean.
I think you can $4,250/bo it in the AutoTrader and get it tho.
Bill
Sounds like a fair offer.
The VW Will do MUCH better at resale time!
Bill
Appreciate the help.
Rick
Thanks in advance,
Brett.
My acquintance just bought a '00 Chevy Malibu at a dealer(?) auction (the selling party was American Family insurance). The car was supposed to have 12K miles on it, but there was no way to check it since the car key was missing(???). So he has the winning bid @ $7K, the auction ends, he has his car ready to be towed home AND miraculously the car KEY is handed to him. So he gets home, checks the car and... it has 39K miles! Not only that, he notices the radiator is empty. So he adds some coolant, starts driving the car and the car stalls. He checks the radiator again - empty! He checks the oil - looks like chocolate milk!!! Apparently the head gasket is shot!
The question is - does he have any recourse?
He contacted the auction, but they claim they are not responsible. If they are not - than WHO IS???
thanks so much!
thanks so much!
1996 GMC K2500, 6.5L turbo diesel, 80K, extended cab, long bed, tow package, SLE, its pretty loaded up, power windows, mirrors, driver's side seat, locks, am/fm cass/cd, keyless entry, electronic 4WD, 60/40 split bench with a fold down console. It has 2 tone paint.....green and tan, tan cloth interior. Very clean, some minor paint work, but you can't tell at all, good tires and a bed liner. Interior is immaculate, non smoker. It has a nice brush guard and offroad lights on it too. We are the truck's second owner and its always been very well cared for. I am thinking about putting it in the paper for $16,500 and not taking less than $15,500. What do you think?
He may have some recourse if the mileage was misrepresented in writing.
Bill knows a lot more than I do about this stuff.
$1,000? $1,500?
Ugh...
Bill
This assumes you contact your local dent wizard/dent doctor.. they can usually get light dents out for like $50-100. Well worth doing IMHO
Bill
Right now I'd rather see a 98 with 45K miles (Average to highish miles) than a 99with 45K miles (High for a 99 IMO).
And if you can save $2K+ or so... I'd say go for the leftover. Personally, if there's a subvented rate, I would STRONGLY suggest you lease the 01 Suburban/Yukon/Tahoe..etc.. They have been tanking recently in a big way with resale and I doubt it will get better. Might be a safe way to hedge your bets...
Bill
First year? In Canada? TOugh call.
My thoughts are you ought to be able to sell it privately after a year for something like $2K or so back of original MSRP (Most VWs do not sell near invoice) so figure like $2K back of original invoice or so...
But it is just a guess... but I think I'm close here.
Bill
He should have arbitrated the car sale day. If not, he may be stuck.
That being said.. a car fromAmerican Family insurance? What was it? A salvage sale car??
Probably a reason why it sold for $7K for a 2000 Malibu, they're doing way closer to the $10-12K range (Rough guideline).
Auctions are for those who are experienced...its a great way to get hurt if you are not careful.
Bill
IMHO you ought to be able to do a solid $2,500 better than you can do on an 01 leftover for it to be worth your while.
Bill
I'd be a lot more likely to check your local paper, or shop it to a couple dealers and then add like $2,500 or so to that... But as an askign price up there.. might well be doable. High for the lower 48 though.
Bill
There are significant tax advantages to trading in on new purchase here (15% tax only on difference between new and trade in), plus the convenience factor. Of course, dealers take that into account....
Getting dealers appraisal tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.
Brett.
It's obvious that someone went through some trouble to make the key disappear and then suddenly appear after the auction close. But who could it have been???
But, if you go to auction, and the info is incorrect .. the auction takes the vehicle back... Period !
Last month I bought a 98 Chevy Prism LSI for a friend, and the mileage read 25,287 on a "quick view" -- The markings on the window with the -run #'s- were 12-246 ( GMAC lease lane ) and 25K --- This told told me, it was the the 246 vehicle to run in lane 12 and the mileage was "25Kish" .
Well anyway, I bid ( based on the info given at the tower, 25K car etc,. ) -- and I get it - nice car, wheels, slider, new rubber, CD, etc..
When I had the vehicle transported with the 4 other vehicles I bought, I check it out on a saturday (it was purchased on a thursday) --- Well quess what ....? the mileage is not 25,287 --- that's the TRIP odometer mileage, on trip 1 and trip 2 ..NOT.. the odometer mileage.
The paper work all stated 25, 287, the draft purchase read 25, 287 -- but the real mileage was *37,459* --- The vehicle was represented as 25, 287.
1 phone call later, and having the vehicle driven back.. and about 4.5 minutes with abritation -- they where more than happy, to give the vehicle back to GMAC -- it was a mistake, I knew it and they knew it. Quality auctions, don't have the time ( or are they willing .. to gamble their reputation on such stuff )
Was it a inconvenience to me --- of course. Could I have been playing Golf instead -- aaah, Yeh.! But other than that, that's all it really was.
That's OK, a month later I won $250 on their reverse raffle -- Soooo, now we are even ...l....o...l --- I have been through this now 3 times in 18yrs, except for a little problem I had in Texas in 97 -- They stand behind their market ---
Dirty oil, ripped seats, no spares, no books , under carriage damage etc.. that is the fault of the buyer -- you gotta' look..
I hope this helps...
Terry.
I will try to find out...
Also, what would be a good number If I was going to retail it.
It's Champagne, it has 19,021 miles,Leather heated seats, Bose, spoiler, Sunroof and the Chrome alloys. It's been well kept. I change the oil and filter about every 3 or 4,000 miles , it's very clean inside and out. No dings at all except for one about the size of a dime on the drivers side rear door, which cant be seen unless the sun sits perfect on it and that's all.
I'm looking at my neighbors Audi A6 4.2 Quattro, it's a 2000 with 13K. It's silver with the grey interior, it has every option including the chromes and it's clean. The sticker was over 51,000 and he asking 45,900. what's a fair offer?
Thanks again, You do a great service here, it's always fun to look at your opinions, I quess that's why they call it the "real world" here.

If this Catera is "stand tall" and looks showroom -- and the "only" little, bitty, thing that's wrong is a hard to see ding ... this Catera will do in the high $16's, $16,700/$16,900 -- and, if it's a real nice one , it will do $17,000 and some change .. on the right day. Catera's are on the strong side right now, If they are "super clean" and no miles.
If, you are going to retail it -- for a quick sale .. detail it, and run a 4/5 liner -- and for a quick sale, drop it in the paper for let's say - $19,495/$19,895
Sooooo, your neighbor want's to dump his Audi huh... ? Did I read this right ...? He is asking how much ...? -- $45,900 -- ...?
Sometimes, I have to ask -- thank goodness for Lasik surgery ...l....o...l.... Well, that's a great price ------ for him ------
Audi's are great vehicles, and the A6 with the 4.2 is a barn burner .. I love em', but he is a "tinge" on the high side, no matter what any book say's. IF, the Audi is "In the wrapper" Ya know, drive it to a showroom condition -- it will do a strong $36,000 at the auctions ... I'm thinkin' a more than fair offer, would be $39,000ish --- or find a another vehicle --or -- neighbor... l...o...l...
I hope this helps ...
Terry.
Well you know I like these cars, I just picked up a nice 99 in the pearl/tan , nice vehicle ..! 18K all the stuff and super clean.
If the 3.5RL is like I say, "in the wrapper" or pristine -- and this ( miles are a "tinge" on the high side) vehicle needs nothing but a new owner, the dealer was in and around ( with Nav ..? ) a $26/$27ish number at the auctions -- So Quentin, a $28ish number is a good place to start ...
Good Luck,
Terry.
Unless this was a TMU, salvage or rebuilt vehicle .. I think you have passed up a GREAT deal.
What am' I saying "think" ... I know you passed up a great deal ...l...o...l..
Terry.
Thanks,
Quentin
(Make that 3 with that $20K 99 RL.. that was a typo.. right? You meant $30K??)
Insanity 1: Paying $30,000 for a new Camry. What are they thinking?
Insanity 2: Paying $45,900 for an A6 4.2Q. I'm with Terry, that is one bad puppy, but I think that $39-40K is like.. realistic
Bill
My silly point is, you can buy a real nice Rolex for around $8,000 or less when it's used. Perhaps in this case a pre-owned ES300 Lexus would be a better approach -- and of course, the best approach would be the RL.
Based on the all the "secret stuff" coming out of Nissan, the new Altima ( which looks and sounds great ) is going to be just a little shy of the Camry XLE ( $30,000...?) -- Soooooo, wait for the new Altima's to be out for 8/10 months and we will see what the market does --- $30,000 who would have thunk it ..?
Terry.
This is a GREAT thread, would have saved me a lot of trouble back then.
I have started shopping for the next new vehicle and am wondering how my current ride is faring in the real world:
1999 Chevy Blazer LS 4x4 2-door, black/beige cloth
40700 miles, 4-speed auto
power everything except passenger seat
remote keyless entry
CD but no cassette
heavy-duty towing package
alloy wheels
recent tires
A quick look at the numbers, and it all coming back to me from last time, reminded me not even to look at the Edmunds numbers (meaning no disrespect to this site or its moderators).
As to its condition, let us say that the vehicle has seen more than its share of food but no smoke (and I don't think you'll find any mustard stains or lurking French fries), there are maybe two of what I guess are called "parking lot kisses" and maybe two scratches that would show if you looked carefully, and other than that it has been maintained with records and is pretty good for a 4x4 SUV that has been driven somewhat more than its fair share for 2.5 years. I live in the Northland of southern Minnesota, where I'd hope that a 4x4 SUV is considered a good thing. I've sure considered it one.
KBB "good" is giving me in the high $11k area; would I even break $11k on trade?
And finally, are there classes on learning to pick the "right color"? I can't seem to get it right. My last car: white Pontiac Sunfire, wrong color. This car: black Chevy Blazer, wrong color. If I can't get black or white right, I don't think I trust myself to branch out into the primary colors!
Maybe I should just get silver and be done with it.
Thanks for the help! Feel free to call me Jack, by the way. I don't like my screen name and am not completely sure what it means/meant....
Floor mats
Premium stereo: AM/FM/CD/Speakers
Leather
Black top coupe package - special black roof, mirrors, black badging, white-background instruments, unique alloy wheels (supposedly only a few thousand of these made, but it's entirely a cosmetic package, no performance difference)
Bright Red (w/the black roof)
40K miles
Good condition. Ding on the front hood right up front just over the right headlight where some joker with a tall truck must have backed into me.
Some paint missing from back bumper (plastic) -- parallel parking wounds.
1 small stain on front passenger seat.
You guys are awesome for providing this info!! It will make it a lot easier to negotiate with some idea what the car is worth.
My lease buyout is $13K -- but I've already exhausted the miles with 1 year left. (39K/39-mo.)
So I figure I'll take a bit of a bath on the car either now or in a year (after running up mileage at .20/mile).
Any hope? And should I fix the ding, paint, and stain before trying to trade? I could try to sell the car privately, but then I'll have to make up the difference out of my own pocket rather than rolling the negative equity into the new lease.
Suggestions? Thx--x
Quentin
The other time I could've smacked myself was when I passed up on a 96 328i with 60k for $10,000....
